@TùxCräftîñg you gotta stahp beging for upvoet in chat and add detial explanation

@LeakyNun people might show it more love if you added an explanation instead of begging for votes in chat.

@zyabin101 how can u VTC a gaot

3:39 PM
@zyabin101 ^

@Downgoat Nope, I was saying that VTC (Syxer) is still deep dreaming. :P

Syxer =\= VTC

Syxer === VTC

@Syxer hai .o/

A: Tips for golfing in Jellyfish

Leaky NunRemove unnecessary whitespaces In my Jellyfish answer to this question, I golfed my program from 41 bytes down to 29 bytes just by finding alternative methods of placing the functions and operators so as to minimize the number of spaces used. 41-byte version: p n + + `1 /+&* `/* r&;

3:41 PM
@Optimizer no i think it means "sixer"

> Remove unnecessary whitespaces

@TùxCräftîñg idk if legitimate tip or just asking for downgoats

@Downgoat Removing whitespace is somewhat relevant to Jellyfish, which is whitespace sensitive.

Ohh, I found a turtle toy!
ffc? is a little snippet that is to be repeated for generating a path.

ooooh

5:03 PM
This does a small step forward, puts a circle on the spot and randomly turns.
I found a way to make a map with this snippet.
Take the snippet ffc? and append an arbitrary number of bs to it.
Each b has an uniformly random chance to generate a bot on the spot.
Which has the same genome.

One of the perks of slogging through Nethack's source for 10 days is that I can pretty much answer any question about Nethack on Arqade

However, this way will break prematurely for larger amounts of bs due to limited gen amounts.
Another way is to repeat the snippet ffc?b which has larger output and is more safe for larger repetitions of the snippet.

Maybe use d instead of b?

Yeah.

@Qwerp-Derp I tried but I got an error.

5:14 PM
@Doorknob When your name was Doorknob冰, were you aware of this?
My search tool links it when I try to define the character in that name:

怎麼樣?
@JonathanAllan I want to know one thing. You take an input of a year, alright, and only the year is known, and you want us to output the day and month?
How?

you have their year of birth, you have their star sign and you have how many days into the (1-based) star sign they were born.

First of all, those "Zodiac" signs are actually between months. You can't tell my exact birthday using that sign.

I listed the dates in the post
that's half the point
I don't believe in it either, that is irrelevant

5:25 PM
Okay, so the input is only the birthdays you listed?
Of Donald Knuth et al?

@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ The reason for my comment is that I could have a shorter code by doing a simple sum (range and sum all) than by using the Gauss formula.

like any other challenge the program should work not just for the test cases

Okay.

the test cases have some random dates and some "edge cases"

Speaking of Donald Knuth, hardly anybody knows about him despite his inventions.

5:26 PM
Why is summer so hot .___.

crazy

@HelkaHomba idk

@TheBitByte I know he invented up arrow notation! (right?)

better than cold winters :)

@Syxer Umm... why did you reply on chat?

5:27 PM
@JonathanAllan I dunno. If it's cold you can just wear layers.

@HelkaHomba And TeX. You forgot TeX.

@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ Because it's easier and doesn't clutter the sandbox

;_;
ruby Curses dont work on windows

@TheBitByte I hope @HelkaHomba was being facetious

This is like talking to a pro dev in C, asking hm who invented C, and he doesn't know or care.

When Dennis Ritchie died, nobody ever cared except a few tabloids, at least that's what I think/remember, I could be wrong.

@Syxer Umm... that's why the sandbox is there. You can't spam chat because "you don't want to clutter the sandbox".

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Eʀɪᴋ ᴛʜᴇ GᴏʟғᴇʀThe famous Gauss formula: code-golfmathnumber The famous Gauss series goes like this: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 ... 96 + 97 + 98 + 99 + 100 = ??? Gauss figured out that, if you separate the numbers into two groups of 50 numbers each, you get: (1 + 100) + (2 + 99) + (3 + 98) ... (48 + 53) + (49 + 52...

@Downgoat i have a suggestion about the Graduation Design Userscript

@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ Comments aren't for extended conversations usually

5:29 PM
@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ shrug to be fair I thought the discussion would actually be longer than it was. :P

^^
@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ "spam"

@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ People chat about sandbox stuff/challenges in chat lots of times. It's a little less maintainable but not a big deal

@quartata Who said it's going to be an extended discussion? Also, a new chatroom is usually created for extended discussions.
@HelkaHomba Didn't know, although I dislike the idea...
@BetaDecay Yep, that's spam.

@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ Slow down with those pings haha.

If we can't even speak about sandboxed challenges here what the hell can we speak about that would be on topic?

5:31 PM
Cats & XKCD.

Goats and llamas usually

@TheBitByte I'm replying to multiple people, ya know.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't cause any particular problems to discuss things either in sandbox comments or in chat. Mostly the conversation is disposable and doesn't need to be kept after the challenge is edited. Occasionally a challenge needs a long term persistent discussion and then a new chat room is created.

@EʀɪᴋᴛʜᴇGᴏʟғᴇʀ Yeah, I thought you were talking about spam and posting lots of messages yourself.

@TheBitByte XD

5:34 PM
Replies are a great way to keep the chat intelligible when several conversations are happening at once, or even just to tie connected messages together when everyone is talking about the same thing. As long as the person you are pinging isn't complaining, I don't see a problem...

If you star this, you will have starred it. If you don't star this, you will have not starred it. Not starring it means that it has not been starred. Therefore, star it. When you star it, it will have been starred. . Not starring it means that it has not been starred. Therefore, star it. When you star it, it will have been starred.

@zyabin101 I agree. Cats wouldn't be so bad. Not sure why Martin dislikes them :I

Cat. He is the funniest of all!

For those who don't know where this is from, click here.

I dislike all animals equally

@TheBitByte there doesn't seem to be anything here

@betseg Click again. Edited.

someone know a ruby module to etablish a ssh-like connection (receive pub key, encrypt symmetric key, send)?

5:42 PM
@TheBitByte I think I need a link to every cat subreddit

Can't vouch for any of them, but rubygems has some:

https://rubygems.org/gems/ssh/
https://rubygems.org/gems/net-ssh/

@BetaDecay I can't make a cat-related multireddit because I lost my reddit account to /r/TwitchPlaysPokemon for "mini-modding" :I

Lemme search the multihub...

5:45 PM
@BetaDecay I advise you to not visit the link I posted. Cat. Cat. Cat.

@zyabin101 Mine seems larger by default, since it's a search term and not a multireddit.
@HelkaHomba Pikachu isn't an animal, is he?
I mean, not a real one...

@TheBitByte Pikachu is a Pokemon, but IMHO there are multiple views on whether Pikachu is a fictional animal.

@HelkaHomba You forgot one option ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

@zyabin101 Why is the Ash guy always 10 years old? Lots of Pokemon fans used to argue about this.

5:49 PM
@TheBitByte He's an electric mouse. My hand is holding one right now.

@Fatalize Why would you ride Lenny? Lenny rides you

@HelkaHomba He's, I mean, it's, something.
But it's Pokemon.

God damnit, my "showcase your language" got upvoted twice in a row and I have no idea what to even do for the first one

@TheBitByte best idea 10/10

@zyabin101 Because he broke the rules.

Who would ride a porcupine yet not a frog?

Wrong, sir! Wrong! Under section 37B of the contract signed by him, it states quite clearly that all offers shall become null and void

@HelkaHomba Frogs are slimy
You'd fall off
At least if you ride a porcupine, the quills will stop you from sliding

@TheBitByte You're getting off topic. We're talking about horse-hypotheticals here. ;)

5:55 PM
@HelkaHomba I said Good Day!
Also, you must be young, I guess? You didn't get the reference.

how to set vim to use 4 spaces as indent?

@TheBitByte I get the reference but I can't pinpoint where it's from :D
@TùxCräftîñg Use emacs
Or Notepad++

my compose key is not set up ;_;

@BetaDecay It's from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory...

That's it

5:57 PM
@BetaDecay Best idea 10/10

and i am on linux so no N++
and emacs is evil

@zyabin101 Nuh uh. Vim forever.
What is this, Zyabin101? Some kind of funhouse?
There's no better time to learn. Learn vim.

@TùxCräftîñg I installed WINE just to use Npp :P

Q: Tab key == 4 spaces and auto-indent after curly braces in Vim

mmcdoleHow do I make vi-Vim never use tabs (converting spaces to tabs, bad!), makes the tab key == 4 spaces, and automatically indent code after curly brace blocks like Emacs does?
