@GraceNote, I don't know how to sort tags based on the criteria you gave for achievements. can you elaborate why that one is a "good meta tag" and is exempt?
@agent86 I don't think so. The only tag I'm defending is specifically achievements with respect to the actual "achievements" systems in place in games, also known as Trophies on the PS2 and also present in numerous other games even outside of large services.
So what if inception gets the additional meaning 'recursion' in a few years. English is ambiguous enough already, one additional synonym is hardly going to make a difference.
@GraceNote I realise. It's just... language purists are tiring.
@GraceNote I think you could defend pretty much every tag on that list if you were willing to drastically limit its scope; that's one of the issues I have with this whole discussion. It's possible to ask a generic "story" question where the story stands alone separate from game context, but that's not how it's applied in the majority of cases.
@agent86 I don't see myself as limiting the scope, because this is entirely what achievements was originally designed to contain. It's very similar to steam referring to Steam.
@GnomeSlice Which is probably based on the movie with that name. However wrong it might be for the word inception, it's still correct for the actual movie reference.
@agent86 Point me to questions where achievements isn't being used to refer to the actual achievements system. Every question I see is always about either achievement systems or about trying to do some task related to an achievement. I don't see it being misused.
I've invented "sailing", I have got workboat. It swims where are resource (icons of bread and coin), but there is nothing I can do. Intuitively I thought there should be something like Workers have. I mean - workers have option for example of bulding farm. In workboat there is no
The whole lot of Achievements as a system is founded on the need of gamers to try and get every last one - thus, being able to contain those within the scope of a game works excellently.

@GnomeSlice I mean I don't see how it makes sense as an example - it's flawed.
@GraceNote but who cares about a lump of all the questions with any relation to achievements? I don't care about PS trophies, but I might care about steam achievements or XBL achievements...
@GnomeSlice Because you're publicly whining about it in a way that makes people presume you actually want to be heard (and thus elicits responses) on the subject.
@GraceNote I don't understand the desire to group the questions this way. I can understand in the context of a game, I might want all the batman achievement questions, but outside the context of a game, why would I want all questions about any achievement in any game?
It's the same essence - the actual system element is identical and meaningful. It doesn't and isn't used on its own, but it is effective even across games, both for league purposes and for categorization.
@GraceNote so I guess I'm trying to calibrate here, are there any other tags that fit this exemption of "applied across many games but are still useful"?
@agent86 For the most part, none have nearly the prevalence of the same nature that achievements has. It's a much better parallel to [strings] on Stack Overflow than any other tag.
@agent86 You can ask about Steam achievements as a whole outside the context of a game. The reason we use just one tag is because using 3+ tags to handle the same concept just for different services is extremely unwieldy.
@GraceNote well, I'll try my best to add this as a filter, although perhaps I will have to ponder the meaning of this more before I can fully understand it. This feels subjective, and that's fine, it just means I have to absorb the perspective in addition to the decision criteria.
decision criteria are easy, but perspective is harder :)
@agent86 Think of it this way - it's basically only the way it is because we condensed steam-achievements, xbox-achievements, and trophies all together. These tags would make sense to search on their own, correct?
@GraceNote so how is challenges different? sometimes challenges are achievements. also, unlockables - sometimes achievements yield unlockables... they feel similar although they are being treated differently.
@agent86 It is. That's why we first looked at it from a service perspective, not from a per-game perspective (citing the Bunny Must Die example from my answer before).
It is on a closer level to ubiquity as the construct of a "string" is in programming - different languages will all utilize it in different means, but the construct is a much stronger one that stands on its own.
@agent86 Think of it how a string can either be an object in its own right, or it could just be an array of chars. We'd still call it a string and tag it as such.
Is there going to be a mass of people who want to just look at "string" questions across all languages? No, not really. People might be strong in it, especially in their own domain languages. And it even can work on its own, if you look at general string theory and manipulation outside the context of a language. Fact is, it is a ubiquitous and universally understood concept.
I suppose that even if I'm taking a broad look and then we're paring it down, it's still adding value to an extent. I'd like to be 100%, but 95% is better than the 0% it was previously. Perfection is always my goal, but it's not always attainable :)
@FallenAngelEyes I could consider that we could just split up the 3 primary services and leave any non-service based achievements untagged. I'm not deadset on keeping them combined.
@GraceNote That in itself is a slippery slope. A string in C is just a character array, while a std::string in C++ (or a String in Java/C#) is an object.
OK, the other slope this causes is why are we killing off questions about game systems? weapons in games tend to have stats... this is a common element to games, but as I recall, we're killing off weapons.
room topic changed to The Bridge: In which we enjoy mostly topic-free discussion of videogames, the internet and the lazers thereof. Now with 5% less alot and 7% more jarate. [murder] [quantum-puns] [wipqozn-gravitation-law]
@Powerlord You understand why I tried to defend weapons, neh? But not to get too deep into the subject, but there's a slinge of difference between how weapons and strings compare with how achievements and strings compare. I used to use the weapons : strings comparison a lot, but it's not entirely the best in accuracy.
Speaking of which, thanks Nintendo for ignoring Gunpei Yokoi's stated wishes for the Samus character and stretching the Metroid series out another 5 games after his death.
I have done several dozens of the radiant quests from Vex and Delvin and earned a lot of money doing this. Beside the coin, does it make sense to do those quests?
In the beginning I thought that doing them will enable the special quests to retake certain cities, but after I while it felt more li...
(His stated wishes being from an interview when he said the Metroid series may be over, but Samus would likely appear in a new series. This was after Super Metroid.)
@Powerlord I maintain that there are multiple timelines. Only logical explanation, since certain suites of supposedly "canon" games simply ignore other "canon" games. cough Hunters.
@agent86 But I don't believe in skeptics.SE! Thats just a myth!

@OrigamiRobot That is pretty cool (even if I am not entirely sure what the pre-release is for)
In Zuma's Revenge, you can get bonus points for making gap shots in a level. I have never done any, because I honestly do not understand what they are.
What is a gap shot? How do I do one?
I'm looking for the fastest methods to level up my smithing and enchantment skills. (Note that part of this includes using the minimum amount of resources as well.)
So far I'm smithing/workbenching leather bracers, requiring a minimum amount of leather which is easy enough to come by.

What games for PS3 and the 360 can you play 4 player split screen against other players online or against bots?
Also, for 360 games, is gold membership required for every player? If not, are the game modes limited?
@AshleyNunn I'm more interested in how the Skyrim question asker couldn't find that answer... Because it's pretty much on every interwebs forum I've ever seen. o.O
@IanPugsley The episode of Adventure Time from last night is on right now!
In Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls, I've found a Daemon Statue as part of my character (Human Fighter) quest.
I can sell it to Ironhand the item shop owner for 3,000G but since I've got several hundred times that in spare cash already it doesn't seem like a particularly good deal. Still, it's ...
If that's a genre, we're fast approaching the point where a genre is not actually a classification of a game, but just a classification of elements that might be used in a game.
