00:00 - 19:0019:00 - 00:00

12:01 AM
@OtavioMacedo I'm glad you like it
:D
I was going to bed but I still had some time

@Alenanno Ha, I knew it was you!

XD
Who else? :P

Santa Claus!

Ahah
It even has the stress mark! :P

We have the fanciest room name in SE!

12:05 AM
Ahah
Even @Evpok liked it. By the way, @OtavioMacedo did you see the discussion about the merging?

Go up

scrolls

If all goes well, the NLP/CL proposal will be merged into Linguistics.

I'm all for it!

12:12 AM
I thought so, honestly... :D Good then!

If the sites are merged, does Linguistics.SE get a flood of new users overnight?
I mean, all users that commited to NLP are going to be automatically registered on Linguistics.SE?

Well, certainly we'll get the users that committed and the users that in the future would have joined that site
I don't know about the technical side

Very good!

but I guess yes...
By the way we increased some traffic again
:D
I'm always looking at the stats lol

Yes, and questions/day as well!

12:16 AM
Yay!
I'll go to bed now, night @OtavioMacedo
:)

@Alenanno good night!

12:39 AM
@Cerberus, I think you might like this: filiuslunae.com/2012/02/how-not-to-speak-latin-psa.html

3 hours later…
3:39 AM
@OtavioMacedo Ahh very nice!
I think he is overdoing his pronunciation a little bit, but I agree with his condemnation of the way many Englishmen pronounce Latin.
Basically any other language than English gets it a hundred times better.

3 hours later…
7:06 AM
@Alenanno Aaaah, the moderators' malediction :)

Hi!
I'm the only black guy in the room again.
You're all so blue.

True. Your time will come ;)

Heh.
Aren't you active on French as well?

3 hours later…
10:20 AM
I an mostly active in fr. Which is a good thing, since I am a mod there :p

10:38 AM
Ah, just as I thought.
Vive la France!
Et vive l'Europe!

11:15 AM
@Cerberus Do you like our new title? :D
In school we didn't read "rosae" as "rosae", but as "rose", by the way.
Hey @OtavioMacedo and @Gigili

Nice! I changed my title-bar font to Dejavu to be able to see the symbols.
@Alenanno Yeah most people used to use Italian/Church pronunciation in school here too.

@Cerberus Oh! :D What were you using before?

But that was before my time.

Hi Alenanno.

11:30 AM
@Alenanno Times New Roman. You?

@Cerberus In the browser preferences?

No, in Windows.

I don't use Windows actually
let me check

Ubuntu? <3

Ahah no the other one
I can't install Ubuntu natively, otherwise I would like to have it, too.

11:32 AM
Oh, no, not....Apple!?

No, ananas.

Haha.

LoL

Next thing you're going to tell me you're Christian!

11:34 AM
What else could go wrong?
Let's make a list

You could like leather sofas...

And you'll say haha in response.

Uhm

I might just do that!

I like sitting on them, but maybe cleaning them is horrible

11:35 AM
Or you might like mushrooms! shudders

I don't like mushrooms

Phew!!!

Well, I like the smell when you're cooking them

That's a relief.

but not the consistency

11:35 AM
Oh no...

they are both

I hate everything about them.

solid and liquid, ew
When you chew one, it's like chewing a sponge
XD

Ewww.
And how do you feel about squid?

Uhm I'm not sure. Can you post a pic?
Of the type you're talking about

11:37 AM
Any kind of mollusc, really.

Uhm

But mainly octopus and squid.
They have this rather rubbery consistency.

I think I like it
for example, I love the "seafood salad", I don't know how it's called in english.

But it's probably not the same as mushrooms, more rubbery, less spongey.
What is it in Italian?

Listen, if it's fried
It's HELLA good

11:39 AM
Yikes. Would you eat them?

Fried helps, certainly. But then there's still the mushy, rubbery inside...
@Gigili I have.

I don't have anything against eating weird animals in general.

Check that. That is GOOD.
:Q___

Oh, this looks yummy:
From your link.

11:41 AM
:|
XD

Sorry, but ehm...

My link?

I won't be able to make it to your dinner party.
Yes, your link.

I meant this:

Oh, yes.

11:42 AM
That + fried + lemon = :D

Called calamaris here.

Yeah, calamari in italian. That other one is "Insalata di mare"

That is the best kind of octopus or squid I know, but it's still too rubbery for me, sorry.

Yummy means something makes you puke? Looks so, yes.

@Alenanno Ah, yes. What does calamari mean, actually?
@Gigili Yeah that was ironic.

11:43 AM
@Cerberus Squid. :D

Maybe

@Alenanno Agreed!

@Alenanno Heh, OK, but what are its parts?
Mare = sea.

@Cerberus You mean the etymology?

Huh, the picture went away.

11:44 AM
But Cala?
@Gigili You didn't delete it yourself?

Actually it has a weird etymology, apparently.

Can you try again?
@Alenanno Yes?

Ah no, not weird after all! :D It comes from calamaio, which is this
Guess why?
xD

Ahh calamus!
I see.
Calamus = reed => pen.

I don't see, Octopus has some kind of ink inside?
Oh now I see.

11:46 AM
I think so...
Cephalopod ink is a dark pigment released into water by most species of cephalopod, usually as an escape mechanism. All cephalopods, with the exception of the Nautilidae and the species of octopus belonging to the suborder Cirrina, are able to release ink. The ink is released from the ink sacs (located between the gills) and is dispersed more widely by accompanying its release with a jet of water from the funnel. Its dark color is caused by its main constituent, melanin. Each species of cephalopod produces slightly differently coloured inks; generally, octopuses produce black ink, squid i...

I should use glasses more often.

"squid ink is blue-black"

So there is no mare in calamari?

By the way, @Cerberus My OS uses Lucida Grande
@Cerberus Apparently not...

Ah I see...
Well, that is pretty cool.
So it is like "pen-fish".

11:48 AM
Or "penny"
:D
ahahah

Do you still have word calam- that means something like pen?
Haha.
<cue Gigi>

Shouldn't it be hahaha instead?

In Italy we laugh as "ahahah"

We have Qalam, which means pen.

English speakers laugh as hahaha
While Spanish laugh as jajaja
and Russian people as xaxaxa
(the x in russian is like "ch" in German)

11:50 AM
We say ahahah when we face an embarrassing situation, like the food you were talking about ... Octopus? ahahah

Like "uneasy"?

Double when.

I think we use "eheheh" for uneasy or less enthusiastic laugh
or "ihihih" for evil laugh
and Muahahuahuahu for laughing really loud

I cannot imagine someone laughing like ahahah

XD
Well, we don't pronounce the H in Italian, so... it's like a-a-a-a
Maybe we laugh like English speakers
but when writing it's "ahahah"
I mean in Italian, the words "ha" and "a" are pronounced the same way, but one is a verb, the latter is a preposition.
We don't say "HHHHHa"

11:53 AM
Um, so finally you laugh like hahaha?

Probably

ahahah, I won!

You won? :P

Or you can simply write haha, no matter what the situation is. Like Cerb, very stylish.

@Gigili Ah! That must be the Latin word, right?

11:57 AM
@Gigili Always the A first! Like my nickname/gravatar! :D

@Cerberus An international word actually.

I prefer fricatives on both ends. It's neater.

@Alenanno Heh.

@Gigili Just for you, I checked posts with laughs on FB from my friends... They all start with "aha..." :D

@Gigili Well, it must come from some language? It resembles the Greek/Latin word so much that it can hardly be just a shared Proto-Indo-European root? The Romans stole it from the Greeks.

12:00 PM
Maybe they just put their fingers on keyboard and laugh! Hitting 'a' and 'h' consecutively.

Ahah :P I found one occurrence with "ha"
but the tendency is still "ah"
How do Germans laugh?
ha?

@Cerberus Might be Latin then, because you use it.
Germans don't laugh.

That would be boring. :D
Ich will das Lachen hören! :P

Better than laughing mistakenly?

(=I want to hear the laugh)... if I got it right
@Gigili What? I didn't get it, sorry.

12:03 PM
@Gigili I think you took it from Greek, that would make sense.

If you say so ...
@Alenanno Is your sentence correct?

@Gigili I am not sure, you're the German expert here! :D

Am I? Whoa.

Maybe I wrote the accusative wrong...?
How would you write it?

Ich will den lache(n/r)-sound hören, maybe?
What do you think @Cerberus?

12:06 PM
Why den?

Um, it's {m}?

@Gigili Maybe? Aren't you a high-rep user on the German SE?
:D

Hih. Because I asked a bunch of questions.
I'll ask in GLU chat.

@Gigili I always figured you were German, you're not?

I'm not, sorry for disappointing you.

12:10 PM
Where are you from?

Shhhh, Top-secret.
Actually you're the only one who doesn't know it!

Really? Then tell me! :D

in German Language and Usage, 3 mins ago, by Em1
Meinst du: Das Lachen würde ich gerne hören

Ah totally wrong. :D

Apparently we should practice more. =)

12:14 PM
I am currently trying to improve my German, give me some months... :D

Me too.

So, you're not going to tell us (me) where you come from? :D

I think your sentence was OK, Ale. Except that you would normally say something like "ich möchte" rather than "ich will".

In order to sound less aggressive?

Yes.

12:16 PM
That's a good point. :P

Just as you would rather say "vorrei" than "voglio", no?

Yeah, depending on some factors, but yes. :)

By the way, can "voglio" be used without an infinitive, just an object?

Sure

"Ti voglio"?

12:18 PM
Yep!
Or
Voglio del latte.

Right.
Same in Dutch. And even in Latin it is possible, I believe.
Although...

Oh... :D

I don't know.

Although?
xD

Perhaps it is very poetic or informal.
Oh, and can you say "voglio alla casa", or something like that?

12:19 PM
What are you trying to say?

"I want home".
Which is possible in English and Dutch, but it is very informal.

What does that mean?

"I want to go home".
But I gather it is not very common in Italian, hehe.

Uhm...
I'd say "voglio andare a casa", so nope. :D

OK.

12:21 PM
"voglio casa" means kind of nothing except the literal "I want home"

Normally you would need "go" in Dutch too.
"Ik wil naar huis".

But in Sardinian we have a verb only for that situation.

I would say that.
Oh!

Which I'll tell you about later, because now I'm going to have lunch. :D
(cooking pasta myself)

@Alenanno Iran.

12:22 PM
@Gigili Ah ok! :D Now I know too ahah :)
Talk to you later guys! bye also to @OtavioMacedo
goes AFK

Yay Pasta!

1:18 PM
Ok I'm back @Cerberus @Gigili and @OtavioMacedo :D

@Alenanno How was your lunch?

@OtavioMacedo Good thanks. :P
I need to share a Linguistic joke lol

You need to? Urgent need?

XD

1:22 PM
hahah

I love you too.

@Alenanno, are you in the mood for some script testing? :-)

@OtavioMacedo Sure!

You cannot laugh like that, ending with 'h'.

1:23 PM
just click and install

Now I see the button!
What format should I write the date?

dd/mm/yyyy
It's not validating anything yet
if you input anything wrong, it'll crash :-P

Ahah
"> Challenge Week #1 (from 13/02/2012 to 15/02/2012)

> This Week's topic was **TOPIC NAME** and our glorious winner was **Santa Claus**!"

Nice work!
@Gigili You speak Persian then?

1:32 PM
Now?

In general, what is your mother tongue?

Persian.

I don't know much about it honestly, so I was wondering, is it similar to Arabic?

I speak over a million languages.

:P

1:33 PM
Yes, it is somehow.
But Arabic is more complicated, or I feel so because it's a foreign language for me.

Yeah? As with grammar?

Yes and writing style. But the alphabet is mostly the same, except for 4 letters that Arabic doesn't have them.

Oh I see. I like those writing systems. :D
I like most writing systems actually
Especially some weird-looking ones

All foreign languages are weird-looking, no?

Yeah, but for me French is less weird than Tamil, or Hindi, or Arabic
I mean, at least the alphabet is like mine
more or less

1:37 PM
That makes more sense.

I'm fond of most languages. I kind of like them all. :D

Me too, I like learning languages.

I wanted to learn Klingon too, but it's not very versatile

I read an article somewhere that learning new languages help your brain works much better than its normal way.

Maybe I should learn Sindarin :D
@Gigili Ah maybe I heard that too. :)

1:40 PM
Sorry, I have to study for my exam. I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?

Whenever you want, feel free to come to this chat room!
:D
And call other people too.

Thank you. =)

I don't own this room
it's everyone's
:P

Oh, I knew it.

I like to see people in here

1:41 PM
See you later.

Later!

1 hour later…
3:26 PM
@Cerberus and @OtavioMacedo What do you guys think of this one?

@Alenanno what's this?

A chair!
You put your butt on that big square and your knees on those little two
It's supposed to force you to keep your back straight

2 hours later…
5:51 PM
@Alenanno Ah my friend has one of those!
She says it works for her.
I tried it once, and it was all right.

They cost a lot, though!
That's the problem.

So I've noticed a strange trend in some speakers here in western New York.
Sounds like nasalisation, raising, and lengthening going on sentence-finally, and sometimes before /r/.
I don't have any recordings or anything, but I could probably imitate it.

6:13 PM
@Alenanno I think my friend's health insurance paid for them! She had lots of back problems.
Hi Jon!
@JonPurdy Hmm an imitation would be fun! Or perhaps you could find a Youtube video?

6:29 PM
@Gigili Isn't Farsi Indo-European?

I believe it is!
Isn't Indo-Iranian a branch of its own of the Indo-European family?

According to the Wikipedia, it is:
Persian (, ) is an Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. It is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and countries which historically came under Persian influence. The Persian language is classified as a continuation of Middle Persian, the official religious and literary language of Sassanid Persia, itself a continuation of Old Persian, the language of the Persian Empire in the Achaemenid era. Persian is a pluricentric language and its grammar is similar to that of many contemporary European languages. Persian has ca. 110 million nat...

Yay!
A venerable language.

6:46 PM
Wow 5 users online at the same time on Linguistics! :D

Let's march on SE headquarters and take over!
We can drag our poor, semi-visible comrades along in a cart.

This is a great time

Your nose is all weird. Are your FB pictures old?

My nose is weird?
:D What?

No offence, but...

6:51 PM
XD
I thought you were talking about my real nose! LOL

@Alenanno, any news on the merge with NLP?

@OtavioMacedo Not yet...
I think they are going to post a Meta question when it happens, although I also think they'd let me know anyway before doing that.
Hello @KitFox, are you the same Kit I know?
:D

Yup.

Ah ok...
