Q: How can we promote the site on LinkedIn?

Jeromy AnglimI'm not a big linkedin user, but I have noticed over the while that there are a number of psychology communities on the site. What are the major psychology, and cognitive science communities on Linkedin? What strategies might be effective in promoting the site to these communities?

Q: Promoting the site to psychology and cognitive science majors at university?

Jeromy AnglimBy my back of the envelope estimation, there must be close to a million students studying psychology or cognitive science at any given moment (i.e., 1000 universities each with 1000 students). So far, I have not seen a single question inspired by a university student struggling to understand co...

Q: How to respectfully engage with the online communities?

Jeromy AnglimI really like Reddit and I really like Stack Exchange. Reddit provides a great environment for community building, link sharing, and discussion. It does provide some support for questions and answers; however, it is very different from the aims of Stack Exchange. It's much less structured, and ...

Q: What popular online communities exist that permit sharing links and are relevant to cogsci.se?

Jeromy AnglimI know a bit about Reddit (see discussion on meta here). Key features for this discussion include the ability to post links and the existence of large communities interested in cognitive science, psychology and related areas. However, I realise there is a whole world of social network sites out t...

Q: Why are people inclined to praise or fear the unknown?

ComptrolHuman beings are inclined to "praise" the unknown, and are often afraid of the unknown. This inclination has led to the creation of mythology and many gods. To this date we are still carrying this habit on our daily lives. "Oh, look at these crop circles, aliens must have created them!" "Oh, h...

@JeromyAnglim: What was wrong with 'belief'? I know the 'faith' edit was wrong, but why wouldn't belief be spot on?
Same goes for the tag edit. Would just tag it 'belief'.
Just my two cents ...
I kind of feel guilty for answering the question rather simplistically. The problem often is once there is an answer with an up vote, people don't bother answering anymore, and I'm guessing there is a lot more detailed information about this out there!
I might look more into the subject when I have some spare time to enhance my answer.

1:46 AM
It seemed to me that the OP thought the emphasis on "praise and fear" was important. Some else had changed it to faith. But it's a very long question, so sorry if I've taken it off track. The main change I wanted to make was to ensure that it had some clear questions at the end; as it stood it was a lot of text and it was hard to find the actual question.
But I don't mind, if you think belief would be more appropriate.

@JeromyAnglim It's not off track ... faith made it off track, so it definitely needed to be corrected. And I figured since the OP didn't answer in the comments anymore to the title change that he was OK with it. My problem with praise and fear is it is too specific and makes up a bad question title. At least I interpret the question (especially the ending one) to be belief in general, and not just praise or fear. You can add awe/joy/curiosity/ ... as well following that trend. :)
@JeromyAnglim I definitely find your actual questions at the bottom an improvement. It's just the title I was worried about. (and the magical-thinking tag) :)

yeah, I actually added the magical-thinking tag; perhaps "superstition" would be better or "religion"

Well, belief seems to be understood differently by a lot of people so I agree it might be a bit too ambiguous.
Although the wikipedia article (and other sources I read about) are pretty clear on its definition.
superstition could work, but has a negative tone to it
This question definitely isn't limited to religion, and religion is just one example.

true, true. I guess ultimately with a question like this, definitions become really important.

And thus tags with a properly defined definition can help there.
... but I seem to be correct, actually superstition is just one form of belief.
So for etymologies sake I would stick to 'belief'.

1:56 AM
I guess belief is an attitude towards the truth of a statement, whether it be classified as scientific, religious, or otherwise.

I really love the The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's definition: "Belief is the psychological state in which an individual holds a proposition or premise to be true."

sounds good

I've read some bad reviews on the book in my answer, so I'm afraid it's not really a proper answer. But then again, there might not be an answer out there yet.

I imagine the question could be tackled from a lot of different angles; evolutionary psychology seems like one
I might pop out now have some lunch and then answer a few questions.

@JeromyAnglim Enjoy your meal. I'm off to bed. Cya!

@JeromyAnglim prompting people to provide a definition or suggesting one can be very helpful, sometimes questions about definition can be even better questions:

Q: What is an effective metric of complexity for an Artificial Neural Network?

Ben BrockaAfter asking the question What is the most complex neural network... I realized I don't really have a good metric of "complexity" in a general sense. The simplest measure would likely be count of neurons or number of synapses, but that fails to take into account the structure of the network. A c...

@BenBrocka good point. I think a definition question would be well suited to the faith / belief/ fear question.

so I asked a question which is dangerously close to evolutionary psychology. I specifically asked for formal models that answer the question, and even included two as references of a partial answer (restricted just to the case of language acquisition instead of general learning and neural plasticity). However, the question keep generating comments-as-answers which are inherently non-formal or not addressing the question. What should I do?
am I being too demanding by asking for references to formal models?
should I ask a question on meta about this? or am I worried too much?

10:31 PM
@ArtemKaznatcheev it seems to me like you're doing the best thing you can, namely, commenting and downvoting
@ArtemKaznatcheev asking a question on meta is also a good idea
We're still a young beta, we need a larger userbase
it could be simply that the users we have aren't able to answer your question yet...
But let's see what @JeromyAnglim or @BenBrocka have to say about this, they may have more insight than I
(when they next sign on)

@ArtemKaznatcheev I figured you were asking for evolutionary psychology based answers
It's not entirely clear that you're asking for formal models explicitly though; it's only mentioned in your note toward, but not at, the end
I'd sum up exactly want you want at the top and bottom of the Q and bold something specific like I am specifically interested in formal models explaining this phenomenon
@ArtemKaznatcheev And, as always comment on answers you don't feel answer your question and state why. If you feel they are a poor answer in general (no references, conjecture, incorrect) leave a downvote and explain why as well

10:51 PM
Thanks @Ben!
Welcome @digitaloday!
Also @ArtemKaznatcheev and everyone else, sorry I have been delayed in responding today. It's been a very busy work day!

Hello @digitaloday

hello all

@ArtemKaznatcheev; Just brainstorming a few thoughts; I applied a couple of quick edits: (1) the title should capture core aspects of the question (i.e., I've added formal computational model to the question title.
I've also changed the question to bold rather than "quotation".

@BenBrocka Wow is that our first migrated question?
(migrated in that is)

10:54 PM
Can't check without mod tools
It's the first I know of

Yeah first I know of

The question is basically a "find that study". Should we have tag and or any rules for this sort of question?
I think it's certainly on topic
gaming.SE has a "game identification" tag or something for these situations

which has been a topic of contention over there, lol

@ArtemKaznatcheev; I agree with comments by Josh and Ben; I think you're doing the right thing; other options; explain the relationship between language and your question a little more; are you only interested in models that pertain to language or other models;

in our case I think it's clearly on topic

10:56 PM
You may want to offer a bounty at some point if you think the question needs more attention. From the upvotes, the community clearly likes the question. But I think the first step is what you're doing now, thinking about ways to make the question clearer.

@Josh It's a fairly common tag though, and I think it's a very good resource for that
heading home

@BenBrocka oh I think we should have such a tag, yes!
@BenBrocka catch you later!

yep. good to see a migrated question

Now that Ben's leaving I feel decidedly underdressed, both @Jeromy and @digitaloday are wearing ties :o

@BenBrocka I think we should keep an eye on things. My first thought is that if find a study questions are occasional, they are fine.
@Josh lol; I'm still on holidays for one more week, so I'm in shorts and a t-shirt.

11:00 PM
whew Okay I feel better now :-)

ya know, professionalism and all that nonsense ;)

hahaha yeah really. This is one of the many benefits I enjoy about working from home. T-Shirt is proper attire :-D
cleans up some stars
Not sure if you all were aware @BenBrocka @StevenJeuris @JeromyAnglim but I made you all owners of this room. Considering us four were the most active chatters it seemed appropriate

I noticed; I never participated in chat on stats.se (my main other site), so I don't really know what entitlements that gives me, but thanks.
303 users; is that good for 11 days into public beta?

@JeromyAnglim Basically it means you can pin messages (stars which never go away, useful for announcements), migrate messages to other rooms, manage RSS feeds, clear stars, set the topic/description, etc

okay. great.

11:06 PM
@JeromyAnglim seems good to me. Quite good I'd say... but I am not basing that on any sort of metric other than my gut feeling, so take that with a grain of salt ;-)

anyone studied natural language processing / computational linguistics stuff?

@Josh I've been keeping a close eye on new people contributing answers, and it's been good to see each day at least a couple of new users with cogsci / pscyh backgrounds contributing well researched answers.

@digitaloday I'm fascinated by it, but sadly have never studied it

well fascination is as good a start as any, and we're practically in the same boat lol

@JeromyAnglim absolutely! I agree.

11:09 PM
@digitaloday alas, It's not my area. Perhaps you should ask a question and test the waters of the current community

I'd say definitely you should ask a question :-)

i'm still new to the field. I have a strong background in computer science, and I'm currently conducting some research/development that involves NLP

@digitaloday sounds interesting

machine learning is a favorite topic of mine, which interrelates with cognitive science frequently
i am writing a question as we speak

@digitaloday I agree, I think espescially since the AI site was closed, we can make AI questions on-topic here
Again, not a topic I have any actual experience with but one I love to read questions and answers about!
Well the extent of my experience is working with the MIT 6.270 robotics kits. And trying to program them to learn (badly!)

11:17 PM
i happen to be one of the few boneheads who doesn't believe NLP and computational linguistics should be lumped together with AI, even if our findings are helpful to those folks :P

Agree. AI is certainly on topic here, which is not to say that other sites might offer better answers.

@digitaloday I was referring more to your point about machine learning. I'm not sure I'd say that NLP should be lumped together with AI either
Ben and I and someone else were discussing something similar a few days ago, specifically started by a comment about Apple's Siri software
Feb 2 at 21:54, by Ben Brocka
@Josh NLP are of course AI complete, it's one of the fundamentally difficult aspects of AI. I would certainly not discount Siri as "not an AI"
(conversation started here)

true
i was just making light of the long-time argument between computational linguistics and AI folks

ahhhh :-)

Q: Seeking research studying the affect of sender/receiver based on chat or text messaging lingo and emoticons

@digitaloday very interesting!
> They used the Google-Profile of Mood States (GPOMS) that measures mood as Calm, Alert, Sure, Vital, Kind, or Happy
"Vital"? What kind of mood is that? :-)

regardless of what type of moods they are, they managed to predict the dow jones 3 days ahead of schedule lol
only in my case i am not trying to predict anything. I am seeking to use machine learning algorithms to classify/categorize conversations

@digitaloday haha, that's great. Especially these days! :o

Tim Stone over at MSO is trying to write a bot to analyze Stack Exchange election town hall chats. But it's nowhere near as complex as your question
Although with how long it's taking him it might as well analyze people's moods. He's been working on it for like ten years. Okay, maybe one and a half years, but still

lol 10, 1.5, it's all the same ;)

Not that I am one to talk, my personal projects are all gathering dust :-)

my personal projects are too, but i have a deadline on this project lol

@JeromyAnglim I know you're in Australia, but what's you're actual timezone (if I may ask)
I'm UTC -5 here, just trying to understand a bit about when chat is active / when we have people monitoring the site

it's 10.33am; Melbourne: I guess +10 (althought it's daylight savings at the moment) or something

good chatting with everyone. I'll talk to you later

@digitaloday take care!

11:34 PM
@digitaloday nice to meet you

@JeromyAnglim great, thanks! It's 6:34 PM here, about to leave my office and grab some food. Just have to make my damn code work first :-)

Okay. good to know; I'm used to most people being in Europe and America; I have my ubuntu clock which lists the times of the major US, and european time zones.
pesky code

I just added a Melbourne clock to my dashboard :-)

cool; and now you're covered for Sydney as well.

11:43 PM
Cool. Always wanted to visit Australia! Hopefully some day

U.S. is on my list for this or next year.
I promised myself I'd send off a paper today, so I might get down to it. Hopefully it wont take long; but these things can be unpredictable.
chat later...

Good luck @Jeromy!
