00:00 - 18:0018:00 - 00:00

6:00 PM
So I need to be careful with what I say

I'd like to think I'm nice, but then I am forced to flag quite a few first posts from review...

I'll keep that in mind. Thank you

@incesterror21 Not at all! We're a nice bunch here on Puzzling :-)

I made sure to address the mods with "your highness" already

Honestly, being nice to people in SO hurts me more than being a close-voting jerk that does not give constructive feedback at all.

6:01 PM
Yeah puzzling is a nice community

@BeastlyGerbil nowadays

Not always? I wouldn't know

You young'uns weren't here for the Great Puzzling War.

A war?

Oooooo tell me more...

6:02 PM
@Randal'Thor Did it involve sending the enemy unsolvable cryptic clues?

How is that possible

@incesterror21 metaphor

@Sumurai8 Being a jerk is always easier, sure.

@Sumurai8 No, but it did on occasion involve writing puzzles whose solutions were insults or site political statements.

Wait when was it? I was probably only 10, maybe 11 if it was a few years ago
Lol I just imagined a 10 year old standing up to deliver a political speech in front of a load of MPs :P

6:04 PM
Nov-Dec 2014.

@Displayname I don't like being a jerk, and I don't find it particularly easy. However, on SO when I tell people what they can improve in their post to get a good post, people prefer to throw insults at me than actually improving their post. A few times people even revenge-downvote if they can.

@Randal'Thor oh lol I was 10 :P

@BeastlyGerbil Wait, that means you're 12 now?
BAN HIM! BAN THE WITCH!

Wait no that maths is wrong...

Can a user be banned because of their age?

6:06 PM
@incesterror21 yeah you have to be 13. Like me or Saiid

@incesterror21 An account can be removed if the minimum age is not met, because legal reasons.

@incesterror21 Yes. In fact, SE has a legal duty to delete the account of anyone under 13.

Q: Are moderators required to report users younger than 13?

Mad ScientistUsers younger than 13 are deleted immediately once SE is informed about the case. The reason for this is COPPA, the US law intended to protect children online. The guidelines as far as I understand them for me as a moderator are that I should report such users to SE, and they'll use a special de...

You people always seem to have a link ready

Well it's my birthday in a couple of months so I'll no longer be youngest on site :'(

We are, in fact, a neural network posing as different users. We have all the knowledge.

6:08 PM
@incesterror21 That's just me :-) Racking up 65k on SFF taught me a lot about search-fu, and then being a mod taught me a lot about finding my way around meta.

I believe you are all part of the puzzling engine acting like real users

@Sumurai8 You are legion. Resistance is futile.

Q: Resistance is futile

TrythOn the sunny morning of April 5th, 2063, an alien spaceship started orbiting the Earth. Among the cries of "It's an alien spaceship!" and "Ohm my god!" from the people, governments noticed that they were beaming down a colorful message: Unfortunately, because of interference from the atmospher...

And another link

@Sumurai8 I only have 4k on SO and haven't been active there for a while, so I don't have much experience. But does the example you described really represent the majority of new users you've encountered?

TBH there are so many SO users that some of them are bound to be not very nice...

6:13 PM
There are so many SO users that some of them are bound to be pretty much anything.
Up to and including being the same person.

I don't understand too much of what you are talking. But I'll get to understand your language soon I guess.
That's it for now. I'll see you all later

SO = Stack Overflow, the flagship site.

@Displayname I've not been doing much on SO in the last few months. But in general, if I receive a comment on one of the comments I leave of a low quality question, it is not very nice. That is the stuff I can't really edit to improve to something worth keeping myself. I think it has to do with the kind of person asking the question. If I can't really improve a question myself, they really did not put a lot of effort into it. They just come for a quick reply and do not care about anything...

Are you ready for this? I have an incredible, might, god-aweing 167 REP on SO with a high scoring question with 6 UPVOTES!!!!!!!

...after that. I guess telling them anything but the answer they are seeking is bound to get a negative reaction from such users. I can't really get used to it though.
@BeastlyGerbil That's actually not that bad.

6:17 PM
Really? I just use it for homework.

I only have 7 posts with score >= 6.

I know enough about python to know that >= means 'more than or equal to' :P
I know quite a bit about python and I taught myself HTML, thats the extent of my programming knowledge

6:34 PM
I started with javascript when I tried to understand programming languages. Python is nice to start with too - not too many restrictions.
Anyway, since you know Python, you are hereby tasked to write a better script than I did for the puzzle I have not yet posted.

2 hours later…
8:17 PM
@Displayname Just out of curiosity, why did you post a copy of my user info up there? I'm not objecting or anything, just puzzled. Something to do with the discussion of specialization? Or was there something earlier that I missed? (I haven't been here much this weekend.)

@GarethMcCaughan It was directed at this and this. I wanted to show an example of a top-user of PSE who only earned his rep with answers.
Well, at least most of his rep. No idea how much rep you earned with editing etc :P

9:04 PM
@Randal'Thor I'd be fine with it. I've seen clues like "Destroyed acccomplishment indeed (8)" for DE(FEAT)ED. Some people don't allow word-splitting, but if it's along etymological boundary lines I don't mind.

Okay, go solve my puzzle now

Q: Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark

Sumurai8 This puzzle follows the convention that anything outside a quote is flavour text. So last night I left my computer running. You know - when computers get older they want to bend the rules a bit. Don't go to sleep when you tell them to and so on. I didn't feel like discussing it with them last ...

Surely most languages have a built-in or freely available implementation of an unlimited integer type? (and IIRC longs are only a Python 2 thing, I think ints in Python 3 automatically have no limit)

9:20 PM
In Python and Java I know about them. In C, C++ I don't think such a thing exists natively. In javascript, I think it will turn things into floats, and finally gives up with +Infinity.

Yay, I found the easter egg...

Huh, interesting. Just thought it was a tad specific.

It might help people waste less time if they want to process the entire hex at once instead of in parts.

Aaarrgh. System problems are SOOO annoying.

@Displayname Good. You won't understand it until you have solved the puzzle >:)
@Rubio Oh dear. What's broken?

9:35 PM
What isn't. My wireless router - which is my main front door router, so is the interface between my internal network and the internet - puked and died yesterday. Replaced it with one that's supposed to support the same custom version of firmware I use, but the new one is proving to be a serious hassle getting that new firmware actually loaded.
and now today, my browser has decided it won't load all the tabs from my last browsing session without hanging, so it took me forever to even get back in here
my other machine blew up its main hard drive a couple weeks ago
it's been a rough couple weeks

Hrmmm; are you on Santa's naughty list?
But yeah, that does not sound like much fun at all

@Displayname Ah, yes. I saw the comment about someone only good at writing or solving riddles, but somehow misread it and failed to notice the "or solving" bit. D'oh.

1 hour later…
11:00 PM
Sometimes I really hate the Australian timezone
I go to sleep, and for once the chat is actually lively.

Hehehe

Time to get working on the fortnightly challenge

11:58 PM
damn. i'm going to miss capping rep for today by 7. hehe
