4:00 PM
Yay Turkish high school curriculum is changed
No more evolution

why is that good?

Is that just your HS?

just wondering

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ because everything Erdogan does is great! Who are you to question that?!
5

lol
is that seriously what life is like for you?
:/

4:02 PM
@betseg as long as he doesn't ban codegolf...

Poeee’s laaaawww

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I hope it won't turn into this

*shakes fist*

Q: Total eclipse of the byte

Ege BayrakThis is my first attempt at code golfing. I wanted to make it as fun as I can. I hope you'll have fun while tinkering with this. As the title suggests, task is to print out lyrics of Total Eclipse of the Heart by using loops and changing the word heart with byte. Please no external linking ent...

4:05 PM
@betseg if you feel bad, the US almost did this once too

@NewMainPosts Lol the poster of this question is Turkish

@Lynn brief nethack advice: I think my pet picked up 2 blessed luckstones and is still carrying them around, 50+ turns later

imgur.com/gallery/yhWCOvs Well, that was unexpected. :P
5

would it do that?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ What pet?

4:12 PM
it doesn't "like magic", though it does like gold and gems
@quartata basically baby dragon but weaker
dnethack baby pseudodragon

Can it use weapons and armor

no
no hands either

But it's an intelligent monster?

yeah
intelligent, likes gold, likes gems
and there were 2 blessed luckstones I got it to pick up, but it never dropped them

I think you're in trouble then. I'm trying to remember if more expensive gems will get them to drop it

4:20 PM
hm okay

Can you polymorph?

I'm certain they are luckstones fwiw this was in a shop
@quartata nope, no nymph stealing yet
I have an un-id'ed ring though so maybe I can later
for now I guess my pet will just hold on to them

Wait let me look in the source

@quartata I think his inventory is full also, he grabbed a bunch of other gems >.< and now he won't pick anything up

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ What role are you?

4:28 PM
monk
half-dragon in dNethack

I'm waiting for the day a Nethack fork has templates
I want my vampiric half-dragon half-troll lycanthropic fiendish monk

o_O
@quartata dead anyway, fuck ants

!gt ant

??

4:34 PM
it was a fire ant fwiw
@Pavel that counts as noise btw, I don't take offense but some people might

I shouldn't have to explain what that was to @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ. I'm rather disappointed in you

I was simply stating that I too do not understand quartata.
Is this a thing I need a Linux for?

I thought you've been in #nethack

Q: Time taken to print numbers

Horváth DávidSummary Write a program or function, which doesn't take any input, and outputs all the integer numbers, between -1000 and 1000 in ascending order, to the stdout, one per line, like this: -1000 -999 -998 -997 ... And after that you need to print the time taken to print these numbers in millise...

dnethack shops are way better than nethack shops
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ How are you playing dnethack? I'm doing ssh to the ascension.run

4:52 PM
I stopped now
@quartata giant ant?
oh
go team ant
@KritixiLithos I also have a local copy which took a lot of work to set up
I normally play on that
I'll start a new one later
@quartata I got the go team ant mostly, it was the ! at the beginning that confused me

5:10 PM
What is beastmastery in dnethack? I seem to have enhanced that skill

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ rodney command

5:30 PM
ah okay

This pair of comments was unexpectedly amusing:
How can "the terminal velocity of a skydiver" be $56\,\rm m/s^2$? That's an acceleration, not a velocity. And $75\,\rm m/s^3$ is even stranger. — Henning Makholm 7 hours ago
@HenningMakholm urgh, I see why you are confused. those are the footnotes, I will edit that to be clearer — Polygnome 7 hours ago
First time I've ever seen a footnote number that looks like part of a math equation.

@KritixiLithos in dnethack there are special pet restrictions, like you can only have a maximum of like lvl/15 + 1 pets or something, iirc some classes can a beast mastery skill which gives bonuses to that and other pet-related things

Aah, thanks
I've been enjoying dnethack a lot especially since my pet can breath fire!

yeah
yuo can also get less nice ones (but still very useful) like sleep, acid
frost/lightning is nice tho

5:50 PM
The element is random?

@ConorO'Brien do you know if there's a shorter way to do this:
FileHandler.prototype.handle = function() {
    return File.handle(this);
}
It should really be = File.handle but that this arg...

I don't think there's a way to make that shorter.

Hapy News: SpaceX just did first booster landing in pacific!!!

6:05 PM
@Downgoat Woot! Does that mean the rocket went more than halfway around the world?

I believe so

6:21 PM
@Downgoat Why does the video start flickering/stopping in the final seconds of the landing EVERY TIME?

Anonymous
@flawr Aliens

@flawr Rocket farts are strong, yo.

@flawr Haxors

I bet SpaceX never actually landed on the moon.
They just want us to believe it.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was a hoax because ^

@LuisMendo I'd like to add MATL to Try it online!, but there are a few things that aren't clear to me. Would you mind answering a couple of questions?
@Dennis ^ One year! :-) Thank you very much, again. It meant a lot to have MATL on TIO.

Q: Is using the internet for your answer valid?

u8y7541If I write out the answer to a problem and put it on GitHub, then I can easily win a challenge by simply writing code to fetch the answer. Is this valid? I've never seen it been forbidden in a challenge's rules.

Anonymous
TIO is an amazing service that has become essential for this site
16

Definitely.

Anonymous
It lets people easily test answers, and it makes language authors not have to admit how bad they are at web dev/design by making their own web interpreters

Anonymous
I can't imagine golfing without TIO now

Anonymous
7:03 PM
I'm eager to see what other plans Dennis has for TIO

TIO: The interpreter that replaced almost all other golf interpreters. I don't use it for real life though.

I think TIO is still lacking some essential feature.

I use it for "real life" sometimes since it has useful languages too

i.e. an auto golfing function

Syntax highlighting

7:05 PM
@KritixiLithos vihan.org/p/tio fixed /selfadvertising

Anonymous
@flawr It already has Dennis

@flawr We call it the "Auto-dennis"
7

Syntax highlighting actually seems like a hard problem, surprisingly. It's like timezones - you're better off using someone else's work.

@Downgoat Also, WTH does that default to vim-mode when it's so broken? Y doesn't even work correctly

@El'endiaStarman Yeah, always the Americans with their crazy imperial timezones...

7:06 PM
@DJMcMayhem no it's because you clicked vim mode so it saves that,

Oh, OK. Still, it's painful

and D: what is so broken

0 ex commands work. Y doesn't work, IIRC macros don't work.

okay Y works for me, I'll have to see about ex mode
do you know of a browser-based vim mode plugin that supports those?
wait are macros recordings or different

@Downgoat There really isn't syntax highlighting, just a fancy editor (not that I'm saying that the editor is bad, it looks nice)

7:09 PM
Yeah, recordings.

@KritixiLithos No I mean select language with syntax highlighting (e.g. Python or Brainfuck)

@Downgoat Also, are you sure? It seems like it's doing y$ not yy

@Downgoat I see...

@KritixiLithos If other languages authors have syntax highlighting file for their language I can add it

> Tips for hackers
Typically how does a syntax highlighting file look like?

7:11 PM
@DJMcMayhem I see, lemme try to implement

@Downgoat Conor wrote this one for brain-flak
Although it's a little bit too bright I think

@KritixiLithos easiest way is if it's a CodeMirror file but I can probably convert from other formats if it isn't too complex
@DJMcMayhem lemme try my hand at that, Brain Flak should be trivial to highlight

Could you make it highlight unmatched brackets?

@Downgoat 3 days later... Why the heck is this so hard?!?

@DJMcMayhem brackets are () [] {} and <> right?

7:16 PM
Yup

@DJMcMayhem should all unmatched brackets be highlighted or only the one user has cursor over?

All

ok

@El'endiaStarman I posted an SO question on syntax highlighting with the ace editor. I only received and answer after 8 days and a 50 rep bounty
@Downgoat I made one such file for pbrain based off BF. I don't know if this works, but it should highlight (): as additional syntax characters. pastebin.com/zJ4BR4nh

7:38 PM
@KritixiLithos okay I added it

Looking good :)

@DJMcMayhem okay added the things :D

Debug feature like on TIO

oh shoot duh
@DJMcMayhem would Y count as a motion?

@Downgoat Also the } vim command is not working properly. It goes to the beginning of line at the end of the paragraph, but it should go the the end of the line at the end of the para instead.

7:49 PM
D:
yeah I will have to switch to vim.js

btw the syntax highlighting in brainflak is encouraging me to learn brainflak :D

:D
@DJMcMayhem okay I think I got it, lemme know if there's problem in highlighting

@KritixiLithos \o/
Feel free to bug me with questions
@Downgoat no, operator

okay, thanks

Actually, I'm not sure if that is an operator

8:01 PM
I don't get what the "active stack" is

y is, but Y is a synonym for y_ which is an operator + motion

vim.js is looking to be really cool but pretty giant (since it's compiling actual vim to browser using emscripten) and not compliant with current syntax files, so I have to just fix current vim mode
@DJMcMayhem wouldn't it be y$?
oh great y_ is messed up too

@KritixiLithos the active stack is just the stack you're currently on.

@DJMcMayhem this may sound stupid but is there way to "join" motion e.g. y<something>$l to mimick _

Uhm sort of. The difference between $ and _ is not what they select, it's that _ is a line wise while $ is a character wise
Can you do yV$?

8:06 PM
uh lemme try
Okay I'm now 99% this vim keymap is trolling me

How about Vy?

that would copy entire line though, no?
maybe v$y

Yeah, that's the point. :P

I thought Y was only supposed to do from cursor to end of line?

Vy == Y == yy == y_ == yV$ == yVw == yVl...

8:08 PM
btw here's a list of ex commands supported atm
colorscheme map imap nmap vmap unmap write undo redo set set setlocal setglobal sort substitute nohlsearch yank delmarks registers global

Are those new? Substitute definitely wasn't working earlier

oh oops I did a stupid

@Downgoat just for completeness, _ is actually ^ in normal mode and V^ in O mode (operator pending mode, eg where you get after pressing d or y or c)

oh
so what is broken atm now?

Except that it takes a count, which is why 3Y (actually 3y_) works
Y is mapped to y$
Although a lot of people like that TBH

8:15 PM
perhaps I could have option to add your own vimrc or something so you can map your own stuffs

I gtg. Cya later!

Bye! .o/

8:42 PM
Should meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/10166/32686 really be a standard loophole?
It invalidates all ppcg.lol answers

It was created after (and because of) those answers.
Standard loopholes do not apply retroactively

I'm not entirely sure what's wrong with it

Whoever has the most money for a custom domain wins.

Damnit, google.

@quartata this said, everyone else can use that domain

8:57 PM
True. Still a boring golf.
Although in theory it could be set up to, say, only accept requests from User-Agent: 05AB1E

that is true

Not only boring, but once one of the answers uses a shorter domain, all of them do.
Plus, it disallows compressing https://api.stackexchange.com/<very-long-query> to goo.gl/12345.
@quartata brb registering .cg.

$120,000 could definitely get you .c
Or whatever the fee is

Sounds reasonable. Anybody wanna pitch in?

Sure, I'll pitch in my life savings. Definitely a worthy cause.

9:06 PM
I don't know about you guys, but I'm not sure how much of a dent my life savings would make :P

Hm, if we sell <single-letter>.c for 5000 USD, we could actually make money.
Speaking of reasonable prices, code.golf appears to be for sale for 7500 USD.
@LuisMendo Ah, fond memories. :)

@quartata I believe it's 250,000 USD

Rats, now we need to charge 10,000 USD per domain.

@DJMcMayhem I've already sept all life savings on goats so I don't have to worry about losing life savings, you should too :P

Well, w.xyz goes for 65,000 USD, so c.c should still be worth a lot more.

9:12 PM
> The Evaluation Fee is designed to make the new gTLD program self-funding only. This was a recommendation of the Generic names Supporting Organization (GNSO). A detailed costing methodology – including historical program development costs, and predictable and uncertain costs associated with processing new gTLD applications through to delegation in the root zone – estimates a per applicant fee of $US185,000. This is the estimated cost per evaluation in the first application round.

And if we get every .<letter>...

> The total fee per applicant takes into account close to $US13 million
wait then how does google purchase like 80 differnt gTLDs

@Downgoat You joke but I have lots of friends who actually own goats IRL

@DJMcMayhem I like your friends. Your friends are smart. We should all be like your friends

@Dennis Back of the envelope math says $40 million profit if we can sell every letter.letter
This is good idea

9:15 PM
For example, this is one of them:

user image

why has no one done this a $4 million investment isn't that bad

@quartata :O that adds up to 2.7 MILLION goats

@quartata That's a number I can live with. What are we waiting for?

@Downgoat Conquer the world with goat army?

Nov 11 '16 at 17:43, by Downgoat
totally not related my quest to make world ruled by goats

9:17 PM
@Dennis brb calling shark tank

@quartata Ensue many billions of trademark and competitive lawsuits.

ICANN -> ICAN ->TICAN -> TINCAN. ICANN is Tin Can confirmed

What a shame, tincan.com isn't a thing.

@mınxomaτ I thought ICANN wasn't like based in specific country
> not-for-profit

Yeah just like the NFL

9:20 PM
> sells multi-million dollar products

My comment isn't related to ICANN at all.
If I can get an order past a stupid willing judge, ICANN will happily comply with US takedown/takeover requests.

That's why we have to sell them quick so that they aren't our problem anymore

@quartata You need a registrar infrastructure. If you don't want to pay to do that yourself, you are liable as a customer of your registrar of choice.
And then there's tax and everything goes downhill from there.

That's why we run our DNS in the Cayman Islands

9:35 PM
@quartata You know a lot about source-engine, right?
Would you know anything about this?

I'm really excited for this year

Same here

Although there aren't a lot of nominations. I'm gonna go add a bunch

@DJMcMayhem Writing an answer right now

Oh, cool

I just made an MP3 / JavaScript polyglot. You can listen to the song, or you can include the file as JS with <script charset="ISO-8859-1" src="thefile.mp3"></script> and it will navigate to the song's URL.
It doesn't work in Google Chrome, though.
Not unless you rename the file extension to .js

@DJMcMayhem There you go. Do you need voice chat disabled too?
Haha, while looking up whether that needed cheats I found this convar:
hud_takesshots : 0 : , "a", "cl" : Auto-save a scoreboard screenshot at the end of a map.
Never knew about that one until today, that's convenient

@quartata Yeah, that wouldn't hurt. Thanks!

@DJMcMayhem That's voice_enable 0, but I think you can actually turn that off in Settings too rather than using the console.
Do you know how to make these run every time it starts?

11:28 PM
Oh, Ok cool.

(i.e autoexec.cfg)

No, I was actually just about to ask that haha

Go to steamapps/common/GarrysMod
Under garrysmod/cfg make a new file called autoexec.cfg
And put your commands in there
That applies to all Source games -- <mod folder>/cfg
