what is it?

A programming language.

@MartinEnder Oooh.. one the them is mine :)

@trichoplax I didn't even realise Manhattan had a bounty - nobody else answered? D:

@Lembik Someone needs to set a bounty on that ;)

@Kade :)

@betseg I was this close to ignoring your request on steam, lol

;_;

I get tons of crappy invites so I usually ignore them all, you pretty much got lucky that I checked your profile :P
and when I say crappy invites, I mean it: imagebin.ca/v/33Xov70XR3F5 (turkish kinda nsfw text)

2:34 PM
@arda is my name on steam nice? :P

I really appreciated this video from Vi Hart about what happened in the 2016 election and about politics in general: A Mathematician's Perspective on the Divide. The main idea that Republican/Democrat votes were mainly determined by age seems to be applicable to other situations, like Brexit, so this video should be worth watching by non-Americans too.
(Or, if you're Dennis, s/non-Americans/people who don't live in the USA/. :P)

Hey, I just realized I can golf four bytes off an old answer of mine

Q: Should a program be allowed to run out of memory?

SoniEx2Should programs that may run out of memory be allowed? For example, when validating data to see if it's a valid PNG file or not, as per this challenge.

3:07 PM
@betseg It is

tfw map doesn't have an alias for the array it's operating on, just the current variable

@mınxomaτ just watched the whole thing. that was really good, thanks :)

@Downgoat I can justify that. I nearly lost all my code because git is stupid sometimes.

@GabrielBenamy that would kinda break the scope of the usual map semantics, wouldn't it? ;)
depending on what language you're working with, a map can often start processing a "list" before the entire list is known, which would no longer be the case if it always had access to it.
(and also depending on what language you're working with, there's likely a way to bring the list into scope anyway)

Well, I can defined the list as @a = 1..1e6 inside the map statement, so I don't see why I can't drop the @a= and use, say, @_ inside map
It would save me 3 bytes for one of my answers, which is all I really care about :P

3:16 PM
@GabrielBenamy I don't see what you mean.. care to show an example? (maybe the answer you're mentioning?)

I came up with another solution to the cantor problem, same byte count:
map{say$_=$_%7*!/7/?$_:$a[$b++]}@a=1..1e6
If map used @_ as an alias for the list it operates on (not necessarily the list it returns), then I wouldn't need to declare @a, and I could just access the $b-th element directly from @_

Oh I see... indeed, it might be convenient some times! (but as mentioned Martin Ender, that would be a weird semantic for a map)

@Dada Even though, since $_ is an alias for the element inside @a, that modifying $_ actually modifies @a?

probably not, side effects would (s/// for instance), but an assignment doesn't (if I'm not mistaken)
nvm, it actually modifies @a... that's unexpected
nvm, not unexpected, just me forgetting about some basic rules of Perl I think

I think foreach does the same thing

3:26 PM
yes you're right

Holy crap. Just got overwatch, it's ridiculously fun.
Does anyone else here play it?

I have, I suck.

@DJMcMayhem I would if I had the equipment (and therefore, money).

is it possible to do a named link in the room description?

FPS's aren't really my thing though, I got it cause a lot of people i know got it but they play way more than I do.

3:32 PM
@NathanMerrill IIRC nope.

I tried to do [Name](link) but it didn't work

Overwatch is too casual for my taste

hm ok

@Yodle Yeah, I got it for similar reasons. I do really like it though

@El'endiaStarman there was a very poignant comment on that video I agree with. While much of her statistics were accurate, and she realized that there are smart people on both sides, she still made the point that "old people are often less educated (due to growing standards of education and less technology in their lives), which is why the republicans won", which is in effect saying that "if you were smarter, you'd vote for Hillary"

3:35 PM
@DJMcMayhem Yeah I tend to prefer RTS/MOBAs. I have a hard time seeing people in first person shooters so I just die before I can even fight back.

@DJMcMayhem I want to, but monies

@NathanMerrill Huh, when I scrolled down, I didn't see any comments. o.O
But anyway, that's a good/interesting point.
Properly speaking though, intelligence != education.

@Fatalize What do you mean by too casual? There is a pretty competitive scene if that's what you prefer.

@El'endiaStarman true, but the implication is still there, otherwise, why discuss the education level of older people

Q: C Programming Project

DenaroGood Morning, I need some help with my final project in programming in C. As we lightly covered floaters and arrays in class on a white board I'm having some issues putting markers to studio. "Your program should read floating point values from the input, up to (and including) 100 values. You sho...

3:39 PM
@Emigna There is also a competitive scene in say Heroes of the storm, doesn't change the fact that it is way more casual than other similar games

What's your definition of casual?

anyways, I'm out. I need to get work done

@Yodle really? I can't stand mobas. They drive me crazy. I really want to like LoL, but I just can't

Dota 2 masterrace

@DJMcMayhem Well I started out with Warcraft 3, which more or less was where mobas started (technically Starcraft, but DotA was much bigger). So when LoL came out, I kinda just stuck with it when a bunch of friends of mine started as well.

3:43 PM
@Emigna The less casual a game is, the more a good player can roll over an okay player

So casual is more balanced towards noobs?

There are games where a player being slightly better than another (on the entire scale from beginner to pro) will be extremely visible overall in the game
Whereas in Overwatch if you are slightly better than another player the difference is barely noticeable in a game usually

A good team pretty easily rolls over an okay team I'd say though

Games are more casual the more players play it to have fun. Games are more competitive the more players play it to win

Quick play is definitely pretty casual. Competitive isn't imo.

3:46 PM
@Emigna But in e.g. CS a good team easily rolls over a slightly less good team

there are tons of people in Dota 2 that play it to win and hate the game

@NathanMerrill Well, this is kind of why different queues exist in a lot of these games. An unranked, casual queue for having fun; versus a competitive ranked queue for winning.

Mostly because all the best players avoid quick play

@NathanMerrill Hmm. There might be some conflation here between Republican/Democrat and Trump/Hilary. I would certainly expect that citizens who received more education and who have used the internet more would be more cognizant of people beyond their social community and their lives and struggles. I would also expect such people who have more of a global awareness to be solidly against Trump and the principles he espoused. Therefore, education and technology indirectly lead to voting against Trump.

@Fatalize Same in Overwatch
Even among the top teams, a slightly better one often beats a slightly worse team by a lot

3:47 PM
@El'endiaStarman you could make that same argument for Hillary, though. There was a lot of dirt on both. (FYI, I didn't vote for either, in case that matters)
Hilary*

Take e.g. League of Legends VS Dota, since you cannot kill your own creeps in LoL, the only edge a player gains by being immensely better at last hitting than his opponent is that he will miss less last hits

@Fatalize anyways, in case this makes you hate me, I'm a techies player :)

whereas in Dota in addition to missing less last hits he will also deny his opponent last hits, which is doubly worse
@NathanMerrill I'm a Pudge player so we are both cancer

I don't think the amount of "skill-based" play really makes for a competitive game. If Dota was filled with people that just wanted to goof around, even in its current patch state, it'd still be a casual game
Whether or not a game is casual or competitive depends on the players

It is filled with people that want to goof around; though I don't think they do it on purpose.

3:50 PM
@NathanMerrill No question that neither was good. Hilary wasn't so blatant about it though. She didn't advocate for a Muslim registry or mass deportations. One thing I hate about Trump's victory is that the voices of those who hate other humans based on race, creed, etc are emboldened because a prominent, powerful figure did so and got away with it.

@NathanMerrill (What MMR are you at?)

@Fatalize I only play unranked
no idea

filthy casual

Now I'm curious. Would you consider rocket league casual or competitive?

3:52 PM
@NathanMerrill In the professional scene in League this is a huge deal. Teams from Korea practice basically all hours of the day that they're awake, versus teams from North America where only one-two are even close to working that hard. It really shows in international tournaments: Korean teams have basically won all of them the last few years.

Though it is sometimes better for your sanity

Active shooter reported on Ohio State University campus: cnn.com/2016/11/28/us/ohio-state-university-active-shooter

@El'endiaStarman I'm not really wanting to debate the candidates. However, there are definitely educated people on both sides that believe that the other candidate is worse. I just think that its not really accurate to make the comparison that education is correlated with voting for a particular candidate

@NathanMerrill Yeah, this election cycle was just really messy. Hopefully we'll get clearer data in future elections. :P

yeah
I really wonder though if this next election, if a candidate's major platform was "I am going to change how elections work", if that would work
given the amount of (unprecedented) hate going both ways

3:58 PM
@NathanMerrill Bernie Sanders tried, but faced a LOT of opposition from Clinton

they'd really have to fight the current set of gov. officials, but with enough advertising, it may work

@NathanMerrill Would probably get a lot of young people to vote for them.

Another interesting to see will be whether the candidates are extreme or moderate.

@GabrielBenamy I don't remember him saying that he wanted to change how elections worked. Even if that was one of his policies, it wasn't that prominent (unless I completely missed it)

@NathanMerrill Well, he wanted to start by changing how campaigns were funded, but I do believe his plan extended to making voting in general more widely available. I don't know if he explicitly wanted to, say, do away with the electoral college, but we'll never know I guess.

4:02 PM
hmmm, looking at his webpage, I see that he was proposing changing how money works in elections
yeah

@Fatalize Wait, you can't deny in LoL?

Well that's kind of dumb.

You deny your opponents in different ways in LoL.
It's more about macro play nowadays.
An individual player can't carry as easily, the whole team has to be on point.

4:36 PM
@El'endiaStarman @DJMcMayhem htf are you supposed to quit antichamber, and what is that timer trying to tell me
the timer is that 1.5h timer on the wall of the main room, counting down

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ You've only got that long until it runs out.
I'm not going to spoil what happens when it does.

@El'endiaStarman hm, okay
am I supposed to complete the game in 1 sitting then?
there is no quit button

its clearly the winning timer
sit around for the next 1.5 hours

Hmm. I don't remember how I managed to exit the game the first time. Probably just closed it directly?

4:42 PM
yeah, cmd-q (mac, quits the application directly, generally equivalent to hitting the exit button) works for me
just wanted to make sure you weren't supposed to do it all in 1 sitting
@El'endiaStarman if the timer runs out, is the game over and you have to try to beat the game in under 1:30 again?
if not, don't say anything but I want to know that :p

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'm not answering that question either affirmatively or negatively. :P

lol okay
i'll try to do it later today then, and complete it all in 1 sitting
@El'endiaStarman one final question: is the whole game completable in 1:30?

Alright. Good luck! :P

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yes.

4:45 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I have beaten the game in 10 minutes

Also, I believe <esc> returns you to the starting menu

yes
but how to exit the game from there

Oh. No Idea

there is no exit button, the door labeled exit is blocked off by a glass-like wall
@DJMcMayhem lol
thanks for the advice guys!

4:46 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ You'll see what that's for... :)

damnit, now I really want to play the game now, but I have to work on christmas presents :(

I think the first time beating it took around 8 hours (not in one sitting obviously)

oh, so it doesn't end the game
cool
wait nvm
it might, can't deduce from there :/

@DJMcMayhem Aw c'mon, I didn't want to spoil that.

aha! so it doesn't end the game

4:52 PM
Does that really count as a spoiler?

@El'endiaStarman if you hadn't said that, you probably would have left it open to whether the timer ends the game

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ not necessarily.

because he could have had to restart twice, finally to complete it in 1h

The longer you play it, the faster you get

4:53 PM
@DJMcMayhem I think so. The point of the timer is to make you freak out.

great, now the discussion of the game is confusing me as much as the game >.<

Because you have no idea what it does.

I didn't say anything about the timer though
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ What if that's our whole goal? :P

I'm thinking it is el'endias, but idk you yet :p

@El'endiaStarman My favorite part of the game is where it turns out you were in Rick astley's head the entire time

But the space plot-twist was kinda weird

Hmm. How surprising that two different people have two different perspectives on the game... :P

@DJMcMayhem you mean the part where a plane crashed and some dude speaking swiss started recording it?

Something like that

@DJMcMayhem Oh, so you're saying it took you multiple tries to get below 1.5 hours?

4:56 PM
>_< stahppp
:P

Lol

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Do you rue the day you decided to give me lemons ask questions about Antichamber? :P

I think I've beaten antichamber 5-6 times.
And I let my younger brother and sister play it, so I have 100 hours on record, haha

lol
how old are they?
my sister is my twin, brother is like 10

@flawr Please tell me this money is going to charity

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ A mystery.
Just beat the game already.

@quartata did you even read it
> Why aren’t you giving all this money to charity?
Why aren’t YOU giving all this money to charity? It’s your money.

No I was just too horrified by the entire concept
so people are literally throwing away their money just so they can watch someone dig a hole

@quartata It's not like the money isn't going anywhere -- the people working the bulldozers are, in fact, getting paid for their time

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Rick Astley's psyche.

5:44 PM
ooh cool

I thought I already explained this

holy shit this game is so cool
oh, those weird digging noises werent the game
they were the hole in the background

@GabrielBenamy The diggers are probably rented. You can also see some backup vehicles in the background. Plus the land was apparently purchased just for this. So yeah, not much profit on that for CAH.

but hey, brand new hole!

I have a complicated email situation for you guys:
1) A third party tester emails me about an issue
2) I respond that I am investigating the issue and he will hear back from me in the afternoon
3) That guy's boss, who also happens to be our customer, removes everyone else from the email and emails only me, and made a point to say "Removing other <my side> folks."
Meanwhile, I finished investigating and I have a response. What do I do now? Do I just add the guy back because I promised him a response?

5:59 PM
I'd say email him separately (the guy who was removed) saying something like "I found the fix, and emailed your boss so-and-so about it", and email the boss the fix.
that's just my opinion as a teenager with no work experience however.

@TuxCopter it already exists and is called COW

@mınxomaτ Is that where the term pointers come from? You have to actually physically point at the registers on the CPU in order to get them to do things while making grunt and ugh noises.

@Yodle Yes. Louder grunts make the CPU go faster. Everyone knows that.

@Yodle This chart is wrong, so the chart is right that it is wrong. But, it is wrong, so it can't be wrong, so it must be right. But, how can it be right if it is wrong? It is wrong! Wrong as hell! So, if it is wrong that it is wrong, then it is right...

@Geobits I google'd "this chart is wrong" to try to find one since I'm too lazy to create it myself, and got political results for Obamacare and Planned Parenthood.

@Yodle LOL I google it too and got results about Body Mass WTF really?

@TuxCopter I like the collapsing of the Y axis in that, makes "another chart" look so much better than the first two despite being 90% wrong.
@ErikGolferエリックゴルファー Yeah Idunno what Google's trying to do with those results.

@Dennis: I'm a bit confused at your request that a task in a problem shouldn't require anything that looks like a non-default I/O method because it looks like a default override; the task of overwriting a file in-place is nontrivial in many languages, isn't legal as an I/O method, and would be suboptimal in basically every language!

Do we have a challenge about "incrementing" an array? Like adding one to the smallest element until the max is reached, then adding a new element.

but this is likely to lead to extended discussion so I decided to take it to chat rather than the comments.
@Calvin'sHobbies: smallest element, or last element?

@Calvin'sHobbies What do you mean by "adding a new element"?
No, I don't think we do have such a challenge yet.

who wants a logic puzzle

7:20 PM
@ais523 The smallest, if there are multiple minima increment one with lower index. Like [1, 2, 3] -> [2, 2, 3] -> [3, 2, 3] -> [3, 3, 3] -> [3, 3, 3, 1] -> ...

Wow that's a lot of infinite looping.

@Calvin'sHobbies oh, I thought you meant the sort of sequence generated by perl -E '$_="a";say$_++while 1', that's pretty similar to incrementing (and in fact it's how Perl defines ++ on an alphabetical string, even though this is inconsistent with the normal meaning of ++)
also I guess there wasn't much of a need to golf that example, I just did it out of habit

Can someone check my algorithm here is correct? I might have missed something...

It seems correct to me?

@ais523 I just don't think editing the file in place makes the challenge (which seems to be about line endings) more interesting, so it (imho) automatically excludes a huge set of languages for no benefit. That's my personal opinion anf I wanted to explain my downvote. It's not a request, just feedback.

7:35 PM
Ah, from my point of view, I think "replace string A with string B and vice versa" challenges are almost a duplicate at this point without some twist to make them more interesting; admittedly including newlines in the string screws up a bunch of languages which would otherwise be very good at them. Thanks for your feedback, though.

Well, if your base idea is a borderline dupe and otherwise not interesting, adding a seemingly arbitrary and exceptionally exclusive requirement doesn't really make it any better, does it? I think this is a bad idea in general, not just for this.

the point is that the result forms an actual practical program that I often get frustrated at having to write or install on new systems (which makes the challenge more interesting in its own right), and also makes you think about a dimension that you don't normally have to think about
and I was surprised it hadn't been done already
there's a big preference on this site (and on most golfing sites, for that matter) towards small problems
so having a well-known small problem like this that adds a new dimension to the normal "formulaic" golfing you do is worthwhile

How does "who wants a logic puzzle" go without response for over 20 minutes in a room like this? You folks are usually hungry for puzzles.
@GabrielBenamy I do!

also might inspire people to use different languages from normal; I'm expecting a bash+vim answer from someone at some point

+1 points for you.
The first answer is "North Pole". However, there is more than one location on the surface of the Earth where such a path is possible. Where else could I be?

south pole maybe

7:44 PM
You can't go south at the south pole

when you're on the south pole, every direction is north

you can't go east at the south pole

We've seen this before Musk

however, there are infinitely many answers to the problem, and it's one I've seen before

@GabrielBenamy 100 miles anywhere from South pole

7:45 PM
brb my backspace key is borked

@Calvin'sHobbies When you go south 100 miles, you end up at the south pole, and then can't go east at all

So you don't go east, You go north back to where you started

But you must go east before you go north

then idk

There are an infinite number of solutions to that problem. (I know this because I've seen it at least twice before. :P)

7:51 PM
Approximately 16 miles north of the South Pole, there exists a very small latitude whose length around the Earth is exactly 100 miles.

@GabrielBenamy Ah. Start 100 miles north of a circle whose circumference is 100 miles

If you were to begin at any point exactly 100 miles north of this latitude, you would travel south 100 miles to this ring, east 100 miles making a complete revolution around the planet, and then north 100 miles, returning you exactly where you began.

Er, yeah, what you said :p

How about another place?

There's also the latitude whose length is 50 miles, so you'd make two trips around the South Pole.

7:53 PM
yep
There are an infinite number of such rings
whose length is 100/[some integer] miles

Q: Increment an Array

For example: [1] -> [1, 1] [2] -> [2, 1] [1, 1] -> [1, 1, 1] [3, 3, 3, 3, 3] -> [3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 1] Else, increment the first element in the arr...

fun fact: beginning at the equator, if you travel north at exactly a 45-degree angle to the equator, you will reach the north pole in finite distance, but you will make an infinite number of revolutions around the north pole.
