@ByteCommander It's a proper question, and reproducible askubuntu.com/q/745259/295286
It was Mint in the edits , but applies to Ubuntu as well, so keep it open

@Serg Our new Mod.

@MuditKapil no , not at all :)
I was 5th in the primaries, there's no way i can win elections or be 2nd

You never know. I have no idea how well primary results reflect the actual ones. After all, not very many users bother to vote.
For example, in the last elections:
> 6,587 voters were eligible, 2,025 visited the site during the election, 1,549 visited the election page, and 680 voted;

and up to that in the primaries theres no downvoting
and everyone has only three votes to give

@NathanOsman That's spooky!
@James The answer is 6.25.

6:16 PM
@terdon @Serg totally off topic here, but the longer I think, the more I am convinced that election could be surprisingly different from primary. No one can predict the effect of priority, especially in the regions below 1, and indeed downvotes do not count.
@terdon I am a noob, but where did you get those figures?

probably from one of the meta posts

@JacobVlijm previous election page
it's from 2014.

@Serg Why that Q link?

@jokerdino so I am a noob

@ByteCommander because it mentions the same Input/Output error
@JacobVlijm roses are red, violets are blue , in some things we're n00bs , but that's what humans do :)

6:23 PM
:)

your rhyme is a little off Serg :P

Hmm... similar, but not exactly the same.

> roses are red, violets are blue
I am not colour blind.

that rhyme isn't set in stone

...if you don't pay, you'll get free glue

6:24 PM
Uhm, am I right that shutdown, reboot, etc should require sudo?

yay, free stuff . . . wait what ???

@JacobVlijm The election pages have standard URL formats: http://askubuntu.com/election/N where N is a number from 1 to 5.

@ByteCommander yes you are right , except on 16.04 didn't ask be for no sudo or root

Well, 1 to the current number of elections. This one is the 5th, so 5.

@terdon AHA, thanks

6:25 PM
@Serg WHY!!?? ;____;

em . . . . \ (o . o) / I dunno

@Serg on 16.04, since it's 100% systemd, isn't /sbin/reboot a symlink to systemctl?

I just typed rebooton Xenial, expecting it to complain for not running as root.

@terdon it is !

But it did not complain - POOOF!

6:26 PM
yeah, i did the same thing as Byte

That's probably why it doesn't complain. it looks like it's been set up to allow regular users to reboot.

And why isn't that at least reflected in the manpage?

@terdon bad idea for servers
good idea for desktops

Also I assumed that /sbin/* requires root to run, no matter what.

@ByteCommander No, it's just that on many systems, /sbin is not in a regular user's PATH. I think it is in Ubuntu though

6:28 PM
@ByteCommander well, run find /sbin/ -type f -executable
You will be surprised
@terdon on my system /sbin is in the PATH

Sigh.

le sigh

@Serg Yes, that's what I said. On Ubuntu, /sbin is in the PATH, but on many systes it isn't.

Yup, all sbins are in PATH here as well. They have even higher priority than the corresponding bins.

@terdon aaaah, right right . . . on openSuse I was wondering why I couldn't use ifconfig till i figured out /sbin is not in the path

6:30 PM
But who the heck decided to change that - and why silently, without any kind of note?

@ByteCommander There probably was a note. Lost in the init war posts.

honestly , i need to read those notes
ok, breakfast/lunch time

I did not hear of them yet.

hi everyone
Should I say something about askubuntu.com/questions/789017/…? If OP got their answer from @dufte but posted @dufte's answer as their own, that would be a little unfair.

@grooveplex Happens a lot

6:34 PM
So, it would be a lot of work for nothing?

@grooveplex did they mention where they got solution ?
If they did not that is plagiarism

No it isn't.

@Serg Nope. But @dufte left a comment 23 mins ago, OP posted answer 22 minutes ago

Answers shouldn't be posted as comments and, if they are, they are fair game. The OP did nothing wrong.

^ that

6:35 PM
If dufte wanted credit, they should have posted an answer. maybe this way they'll learn not to post answers as comments.

@terdon Really? I always post tiny answers as comments. I thought that was the right thing to do.

Ah, so it was a comment

I tend to post 'half answers' as comments if the comment leads to a better answer depending on circumstances
but eh

@grooveplex somebody can easily post it as their own

Once an OP had written a ditto answer of mine to his own post and accepted his own ans. but in this case terdon is right

6:36 PM
@grooveplex Nope. If it's a comment, you i) can't downvote it if it's wrong; ii) other users can't edit and improve it; iii) the answer is never marked as answered and iv) you don't get any rep/credit for it.

So answers go into answers section and comments go where they belong

Yes, as their definitions

Yup. If you don't have time to post an answer and instead just leave a comment, that's OK, but it means that anyone is free to take your comment and turn it into an answer.

Is putty available for Ubuntu?

@grooveplex yes it's in the repositories
though built in SSH is nicer, in my opinion
(I'm a command-line junkie - I eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, second dinner, and snacks)

6:39 PM
Okay. But I doubt if this asker here > askubuntu.com/questions/789013/no-ip-ssh-econnrefused < is using Ubuntu

@grooveplex this post sums it up nicely:
41
A: How to handle unanswered questions that have the answer in a comment or edited into the question?

WesleySteal comments that answer the question and post them as an answer. If it happens enough either the misguided commentators will be annoyed enough at the "lost" rep to give outright answers next time, or no one will notice / care and you'll help the community and... oh yeah, get some rep. BTW, I ...

Yup, putty is there, used it for serial connection. Though i prefer screen

Or they are much smarter than I am and they use PuTTY because of their super special requirements... but still..

@grooveplex Or they mention PuTTY was what they were trying to use but it's a completely different issue altogether
see my answer :P
i need coffee...
hmm... Amtrak has decent coffee...
... and I'm a Business Class rider... hmmmmmm free coffee.....
hmmmmm
back in a moment, need coffee :P

@ThomasW. Stop making me jealous with your coffee talk

6:44 PM
blah blah coffee blah coffee blah blah blah CAFFEINE blah COFFEE IS GOD blah blah blah

O. o

:P

(kerosene is red bull)

Kerosene ? I wouldn't wanna drink that

@Serg Me neither haha

6:46 PM
red bull is death

So it's father's day huh

coffee is better

Anyone know how I can replace `\/help\` with `/help` with JS replace()?
replace(/\/help\/g, '/help') doesn't work

o/ @Zacharee1

nor does /\\/help\\/g or /[\\/help\\]+/g
@grooveplex hi

6:49 PM
did you include your first argument in quotes if that's required?

@terdon regarding the fan... I remember when I had a laptop with poor cooling that would often get too hot. The mechanical hard drive inside got the worst of it. It would often climb above 60° C.

@Pilot6 I have tried both Software Center (before 16.04) and manually adding repo. Both work fine for me. I don't know what you saw.

@grooveplex the forward slashes at the beginning and end take the place of quotes
it has something to do with /g and replacing all matches

I think the temperature contributed to its early demise.

@terdon there's laptop standards with buildin fans by the way. Fairly decent prices toi
Too

6:51 PM
@NathanOsman Yup. This thing habitually runs at >60 C
@Serg I only need this on very hot days.

My current desktop has issues too but it has some room for performance tuning.
I've got the CPU underclocked.

@terdon maybe you should write a scrit that turns on that big fan once air temp us above certain limit

Heyyy Nathan is here :)

Sounds like a good raspberry project

Well, this is a ~6 year old laptop. I've changed the motherboard once (I had the same problem, called Dell tech support and said they need to change the thermal paste, they came and changed the entire mobo o_O), but should change the thermal paste again. It's been a few years now.
@Serg Or I could just press a button with my hand...

6:53 PM
Yeah. And I'm sure you've cleaned the dust out too.
That needs to be done every year or two.

Noooo, that's boring. Script all the things !!!!!!!

@terdon On very hot days? How hot is it outsides at your place? o.O

@NathanOsman Hi :) could you give me that link again ? that website associated with the "Show typing" tool. ...

@ByteCommander it gets to 40° C here in the summer.

6:54 PM
well
guess I'm not getting coffee until the conductor and the person running the cafe car here have a talk

You could use your fan to blow some of those °C over to Germany. I get cold feet here. :-/

@SeverusTux sure. One sec.

@ByteCommander It was about 35 degrees when I turned the fan on.

That animation was awesome.. hover mouse and lines move away :)
Thanks :)

6:55 PM
@terdon is it humid there?

Forecast.io claims it's 28 degrees outside now (21:56 at night)
@NathanOsman Not usually, no. Which is a good thing since >40 degrees is quite common.

It's crazy humid here.

@terdon Subtract 20 K and you get the temperature here. And subtract another 10 K and you get how cold my feet feel...

:)

@edwinksl i addressed that

6:56 PM
This is not a question.. askubuntu.com/questions/789034/…

@NathanOsman Yeah, that makes it unbearable. Be it cold or warm.

Or is it acceptable to ask questions that don't need answers?

aha
replace(/\\\/help\\/g, "\/help")

@NathanOsman which language did you use to do that ?

@grooveplex Vote to close as "Unclear" and comment that if they want to answer their own question they can post the "answer" to their own question and accept it later
if they change it, retract the close vote.

6:59 PM
@Serg thanks for keeping the peace ;)

now I just have to figure out why the auto scrolling only works once

@Zacharee1 Voting to close your question as unclear :-) Please add some more details to highlight exactly what you need :-)

@grooveplex ?

ah I was just kidding :)

@terdon The German radio news just mentioned the 40°C heat in Greece btw.

7:03 PM
@ByteCommander Good. Maybe that'll make some of you all come down and spend your money on ouzo! :P

Nah, I'll prefer olives and feta.

Good night every one :D ; echo "Good $(your time)"
bye

@SeverusTux the UserScript is in JavaScript and the server app is written in Go.

Bye Tux.

okay :) Thanks Nathan
I think i am addicted to AU O_o, Why am I not reading for the Algo exams tomorrow
bye .

7:07 PM
@ByteCommander Not a problem, we got those too! Just bring some nice sausages and beer. Lots of beer.

:D
I'm also not much into beer though...
\m/ (^_^) \m/
Enjoying this on the radio currently:

@ByteCommander Hey, I didn't say you should have any, I only told you to bring it!

7:17 PM
I actually got it working
auto-scroll is the problem now
one div works fine, but the other only works when I toggle auto scroll on
if any new text comes in, it doesn't scroll
ekjnwbvpwel;cav

@Zacharee1 Please convert it to a haiku. :P

@ByteCommander this aint cah

@Zacharee1 if you prefer elementary school level, you may also write an elevenie...

@Zacharee1 you should have posted your poem as one single message into chat, would have been easier to star

@Serg I can ask a mod :p
@terdon can you single-messageify my "poem"?
or just delete it

Well , if we're talking about poetic approach to programming . . . .here

@Serg o_O
why is the title in Spanish?

Because OP of that video speaks spanish ??

:p
@Rinzwind can you help with my JS problem?

I don't stalk people on youtube . . . only some of them

7:26 PM
stack?

@Zacharee1 depends if it is JS >:)

@Rinzwind uh
yes?
Go to x-p-w.tk/control.php, log in with temp and temp

jquery aint javascript ;=)

I don't think it's completely JQuery

and that is php >:)

7:27 PM
@Serg Good one, knew that already! :D

@Rinzwind and PHP pages can't have HTML or JS? Because you'll have to tell that to nginx :p

@ByteCommander let me find something you didn't know

@Zacharee1 a file ending on PHP should have PHP in it :+)

@Rinzwind and so it does, but it also has HTML and JS
@Rinzwind just go to it

7:28 PM
@Zacharee1 bleh :+) js should be in a js

@Rinzwind that doesn't work when it's changing elements on the page
I'm trying to give a live example of the problem

Happy padre day if there are any padres out there...

glad you didn't say papa day or Papa day

is there a papa?

Papa Roach ?

7:31 PM
papá == father, la papa == potato, el Papa == The Pope

@Serg = bot, confirmed
like Mitch, but with videos :p

Seth, I need to borrow someof your scripts to ban @Zacharee1

nu pls

:P

7:33 PM
Because @Zacharee1 is a JS and PHP bot :p keeps asking questions about that , even though half the chat told him not to use it

@Serg rolfmao that video

@Serg how else am I meant to dynamically replace content?

Dynamically ? uh . . .dynamite maybe ?
I dunno, I'm no JS or PHP guy

@Rinzwind can you please just take a look at the site? Turn on auto-scroll on the first box and put something in. Do the same with the other div.
@Serg the dynamite will be going to Colorado, primed and ready

O_o maybe I should change my address . . . .

7:35 PM
:}

@edwinksl check out this one

and then what?

See how the second div won't scroll when something new comes in?
Put in glist for the first and help for the second to make it more obvious

okay...
I am having a bit of a problem...
So I have a rpi that I can ssh into...
and I want to pull some files off it...
which I can do on Windows using WinSCP or whatever it is...
but I can't figure out how to do it on Ubuntu.

@TheXed cp file username:passwrd@ip:/dir/dir/file

7:38 PM
@Serg Don't reboot it, just patch, yeah!

I know...
But how...

@TheXed use scp
Or rsync

... and the file goes to another computer with "ip" adres

I mean i can do ssh pi@192.168.1.100
but that just brings up the command line

@Zacharee1 not seeing much difference :=)

7:40 PM
@Serg Already knew all of those three vids though. :)

@TheXed no that is for connecting. not for copying. use the one I posted above

@Serg GOLD

Oh I didn't see that...

@Rinzwind Putting in glist doesn't do anything?

@TheXed cp file pi@192.168.1.100:/dir/dir/file

7:41 PM
It doesn't look like you've even logged in

or cp file pi@192.168.1.100:/dir/dir/
i am :=)

turn on the auto-scroll switch for both and put in glist for the first then

@TheXed it has been a while since i've used my rpi but it would go something like this scp rpi_user@192.168.1.100:/home/rpi_user/file.txt /home/local_user/DESTINATION_FILE.txt

already did and the top one does not seem to scroll down :P

Isn't there a GUI method?

7:43 PM
@TheXed linux n00b ;-)

@Rinzwind I don't even see any history of commands

@Rinzwind no just lazy...

@TheXed good comeback :D

@Rinzwind nah, it really is the truth...

@Zacharee1 when I hit "on" the cursor goes down to end of the list on the top box
same on bottom

7:44 PM
yeah
now put in glist for the command
the white horizontal line is a textbox
put in help in the second one

and hit send? :=)

or enter

(did that a few times)
now for the q: glist AND help and enter. or glist enter and help enter?
(did both btw :D )

glist for the first div, help for the second

okay @Rinzwind I did this: cp file pi@192.168.1.100:/webcam/2016-06-19_1430.jpg

7:46 PM
send them

and it says no such file....

@TheXed 1st "file" needs to be your file to send ;-)

cp: cannot stat 'file': No such file or directory

not the word file

@TheXed -_-

7:47 PM
Oh...

this qualifies you as a noob :p

hmmm looks at previous sttmt >:)
@Zacharee1 did not want to say that :=)

wat

@Zacharee1 he being a n00b ;-)

yesh

7:48 PM
@Zacharee1 page reloads on both times I hit enter

it shouldn't

I quit...i will rdp into windows...

JS is meant to prevent that

it does :=)

oh come on, Firefox
well I gtg

7:49 PM
:D

lol
codeschool's DNR address is "hal@codeschool.com"

lol

new problem

In moments like these I'm reminded how much im screwed for the rest of my life. My lower back hurts again. I hope it's not a pinched nerve again.
