12:00 AM
I love flipping through Keynote presentations using my Apple Remote with my MBP

sure

especially when everyone else uses ugly PowerPoint slides and taps the space bar/right arrow

Do you have an iPhone or iPod touch?

iPhone
I'm aware of the remote app, but I think that requires the devices to be on the same network
which isn't a big deal, but I prefer the directness of sending the command directly to the computer, as opposed to blasting it through the network, which may have issues
and I prefer the tactility of a real button

use a pair of headphones

12:09 AM
um, what?
I suspect you know something I don't

Depending on what hardware the Mac is, you can use your headphone's button.
The headphone button works as play/pause, next, previous, on desktops too. As of... 2010 and beyond? 2011? Something like that.
I don't recall if the actual microphone aspect of it will work in the headphone port or not.

interested, I didn't know about that, but there are two problems. first, I'd still be tethered to the MacBook with a wire - the headphones. second, I have enough of a problem getting my headphones to play/pause on my iPhone (don't know if this is an iPhone problem or a headphones problem (or both)) and I wouldn't be prepared to trust them with the task of changing slides during a presentation

interested indeed

the ideal solution is one of those RF USB changers that professional presenters use, but I don't present enough to justify buying one

The ideal solution is using a wireless mouse.

12:19 AM
well, what I'm talking about is basically a wireless mouse, but without the mouse part
you didn't see Steve Jobs getting up on stage with a wireless mouse
for the purposes of changing slides

nope, just a horrendously ugly clicker.

nor an iPhone for that matter
horrendously ugly, but super reliable
in Apple parlance, it needs to just work without failure
one needn't look further than the iPhone 4 announcement to see how unpredictable wifi can be

They could make a better clicker.
Apparently I haven't seen the iPhone 4 keynote, because I didn't get the reference.
#shameonme

12:35 AM
it was the one where Steve Jobs yelled at everyone about being on the wifi
it might have been edited out of the video they posted

12:59 AM
@JasonSalaz That's what I want
I know I can make it more expensive, but that's the one I wanted.

Late to the game–but I have a USB remote from Logitech or Kensington that wasn't very expensive.

The specs on that MBP were:
# 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
# 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x2GB
# 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
# SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
# MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
And actually I want Apple Care, which bumps it to 3 grand.....sigh

1:22 AM
@KyleCronin Awesome. Just awesome.

Wow! that was fast.

I'm here to serve

I hope whoever gets elected can live up to your high standards

me too

1:29 AM
Of course it's you & Nathan + the new three, so even if the new folks are lazy slackers, things shouldn't get worse unless they do bad stuff.

right
my biggest concern is a new mod being overzealous with their new mod powers
2

depends on whether or not I turn into a lazy slacker once we get new mods ;)
2

once you have a diamond you don't have anything to prove, but you could upset a lot of people if you don't mod with care

@KyleCronin That's the big concern. Any mod is dangerous. Three new ones at once could be catastrophic. We must choose wisely.
Which is why aspirations of world domination might not be the most desirable feature in a mod...

indeed
the important thing is to approach everything by giving people the benefit of the doubt
and never to lose that

1:33 AM
Yup
Power corrupts. You and Nathan don't let it go to your heads. That's a very very good thing.

we try :)

Which is why bmike would be such a safe choice, should he decide to run. He already has so much of the power anyway that it's unlikely to cause any problems.
And Jason (hi @JasonSalaz) has such a great history of working with the two of you.

Jason and I don't always agree on what should be done in terms of moderation, but the important thing is we're able to discuss it

I somehow doubt you and Nathan always agree. It's rather natural for people to disagree from time to time.

not always, but often
I think that having moderators that actually talk to one another on a regular basis is quite unusual for a SE site
most of the other sites' moderators only talk to each other if there's a problem that needs resolving
AD was like that too, until I started the podcast and Nathan and I started talking a lot
it's hard to imagine what this site would be like if there were no blog, no podcast, and no chat

1:45 AM
No kidding.
We don't really have a frame of reference without it. I know I've been in chat for forever and a day.

jrg
@NathanGreenstein Thanks again.

@jrg No problem! Best of luck in the AU election.

jrg
@NathanGreenstein :) Worst can happen is I don't get elected.

1 hour later…
2:59 AM
@KyleCronin I think it's easy to imagine, but not a particularly happy image. The chat room makes this all so much more human.

2 hours later…
5:26 AM
@Daniel I was kidding!
@KyleCronin that would be really hard....

@daviesgeek I know. If you really aspired to world domination, you wouldn't announce it.

haha

(but it's starred in the sidebar; it must be true, right?)

Yessss...... (laughs like a maniac and rubs hands together)

[Maniacal laugh] (did you see The Muppets?)

5:33 AM
No.
Which one?

The one that came out this past year. I think it was called "The Muppets".

Then, I didn't.

The villain kept saying the words "maniacal laugh" to prompt his henchmen to laugh.

I am most definitely not up to date on movies/tv shows, etc.

He was bent on world domination.

5:34 AM
Except for Hawaii 50
That is one tv show I do try to keep up on

I can't say I know what Hawaii 50 is. I'm in my own insulated bubble.

That's one of like 5 TV shows I actually know about.
And I'm even worse with movies

So if this is going to turn into some sort of chat about pop culture, I suspect it won't be a very interesting one.

:-)
hello Kyle

Hi @KyleCronin

5:37 AM
hi

Do you know more about pop culture than we do?

(What he said)

oh, definitely not

Wait, you and Jason were just talking about your odd TV habits.
So a bunch of socially challenged people meet in an internet chat room. Hmm, what a concept.
:-)
BTW, @daviesgeek I'm not convinced that downvotes on meta necessarily need comments -- since they don't affect rep, some people use them just to say "yes" or "no" -- an additional comment wouldn't add a whole lot of information.

:-)
@Daniel I think it'd be helpful

5:39 AM
I used to be awesome at all the sections of Brain Quest except the culture

OK, but it's not "completely useless" as you asserted.

and I would just have no idea

@Daniel That was a canned comment

Is a "I agree" or "I disagree" comment really that helpful? People with something to say usually do.
Canned comment?

Benjol No more re-typing the same comments over and over! This script adds a little 'auto' link next to all comments boxes. When you click the link, you see a popup with 6 configurable auto-comments, which you can easily click to insert. This script was inspired by answers to this question on meta...

5:40 AM
@KyleCronin What's Brain Quest?

(^What he said)
'cuz I was going to ask the same thing

@daviesgeek Wild!

yeah, it's for kids

@Daniel i love it!
@KyleCronin hey I did those things!

5:41 AM
I think I saw some of those at a garage sale once.

Now I remember what they are

basically, something educational parents could buy their kids

yup

I liked them, but they had a culture section I would always have to skip

@KyleCronin Isn't it like 12:00 over there?

5:42 AM
Culture... isn't that what they grow bacteria in?
12:42, to be exact

@daviesgeek Nathan uses TextExpander for that

@KyleCronin I know.

TextExpander FTW

believe it or not, Daniel and I share a time zone
I'd love to get TE if it weren't so expensive
speak of the devil

I think I got it as part of a package once.
I didn't know @NathanGreenstein was evil.

5:43 AM
I don't have a use for TE

He seems nice enough to me :-)

me too

@Daniel not so much evil, but coincidental that he showed up just as we mentioned him

@KyleCronin Nathan and I share a time zone

I know. Just being obnoxious. As I'm apt to do after midnight.

5:44 AM
@KyleCronin that is pretty funny

I'm only evil on Wednesdays. You guys are fine for awhile.

Oh good.

Whew...

You didn't even @ him when you mentioned him.

hey i gotta go to bed.....

5:45 AM
So what time is it on the west coast?

@daviesgeek bye

9:45
I shouldn't be here either :)

9:46

we're talking to people with bedtimes, Daniel :)

I was trying to say to my Dad's macbook outside where he's working
by using ssh

5:47 AM
@KyleCronin As opposed to people like us whose lives would be better if they did have bedtimes.

but, ssh wasn't enabled, so I thought I'd check out the chat room.....

@Daniel true

Definitely true...

The snowman is gone. :-(
Just because no one keeps you from staying up all night doesn't mean your body will be happy about it in the morning.

It is.....:-(

5:47 AM
you're right, I wonder why... winter's not over

I have to go...
Just as you're talking about snowmen too.......

Maybe it melted. Although I heard that there's actually some cold weather up in Maine, or so a friend of mine in Orono said.

bye

bye

I'm gonna leave too

5:48 AM
I don't know what that has to do with anything, but
good by

Kyle, I'm leaving you with that flag. Have fun.
See you guys

Wow, an actual logout
Is @JasonSalaz really here, or did he just drift away but not log out?

I'd guess it's open in a tab on his computer
but he's otherwise idle

Right
I do that far too often.

Q: Triple Boot Lion+Win7+Linux

slfI have a challenge for you. I've been doing lots of research, and I've found quite a few questions here left unanswered. I know this is possible, I'm interested in hearing from people who have actually done it and learn from their direct experience. Currently, I'm running Snow Leopard, dual bo...

5:51 AM
Insanely too localized?

I'm not sure
they certainly put a lot of work into the question

True.
Triple booting is a nice general scenario, but those are some specific roadblocks.
But the solution, if it isn't too idiosyncratic, should help others.
Maybe it should stay...
Is this the flag to which Nathan referred?

yes
I'm trying to see if there's some way to edit the question to get to the heart of the problem

I hate to lose information, but the wall of text is more than a bit intimidating.

yeah

5:54 AM
I can't believe I got to field a suggested edit when both mods were logged in. That stays open in a tab, though.

oh, the suggested edit queue is a low priority for me
there are a lot more people that can handle them than can handle mod flags

Good. I'm working on proofreader. 65% of the way there.
@KyleCronin That's really an intense question.

yeah

Is the core question about triple booting?

right
I think I'm just going to leave it, I don't know enough about this guy's problem to edit it and it's on topic

5:59 AM
Or about installing without a working internal drive?

well, he his goal is in multiple parts
triple booting, installing the old HD in the optical bay, etc

To give @daviesgeek credit, this one would actually be much easier to understand if the subject line were more of a complete sentence.

indeed

It's like the War and Peace of AD posts.
But he's wrong that you have to boot from internal drives. I boot from a USB stick all the time. Well, not all the time, but when I need to.

what OS do you boot?

6:01 AM
Lion

Mac OS X is quite flexible about where it's booted, but I'm not sure about Linux and Windows

Fair enough
It's on topic. I'm still leaning toward "too localized." There's a core question that isn't too localized, but it's a duplicate

indeed
I'm hoping someone can help him

Well, maybe it could happen.
I'm sensitive to our unanswered question rate. If this one doesn't get an answer, I'd want to see it closed in a cleanup sweep sometime in the future.

definitely

6:08 AM
I'm not generally trigger-happy on closing (indeed, I started out at the opposite extreme), but a particularly specific problem on an odd hardware setup just doesn't seem likely to me to get helpful answers.
But if you leave it, someone might answer. Which is good.

right
it's situations like these where I wish we had the ability to revisit questions a few days or a week or two later

Can you flag it with a note to yourself/Nathan to revisit it after x date?
Or is the flag queue like inbox zero?

well we already do have some flags in there that we're waiting on
but it's not designed for that kind of use
it's best to keep it clear

I didn't know how bad of a kludge I was suggesting. I do see how clear is good.
Well, you could always use that best of all databases: Stickies to track the post number and revisit it later.

yeah, there are definitely out-of-band solutions

6:15 AM

I'd probably go with a google doc so all the mods can share it

Right. I forget about those.

so have you listened to your podcast yet?

No. I hate the sound of my voice, so I've been putting it off. But I should.
Downloading.
1 minute remaining

I think a better microphone will do wonders for you

6:19 AM
I'll still have my voice.
:-(
But yes, it could help.
I want to record some lectures, so getting a better audio input might help for a number of things.

some of the better setups record the same kind of sound you hear in your head when you're talking
for example, I absolutely love the sound I get from my mic
really sounds like 'me'

What do you use?

a Heil PR 40, connected to a Joemeek threeQ preamp, then a Mackie Onyx Blackjack audio interface
I went a little nuts
basically, I just bought everything Dan recommended: hivelogic.com/articles/podcasting-equipment-software-guide-2011

He makes his living doing podcasts.

yeah, and he's had a lot of experience trying out different setups, so I trust his opinion a lot
plus Leo Laporte also uses the PR 40

6:24 AM
Well, that all looks outside my budget at this point, but something better than a $12 USB headset might be possible.

yeah
Nathan uses a Samson Q2U

I'll have to check that out.
But for now I think I might take a cue from the young people on the west coast and try to stop pretending I'm nocturnal. Be well.

you too

9 hours later…
3:03 PM
Have the moderator nominations been closed early or did I miss the boat?

they're still ongoing
but the banner expired

phew - I'll get my nomination posted this morning :-)

looking forward to it :)

3:23 PM
@KyleCronin the proverbial hat has been tossed into the ring ...

excellent
we have some great people in the running (you included)

@KyleCronin Oh my goodness - there are numerous great moderators in the pool. It will be very hard to pick from the many deserving ones. I hope a few more step in as well.
I've just pinged three I think would be great in comments to answers they made...

I think a short blog post about the position and how to apply might be a good idea
might get some more prospective mods

Good morning. Plus hat tip to bmike for tossing his own hat.

3:38 PM
lots of hats

Mine's a wooly one with flaps you can tie up on top or un der the chin

fancy

So many hats… but for today's discussion I'm pretending to wear the long-leather-billed "Hemingway" hat in my profile photo.

4:30 PM
Thrilled to see @bmike is running. An obvious first choice!

I'm voting for @bmike
I'm also going to try to knobble everyone else into thinking I am @Daniel by asking people to refer to me by my first name ;)

2 hours later…
6:17 PM
@Daniel :-)
@KyleCronin IIRC, Linux is as flexible as OS X as to where it can be booted.
I think the problem is Windows
@Daniel What about Trello?

6:35 PM
Ooo...This is cool!
I can add myself to the elections.stackexchange.com page to see how I compare to others running for mod without nominating myself:

1 hour later…
7:53 PM
Hullo.

afternoon

Afternoon in this part of the world too.
I know, I'm only two time zones over. But some of our readers are in much more exotic locales.

What Time Zone are you in, Moshe?

8:32 PM
Hey @KyleCronin @NathanGreenstein, (1) any idea why podcast #22 is listed as " - Standard" in the blog post list? Otherwise, (2) could you ping Rebecca Chernoff to come take a look? I don't get her in my @ list anymore.
(That list shortens way too fast.)
Unless... @RebeccaChernoff just happens to work anyways even if it's not in my autocomplete list?
Apparently it does? That's nice :). Hi Rebecca.
Any idea what that "- Standard" is? I've never ever seen it before, and can't seem to find info on it.

hmm no >_<

Actually, I think I may have just found it.
But the source link is dead... sigh.
And then I realize, there is a stack exchange site for wordpress.

Q: Formatting Standard Post Format

user4679I'm looking to display an image for all the "standard" post formats on my site. I have done some research on how to add quote, video, photo, etc and have been able to implement these images into the site but when it comes to the "standard" post type I get nothing! I have done all the necessary s...

So I think I'm right, it's a Post type that was enabled as of the last WP update, but I don't see how to choose the type.
I suspect I can't change it, because we only have one type, nothing defined for any others. I'm fine with that :).

8:53 PM
Hey all you folks whose search-fu is better than mine: Is there a way to do a search to find out how close you are to the sportsmanship badge? I feel like I've upvoted a ton of answers that compete with answers I've written, but apparently that ton is less than 100 answers.

isn't it 100 and 25% of your overall votes?

9:10 PM
Oh. Most of my votes are for questions, so that would rule me out. I see.
Thanks, Jason. Helpful clarification.

Did that explain why you don't have it?
25% or greater, you should have it.
I think. Perhaps I should go look at the badge definition.
Oh, right, Sportsmanship is competing answers. I had Electorate in mind.
I'm not sure that there is a way to search for that, considering that votes are hidden to (more or less) everyone.

9:56 PM
You know, it's actually kind of painful jumping out to a blog. I'm reading through the Main (big M) Stack Exchange blog, and it sucks. No voting, no flagging, no nothing. I think there's room for a SE-style blogging engine.
Comments on a blog = answers, comments on answers (and the question/blog post) disappear entirely.
The medium is different, the activity really isn't.

@Daniel Aw shucks - thanks. cc/ @stuffe
