11:00 PM
@Zacharee1 and do you know what LG is offering 5X users that bootloop? G4s!

lol

thankfully it's not too hard to arm twist them into giving you a G5.. if you're lucky. But if you're on Fi you're screwed.

I don't think it's that unusual in phones though
The Note 4 had a problem with some devices where the storage chip would fail and pretty much give you a hard brick

but what if i want the (infinitely better) OP3?

@Zacharee1 yeah, the 6P thing is probably unrelated.

11:01 PM
The 6P is a Huawei
I personally think it's like the Note 7 situation
there was a problem, but it was blown pretty far out of proportion

@KazWolfe You made the mistake of buying LG. Now they will either give you a refurbed 5X or G4, or, if you're lucky, G5.

iPhone 7s have been blowing up, a 5S exploded in someone's pocket, barely any coverage

The note7 is unfair. If iPhones were to suddenly explode, nobody would care. "Oh, batteries just do this, get a new one"
@Seth iPhone 6s here. Hate it.

@KazWolfe exactly

@KazWolfe yes I know but you spoke as if you were in our conversation or I misundetood you.
@Zacharee1 the 6P or the LG issues?

11:03 PM
@Seth Note 7

ohhh, ok.

I'm trying to say that LG does have a problem with bootloops, but it's being blown out of proportion because it's three devices with the same internals

I dunno, there were a lot of explosions.

Hey @TheXed Merry Christmas... wife finally let you sign on eh?

@Seth I think 5

11:04 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I was on earlier before lunch :-P
And Merry Christmas to you too

Oh missed you.... was probably getting turkey ready... and thanks :)

@Zacharee1 Happy now? --^

nope.

@AndroidDev we reached it already. check meta

11:05 PM
@AndroidDev you better start nominating Q & A for closing so we have something to do in 1 hour!

@Seth Google "iphone explosions" and you'll see a few different 7s (actually different ones), a 6S, 5S, maybe a 4
but Apple didn't do a recall

@Zacharee1 I disagree. If LG would recall the devices and fix the problem then it wouldn't be a big deal. But LG is/has done everything they can to sweep it under the rug and refuse to help you.

Personally, I find it absolutely purposeless to have a queue of 0, but for the lolz, sure . . . .

@Seth But you're complaining about the bootloop itself, not how it's handled

@Zacharee1 yeah, a couple random results. It was happening to the note 7 far more times.

11:06 PM
So what did everyone get for Christmas?

@Zacharee1 um, no? Stuff happens. I get it. If they would take care of it I wouldn't care at all.

@TheXed I got a Best Buy cho-cho train humidifer...whisper quiet!

@TheXed nothing . . . well, sort of . . . I got new pillow case and blanket

@Zacharee1 Are you saying to check the meta reviews?

11:07 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix lol nice.

@Zacharee1 well of course there would be hoaxes. So?
Do you really think Samsung would do a recall of that size without warrant?

@Serg pillow cases and blankets are always nice in Colorado...

What did you get Xed?

I got a coffee mug and a pair of PJ's

@Seth I don't think that many actually exploded. I don't remember even seeing 26 reports

11:08 PM
Did the coffee mug say "World's Best Dad" or "I Love Linux"?

why are there no suggested edits?

I swear my eyes are broken today.

No just some reindeer and Santa

@KazWolfe I made 5 edits today but they just take effect immediately.

(unnecessary ping)

11:09 PM
@AndroidDev It says "$%^&*( Windows, I'm using Ubuntu"
#Kaz sorry forgot your loathing of the at sign.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I was at Micro Center the other day, and I saw a shirt that said, "Fix your own ******* computer"

@AndroidDev we can curse here.

@Seth AndroidAuth says at least 35 reported incidents androidauthority.com/samsung-galaxy-note-7-recall-714419. If 26 are a hoax, that's 9 total. That's not really very many. I know there is a problem with this phone, but the explosions in iPhones aren't exactly isolated

The shirt should say: "If you need help fixing your computer you shouldn't have one"

@KazWolfe I typed it exactly as it was written on the shirt.

11:12 PM
@KazWolfe we can?

@TheXed we can, in moderation.

I once saw a shirt saying "No, i won't fix your computer. Use Linux"

@Serg I have a mug that says that, minus the use linux part.

We should now write a disclaimer that most of the questions in AU aren't about "fixing" but rather about "refining"
Like my question yesterday was about shaving 9 seconds off of boot time.

Alertnativley, @KazWolfe could do a PSA

11:15 PM
#KazWolfe hates the @ (at) sign

alert-natively ?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I hate the @ sign
@WinEunuuchs2Unix when it's
@WinEunuuchs2Unix used for
@WinEunuuchs2Unix unnecessary
@WinEunuuchs2Unix pings

@KazWolfe like this ?

Oh I see now... you can dish out the @ but you can't take them #KazWolfe :D

@Serg yes.

11:18 PM
@KazWolfe OK, got it.

You know I'm the only person in this room who's @ makes the sub-woofer shake the living room.
The A/V system doesn't say a nice level "ping" it does a sub-woofer "THUNK"
George Michael just died... "WHAM!"

Q: Is it safe to use a Samsung 850 Pro SSD?

Android DevI just got a brand new Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and I would like to install Ubuntu 14.04 onto it. I have heard some pretty ugly stories of data loss with the 850 series SSDs when using Linux due to bugs in the kernel, as well as bugs in the TRIM operation. I have done my research, but most of what ...

@Seth oh btw, Sprint phones will work fine on Fi

@Zacharee1 Only if they support GSM bands.

because for some reason, Sprint phones tend to support pretty much every US band

@Zacharee1 add Wi to that Fi and it'll be even better

Sprint V20 is fully compatible with T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T

11:33 PM
#sergjokes

@Serg Fi does use WiFi
but also Sprint and T-Mobile

@Zacharee1 Meaning the only challenge remaining is to get Sprint to unlock it for you?

@AndroidDev ding

@AndroidDev I think they're pre-unlocked

(or if they use the same radio chip in non-Sprint versions, you might be able to unlock the bands yourself)

11:34 PM
but idk
@KazWolfe bands are already unlocked
he meant carrier unlock

@Zacharee1 legally, yeah. if you have no EIP on the device, they need to unlock it.
@Zacharee1 the T-Mo V20 has sprint bands usable?

@KazWolfe Verizon's LTE phones are all factory unlocked
@KazWolfe flip it

@Zacharee1 no, i was talking about a non-Sprint branded phone having the Sprint bands enabled.

@Zacharee1 Really?

@Zacharee1 er... no... Phones are locked unless you unlock them (or you buy them carrier unlocked). You can unlock them if you have no balance on the device itself.

11:35 PM
@KazWolfe I was saying the Sprint V20 has all US bands, so I thought you were continuing with that

@Zacharee1 But Fi only supports Nexii or Pixel.

@Seth someone's using a V20 on it

@KazWolfe Although you can buy factory-unlocked phones.

@Seth Technically, anything with the right bands will get you the thing.

well I'm sure it's possible. They just need a SIM.
@KazWolfe xkcd technically

11:36 PM
@Seth But the network switching might not work as expected.

Correct. If you buy a phone from the carrier, it will typically be locked until you request unlock.

@AndroidDev which is kind of important.

Every phone I got from T-Mo was like this.

@KazWolfe not Verizon
> We do not lock most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpay service, either during or after the term of your service contract or Edge installment sales agreement.
We do not lock our 4G LTE devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier.

@Zacharee1 They don't lock phones you owe money on?

11:37 PM
@KazWolfe nope

user136984
Well, goodnight folks! :)

That is very un-Verizon.

gn panda

@KazWolfe if you leave Verizon, you can actually continue to pay off the device normally

That is still very much unlike Verizon.

11:38 PM
@KazWolfe I'm pretty sure you still have to call them to get it unlocked...

I thought it was weird too
TMO does lock its phones, but you only need one activated for 6 months before you can unlock it, so it's not bad

Google Fi works on any phone with LTE Bands 2, 4, 12, 25, 26, and 41.

Yep

All Google-certified/branded phones have this.

TMO are first three, Sprint are latter

11:39 PM
@KazWolfe Just because it connects doesn't mean the network switching will work.

Sprint V20 has 1.2.3.4.5.7.12.13.17.20.25.26.41

@Zacharee1 I unlocked mine instantly, but I paid it of right then.
@AndroidDev It does if you have those bands.

@KazWolfe well paying it off kind of just bypasses the normal agreement ;P

@KazWolfe Source? I don't think Google would make it so easy to get Fi on a non-Nexus phone...

11:42 PM
@AndroidDev As long as it registers with the special SIM, I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's not really as if you're actually switching between the two carriers. I'm pretty sure your phone just sees you're on Fi, and it's all backend
all the towers on Sprint and TMO are probably also registered as Fi towers

that would be the smart way

Google is pretty smart

@Zacharee1 Counterexample: Google Plus

I know on Tracfone though the towers can't tell you're not Verizon. So before I switched to AT&T towers I could get Verizon only features like NFL coverage because when the app performed a network check it couldn't tell I wasn't actually a Verizon subscriber.
@KazWolfe Google Plus is way better than FB.

@KazWolfe it's a good product that no one wants to use

11:43 PM
@Zacharee1 Poor marketing.

@Seth lol
@KazWolfe That's Google's (and LG's) weakness
great product, bad advertising

The t-mobile V20 does not support Sprint bands.
And cannot be used on fi.

although I've been seeing a lot of Pixel ads, if only for the Verizon version
@KazWolfe but the Sprint one can, which is what I said
the TMO one will semi-work on Fi

@Zacharee1 You don't have the sprint version.
@Zacharee1 no, it won't.

@KazWolfe I wasn't talking about myself
@KazWolfe someone was using it on Fi and it worked for the most part

11:45 PM
You can't register phones on the Fi without all the channels.

just kept dropping out

@Zacharee1 The sprint or t-mo version

@KazWolfe I registered my Verizon Note 4 on T-Mobile and it worked fine on 2G only
@KazWolfe They were using the TMO version and were just having some problems with texts over LTE

@Zacharee1 Verizon phones have all the t-mo channels.

@KazWolfe not 12
and missing one UMTS
Note 4 is also 2 years old

11:46 PM
meh.
channel 12 is pretty standard.

Yeah but VZ uses 13

i'd be shocked to see a modern LTE phone without it.

which is 700MHz, but a different block range
12 and 17 are the same thing, but not 12 and 13
My 910V supports 2, 4 and 13. TMO needs 2, 4 and 12. It's also missing at least one UMTS band, but I forget which.
it registered fine
I don't think Fi can/does refuse to register a device if it doesn't support all bands

It can, but not necessarily will.
I haven't tried it because I don't have a Fi SIM, or a Fi-compatible phone to use for activation.

If it's possible for a T-Mobile V20 to register, I think it's possible for it to register ;p

11:50 PM
True because true.

and since Sprint supports every necessary band...
if (true == true) return true;

My Six Sense Says there are Six CV's Sitting in Queue which reopens in Six minutes :D
