I really appreciated this video from Vi Hart about what happened in the 2016 election and about politics in general: A Mathematician's Perspective on the Divide. The main idea that Republican/Democrat votes were mainly determined by age seems to be applicable to other situations, like Brexit, so this video should be worth watching by non-Americans too.
(Or, if you're Dennis, s/non-Americans/people who don't live in the USA/. :P)
Should programs that may run out of memory be allowed? For example, when validating data to see if it's a valid PNG file or not, as per this challenge.

depending on what language you're working with, a map can often start processing a "list" before the entire list is known, which would no longer be the case if it always had access to it.
(and also depending on what language you're working with, there's likely a way to bring the list into scope anyway)
I came up with another solution to the cantor problem, same byte count: map{say$_=$_%7*!/7/?$_:$a[$b++]}@a=1..1e6
If map used @_ as an alias for the list it operates on (not necessarily the list it returns), then I wouldn't need to declare @a, and I could just access the $b-th element directly from @_

While much of her statistics were accurate, and she realized that there are smart people on both sides, she still made the point that "old people are often less educated (due to growing standards of education and less technology in their lives), which is why the republicans won", which is in effect saying that "if you were smarter, you'd vote for Hillary"

@DJMcMayhem Well I started out with Warcraft 3, which more or less was where mobas started (technically Starcraft, but DotA was much bigger). So when LoL came out, I kinda just stuck with it when a bunch of friends of mine started as well.
There are games where a player being slightly better than another (on the entire scale from beginner to pro) will be extremely visible overall in the game
Whereas in Overwatch if you are slightly better than another player the difference is barely noticeable in a game usually
@NathanMerrill Well, this is kind of why different queues exist in a lot of these games. An unranked, casual queue for having fun; versus a competitive ranked queue for winning.
@NathanMerrill Hmm. There might be some conflation here between Republican/Democrat and Trump/Hilary. I would certainly expect that citizens who received more education and who have used the internet more would be more cognizant of people beyond their social community and their lives and struggles. I would also expect such people who have more of a global awareness to be solidly against Trump and the principles he espoused. Therefore, education and technology indirectly lead to voting against Trump.
@El'endiaStarman you could make that same argument for Hillary, though. There was a lot of dirt on both. (FYI, I didn't vote for either, in case that matters)
Take e.g. League of Legends VS Dota, since you cannot kill your own creeps in LoL, the only edge a player gains by being immensely better at last hitting than his opponent is that he will miss less last hits
I don't think the amount of "skill-based" play really makes for a competitive game. If Dota was filled with people that just wanted to goof around, even in its current patch state, it'd still be a casual game

@NathanMerrill No question that neither was good. Hilary wasn't so blatant about it though. She didn't advocate for a Muslim registry or mass deportations. One thing I hate about Trump's victory is that the voices of those who hate other humans based on race, creed, etc are emboldened because a prominent, powerful figure did so and got away with it.
@NathanMerrill In the professional scene in League this is a huge deal. Teams from Korea practice basically all hours of the day that they're awake, versus teams from North America where only one-two are even close to working that hard. It really shows in international tournaments: Korean teams have basically won all of them the last few years.
@El'endiaStarman I'm not really wanting to debate the candidates. However, there are definitely educated people on both sides that believe that the other candidate is worse. I just think that its not really accurate to make the comparison that education is correlated with voting for a particular candidate
@GabrielBenamy I don't remember him saying that he wanted to change how elections worked. Even if that was one of his policies, it wasn't that prominent (unless I completely missed it)
@NathanMerrill Well, he wanted to start by changing how campaigns were funded, but I do believe his plan extended to making voting in general more widely available. I don't know if he explicitly wanted to, say, do away with the electoral college, but we'll never know I guess.

I have a complicated email situation for you guys: 1) A third party tester emails me about an issue 2) I respond that I am investigating the issue and he will hear back from me in the afternoon 3) That guy's boss, who also happens to be our customer, removes everyone else from the email and emails only me, and made a point to say "Removing other <my side> folks." Meanwhile, I finished investigating and I have a response. What do I do now? Do I just add the guy back because I promised him a response?
I'd say email him separately (the guy who was removed) saying something like "I found the fix, and emailed your boss so-and-so about it", and email the boss the fix.

@Dennis: I'm a bit confused at your request that a task in a problem shouldn't require anything that looks like a non-default I/O method because it looks like a default override; the task of overwriting a file in-place is nontrivial in many languages, isn't legal as an I/O method, and would be suboptimal in basically every language!

@ais523 I just don't think editing the file in place makes the challenge (which seems to be about line endings) more interesting, so it (imho) automatically excludes a huge set of languages for no benefit. That's my personal opinion anf I wanted to explain my downvote. It's not a request, just feedback.
Ah, from my point of view, I think "replace string A with string B and vice versa" challenges are almost a duplicate at this point without some twist to make them more interesting; admittedly including newlines in the string screws up a bunch of languages which would otherwise be very good at them. Thanks for your feedback, though.
Well, if your base idea is a borderline dupe and otherwise not interesting, adding a seemingly arbitrary and exceptionally exclusive requirement doesn't really make it any better, does it? I think this is a bad idea in general, not just for this.
the point is that the result forms an actual practical program that I often get frustrated at having to write or install on new systems (which makes the challenge more interesting in its own right), and also makes you think about a dimension that you don't normally have to think about
and I was surprised it hadn't been done already
there's a big preference on this site (and on most golfing sites, for that matter) towards small problems
so having a well-known small problem like this that adds a new dimension to the normal "formulaic" golfing you do is worthwhile
