2:00 PM
@SimonForsberg thoughts? opinions?

needs more exploding bear traps...

Greetings, Programs.

I can't tell if you are serious or not, @Pimgd...

@Vogel612 that will not work here

@SimonForsberg I killed a massive zombie

2:01 PM
@Donald.McLean Greetings, User

@Quill Currently only looking for more information... Who/When/How does the moves to the Nth happen?
You are not being watched, @Donald.McLean.

Blood & brains were everywhere

@syb0rg what was its name??

@SimonForsberg who, when = any time non-site-business chat happens, how = message moving

@microbuster It's a chat meme, I answered this question that had been "stale" for a while: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/134798/27623

2:03 PM
@syb0rg ah

A: What's a Zombie? And what are the many other memes of Code Review?

Simon ForsbergMeme: Zombies Originator: retailcoder (lol.upvote or Mat'sMug) Cultural Height: During The Mission Background: In a (successful) attempt to motivate the community in reducing the number of unanswered questions, a Call of Duty was made in which every unanswered question (no upvoted answers) is ...

You're not really answering the question. — Quill 13 secs ago
You know, the one in the title, and in h2 in the body

@microbuster It was the "largest" zombie in CR history

@syb0rg Great answer though, seems like you got heavily awarded for it too.

2:04 PM
@syb0rg cr????????????

@microbuster Code Review

@SimonForsberg Never to be watched again.

@N3buchadnezzar Yeah, I didn't expect @Quill to put a bounty on it!
Thanks for that @Quill

@syb0rg His reason is fantastic

@syb0rg whats really a zombie in cr

2:05 PM
IntelliJ says "1 new fatal error"

@microbuster Read the meta post @Mat'sMug put above

check details... "error message: null"

@syb0rg which one

thanks IntelliJ, that was real helpful

2:06 PM
well read it. not helpful for me

@syb0rg I probably should've put more, hopefully some more bounties will be added to it later

@Quill lol lol lol

@microbuster Not helpful? How so?

@syb0rg dont got that zombie

**Meme:** Zombies

**Originator:** retailcoder (lol.upvote or Mat'sMug)

**Cultural Height:** During [The Mission](http://meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/999/call-of-duty-were-on-a-mission/)

**Background:** In a (successful) attempt to motivate the community in reducing the number of unanswered questions, a Call of Duty was made in which every unanswered question (no upvoted answers) is to be regarded as a Zombie. Every new question is to be regarded as an incoming Zombie.

2:09 PM
what its actually

Huh, formating do not work?

@Quill By "how" I mean more... "What happens in the chat? What is being said? Who/How is it suggested to take it to Nth? Is it suggested or just moved?"
@syb0rg I saw your answer but have yet to read all of it. I do hope you get upvotes because you have a good and valid and strong answer and not just because you killed a huge zombie.

@SimonForsberg usually just moved, or sometimes an RO asks first

@SimonForsberg it's a domain-based review, rather than code, but eventually goes back to the code. It's far more than somone would usually do

And there's no site business going on often when stuff is moved?

2:11 PM
not generally

@SimonForsberg I was actually hoping you would read it, since you along with @skiwi have ML experience and would be good at critiquing it

@SimonForsberg It really deppends.

Others may have ML exp. too but I just know you guys do

@syb0rg I hope @skiwi will take the ML course on Coursera, just like I have done. I also think DJanssens would be interested in it, as he is a Data Scientist.
@N3buchadnezzar care to elaborate?

hey @SimonForsberg and @syb0rg

2:13 PM
@skiwi Hey!

@syb0rg I've got it open on a tab since yesterday
(For what that's worth :P)

If the discussion derails too far or too long it is usually moved as well. There was a huge 220 messages moved about the newest Batman movie around a week ago. No other discussion going on, but it was pretty dominating.

I'm thinking about adding an anomaly detection section to the answer, since the whole point of the network is to detect signature forgery

@skiwi and will have it open in a tab for X more days until your browser crashes?

But I haven't finished that week in the Coursera course yet

2:15 PM
@SimonForsberg Nah, was planning on reading it today

@skiwi Keyword: planning.
Do or do not. There is no try planning.

Had on interview today so didn't have much time for it yet :P

@Mat'sMug I wonder if I still have the same meme attached to my name: meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/a/1029/27623

@N3buchadnezzar Okay, other occurrences when you can remember it has happened.

@SimonForsberg looks like one, two, three, four, five

2:17 PM
@Quill Thanks

and that's just in the first page of searching "moved" in 2nd monitor transcript
in fact, besides moving to Rubberduck and a room called City Building or something, I can't see any moves (in the first page of searching "moved") because of interrupting site business
'current RO's have been very diplomatic' how are the ROs being diplomatic if they're ignoring how users feel about message moving and they're working off vague criteria? — Quill 5 mins ago

@syb0rg Are you taking the course from Stanford University?

diplomatic and vague criteria are not related in any way...

@SirPython Yup!

Which week are you on?

2:20 PM
9

@Vogel612 I guess the first half of my message is valid?

I'm currently investigating the moves you pointed at
regarding the move to SpecificPostDiscussions:
> me: Mind if I move this to the Nth?
I mean... it's squarely on topic in here, but getting a little long and it's basically just you two discussing...

two users in heated discussion pretty much block the entire room
that's just what happens

56 messages moved by Phrancis: Those are all about how much Voltage you'd need to electrocute soemone where the conversation devolved into welding and how that would affect people's bodies
237 messages to the Nth by Phrancis .... the number speaks for itself

Correct - I probably would add a count += 1 inside the for row in partition (and of course set it to 0 before my loop). If this works for you, please remember to mark it as the accepted answer :) I would also recommend posting this code over at codereview.stackexchange.com - there are some other improvements I think you could make — Wayne Werner 10 secs ago

2:26 PM
@syb0rg Ah, I'm only on 6 right now.

@SirPython Oh, you're taking it as well! Nice!

45 messages moved by Phrancis: Politics. Move suggested and backed by me, backed by other regulars, too

I flew ahead at the beginning, and then I've been going a lot slower recenly

Same here. I'm actually really far behind in the course, but I still have access to the materials so I'm going at my own pace.

I'll leave for now but I think I will post something on the meta later.

2:36 PM
@Quill if you are talking about messages that have been moved that were not interrupting site business, I think I have adequately explained that in my Meta answer, of which I have edited
it's not about interrupting site business it is about stuff being on-topic

which is not answering my question

one line, what is your question, please answer with one line.

I'm saying you guys are too strict with what you define as on-topic

I answered that as well

33 mins ago, by Quill
You know, the one in the title, and in h2 in the body

2:37 PM
we are guiding the discussion away from the stuff that has little or no meaning to Code Review(and/or software development).

You're moving all non-site-business conversations out of chat

the overgeneralizations aren't helping anyone

> No, The 2nd Monitor is not too strict in which conversations are deemed appropriate for Code Review (and/or software development).

the non-answering the question doesn't do that either
good...

what messages/discussions that fit that description have been moved?

2:40 PM
23 mins ago, by Quill
@SimonForsberg looks like one, two, three, four, five

also keeping this discussion at this point seems hurtful
soo.... TACOS

I love how we're supposedly not strict even though our regulars are dropping off the site like flies on a bug zapper

tacos but feel free to continue ... in another chatroom... (serious here, even although it is ironic?)

@Pimgd not even Tacos here, IMO

honestly, this whole conversation seems off topic because its a conversation about being off-topic...

2:41 PM
first one, has nothing to do with code review
second one is about specific posts, which should, by definition have their own chat room any way

Q: condensing a list of lists with 'description' lines in Python

AlecI have a long list of data pulled in from a csv file that has comments / descriptions scattered throughout the document. I'd like to collapse the descriptions into the last element of each row of data, and my current solution seems slow and overly complex. Rows with data have values in the first ...

Q: Simple dispatcher implementation

SelvinI need a simple dispatcher implementation(invoke methods on one thread from many threads) once you dispatch method curent thread should wait for results, so I'm thinking about something like this: public class Dispatcher { private readonly BlockingCollection<Tuple<Delegate, object[]>> runQu...

At this point I'd even take politics....

3rd one has to do with electricity, this could possibly be on topic if we were talking about coding for hardware peripherals or something similar

@SimonForsberg requesting for a short room-timeout

4th one is batman v superman. not Code or software at all, unless you created an app to calculate......

2:44 PM
@Vogel612 there's no need
there's no name calling or actions violating the be nice policy

beating a dead horse after having two (or thee) people asking for a topic change is at least mildly annoying

@Quill none of those fit the description of on-topic, and they are lengthy discussions, if they were like a handful of messages, they probably wouldn't have been moved

if not outright rude

timeout pls

@Malachi They fit your off-topic description of this totalitarian 2nd Monitor, they're not interrupting site business in any way

2:46 PM
so your question is: I want a new definition of on-topic for The 2nd Monitor

It's tempting to downvote this based on the profile codereview.stackexchange.com/users/111408/selvin

interestingly a timeout wouldn't even help here, because ROs can talk over timeouts
@pacmaninbw vote on posts, not users

@Malachi Yes. the ROs are too strict with what they define as off-topic.

@Vogel612 Of course, just said it was tempting.

@pacmaninbw I have a reaction to this but it's not at least 2 of 3 (true, nice, necessary/useful) so I'mma not reply

2:49 PM
I am sorry all.
I guess I have a bad sense of humor.

@pacmaninbw don't be sorry, learning is good :)

everything ok here? how do I go have a 15-minute meeting and come back to conversations about timing-out/freezing the room?

@Mat'sMug step 1: go to meeting... /s

(facepalm)
lol

2:52 PM
@Mat'sMug I woke up to this. Just been watching it for a while.

step 1: make sure @Mat'sMug is gone
step 2: have conversations that incite people

@EBrown unrelated to current conversation, but meta: what was the URL you have your dashboard under again?

Cloud9 was acquired by Amazon Web Services.....

@Vogel612 I don't, yet. Still only privately hosted.
What data do you need?

I'd maybe want some data to supplement a write-up on site health. But I'd need to write some stuff to find out exactly what I need.
I'll get back to you :)

Zak
2:54 PM
Can I just say, in the absence of any imminent site business going on right now, asking @quill not to discuss a core aspect of the site because you think it's getting annoying is, IMO, inappropriate.

Ok, I can get something around for you to play with here shortly.

@Zak that's not the point of asking to stop

@Zak alright, lemme just trash the above shitposting as well I read that as you telling me to stop.... never mind <_<

@Zak there is another reason for moving stuff to other rooms and that's organization

@EBrown Hey! Hows Monopoly going?

2:55 PM
the point was that at least I was seeing repetition in the conversation

@syb0rg Gray, I've been slowed down by this lady.

@Pimgd aye. like when I start babbling about Rubberduck bugs in here

aside from that at least I was feeling in a mindset of defensiveness
and since there already is a meta post with this, the discussion would most probably be better fit on that meta post

@Vogel612 called a circular conversation, isn't it?

Zak
3:00 PM

@EBrown The lady is not interested in Monopoly?

@Mast No, she's interested in breakfast, dinner, movies, walks in the park, etc.

Zak
@EBrown pkemon go?

@EBrown All very time consuming and distracting activities.

@Zak And that.
@Mast Yes.
My time is split between work, play and lady friend.

3:02 PM
so I answered a question yesterday and the other answer on the question got the accept and an upvote. the author has since redacted their accept and given it to me. strange things are strange....

Personally, I have been prioritizing the lady friend.

Congrats ;-)

@EBrown Smart man.
@SimonForsberg Why would we need to rename anything anyway?
Keep Status Quo.

@Mast Yeah, I figured she seemed a bit more important than the other stuff.

Q: If someone catches a Pokemon that is on my property, is that theft?

Mr. ADoes something that is virtually located on your property like in Pokemon GO incur any kind of property right for the property owner?

Is this a serious question? — Viliami 18 hours ago

wah, not even Law.SE is safe from the trolls

lol

@Zak Pokemon Go (Screw Yourself Law trolls) :^)

My lady friend is freaking obsessed with that game.
I don't understand it.
I hate exercise.
And Pokemon GO is an excuse to exercise.
No thank you.

3:29 PM
There's not really a whole lot of exercise in it, it's just walking

@DanPantry Would you like to see my step-counter from work yesterday?

I live in a city so I don't have to go very far to get inundaned with Rattatas and Zubats.

walking youth will Make America Great Again

@EBrown Go for it
I walk avg 5km every day so
I only know this because I hatched a 10km egg in two days

How the F do I work this website?

> What if the homepage was just a picture of a white wall? Think about it. People will be like “Where am I? What’s happening?” and isn’t that the whole point of having a site?
@Design team — white wall it.

lmfao

@DanPantry:
> Totals
18,406 steps 20 floors 8.77 miles 4,782 calories

@EBrown Damn, 12km?

That's yesterday.
At work.
@DanPantry Yeah.

Are you coding on a treadmill?

3:33 PM
I don't code at work.
I'm an Inventory Analyst.

Are you treadmilling on code?
Oh.

My job is to track all the product in our warehouse.
So I walk the whole thing several times a day.

So... why don't you guys have electronic tracking?

It's 0.5mi from end to end.

Not that I'm trying to put you out of a job

3:36 PM
I like my job.

I do about 9km average walking on my university days also that's crazy @EBrown

You could say you're F(#)it

AWS gives you certs.. for free? what?

My walking at work keeps me fit, so I suppose that works out. My lady friend likes my physique.

3:37 PM
You may get better responses on CodeReview.SE than here. — TimoSta 25 secs ago

Wow, AWS certs are free. that's impressive. I believe they do wild card too

Should this be on CodeReview? — PyNEwbie 8 secs ago

Q: Linked List design and implmentation - C++

user111415Seeking recommendations on how to improve this code, LL always seem to be a struggle. 1. class list { private: struct node { int data; node* next; node* prev; }; typedef node* nodePtr; nodePtr head; nodePtr temp; nodePtr prev; public: ...

3:53 PM
I've found this weekend's outing

I was going to make a joke about pub fights being an australian equivalent, but then I remembered.....
hey there @RobertHarvey

Just looking at your "too strict conversations nth monitor" meta q

oh wow, it's @RobertHarvey. welcome

Yeah, like I'm really something. :P

Well, your user number has 4 digits. That has to stand for something. ;-)

4:01 PM
This must be the new cool hangout. It used to be The Whiteboard, but I think most of the regulars there got disgruntled with the way things were going with Programmers and left.
That, and I was curious about Candy Mountain.

I don't think there is a cool hangout

Well, this one certainly appears cool enough to warrant a split between productive conversations and unproductive ones.
The Lounge is the only other room that I've seen that has gone to such lengths. I suspect you don't have to wear a flame-proof suit in here, though.
2

Oh hi, @RobertHarvey!

Hey, Simon.

I'm reading up on the latest chat.

4:08 PM
If an answer has received a bounty can the same answer receive another bounty ?

I hope so

I think it can, IIRC there are answers with +1400

possible answer invalidation by mp252 on question by mp252: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/134743/revisions

@Quill because of syborgs answer ?

@Heslacher yeah

4:11 PM
@RobertHarvey I wear one anyway. 110% comfortable.

@Heslacher Yes, but the second bounty has to be bigger IIRC.
Or maybe not, not sure. But yes, multibounty is possible

well I did the minimum because I'm a poor 9k rep user

@Quill I have lost on that question a bounty of 150 on january

Where can I buy a Flame Proof Suit?

@Vogel612 I see no reason to freeze a room just because some people are not interested in continuing a certain discussion.
and I was AFK so I couldn't do it even if I wanted to.

4:12 PM
@pacmaninbw Amazon I'd bet.

thanks both of you. I will see after @Quill bounty is awarded.

@Quill What regulars are disappearing?

@SimonForsberg you

Me, Jeroen said he visits less

me

nhgrif

Zak
4:14 PM
@Quill Something I would add. Is that necessarily due to topics of conversation in the 2nd?

^^ nope

@Zak Some of it's not due to the topic of conversation, but how "not-100%-code-related" topics are handled.

@Zak kinda. I don't feel the love and happy campfire nature that the site had when I joined
of course there's always gonna be the "it was better in the past" argument, but still

@Mat'sMug @SimonForsberg Ethan, Hosch have been around a lot less.
Me, but it's unrelated to anything here.

Hosch is busy being slave-driven in VBA Rubberducking though

4:16 PM
Ismael left a while back.
Haven't seen Caridorc around much lately.

Is this about 2nd Monitor or about the site in general?

Donald.McLean lurks, but doesn't talk. (Though I suspect that's unrelated to this.)

He's never been around too much.

@pacmaninbw I was under the impression it was The 2nd, but it could spill over into the site as well.
If we create an atmosphere that isn't conducive to new users here, then that atmosphere could easily influence the site.

4:18 PM
I saw answers from Caridorc this week

Q: Build nested object structures from CSV input

uhClemI'm reading big csv files and mashing the lines into hierarchical objects for analysis and display. Q: PHP - Simple TCP Proxy

maff1989In a fit of spontaneity, I wrote a quick-n-dirty TCP proxy in PHP. The code: set_time_limit(0); // Run server indefinitely, or until SIGINT (CTRL+c) $destination = '127.0.0.1:25'; // Where should we connect when client connects to us? $server_addr = '0.0.0.0'; // Which address should we bind t...

IMO for some users it is work related as well. Having tons of stuff to do leaves less time to chat

I'm not trying to imply that at all.

My lack of activity is 100% work related.
And personal life related, even.

4:22 PM
If you have another question, you should make a question, not post an answer with another question. With that said, consider using the method here: stackoverflow.com/questions/14931700/… to find the value instead of looping. Also, if your code is working, your question should go on Code Review: codereview.stackexchange.comOpiesDad 7 secs ago

my lack of activity can be explained in one of the two long rants I did that you can find under the conversations tab

And if the time allows to do something else I usually answer a question or two instead of talking in chat.

If the code is working and you want advice. It would be better for you to hit up Code Review: codereview.stackexchange.comMikanikal 27 secs ago

@Zak @EBrown @Quill I'm here less because I have a full-time job, not because of site health or conversations being moved in The 2nd Monitor.

I understand that everyone is busy and it's unrealistic to expect that everyone should be active 24/7 forever

4:24 PM
IOW as the Earth spins, so would CR's active members
2

I couldn't have said it better myself ^^
From the 2.5 years that I've been here, I've seen a lot of people go, but I've seen much more people come.

ditto
and more will be going, and even more will be coming

@SimonForsberg My ping at you wasn't meant to imply that, I was saying that Ethan and Hosch have been here less. My grammar/commas failed me.

let's make sure the ones going remember CR as home, and let's make the ones coming feel at home on CR
7

@EBrown I just pinged some people I thought wanted to read my message, not saying you implied anything :P

4:27 PM
@SimonForsberg Oh lol I was slightly confused for a moment. :P

@Mat'sMug and let's make the ones coming back after a while feel "Ah, it's good to be home again!"

Hello everyone.

hi @user2296177!
Welcome to The 2nd Monitor!

@user2296177 You haven't changed your name/avatar yet lol

4:29 PM
wait a sec, we've seen you before... GET A NAME!!! too many numbers to remember! lol

If this room is supposed to be Code Review's flagship/primary chatroom, then two things should never happen: 1. it should never feel dead; 2. it should never be hostile.
2

@Mat'sMug Didn't even remember me?! So much for making it feel like home.

lol

@syb0rg I'll get around to it.

@user2296177 would you remember me with a random gravatar and "user23788" for a name? ;-)

4:30 PM
@user2296177 Can I make suggestions?
User McUserface

lol

What if his parents called him that?
So insensitive
I appreciate you the way you are, @user2296177

Hello @AaronHall
@user2296177 Welcome to the 1k club!

4:32 PM
hi!

low

1k, starting to become a force to be reckoned with
watch out mods, I'm taking your positions, all of them

@AaronHall Another Python guru I see, very nice
Just starting to get "serious" with Python myself

Related: I'm 15k now... again I think

@Mat'sMug I've been thrown into DI at work as well now

4:34 PM
@Vogel612 You and I keep overtaking each other

It's dreadful but when it works, it's so pretty
20 NuGet packages each with their DI config that is then grouped together in the eventual runner package. Childcontainers, registries, registrars, rootcontainers, difactorydelegates and more of that funky stuff

What have you tried? Have you looked at the documentation? If so you would see that the -Force parameter will overwrite an existing file. As far as making it more efficient, have a look at Code Review. — briantist 49 secs ago
CodeReview is not a good place for this code yet as it does not do what the OP expects — Matt 25 secs ago

@syb0rg race to 20?

one's counting robots on the wall, the other's counting birdies on the wall - race on!

4:45 PM
that's what CR needs: regulars pairing and racing to 20K in a mad zombie hunt
6

From tomorrow... I'm out for tonight

@Vogel612 You'll have an advantage on weekends, I'm usually out on them

@Mat'sMug Hmm... user23788? I think I remember that one!

took me a year to remember it

Carty on then :{D

4:47 PM
the only userID I know (besides mine now) is Jamal's 22222

@Mat'sMug didn't you and I have a race like that years ago?

@SimonForsberg yes, exactly =)
lol, "years ago"

I won, didn't I?

you did, then.
:)

Yeah yeah, I know, I've surrendered now.

Q: Using pointers and type cast to break up integers into byte array

@Mat'sMug Not a bad idea. Finding fair competition is going to be hard though.

or race to a badge, whatever - the idea is to foster answering participation
is nice and all, but it doesn't do that

That just gets a lot of high-quality content, keeping the zombies away.
