@Burgi no worries, give me a shout if you've got any questions for my sins I've been in the UK pentest world for quite a while.

is dbo.fnGetDistance a built-in SQL function?

2:52 PM
@cat Kurumin Linux. Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time.
It brings back memories...

@burgi ^^^ Appropriate for you I think ;)

hehe
that plus limited "real" sleep mixed with legacy ex-boss crap

@Burgi I bet you drank more beer than water on your stag weekend ...

dude you have no idea...
jaegar bombs in every bar

3:01 PM
!!define jaegar bombs

@ThatBrazilianGuy No definition found.

Self-inflicted injuries then. Can you remember how many bars?
The Jägerbomb /ˈjeɪɡərˌbɒm/ is a bomb shot mixed drink that was originally mixed by dropping a shot of Jägermeister into a glass of Red Bull or other energy drinks. In German-speaking countries, it is called a "Turbojäger" or a "Fliegender Hirsch"/"Flying Hirsch" (Flying Stag)—where "Fliegender" is derived from the slogan "Red Bull verleiht Flügel" (Red Bull gives you wings) and "Stag" originates in the Jägermeister logo. A long drink mixed with Jägermeister and Red Bull is called "JägerBull". In Finland, it is called an "Akkuhappo" (Battery Acid) while in Greece it is called "Υποβρύχιο" (Submarine...
@ThatBrazilianGuy ^^^

I want my shot of Jägermeister into a glass of Jägermeister, please.

i have an enormous bruise on my left side from the go-karting

@Burgi I prefer TVRs :) Tequila Vodka Redbull

3:02 PM
i remember those....
we walked into a weatherspoons on saturday afternoon and ordered 24 pints

I read that as weatherpersons.
And thought 'damn, that's a politically correct bar'

Looked back at the transcript and noticed the talk about swollen batteries.

@bwDraco lol. Yeah.
I need to dispose of that firetrap soon

they are massively into their drinking games
which is something i hate
but you can't be the stick in the mud

@Burgi Next time just offer to be the dedicated driver ...

3:06 PM

lady at the battery store said it was overcharging

Nexus 6 had similar issues.

@bwDraco mine was not that bad
tho there was a pressure spot on the display I didn't notice

Battery actually vented (but not with flame).

I'd decided to pull out the battery for a quick restart, and was like "Mom. I think you need a new phone battery for your birthday. BRB"

3:09 PM
my old sony ericsson used to go through batteries every 18 mths

battery.com.sg These guys have a retail store I go to when I need a battery replacement

they always inflated

@Burgi 3-4 year old phone
Its a redmi 1s

I'm actually more concerned about this happening to an LG G5 because of how the battery is inserted.

@bwDraco Oh, its going to be a pain
happened to my dad's camera battery

3:10 PM
@JourneymanGeek I thought camera batteries used prismatic cells that don't expand like this?

least if its got a exoskeleton the bulging would be constrained so it would pressurise and explode violently expand less
@bwDraco this was bloaty

What was the battery for?

er. the camera was a ixus
can't remember the model number, its ollllld

Hmm. Not often that prismatic cells fail this way...

wasn't very bloated

3:13 PM
Most often happens due to overdischarge.

but enough that it didn't quite fit in place
might have happened

That's probably why my Nikon EN-EL12 battery (for COOLPIX S9900) is slightly thicker at the edges: to allow for the cell expanding.
That cell, as far as I can tell, is prismatic.
It's a lot worse for Li-poly cells.

3:37 PM
lol
I didn't even check the chemistry.
I essentially went "oh shit, that's not right", got a new battery , then scared myself by seeing how dangerous it was

PSA: I've rewritten the tag wiki excerpts for all Windows Server tags for versions since 2003. The new excerpts all include the following text: "Questions about administering a Windows Server system in a business environment are off topic for Super User and should be asked on Server Fault instead."
TBH, most Windows Server questions (those that don't involve operation in a home environment) don't belong on Super User.

Okay. Should we take to Meta to discuss all those off-topic IT questions (including Windows Server)?

@bwDraco Why do we need to discuss? "issues specific to corporate IT support and networks" are already clearly mentioned as off-topic in superuser.com/help/on-topic

Q: What makes a question "specific to corporate IT support"?

MosesI encounter many problems every day where I work. Some of them I can't find the answer to, and eventually some of them get posted on Superuser by myself. Of course, I don't bother mentioning I'm actually finding the answer so I can provide "corporate IT support", but I've been wondering - why is...

Q: What is the definition of "corporate IT support"?

fixer1234I've run into a few questions like this one: Restricting certain printers to certain programs. The question was written by someone working in a company. I get the impression that it is a small business, probably too small to have an IT department, and the author is probably a manager or owner. ...

Q: How to deal with the numerous off-topic (business environment) Windows Server questions

bwDracoWe get lots of questions about Windows Server. By their very nature, most of these questions involve a business environment and therefore do not belong on Super User, since both the help center and tour state that "issues specific to corporate IT support and networks" are off topic here. I am still reading. But I know enough of SF culture go fo BLINK-tag Bold Explicit
And I do not consider myself a snob there. But where I will go to any lenght to mention "Make a backup. Test your backup. Test it again on a different system" on SU I barely mention that idea on SF. And I suspect that I am gentle there.

A: What makes a question "specific to corporate IT support"?

Hennes questions that are related to servers/ADs/DCs belong on Server Fault Uh, no. Not always. Just those used in a professional environment. E.g. I got a Dell poweredge R300. @Hennes Complete agreement!

I forgot about that one. I should link to it

hmmmmmmm is this drama?

> Uh, no. Not always. Just those used in a professional environment.
Already aware of this, the question reflects this fact.
> Of course, I recognize that people may run a Windows Server machine in a home or testing environment for any of a variety of reasons and questions of this sort should not be migrated. How do we distinguish between business and non-business Windows Server questions?

@bwDraco You can't always, unless the asker is up-front about it. And even then they can mostly edit and re-phrase the question ...

cat
There's always drama when certain drama creating people are involved

5:17 PM
If asked on SF I selenty assume different thingss.
E.g. sending a failed disk to a recovery agency is sensible, even if the cost is a few $1000 US dollars.
For a home user: no so much
None of this in in the FAQ helpcenter. Instead it is in room culture
If you do not know that then you may get burbed

Started Windows 10 free upgrade at 8AM
It's almost 9PM here and for 5 hours it sits on 99%...
o.0
SVCHOST is high in CPU Usage BTW...
That's on old laptop with slow HDD...

Wanted to upgrade on laptop with SSD but turned out it has volume licensed Windows 7 Enterprice which does not qualify for free upgrade. Must contact system administrator to get it but laptop belonged to Villanova University in USA...

Which probably means they do nopaid for your w7 lincense atm.

@Boris_yo you do know that after months apon months of SU questions about upgrading to windows 10, the consensus has been to download the whole thing and Not to use the update/upgrade method, which works badly and after hours and hours fails for quite a large ammount of people, probably more than get it to work right the first time.

5:56 PM
@Psycogeek I have seen many questions about upgrading but nowhere found about high failure rate.

I told the saga of my W10 upgrade here a while back
It was a massive pain

@BenN Was it SU question or chat?

Chat
Basically, I had to use the Media Creation Tool (not WU), do a clean boot, and clear out WIMMount

11 days left if you're upgrading to Windows 10.

My recommendation is to image every machine before trying an in-place upgrade, in case it blows up

6:04 PM
@BenN Is this the tool you used?

A: Can I become eligible to receive free Windows 10 upgrade?

aneeshepThe better option is to re-install Windows7 and Upgrade to Windows10 using USB pendrive or CD. You can Download windows10 iso and prepare bootable USB/CD using Media Creation tool. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install No need to wait until you get the upgrad...

Yep, that's the one. The WU path didn't work at all for me; it just spun forever

@BenN What path and what spun? I have SVCHOST process spiking in high CPU usage. I think it processes something related to existing updates. I have this same process on another machine and it also is high when I do Windows update.

cat
Mine spun forever at the reboot

Theoretically you can use Windows Update to handle the W10 upgrade, but it just waited forever at "preparing for installation" with zero disk/network utilization
I didn't bother attaching a debugger though

@BenN It was suggested that to get free license key you must upgrade. Starting Windows 10 clean will not work if you want to get your key.

6:09 PM
Right. The MCT's in-place upgrade works for that too
It also gives you the option to blow away your existing installation if you want

cat
lo

Hi!

@BenN But that's after clean boot?

Right. "Clean boot" refers to disabling all non-MS services

cat
6:12 PM
I thought clean boot meant booting Linux

It's also the "solution" offered to basically anything if you go on an MS forum ;)

@BenN You think I can have license key issued while clean-booting temporarily? Then I can secure Windows 10 while still using Windows 7 for now.

Clean-booting just means you've temporarily disabled non-essential services

Or I have to do in-place upgrade first?

I had to clean-boot for the updater to work

cat
6:13 PM
You can clean install with an existing W8 key, not sure about W7 but probably

But clean booting isn't directly related to OS switching

!!facepalm

Dirty boot?
Didn't Will.I.Am make a song about that?

Assuming an unlimited budget (cost of purchasing equipment is irrelevant), are Macs still preferable to Windows systems (with similar hardware) for photography and other creative applications?

@bwDraco there's no universal answer because different people prefer different things; I'm sure there are professional photographers who use Windows, Mac, or Linux (exclusively or in combination with one another)

Do the advantages that Macs had several years ago in creative applications still apply today?

@bwDraco depends on which apps you want/need and which ones are available on your platform
Adobe does all of their stuff on Mac and Windows (IIRC) but there's a whole world of software outside of Adobe

A: Why are Apple Macs used so much in the graphic design industry?

Vendor lock-in is the answer?!
I'm still seeing widespread use of Macs but Windows workstations by the likes of HP and Dell are becoming just as common these days...

@bwDraco there's no general-purpose answer; use what works for you

7:50 PM
@bwDraco On day 11, Microsoft sent a SWAT team to my door and forced me to upgrade

"Sir! Press the Install now button and step away from the machine!"

I willingly took the upgrade on day one.
Honestly, I don't regret it.
The desktop Macs have pretty much stagnated.
Only the iMac with Retina display has advanced to Skylake. Mac mini is still on Haswell, while Mac Pro continues to use Ivy Bridge-EP (and I don't know how Apple is still getting these parts—do note that Xeon processors tend to have longer lifecycles, though).

@bwDraco Ivy EP is 22nm

Ah.
Whoops.

Macbook Pro is on Broadwell-U

cat
8:04 PM
CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT

Okay. Because Intel has probably shut down its 32nm fabs, I was wondering...

That's still a generation behind.

the last 32nm chips from Intel to be produced were Sandy-EP

Where's the Skylake-U systems?

8:04 PM
22nm is still active due to Haswell-EP being fairly new still
@bwDraco they're coming in August/September; we're at the end of the existing macbook/MBP lifecycle right now
and yeah, due to the fairly slow cadence, it can seem like the hardware is fairly old

cat
Eh, Haswell-EP isn't "new" it's two years old

In low-power platforms like this, Skylake is a substantial improvement over Broadwell.

kind of like installing RHEL 6 on the day before RHEL 7 releases

cat
Two years (and two generations) is a loooong time in CPU development
Unless you're AMD

@cat but Broadwell-E is brand spanking new

8:06 PM
@cat We're not talking about Haswell-EP. Mac Pro machines are still using Ivy Bridge-EP.

it was earlier this year that Haswell-E was the latest enthusiast gen

cat
@allquixotic Yeah, only cause Broadwell was 6-9 months behind schedule

cat
Broadwell-H on the desktop only had a lifespan of 3-6 months, and I'm hoping but most likely not going to get Broadwell-E also having the same lifespan
(Because I'm still waiting for Skylake-E)

@bwDraco MacOS isn't a boat anchor like Windows is though, and if you've ever opened up a Macbook or Macbook Pro, you'll see that it's a small motherboard (that could almost fit in a iPad) and 70-80% of the volume of the innards of the system is battery cells
many laptops have a little tiny bar of battery and are mostly componentry inside
a Macbook is mostly (by weight, volume) batteries

cat
8:08 PM
@allquixotic Macbook Air's are even more extreme

@allquixotic Vertical integration.

cat
The mainboard is about the width of a RAM stick -_-

with that much battery, you don't care as much about CPU power consumption
you still get 5-6 hours of heavy use, 8-10 hours of idling

cat
However I have disassembled and serviced Macbook Pro's that have the traditional square thick battery at one corner of the machine that can be hot-swapped

Aren't modern Ultrabooks like this, too?

cat
8:09 PM
In fact, I've not seen a Macbook Pro where batteries take up more than maybe a half of the interior surface
Macbook 12 and Mabook Air, sure.

@cat Are you talking about the white MacBooks? Those were discontinued many years ago. It's either MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.

cat
Yeah, even the 2015 Pro is still only about 1/2 battery
Older CrapBook Pro

@cat that's even newer than half the stuff Louis Rossmann has to service :P

cat
Heh
They seem to have shrunk the touchpad in recent years
^^ 2012 13" pro
2013 13" Pro ^^
^^ 13" Air, which is the last Macbook I had to service
Seems like the smaller the Macbook, the bigger the battery is proportionally.
And Macbook 12 of course because that's just getting ridiculous
Won't be long before it's just a high-end phone mainboard slapped in a 12" chassis and surrounded by batteries.

Q: SSD encryption the proper way

famyseWhen encrypting devices it is always recommended to fill it with random data first, or it would become evident that the drive is encrypted and how much encrypted data there is. I've read that on a ssd this can cause performance problems since there are no empty blocks where the drive can quickly ...

Too broad? I did leave a tip:
The best solution is to use your SSD's self-encrypting capabilities. Many consumer SSDs are in fact capable of hardware-based encryption. Every recent Samsung SSD, for example, supports military-grade AES-256 encryption, right on board. You just need the software to tell the drive to use it—even a BIOS password will enable it.
