I'm starting to think David Foerster might be a little overzealous on CVs askubuntu.com/q/811589/#comment1227300_811589

2:21 PM
heh, why is this private? reddit.com/r/AskUbuntu

2:40 PM
wat
o_O

@edwinksl why actually?

@Anwar no idea. i don't even know who made that in the first place. i just messaged the sub's mods though, so let's see what happens.

let me know if you find anything new

will do

3:14 PM
Good afternoon ! :)

Wooo, apparently there is a fix for my docker issues, which is apparently was caused by filesystem mounting and the fix is on the way to Ubuntu Snappy . I contacted the docker team on launchpad and they responded @NathanOsman

@Serg your solution here didn't work for me askubuntu.com/questions/542922/…. I want to disable the dns from my ISP
@cl-netbox good afternoon!

@Anwar Hi Anwar ! :) How are you ? :)

I'm fine. Thanks for asking

3:22 PM
@Anwar see this askubuntu.com/a/855192/295286 That older answer needs to be updated and i wrote it way back when i knew very little. The dhclient method works all the time

@Anwar That is good - indeed ! :)

My provider is 3G and there is not DHCP only option in gui

@Serg Are you feeling better today ? Back to 100 % health ? :)

@Anwar also, if you want to set static dns for all computers in your home, just change dhcp options on your router.

Thanks. but I don't have a router.

3:25 PM
@cl-netbox Yes, back to 90% health. Still need to get better about my sleep and try not to get sick because its cold in Denver
@Anwar what do you have ?

I use a 3G USB modem

@Serg Drink some hot tea - that helps against the cold ! :) By the way ... it's cold here too ! :)

Oh, never used one of those. So yeah, just see my newer answer , that one always works.
@cl-netbox will do :)

:)

@Serg nothing happened :(

3:35 PM
@Anwar Did you reconnect ? How exactly you tested the solution ?

I disconnected and reconnected

Ok. What does nmcli dev show | grep DNS tell you ?

the two dns provided by the ISP
do you need them?

No, not necessary
Show me your /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf file. Did you put ; at the end of line ? iP coma separated ?
@Anwar

Oh. yes. hold a sec
# Configuration file for /sbin/dhclient.
#
# This is a sample configuration file for dhclient. See dhclient.conf's
#	man page for more information about the syntax of this file
#	and a more comprehensive list of the parameters understood by
#	dhclient.
#
# Normally, if the DHCP server provides reasonable information and does
#	not leave anything out (like the domain name, for example), then
#	few changes must be made to this file, if any.

3:52 PM
@Seth not fond of reddit, but my kudu is awesome, haven't had a problem with it
plus tried to buy the m3800 from dell that they were advertising with ubuntu before buying from system76 - and dell really has the worst service ever

Anyone here using a Beaglebone Black?
Or using WordPress on Ubuntu?

4:30 PM
what's the problem with wordpress

can anyone link some reading material on what happens to the X server when switching to a different virtual terminal?
I'm looking for information on if the GUI is suspended, continues running as if it were "minimized", ect

4:53 PM
People just want to pass knowledge. They don't even mind if it is irrelevant link

5:06 PM
@root i answered something like this a while back. GUI is not suspended, its just the virtual terminals are given control over stdin and stdout
@Anwar sorry for delay, i was in class. Your file looks OK. Not quite sure what exactly is the issue. I would suggest posting question about it.

@Zanna I found a LP player a little less expensive for my father! I'm not trying to figure out if his LPs would work on it, turns out there are different rotations for a LP (33rpm, 45rpm and 78rpm), and this one only plays 33rpm

@Serg Don't worry. It's not urgent. Thanks. I'll think about it if I don't find any clue

it looks like 33rpm is the most common, and most likely what he has, but for the money I'll have to pay for it I better be sure :p @Zanna

@IanC yeah it will be really a pain if he can't play all his precious vinyl right?

would be really awkward haha
well, I'm almost sure it would work, but I'm asking my mom if she can find one of his LPs to check if it says something

5:16 PM
@IanC Are all his LPs the same size?

@terdon I don't think so, and some of them are supposed to be played in different speeds
like, those old Jukeboxes usually play 45rpm from what I read
there are 78rpm that were used for recording a single song

Yes. That's why I asked if they're the same size. If they were, you could have assumed your father only had 33s.

oh, you meant my fathers LPs?
I think they are all the same size

Check. That way you know if he needs the different speeds.
Although, it does seem a shame to buy a player that can't play the others.
78 you can almost certainly ignore, but 33s were quite common in the 50s and 60s for singles.

I think here in Brazil the 45rpms didn't really spread, I'm making some research

well, I'll go out have some lunch or buy some groceries
maybe I'll have an idea on how to find out about those LPs without burning the surprise @Zanna @terdon :p
see you all later!

@IanC boa sorte!

@Serg when I'm playing a first-person game, make my character jump in the air, and switch to another virtual terminal, when I switch back my character is still in the air and begins to fall
it seems as though the game is suspended (there is no pause)

5:39 PM
@root thats interesting observation. i will have to make a bit of research then. Things like downloading files dont get stopped for me, i.e., browser doesnt seem to be suspended. I dont recall what it does with youtube videos. Perhaps try that. As far as i recall, they continue playing one i log into tty

hmm ok. if you come across any informational links, send them my way
I'll test with youtube in a few hours

@ThomasWard are you around?
@terdon Thomas Ward previously mentioned that explicit write in chat rooms could only be enabled by a moderator.
I am not a moderator, but I can enable the explicit write in my own room!
Is this a bug, possibly related to my Meta question here

@MarkYisri For whom?

A user already on chat

Not a bug. Neither is your meta post.
Chat rep is network-wide rep.
That's why I have >200K
a

5:45 PM
@terdon Okay, thanks for the clarification.

I only have 40k or so here.

T.T i only have like 36k here

As fro explicit write, sure you as room owner can give it to anyone who can already chat (has >20 rep system-wide). It takes a mod to give explicit write access to a user who doesn't have the minimum rep required to chat.

@terdon only ! hahaha ... good evening terdon ! :)

o/

5:46 PM
@terdon I see, thanks for the clarification!

@cl-netbox Well, only compared to 202k!
@MarkYisri You're welcome.

@terdon 200 is well deserved in your case ! :)

Much of it is silly +100 from creating accounts on various sites.
I only have a serious presence in U&L, AU, SU, ELU, Biology and, to a lesser extent SO and SFF.

I need to spend more time on U&L. i only got 1.8k there

@Serg Most of your answers on AU would be suitable there, because a whole bunch of questions on AU would be better asked on U&L - right @terdon ? :)

5:55 PM
better? No. Just as good, sure.

Which was created first?

U&L

So then why did they make Ask Ubuntu in the first place?
Because the Ubuntu team wanted it?

Because community requested it on Area51
And there was not much opposition to it, so yeah . . .

@terdon Well so many questions and answers are not ubuntu specific, they not even include the word ubuntu ... so that's why I said it. :)

5:57 PM
There is very, very little that is specific to Ubuntu.

At lesst thats what i know from reading a couple Jeff Atwood blogs. I was not there when AU was created

@terdon Exactly ! This is what I meant ... :)

That might be similar to super User and this new Ask Microsoft proposal that's being made. But it looks like it isn't going to run.

some questions about Launchpad, U1 and PPA making might be specific to Ask Ubuntu

Yeah. Canonical services and any changes in Ubuntu's kernel and that's about it, I think.

5:58 PM
I came on board to AU 2 years ago. I was poking around Ubuntu for like 4 months or more, then registered to answer a question about USB

and not to forget the Unity config questions, but lately they are also shipped in other distros I think.

@jokerdino It's always been installable on other distros.

@MarkYisri Isn't superuser about MS Windows ? So another one would be a dupe - right ? Or did I misunderstand ? :) Good evening Mark ! :)

yeah, I remember when there were people using Unity tweak tool in Arch.

That's in keeping with the famous UNIX philosophy axiom:
> It is not UNIX’s job to stop you from shooting your foot. If you so choose to do so [sic], then it is UNIX’s job to deliver Mr. Bullet to Mr Foot in the most efficient way it knows.
11

6:00 PM
@cl-netbox Good evening! (although it's 1 pm where I am (EST))

It's It is not Linux’s job to stop you from shooting your foot installing Unity. If you choose to do so, then it is Linux's job to deliver Mz. Unity to Mr Foot in the most efficient way it knows.

@MarkYisri so then good afternoon Mark ! :)

@terdon a bit outdated philosophy imho

@jokerdino What should this be good for ? UTT in arch ... hmmm ... Hi @jokerdino ! :)

@terdon so true, and thats why I love Linux. No hand holding, questions asked if your sure to be sure to be sure about an action you want to perform, you give the command and th action is performed

6:02 PM
@cl-netbox we had a userbase of 1 in arch haha. From about 7 using Unity.

@Serg Not in mine. That's one of the main things I always liked about Linux and the main thing that pushed me away from Ubuntu: too much hiding of system internals to protect users from themselves. It's great for newbies but can be annoying for more experienced users.

@jokerdino hahaha ! :D :D :D
Heya @Videonauth ! :) Good evening ! :)

@cl-netbox hello, hows your day ?

@cl-netbox I think that it could be argued that Super User contains those questions because there was no Ask Microsoft.

@Videonauth okay so far - what about yours ? :)

6:04 PM
Although there was no Ask Ubuntu when Unix and Linux was created.
@cl-netbox @Videonauth I'm sick.

@cl-netbox No. SU is about computers, it's OS agnostic. You can ask Windows, OSX, MINIX, UNIX, LINUX, anything.

@MarkYisri Oh ... what do you have Mark ?

@cl-netbox flu

@terdon Experienced users will find ways, Ubuntu or not. And its not about hand holding, its about making system work, without breaking and spending hours recovering

what does cl-netbox stand for anyway? :)

6:05 PM
cl stands for his initials :p

@MarkYisri hmmm ... not very nice ... I wish you all the best to get rid of it soon ! :)

\o

That is why docker, lxd, and snaps exist - easy recovery and security

greetings to the diskworld @Rinzwind

greetings accepted and returning them!

6:06 PM
share them!

greetings to the rinzy-world @Rinzwind ! :)

boxy! \o

rinse it

hahaha

@Rinzwind forget greetings, share some of your sushi :p

6:07 PM
god, its sad that terry pratchet died

@jokerdino watch it or we are going dino hunting

@Serg Yep. And if Ubuntu (or any other distro) actually managed to completely eradicate the need to spend hours recovering, I would switch to that distro immediately. Sadly, no distro can do so and I've found that they sometimes make my life harder and not easier. This is a very personal choice of course.
Also, and surprisingly, I've spent far, far less time fixing my Arch system than I used to have to spend fixing my Debian derivative (be that Ubuntu, Mint or Mint Debian) systems.
Largely because Arch never has dependency hell.

It's also obvious that more hacker-oriented distributions like Linux seem to have harder recovery than user-oriented software like Windows/Mac.

and if arch not suffices it you still can go Gentoo

@terdon Is that really true ? I nearly never have to fix something in my ubuntu or fedora ... maybe because I always perform clean installs and plan the installation steps before. :)

6:10 PM
what i learned in the past 10 months since i switched to linux is, the more you have to do to install software on your machine the more youre going to think about if you need that software
the easier it gets to install something the easier it is as well to screw up

WOW, the first posts review queue has 31 questions! I'll try to sort through them now.

@Videonauth Well, apt-get install foo is by far the easiest way I know of to install software. I've found it's easier to install stuff in Linux, not harder. Well, not back when I had to compile 90% of all software I used but certainly since the repos got better.

@Videonauth correct ! so a good advice is to only install things you really need ! :)

@cl-netbox I've had to. Very, very often. But I'm talking about >15 years using Linux, so it adds up.

im running arch now on my laptop because i found ubuntu (even kubuntu and lubuntu) where to heavy weight on that poor old machine
and acrually im building an LFS
or better to say my 6th LFS

6:14 PM
@terdon next year will be my 10th anniversary of using ubuntu ! :) my first edition was gutsy ! :)

Yay!
Oh, hang on. In that case, I've been using Linux for longer than 15 years. I still think of Ubuntu as new :)
OK, yes, 18 years.

@cl-netbox newbie!

WOW @terdon ! :)

hehe what am I then if Boxxy is a newbie :p

1998

6:16 PM
I have Ubuntu 5.04 and 5.10 CDs in the cupboard :D

@Rinzwind yes ... NEWBIE ... completely new ! hahaha ! :D
@Videonauth a baby maybe ??? :D :D :D

@cl-netbox well then :p

@terdon cool! I started working in 1992 using TOS (thoroughbred operating system. a BASIC interpreter), then Xenix, then Unix and AIX and then Ubuntu)
Oh and SCO was the Unix.

Somebody fix the formatting on this:

Q: mysql-server : Depends: mysqlUnmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution)

Sahajayogi Venkateswarlu hi i am new ubuntu oprating system i face problem when each installing application on terminal when enter sudo apt-get install <app name> it will shows you like this dell@dell-Inspiron-3558:~$ sudo apt-get install git[sudo] password for dell: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency ...

on it

6:18 PM
@Rinzwind WOW ... now I know why you and @terdon are having such a big general knowledge ! :)

done

@Rinzwind Heh, I was 12 in '92. I started in 98, first year of university when a friend installed Mandrake on my machine for me.

@cl-netbox I often end up typing an answer and then realize it is a Unix answer :D
oh Mandrak! used that a few weeks too

Gnah RInzy :p

You know you're an old Linux user when the distro you started with doesn't even exist anymore.

6:19 PM
This post has been edited 1 time since you began. Your edit can only be saved if it is more thorough than the currently saved edit.

and Madriva :D

mandriva's still around isn't it?
Or did that die too?

what was that other os :P

@rinzwind thanks, you just missed a newline which I edited in.

dunno
mandrive went backrupt in 2015 @terdon

6:20 PM
I went Mandrake -> SuSe -> openSuSe -> ( RedHat -> Fedora at work) -> Ubuntu -> Mint -> LMDE -> Arch.
@Rinzwind Great. So not only is my first distro dead, I've also outlived its child.

suse .. 4.6 I think it was. when I saw the installation I quit and threw it away

Anybody here likes CentOS ?

you had to MANUALLY pick what to install. Inclusing LIBS

Heh. I would buy it. It came with a booklet of 5-6 installation CDs.

and damned if you missed one

6:21 PM
@Serg me ! :) stable as hell ! :)

have it at work. a couple of clients of mine use it.
Nothign wrong with it :)

:D @cl-netbox

@cl-netbox Stable as in not even working?

@cl-netbox hell aint stable. it is firey :=)

@Videonauth as stable as hell is hot ! :D

6:23 PM
@Rinzwind yep, i like the fact that it's pretty stable, regardless if it doesn't have all the newest software. Gnome Flashback is meh, but there's always other options. the only quirk is that Ethernet was disabled by default

@Rinzwind :(

@Videonauth Quite the opposite actually ! Works quite well

@Serg Yes exactly ! :)

Ubuntu should go for rolling releases between LTS :P :P
More up to date is more fun

You guys have any idea how i can deliver a payload to a guy who annoys the hec k out of me with trying to bruteforce into my WP instalation?

6:25 PM
@Serg On CentOS?! Seriously?
Does anyone even use that on anything but ethernet?

@Rinzwind that's why I use fedora and ubuntu as main systems ... :)

That's a 100% "professional" distribution, I don't think anyone (or certainly not many) would install it on a laptop.

@cl-netbox none of my clients use fedora. we got 1 using SCO 7 ( :X ) 3 with CentOS and all the others are Ubuntu

@terdon me ... in a VM on my notebook for support cases ! :)

@Rinzwind You mean doing more than just the two times a year thing?

6:26 PM
@cl-netbox Well yes, but not as your main OS.

@terdon no - sure not :)

So, this person posts a question here

Q: mysql-server : Depends: mysql. Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution)

Sahajayogi Venkateswarlu I am new to the Ubuntu operating system and I face a problem with installing applications on terminal. @MarkYisri you get an LTS and that will get regular updates of software and at some point you are on a none lts release. no installing in between lts You just 'roll' into it

And then doesn't try sudo apt-get -f install first. By the looks of it

@MarkYisri nobody ever does

6:28 PM
@MarkYisri well who if us ever reads what thos pesky computers output :p

@Rinzwind @Videonauth I always tried it. Although I haven't asked a single question on AU since I joined in September.

In fact there are many questions here which fall into the RTFM category
and i guess not on au alone

@Videonauth many ? hahaha way more than many ! :D

whether sudo apt-get -f install works is kind of a crapshoot
it has failed me before

6:29 PM
Like I said before: "man" page questions are always good for 10 upvotes in the answer.

true it not always works

I have to wait 5 hours !!

@MarkYisri well done, I can never get through 20 these days... (or rather, I can get through 50 in edit&&skip mode and still not make 20 in the stats)

anyone have a contact email for Canonical. See this question:

Q: Is there a project to motivate schools to use Ubuntu?

miharixIs there any global or EU project for motivating schools to use Ubuntu and Linux in general? can I have some approved edits here:

@MarkYisri here is one from me ! :)
@MarkYisri aaand ... another one ! :)

@cl-netbox thanks! :)

@MarkYisri You're welcome ! :)

Ahem... definition of "tomorrow" is never over in this discussion room:

@MarkYisri approved couple edits, but the one with Debian Jessie was kind of pointless - wasn't really improvement

6:45 PM
@chili555 - Here's a Q that has to do with hard blocking: askubuntu.com/questions/855446/…
@MarkYisri Here's one from me too :)
"and after being punished for a while" - Ummmm.... was that supposed to be "published"? — Android Dev 28 secs ago

Goodbye all - see you tomorrow ! :)

7:13 PM
@MarkYisri You misunderstood then - it's able to be done by a room owner. It also is network-wide chat access - if they have three accounts with a combined of 250 they have chat access.
not a bug
but i may have misspoke or such.
If you're not room owner, you can't give write access
moderators can though

Ah theres the man i have been waiting for :)
Thomas, I have one peskyy user trying to brute his way into my wp-login.php. Any idea how i can deliver him a payload somehow to fetch his actual true IP? I mean this guy is clever thou, always comes up with a new proxy IP

eh?
oh

I've already banned around 2000 IP adresses only from his attacks

@Videonauth There's no way to send that kind of payload - it's also probably not the one user - i would suggest installing some type of bruteforce protection plugin
make sure you also disable XMLRPC access
at the webserver. unless you need it

already done

7:23 PM
sigh . . . i don't know what to do, go to that damn lecture or not

xmlrpc ??? ah you mean that file i deleted straight away :p
well wahat have i done so far, rewrite rules for the most common attacks and injection methods, using reCAPTCHA on everything, removed xmlrpc, having a secutirty plugin on top
I wonder if there is a way to log the POST he does with every try

@Videonauth not sure. I would still get an anti-bruteforcer plugin that will ban IPs after a specific number of failures for a specified period of time
there's a lot of them

have that too
banning for 356*24*60 minutes after 5 trys

356?

a whole year

7:36 PM
you need to go relearn math then
there's 365 days in a year
not 356
and what happens after you fail 5 times lol

erm typo

blurgh i need to do this art history paper and I don't want to

well i can ssh into the machine (only local) and kick me of that list
no ssh to the outside world

7:53 PM
A comment posted to an article on Linode's blog:
> "The Internet is the fastest country in korea"
I have no clue what that is supposed to mean.

well i only can assume tho. maybe that the censoring is even quicker as north koreas
Anyone here firm with mod_rewirte on apache2?

I haven't used it in a few years.

well im actually trying to crate a rewrite for port 80 HTTP since i dont server plain http requests
but something i do wrong here i think

Ah, so basically a forced HTTPS upgrade?

well kinda i display a 505

8:08 PM
You might want to check this page: wiki.apache.org/httpd/RewriteHTTPToHTTPS
Other than that, sorry, I don't really know enough to help.

can someone try what they see on that ? videonauth.dyndns.org and second link this one videonauth.dyndns.org/wp-login.php

8:25 PM
We don't serve http requests!
@Videonauth

on both ?

Yep, identical

good then i can assume it works as intended

Nice @Videonauth :)

yes i was before simply rewriting the landing page into https, but found out that my attacker uses this to slip in some POSt data to brute force on my WP login page
so now im throwing the request away and display this page
I love it when a question is so clear and short like this ... :/ askubuntu.com/q/855479/522934

I can't complain about summer, though , it was one of the best times I've had in long time. My first trip to China

I don't know about going to China.

@TheXed trust me, it's a great place. Great Wall is far more impressive than on the pictures

I should go there and take my drone.
After all, it was probably manufactured there :D

Food is great, people are quite nice. Sure, there's pickpocketers and scammers, but . . . there's plenty of that in the US,too.

Should I even show up for final ? I mean I am 100% fupped , so . . . I kind of lost the point of coming to class at all
