Q: Is this sentence formal enough in academic writing: "Suppose the experiments are done under condition A?"

zellIs it formal enough to say this in formal writing: Suppose the experiments are done under condition A? Above, condition A is already mentioned in the previous section Condition A: ... I have three questions regarding this sentence: Should I put 'the' in after "suppose"? Should I change "d...

Guys! I've just gotten my first email from a predatory journal! I've officially made it!
They also didn't bother to use BCC, which is really grinding my gears

hello there fellow SE users
one of our users at Anime&Manga is wondering why anime works are not a commonly discussed topic in academia

Q: Why isn't anime critically analyzed like other forms of literature or entertainment?

The Pickle TicklerIn high school English classes, we read many classics, such as Shakespeare, Steinbeck, Lee, etc. In many other classes, popular TV shows and movies are analyzed. Granted, these are also classics, such as Hitchcock's Psycho or Nichols' The Graduate. Why is anime/manga not as critically analyzed b...

@ÉbeIsaac I did not realise that it was undergraduate-specific and the only indication for this that I see is that the score in question is used for “tertiary entrance purposes”. The divide between undergraduate and graduate is by far not as big in my country than it apparently is in the US or in some other countries, hence I usually do not notice the distinction.
This does not mean that I disagree with the divide. There are obviously some problems of undergraduate students in other educational systems that are not a good fit for this site.
That being said, I really wish we could come up with a more reasonable criterion for excluding those questions. I fail to see something inherently problematic on the question in question.

@Hakase As this is specific to the focus of academics in the field of contemporary arts, film, and similar, it is not really a question that academics in general provide insights to. I do not think we have any such expert lingering around here, but you might find one on Movies & TV.

thanks for the 3 pings :D
I guess I'll ask the movies guys too
thanks for advice

@Hakase I always forget how to properly split posts. I figured since they were in very short temporal distance, it would not be too much of an annoyance.

nah don't mention it :p

@Wrzlprmft You're right. This keeps me thinking, why shouldn't undergraduate problems be discussed in this site? Of course I heard some time ago that a proposal for this was raised in Area 51, but not sure what is the status now.

AFAIK there are some aspects pertaining to undergraduate academic life in the US and probably other countries that are unwanted.

Q: Finding the right journal

savI am trying to publish a paper on an image processing algorithm. (Signal separation) I made a submission to peerj but they have rejeted it saying: I am afraid that your submission does not fit our Scope - https://peerj.com/about/aims-and-scope/cs - because PeerJ only considers and publis...

Q: College undergraduate advice questions

eykanalWe've had a couple questions since the dawn of Academia.SE asking for advice about undergraduate-related topics, the most recent being this well-formulated and generally pretty solid question. In the past, we've discouraged these kinds of questions. That was a while ago, though, and we've matured...

Ugh. Every summer I get used to working on a nice, quiet, spacious campus and then I every fall a horde of new students descends and reminds me that it isn't usually like this.

That's why I developed nocturnal habits, @ff524 :) By studying late nights, into the early mornings, and leaving by the time the morning crowds come in to do all of their printing, scanning, group projects, and other noisy stuff, my fall, winter, and spring semesters feel almost as quiet as the summer semesters :) But you have teaching responsibilities, so I'm guessing you can't shift your schedule, unless you teach night classes...
