@samcarter Thank you for the bounty!

8:26 AM
@barbarabeeton Works fine, i just tested. I would also add an period after \thesection if you want to write an answer. On the other hand, that code example is a real mess. Using a starred section to get the title? Taling about chapters, when the class does not provide chapters? Really messy.

8:46 AM
Moar bounty!

@PauloCereda I'll start another one soon!

@CarLaTeX too late. :)

@PauloCereda Why?

@CarLaTeX are we talking about the duck question? I just added one bounty. :)
It's one bounty at a time. :)

@PauloCereda Oooooh I haven't seen that, thank you!

8:52 AM
@CarLaTeX <3
@CarLaTeX Ducks are very good with bounties.

@PauloCereda Let's hope someone will post an answer as good as ducks!

@CarLaTeX :)

@cfr I don't have mail:-)

@DavidCarlisle speaking of mail, looks like my thesis is doomed. :)

@PauloCereda no surprises there then.

@DavidCarlisle you are mean

@PauloCereda I think you may have mentioned that before.

@DavidCarlisle :)

11:37 AM
@CarLaTeX I have to thank you for two hats :)

12:07 PM
@samcarter You're welcome :):):)

Hello, I have a question about the editor on this site. Where do I ask that kind of stuff? META?

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Meta is about TeX-sx itself or 'community' issues, anything else either goes on the main site

@JosephWright Ok - may I show you a screenshot here? Maybe it's something stupid.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Of course

When I have a list right before of code then the code is not regogniced anymore.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Ah, the editor in the webpage: meta is the right place :)

1:35 PM
@JosephWright Just happened here: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/347699

@Dr.ManuelKuehner You need eight spaces to indent code which is inside a list body
16
Q: Why do code snippets not work after lists?

xportI want to insert a code snippet after a list but the code snippet is not a part of the list item. This is the first item. This is the second item \documentclass{article} \begin{document} \end{document} Should I always insert a rule to make it work? This is the first item. This is the secon...

@JosephWright It's not indie - at least I added several newlines between

@JosephWright because wiki markup is so much easier to understand than html or tex markup

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle It has it's place but there are limitations, as we know

@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright I see. Thanks.
@JosephWright Why did you remove the MWE part?

1:38 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner It's not part of the answer: it's a comment on the question

@JosephWright Ok - shoudl I add it as a comment?

@JosephWright after we add 1000 lines of tex and lua to make A acute work reliably we just need to handle shaping in arabic and indic scripts...

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Up to you: probably not a bad idea
@DavidCarlisle :)

@JosephWright Done.

@JosephWright or we could get luatex to use harfbuzz

1:40 PM
@DavidCarlisle As we both know, this is the best long-term plan

@JosephWright perhaps I'll reply to my own mail and mention that though

Looking at some unanswered questions. @egreg What to do about this one? I don't even (try tp) understand the question. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/151577/…

2:01 PM
@JosephWright What to do with tex.stackexchange.com/questions/224171/…? Do we have a suitable duplicate? The questions is clear and can be answered, but i kinda don't want to. TeX.SX is not a template writing service.

@Johannes_B Definitely unclear

@egreg Voted as well.

2 hours later…
3:55 PM
@StefanKottwitz I just bought the two books that are on sale. Thanks for the hint.

4:12 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner Great, I hope you like it!

Hi folks, can anybody tell me the rules of this game? For example: inhttp://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/347721/compiling-multiple-latex-files I've edited some typos, layout etc. which was peer reviewed and accepted. There are several comments on how to solve the questions. I'd thought, that this question has been asked a hundred times before and hence this question should be set on hold Among the comments are some people, who I suspect to be able, to put articles in hold.
But why making comments and not answering those questions, if it is not a duplicate ...?

@Jan Duplicate rather....

Jan
@ChristianHupfer Christian, what is happening to those duplicates either?

@Jan There have been discussions. Marking a question as duplicate needs some looking for a good fit. Writing a quick answer is often less time consuming.

@Jan They go to Mordor and will be dropped in the lava lake of Mount of Doom ;-) No, that's another story :D

@Jan They stay, so they can be found via google, leading to the original uestion/answer.

Jan
5:14 PM
@ChristianHupfer Looking on my feet, I doubt that I ever will be allowed to put doubles in the lava.
@Johannes_B So it is quite useful/makes sense, to edit them to good question quality standards?!

@Jan What is a good question? ;-)

@Jan Editing closed questions? In 99 % useless or not necessary, they will only bump up and start the Reopen Queue

Jan
@Johannes_B At least, the questions are in correct grammar, without typos, etc.
@ChristianHupfer How can I determine, if a question is already closed?

@Johannes_B @egreg and @DavidCarlisle posted good only questions ;-)

Jan
On that particular, I didn't notice any hints.

5:18 PM
@ChristianHupfer Yes, perfect examples of how to write a question; mine are better than @DavidCarlisle's, though.

@Jan: Look here

Q: How to parametrize tex processing using command line?

amnUnfortunately, I cannot write a better title for the question. I am trying to parametrize my workflow, where I will allow myself to override page margins from the command line with the following: xelatex "\newcommand{\mygeometry}{margin=2cm}\input{myfile.tex}" Where in myfile.tex I have the d...

@Jan: There's a yellow colour box indicating that it's closed

@egreg I don't agree. All your questions have been flagged for moderator attention.

Jan
@egreg Of course, we all know, you are the answering good, no one can never ever reach you :-D

@egreg Sure...

@DavidCarlisle Yours got a deluge of downvotes. Can you show one that didn't get at least 10?

5:21 PM
@Jan You can't change the world by fiing typos, and you can't make this network any better by fixing them. Some sure. But the big picture ... no.

@egreg I did wonder if you were spreading out and being rude to more people:-)

A typo doesn't spoil a good question, but fixing a typo doesn't make a bad question good.

Jan
@Johannes_B I am still new to TeX.SE and still have dope^hhope and faith.
@ChristianHupfer So in the case I linked: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/347721/… there is no such marker and therefore it isn't closed.

@Jan Yes, exactly.

@Jan You will notice the same question (not content) being asked over and over again. And it will be answered here. If we would be strict, it would be: Read the documentation and bear in mind that TeX is a macro language. Being strict ... Almost every question on physics.SE could be answered by: Because that are the laws of physics.

Jan
5:25 PM
@Johannes_B I am with you. Nevertheless, fixing typos and such could enhance questions and make them worth reading ... don't it??

You can use closed:yes in the Search input field ...

@Jan Certainty if the result is a question that is sensible to answer

Q: How To Tell When Broccoli is Bad?

ebrtsI often get big jumbo bags of pre cut Broccoli from Costco with a sell by date that is usually about a week out from my date of purchase. The florets seem perfectly fine on the sell by date, and I've cooked and eaten them as much as a week later. What signs should I look for suggesting that i...

@Jan Have you ever purchased an ipohne on ebay? Me neither. But sometimes typos have a purpose. :-p

It's holding a knife?

Jan
@JosephWright if the duplicates would disappear from sight, it would be an useless effort. As long, as the are still visible, I think it is a bit worth, to have them at a high quality level, despite the fact, that they are already answered. :-)
@Johannes_B I don't own a smartphone. But what did you want to point out?

5:29 PM
@Jan Finding (and agreeing on) dupes is hard, certainly

@Jan Some people have a typo in their ebay thing and try to sell an ipohne instead of iphone. That ipohne won't be seen by many, so the money they get is ... not what they expected.
@Jan of course the chance of somebody entering the same typo on google that is here on TeX.SX is very very low.

Jan
@JosephWright I was just curious in that case. I am sure, it is a duplicate (at least a very good candidate). I'd expected, that in the comments, hints would be given, that it is a duplicate and where to find the answers. Instead, it was not edited, but a lot of comments were given, answering the most of the questions. If the question is worth answering, why doing it in a comment, why not as an answer? On which basis do you decide, when to comment, when to answer and when to close as duplicate?
@Johannes_B In their case its bad luck. They would be happy, if someone would have corrected their typo for them.

Q: Why do some people answer in comments?

ripper234Why do some people post comments that are actually answers to the question? Wouldn't posting an answer be better?

@Jan An example from today concerning duping and answering tex.stackexchange.com/questions/343570/…
@StefanKottwitz Just another spam post on LC :-/

Jan
@Johannes_B Jepp. I noticed and began to smile and wonder instantly.

5:49 PM
@Jan By the way. There is also goLaTeX.de and TeXwelt.de as well as latex-community.org if you want to help out. Also, the LaTeX wikibook needs some improvements. ;-)

6:31 PM
@Johannes_B Has somebody attacked the ToC stuff in wikibook in the meantime?

@ChristianHupfer I guess not. Go berserk :-)

@Johannes_B Couldn't be worse than it is now, I suppose. The berserking force is strong in me ;-)

1 hour later…
7:36 PM
@DavidCarlisle Lots of scope issues in beamer
@DavidCarlisle If only someone had come up with a way to tell from the name of variables what their scope was ...

1 hour later…
8:38 PM
@JosephWright you are going to end up re-writing the whole thing:-)

@DavidCarlisle Probably
@DavidCarlisle There are various weird bugs that need me to understand what is going on :)
@DavidCarlisle Based on my CTAN uploads, I'm likely to end up re-writing all of LaTeX anyway so ...
@DavidCarlisle Till can join Frank in thinking 'was it a good idea letting Joseph get involved here' :)

@JosephWright start by re-writing luaotfload to use harfbuzz

Then again, we've also got Bruno ...
@DavidCarlisle That needs C experience

@JosephWright I wonder who has that on the team....

@DavidCarlisle As I've said before, the thing with C experience is money could solve the issue, in sharp contrast to TeX experience

8:41 PM
@JosephWright I had a look but I don't think the hard bits are building the C library, more working out what luatex is up to and where it needs to be added (xetex experience would probably be most useful)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, true
@DavidCarlisle So we are back with 'convince JK or Hans this is a good idea'

@JosephWright something like that

@DavidCarlisle Hmm

@yo' Are you around?

11:30 PM
@egreg just a little bit, why?

11:57 PM
@yo' I'd like you tell me about math.stackexchange.com/questions/2088477/…
