3:00 AM
Don't ever threaten.

That was the balloon knot comment, wasn't it?

The wording wasn't meant as a threat, but a warning.

warning/threats/same thing.

Bob
@MichaelFrank For some reason I associate "sir" with InE :\

So, how to build mod soft skills?

3:01 AM
If I'm telling someone off, I'll tell them what, and why.
they're soft skills.

@Bob InE?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Indian English. I dunno if there's a proper abbrev. for it
AmE, BrE, AuE, CaE...

I have no clue how to build them. I donno, go babysit a room of kindergardeners for a week.

@Bob en_IN

indlish.

Bob
3:01 AM
@bwDraco That's an entirely different type of abbrev.
en_AU is to en_IN as AuE is to ..?

tho I suppose its hinglish, banglish and such

Bob
I pretty much just invented InE to fit the pattern :P

"I would have you know, sir, that you are a knave and a rapscallion, and I demand satisfaction."
That's not very indian ;p
But that's probably the thing

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That sounds more Monty Python.
I suppose it's more the all caps SIR

"Please sir, the wirus is infecting all your system as we speak this very moment."

3:03 AM
I seriously need to read more fiction.

Indian english got dragged right from the victorian era to the modern era.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Are you Windows Company?

lol

My company does have many windows.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It seems to have tripped and blacked out for a few decades along the way.

3:04 AM
Infact, from the outside our building looks like mostly windows.

@Bob consider this

@JourneymanGeek What I was trying to do was avoid drama in the first place.

You have a core of highly educated people, speaking perfect victorian english. And then things got wierd. With less clever people

@bwDraco the secret to avoiding drama is to do as little as possible. And when you do, maximise the impact.

3:05 AM
See? Mostly Windows.

It was oblique to me and didn't seem to be directly offensive.

Bob
@MichaelFrank annnnnnd I can probably find where you work

Or as I do "Dude, not coooool"

The sad part about learning soft skills is that they need to be practiced live, not merely learned in a lecture or a chat session.

@Bob Yea, probably. But which floor. ;)

3:06 AM
@bwDraco I learnt chatroom chat skills in chatrooms ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's an absolutely insane thing to do

So, what's the road forward for me?

@Bob some people do saner things. Like drugs and alcohol. I did IRC

What do I need to work on next?

@bwDraco proper self depreciating humour.

3:08 AM
How is this relevant?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek s/depreciating/deprecating/

@Bob my jokes lose value over time. Its basic economics.
@bwDraco Stuff like that is a very good way to understand context and to defuse issues.

Bob
@bwDraco To an extent? The ability to ignore people calling you names.
And poking fun at yourself tends to disarm others.

So is a lack of a sense of humor a disqualification?

Bob
The idea being to be on the same level as others, not some high and mighty god they must bow to.
That tends to get people to listen. 'course, depends on the person...

3:10 AM
I really want to just focus on doing what's right, using the moderation tools properly, etc.

@bwDraco Its something I use a ton of as a mod. Its a good way to verbally disarm someone and to defuse a situation

...okay, there was an incident a while back precisely for this reason:
Sep 21 at 22:58, by bwDraco
No, seriously. Clear the star on that message.

Also, understanding context.

@bwDraco Maybe focusing on doing what's required of a good patron of chat, without the ability to use mod tools is the place to start.

3:12 AM
So, can I still move up without a sense of humor?

If I need to use any of my modly powers, outside maybe a certain level of moral authority, things have basically gone down the drain.

Alternatives? I just want to do what's right for the community.

Bob
@bwDraco What's right for the community is probably just participating, chatting.

I'm not sure how relevant that incident is now, given that it happened three months ago...

Ok, sure, I can redact your passwords, but if I'm kicking anyone but our favourite troll, it clearly means I've failed to actually defuse the situation
and I don't need my mod hat to do that.

Bob
3:14 AM
Yea, sure, I'm a room owner. I've done room-ownery things maybe once a month, and that's only to move the odd message.

I've pretty much gotten my temper under control, but have I hit a dead end?

Bob
If your goal is to gain access to the ability to <X>, why do you want said ability?

depends on what you consider a dead end.

Bob
How is <X> helpful?

I'm not the kind of person who likes jokes. I've long had a history of being very serious.

3:15 AM
Rather than aspiring to a title, which I'd add is mostly meaningless, just do what you feel needs doing

That points to... perfectionism.

I quite literally stood for SU mod cause 1) I could clear spam faster 2) @HackToHell kept bothering the mods
@bwDraco I'm not perfect

Bob
@JourneymanGeek And because everyone kept telling you to :P

@bwDraco It all loops back to doing what is required of your station.

I guess I need to remember that not perfect != bad.

3:17 AM
@Bob Yup

My posts tend to be extensively edited for spelling and grammar. Do I need to stop this practice?

essentially, you're ready to be a mod or a RO when someone else starts doing it
@bwDraco stop caring so much about perception

@bwDraco That's different. I thought we were talking about chat?

or what other people think

Bob
@JourneymanGeek And I'm probably being a hypocrite here :P

3:18 AM
@MichaelFrank It's a related issue, and it ties into my being too serious.

@Bob you're also the only room regular in your timezone ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not that it means much, what with me being nocturnal and the room being dead during daytime.

I need to stop trying to be a paragon of technical accuracy in the content I write and just focus on the point.

I mean, I quite literally set up 24 hour RO coverage cause of the troll issue we seem to have under control.
(so I could bloody well not wake up to find the room on fire!)

I have unblocked @Dog.

3:19 AM
And that's worked.

Bob
oh lord

Mostly

@bwDraco Quality answers are a good thing. Nailing someone to a cross cause they slipped up on a rule in chat once or twice is probably not so good.

@MichaelFrank I no longer allow this.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek you added David and Guy for that, yea? :P

3:20 AM
Any ideas on how to practice skills for handling incidents?

@bwDraco WWJMGD?
2

@Bob yup

Huh?

i just need a ro in Africa and Antarctica .... ;p

What Would Journeyman Geek Do? Play on words of the saying "What Would Jesus Do?"

Bob
3:22 AM
"How do I whitelist some certs?" "Turn off cert warnings completely!"

There has been a shift towards a lighter hand when moderating...

@MichaelFrank steal your socks?
well pillow

@bwDraco I think you're still looking at this the wrong way. Non-mods don't moderate, they lead by example.

Well, that's the hard part. What should I do?
How do I set an example for others to follow?

Work with the tools you have. If you see something wrong, call it out. If need be, flag it.

3:25 AM
Oct 21 '15 at 10:18, by DragonLord
@JourneymanGeek: How do I demonstrate that I've learned to moderate calmly and fairly? I would hate to set a bad example for the community.

@bwDraco to be frank, I've never cared about setting an example, or even being a moderator

I've already considered role-playing as a mod, without being one.

I mean, I've been one
In lots of places
but I can't tell someone what the secret sauce is.

Chicken-and-egg problem.
The last two weeks saw an intensive focus on learning to stay calm and to calm down as quickly as possible should something happen. While self-control will always be my number-one priority, I will refocus my resources a bit.

I'm heading off for the day, I might not be back on until after New Years. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays, and Happy New Years to you all. Have fun, and don't be too rowdy!

Bob
3:29 AM
@bwDraco By chatting normally.

I'll work on just behaving my best and setting an example for the community, doing what's necessary when it's necessary.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Do as little as you can? :P

@bwDraco heh. You do realise I became an RO by accident right?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Happy Christmas/NY!

@Bob Well, pretty much
and when I do, make sure its as effective as possible so I don't need to do it again
But its less 'as little' in terms of 'inaction' than lots of little nudges
One sees the bolder, but not the little grains of sand before it.

3:31 AM
I'll work on making smart decisions when it matters. As I've said, my parents have stunted the growth of my soft skills and I am hard at work catching up.

(also, confuse the hell out of people with homespun wisdom)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek you need to do those more :P
I can't get the tone right :(

The path is clear. I'll try to behave like a diamond mod would and set an example for the community to follow.

@bwDraco the irony here is the most important step for being a mod for you is... not wanting to be a mod.

3:35 AM
I just need to not take things so seriously, that's the problem.
I'm picky to a fault.

(I mean, we've had this conversation quite a lot)

Learn to relax, not be so anxious about every little mistake.
I will bring this up with my counselors next week, but expect to be working on the issue as early as tomorrow.

Also, consider this
Most of this is introspection.

Care to expand upon this?

A good chunk of moderation is understanding the motivations of others and trying to nudge them.
You're going "me" and "I"
I go "We" and "you" when moderating. I need to understand who is trying to pick a fight with who, I need to work out how exactly to defuse it without anyone noticing

3:39 AM
I will refocus efforts here. Thanks for the tip.

Bob
I would suggest spending, let's say, a couple months to half a year just chatting normally and not thinking of or taking any (chat) mod actions at all.

Occationally before things even happen, even if I annoy a regular a little, to avoid a bigger issue in future.

@Bob I doubt it takes this long...

Bob
@bwDraco Why the rush?

Because I'm very far behind.
I'm 24 and I still behave like a teenager in many ways.

3:40 AM
"behind" what?

Bob
And how is trying to put yourself in the limelight by moderating others supposed to help? Why not integrate yourself further into the community by being a normal user for a bit?

I have already stepped back a bit.
I just want to know what's next.

I think CS Lewis is a pretty clever chap about this.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Speaking of quotes, goodreads.com/quotes/tag/living-in-the-present

I know I need to grow up. I've been in talks with my parents about this and have tried to push forward, but my mom is fearful of bad things happening :\

Bob
3:44 AM
"grow up" is such a ... nebulous term

Bob
Society treats 18 as this magical transition age
But, really, you just gain more experiences every year until you die.

speaking of grown up...
I need to go clean part of my dad's toilet wall, then go take a shower ;p

Bob
o.O

I care a lot about behaving like an adult, being able to make intelligent decisions, but my parents have little to no confidence in my ability to do this. I'm caught in a situation where I cannot practice key soft skills on the field because my parents fear I will fail, potentially with dire consequences.
I've told my mom many times, "let me fail so I can learn", but she won't let me.
After all, risk cannot be eliminated, and some exposure to risk is necessary to learn key skills.
Oct 2 at 4:16, by bwDraco
I realize the world is full of hazards and dangers and that my parents want to protect me from the "dangerous" outside world, but the fact of the matter is that risk cannot be completely eliminated and that I do need to be exposed to some risk to properly mature.

Dog
3:47 AM
Huh just got an international text message from Singapore.

lol
It's for this reason that my soft skills are so poorly developed.

Dog
Apparently i have $53 to spend in that boat roof hotel place

Bob
@Dog was it signed with a paw print?

AFK while I talk with mom on this.

@Bob nothing more adult than housework ._.
(Dad used to clean his own toilet. He can't cause of the operation. And erm. he dosen't meet my standards so I'm basically disinfecting the toilet twice a week, and picking a section that's not to my standard and getting it there)

3:56 AM
I brought up developing social skills, and my mother has suggested volunteering and community service. This sounds like a good idea and I will bring this up with my counselors.
(Besides, it looks good on my resume :) )

Q: Not able to access Internet after running sudo chown -R $USER$USER /usr/lib/

lmiguelvargasfI wanted to update PyCharm, and when running Pycharm it was not possible since it said that I did not have enough permissions. So I run the following command: $ sudo chown -R $USER$USER /usr/lib/ I was able to update PyCharm successfully, but now my Internet connection is not working, and actu...

I love those questions

"oh just chmod 777 it, it'll work!"
chmod/chown with -R needs a great big warning label on it

Given that I deeply care about the homeless, I might want to consider volunteering at a food pantry...
Sep 3 at 17:13, by bwDraco
It sucks for these people to get barely enough money to buy food.

4:23 AM
@Bob didn't @Dog? It's chmod

Bob
@HackToHell I need this.

It's the perfect laptop <3
Best part is I will be able to afford it when it comes out

5:05 AM
I kinda want to suggest the HP OMEN laptops.

meh
except for the horrible input scheme, the razer blade pro is near perfect for me

GTX 1070 for $1600.

bad keyboard / trackpad positioning and keyboard layout

Then again, the new OMEN systems may be too large or heavy for some...

@bwDraco I'd probably settle for a cheaper 1070 system and keep my desktop... it's not a bad idea, really

5:08 AM
My laptop alone weighs about 8 lb as equipped.
The OMEN 17 is about 7.3 lb.
Not the heaviest 17" laptop by a long shot (high-end gaming models routinely approach 10 lbs) but that's nontrivial.
At least HP's 230W AC adapter is a lightweight, slimline design.
It's about the size and weight of a more ordinary, mainstream 17" laptop, if a bit thicker.
Limited upgradability is an issue; the only user-serviceable part is the RAM.
It looks like a case of a more modern, mainstream approach to the gaming laptop (sleeker design, tightly-packed parts, longer battery life, limited serviceability).
The battery is unusually large, at 95.8 Wh, so it seems to have better battery life than most gaming-class laptops when used for day-to-day productivity and web browsing.
4K display comes standard.

5:28 AM
4k on laptops... is a bit silly IMO
@allquixotic the trackpad off to the side?

5:52 AM
heh. I need to buy new dog collars. I was going to do it if it didn't rain. Its raining
Since the usual pet store dosen't seem to have padded ones.
and since we don't do harnesses, and there's occational tugging, I kinda insist on the padded ones ._.
and its raining ._. . It can wait ;p
er

Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.O

@wat Please, please. This is flaggable material.
...looking back, is "please cut it out, this can be seen as offensive" a better response?
I'm hoping to learn from my mistakes and have a clear sense of what (not) to do.
Instead of threatening action, I'm warning about the problem with the post content itself.
I'm trying to get a better idea of how best to respond here.
(no, Clippy, go away)

6:30 AM
>_>
@bwDraco its useful to understand the intent of the poster.
What's he aiming to do? Why has he posted it?
In a sense, its easier in a chatroom for me since I typically know most of the regulars.

I'll be doing intent checks in the future. I'm actually pretty good at sensing intent IRL; I just need to practice it online rather than threaten flags/mod action/etc.
Also, I am seriously considering volunteering work. I hate to say this, but there is no substitute for real-world experience. There are things you genuinely cannot practice on your own time.
Jun 7 at 14:43, by bwDraco
So the consensus is that while these skills are clearly improvable, I need to do something specific that demands these skills to improve them. It seems I can't just learn them on my own time.
About two weeks ago, I had started taking steps to improve self-control, including meditation and stopping myself more quickly in the event I lose control of myself. Thus far, these have worked as intended (much better than originally expected, in fact). The problem is that this is not enough.

@JourneymanGeek Production firmware is starting to become available.

Not every model, though. Also, my R7800 isn't affected in the first place.

6:40 AM
Pondering unpinning the star ;p

Yup.
I wanted to ask whether it was still necessary to keep it pinned.
Wait until the production firmware is out for all models, or unpin it now?

(actually not sure if anyone here has a netgear. I'm asus and dlink for now, though I might be just building my own and adding some commercial grade APs next buildout I do)
@bwDraco tbh, I suspect knowing the crowd here, if anyone did have a netgear they'd know

Bob
6:59 AM
oh god
one of these Sydney VPSes charges 25c/GB
@JourneymanGeek If I had a netgear device I'd just bin it
well, they're not as bad as netcomm at least

@Bob dlink!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek better than netcomm
I've had two netcomm routers die
in the same room

I'm not sure

Bob
maybe that room is haunted

Dlink dosen't die
it just sucks

Bob
7:01 AM
by the ghosts of dead netcomm routers
@JourneymanGeek it sucks, then it dies
like, two months of instability
one month of refusing to bridge WAN/LAN
dead

Funny thing is the AC router's fine as an AP

Bob
@JourneymanGeek my asus ac router's been pretty solid

All I did was turn off DHCP. And It can't be my backups and backup backups since they've been going through it

Bob
my tplink routers have all been incredibly solid

@Bob my current main router's an asus

Bob
7:03 AM
my billion modem/router has an uptime of >200 days

also, damnit, I really miss windows 7's network map thing ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, nmap

Not the same
nmap tells you what there is. Mostly.
This tells you where things are.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, the horribly incomplete map
which relies on other windows machines responding
specifically windows too, iirc

My home network looks roughly like this
Actually no
It looks nothing like that
@Bob worked well enough for me that I just needed to do minor fixups
Pretty sure nmap dosen't see dumb switches.

Bob
7:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think the windows one relies on a windows machine being at the other end of the switch

ah
Yeah, there's that
I still liked it, and it was a strange thing to remove from 8 and 10 ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek firewalls blocked it iirc
and of course now you have more smartphones you'll never see on it

I don't consider smartphones part of the main network
heck, I probably have more (potential) systems on the network

Bob
@JourneymanGeek phones, tablets, media players, NASes

I have a HP stream, x220 (which I really wish my dad would switch to), a r60 (haiku box)....

Bob
7:21 AM
lots more assorted networked junk now

@Bob yup. roughly

Bob
and people would say it's broken if those didn't show

and yes. 3 things transmitting.

Bob
then there's the whole IoT thing
that all makes it less useful
probably not useful enough to justify the security and privacy risks

I'd like to be able to decide on that
and the underlying framework's still there

Bob
7:23 AM
soooo... they removed it. simple.

they just took out the viewer

Bob
@JourneymanGeek disabled by default, no?

Not on 8

Good night, folks. I'm going to push hard towards improving soft skills over the coming weeks, without abandoning my core focus on self-control.

8
Q: How do I view the my network map in windows 8.1?

Journeyman GeekI've recently discovered an extremely useful feature called Link Layer Topology Discovery in Windows 7 - I click on "See Full Map" in the network and sharing center. And it outputs this lovely, very useful network diagram However, in windows 8 , See Full Map is missing. However, the underly...

And you could run LLTD on linux

7:36 AM
hm
there's an lltd scanner for linux

7:47 AM
hm. It vaguely works

Bob
@JourneymanGeek disabled by default in win10

hm
Seems to work for nyx

Bob
Also LLDP is the standard one, not MS LLTP

So dosen't seem to be
LLTD

Bob
huh. I just checked and the responder is manual start only

7:58 AM
wierd

Bob
maybe upgraded systems are different
