huh, since when is the os update notification not have an icon - nor have a way to get to the updater anymore...

Anonymous
@Mateo - Ubuntu? Software updater

yeah, it just shows a generic "updates avaible" have to go to the dash to open it
It used to have a app indicator as well

:-/

does it not spawn an icon in the unity launcher?

nope

12:31 AM
weird, it does for me :/

yeah, I've hit some kind of bug I guess

@Mateo clean 16 install, or 15 > 16 upgrade?

14.04 > 14.10 > 15.04 > 15.10 > 16.04 upgrade train ;)
oh well, seems like the worst thing that happened so far ;P
actually not sure why anyone is talking bad about 16.04, the upgrade went smooth, and is the best ubuntu yet

that's quite the train

Anonymous
I noticed that 15 > 16 kept the software center, when 16 has now just "Software" and a better app for it

12:34 AM
yep, have both

Anonymous
I hear no bad things about Ubuntu, other than slightly different experiences (like software store) between upgraders and clean installers.

But then again, I don't use unity :P

how do you run snaps
oo, fun
not in my path

Q: How to run a command in a snap package

Alejandro VeraI have read some tutorials about Snapcraft and snappy and I am really excited about it. I am using 16.04 and used snap find to find and install the ubuntu-calculator-app snap. But I don't know how to start it. It is neither in my Dash (Unity 7) nor in my path (using zsh) Also, I followed the i...

After it's done, I'll probably nuke default desktop and go with kylin desktop
My firefox isn't restarting tho

Lol

It's a big step, I've build up a lot of things on this system, shortcuts, scripts, meme config , etc
But i like kylin more and more, so i need to move on

Hello :D
Good $(Your_time)

Early evening here.
I'm carefully watching to see which moderator candidates are active right now - this is the really slow time.

@Serg Hi :D. Do you mean removing the default suspend and adding the custom suspend which gives warning ?
That is brilliant!!!
I will accept it :D

@Vishwa That looks like PHP
and I don't like PHP
PHP is terrible
and sending an HTML form value to JS to AJAX to PHP to JSON to NodeJS is even worse

2:53 AM
@Zacharee1 Hi :D ,
No PHP here ;) , Only Shell scripts

kk

any mod here ?
Ah... We have seth :)
@Seth --> askubuntu.com/a/788378/497359 is an unfinished version of another answer by same user
sorry for the unfinised answer — Aravinth don 45 mins ago

@Zacharee1 PHP variables would look like this: $myvar.

@NathanOsman and I should know that, but idc
I'm PHPed out

OMG !! I noticed sth, did you guys see those 2 answers ?

2:59 AM
Java variables would look like this:
public static void int bbq mVariableUsedForStorageOfASingleStringValueAndPossiblyAnEmptyString;

he is recommending installation of "Realteck Drivers" for Broadcam Network cards
Does it work ??

That's... not going to work.

okay.. there comes a DV and a comment
Hi HWHH :D

@Vishwa well, what i have in mind is a launcher entry that does that and a bit more. I am not very strong in programming GUI yet, so i cannot make indicator for the top panel, but launcher entry with such capabilities is very easy to achieve. I could do it tonight even

Next time if I want to suspend/shutdown i need to click on that launcher entry ?
I am thinking of posting a feature request on launchpad, would they solve it ?

3:16 AM
@Vishwa feature request is a very good idea. Let me actually make the launcher entry, show you how it will look and work, ok ?

okay :)
But... @Serg will it solve the real problem ? which is "Accidentally clicking on suspend when trying to shutdown " ?

@JohnAmbers No one replied to my PHP question I asked on Server Fault, so I decided to ask it on Gardening.se. — Zacharee1 21 secs ago
and VTC it too

Does anyone know how to make a feature request on launchpad ?

@Vishwa can you remove that?

@jokerdino You can.

3:23 AM
:( I am sorry

@jokerdino nao I knoz ur nem
huehuehue

@NathanOsman I know but I wanted him to make that conscious effort to do that.
But guess that 2 minute mark has expired.

@NathanOsman omg

Isn't he cute?

3:26 AM
Can someone help me .. I want to make a feature request for Unity on launchpad, But how do I do it ? just report it as a bug ?

Bluetooth 5 is out?
Supposedly doubles speed and quadruples range?

@Vishwa It will show the confirmation dialog , so even if you click on the wrong thing, you will know and won't suspend accidentally :)
@Zacharee1 I need another order for an icon , are you available ?

It's pretty late and I need to get up early tomorrow

@Zacharee1 alright, maybe next time then

I think I'm not avail until like 8 or 9 PM EST tomorrow

3:31 AM
That is alright with me

kk

@Serg I think I am missing something... So.. I will be warned when I click suspend on top panel (the default one) ? Or should I use the launcher item you are about to do in future to get warning message ?

@Vishwa here's what i am thinking of
Double click on that ubuntu icon will bring up shutdown dialog
Right clicking will give Suspend and Logout options
In the image above i have right clicked on it , so you can see the options
If you click on Suspend ( even accidentally ) it will bring up this Unity dialog
I sure can't do anything about the regular indicator in the top right corner, but i sure can make my own control of the session with the desired behavior

@Serg that chinese documents folder on your desktop xD

But... this is like a shutdown gadget , wont have any effect on regular indicator :(

3:39 AM
@edwinksl :) That's Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 , even with system language as english, some folders remain in chinese, which doesn't bother me at all
@Vishwa unfortunately , that's correct. I can't do anything about the regular indicator

you should just go full chinese ;)

I will have to change my habits.. :(

The feature request is the best i can suggest for changing the actual indicator

How do I make it ?
feature request ?
I have reported several bugs.. but not a feature request

@JohnAmbers No one replied to my PHP question I asked on Server Fault, so I decided to ask it on Gardening.se. — Zacharee1 24 mins ago

guys, let's be friendly.

Seth is actually right, we need to remain professional. Though we do need occasional dose of humor trolling

3:56 AM
good stuff
@Serg wow it's your script! askubuntu.com/q/788383/15003

@edwinksl yes it is, OP of that question came across my script but he want's a different feature - instead of just setting brightness when you use battery , the script must remember both battery and AC . . . and set the level only when change occurs
so yeah , slightly different type of behavior there
dangit ! the old bug came back, where i have abiword popping up by itself

Phew, first answer within 60 seconds!
Seems I am new here too.

Welcome

@Serg Thank you. ;D
Does this seem like a good answer to anyone?

A: Does Pentium 2 run with the i386 iso?

LifeCompleteSo with the HP notebook I would use a lightweight distro (Kubuntu,Lubuntu,MATE,etc) and yes, use the i386 iso edition. And regarding dust and stuff in your laptop I would rip apart the cover (NO DONT RIP IT) and just vaccum the insides... And for dual-boot or clean install, that is up to you...:D

any mods around?

4:04 AM
What's with the diamonds on people's names (some)?

@LifeComplete fairly decent answer , also got accepted by OP which is good.

okay

@LifeComplete those are mods , and you better not piss any of them off
jk

Seems like some special people..
LOL

Most mods here are friendly as long as you dont do bad juju

4:05 AM
juju?

stuff
it's just my way of talking

@Serg so they are passive?

@LifeComplete nope, quite the opposite . They review a lot of posts

Busy people, I shall admit!
Hold on, be right back

Bot it is, and its name is SmokeDetector. Says right there

A: Does Pentium 2 run with the i386 iso?

Nathan OsmanWikipedia to the rescue... "The Pentium II brand refers to Intel's sixth-generation microarchitecture ("P6")..." — source The P6 microarchitecture is sometimes referred to as i686. The Linux kernel and Ubuntu userspace are compiled against the i686 architecture, so in that respect, you...

I never thought I'd be answering a question about a Pentium II.

I don't think the OP has Pentium 2
I have heard of pentium dual core..

He was asked in a comment if he was confused and he insisted it was a Pentium II.
But yes, I too am skeptical.

Yup...
Now everyone thinks I answered a question made by someone called Edity, I am now that person

Hello EveryBody! :)

What silly people. :P

4:24 AM
I'm I the first to think that there is something strange about @LifeComplete?

nope

Hello Serg.

you are 5th person by now

@LifeComplete is @Edity-deleted- Confirm! :O

Hi , Henry. How's life ?

4:26 AM
@LifeComplete if you admit to doing it, I will let you off. Otherwise, it will hurt.

I am back and learnt how to be a less irritating human being.
I will now edit my profile details

I knew Mr LifeComplete Was edity.

Anyways
How was everyone after my 3 days of absence

@jokerdino can I join you and @edwinksl ?

Which room?

@NathanOsman he'll probably send an invite

hortstuI just upgraded from 14.04 to 15.1 and now when I start my laptop I end I up at the command line. I don't know what to do to get into the operating system I thought I was installing. My screen says: Ubuntu 15.10 inspiron tty1 Inspiron login : mike Password: Last login: Sat Jun 18 00:23:31 EDT ...

Nothing to see here

Made that feature request bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1593912 :) (hope this is how feature requests are made O_o )

I need a moderator

make it quick

@Vishwa i think that's the correct way. IIRC, @Videonauth did something very similar.

remove -deleted- from my name PRONTO

4:47 AM
Done

:D

@Vishwa do you still want me to post the launcher entry as a possible solution to your answer ?

Well, thats a nice workaround :D. please post

5:02 AM
@Serg are you posting it ?

@Vishwa already have :)

5:22 AM
Question is , should I change my power source monitoring script and turn it into version 2.0 or make it a separate script :/

C.h.i.p has been released!

9$ , amazing

5:38 AM
well that's . . . odd . . . my script keeps decreasing the percentage instead of keeping it the same
This is so bizarre !!!

whats the best mesa driver for a computer with amd kaveri?
or best driver?
anyone knows?

Wish I could answer that, but i am no driver expert

ok np and thanks
cinox is the expert on graphics right?

don't know him. I'd ask cl-netbox maybe

thats the guy I meant, yep
will ask him
gnight

5:47 AM
@Serg thanks :D

@Vishwa always glad to help. I will try to look for other options ,too , though i don't see many

@Serg But I have some minor issues with it., Its not responding properly :(
I have made a screen cast, Shall I send it to 1047481448 ??
@Serg

@Vishwa What exactly isn't responding ?
you can send it, sure

When clicked , Its blinking..
okay
message sent :)

@Vishwa ah, you mean the indicator itself ?

5:50 AM
yes

That's the usual behavior of any launcher item . It will blink until supposedly the program starts running. Unity launcher for some reason keeps blinking for scripts, probably because it's waiting for a window to pop up and eventually gives up

okay :D

Unity launcher can have a lot of potential , but at the same time some of it's behavior is very . . . .static :/
I'll see what can be done about it , this has been bothering me as well

:( qdbus has a very minimal man page

Yes, very minimal. It's basically a tool to issue dbus commands. By comparison it is much more easy to use than dbus-send
I use it a lot in my scripts

6:00 AM
Puh.. I envy your knowledge @Serg . you are awesome!
I need to learn all these

Thanks :) feel free to read through my other scripts , maybe you will find them useful for learning

@Edity Back?

this is the most bizarre bug in my scripts i've seen so far !!! I can't get why the brightness keep going down !

which script ?

This is supposed to be for this question : askubuntu.com/q/788383/295286
if you repeatedly plug and unplug the AC adapter, the brightness eventually will go down
it doesn't change only if it's at 100%

6:16 AM
@Serg Where is "on_ac_power" initialized ? Am I missing sth ?
what is its value
?

@Vishwa on_ac_power is a script that comes with ubuntu by default. You can do file $(which on_ac_power) in terminal and it will tell you it's a shell script :)

Oh... got it :)
# Returns 0 (true) if on AC power
# 1 (false) if not on AC power
# 255 (false) if can't tell
Same on mine :(

Yup, it's going down
On one of my laptops it goes slowly , but on the old Toshiba Satellite it goes down fast :/
hardware issue aside, the script itself has a problem , because it keeps going down :/

do you need double quotes around $BAT_PERCENTAGE and $AC_PERCENTAGE?

6:31 AM
@edwinksl no, double quotes are needed only if we have two words in a var and we want to avoid shell thinking they're separate. In this case we only have one value there. What is bizarre is that exact value from get_value gets set to the next lowerst percentage recognized by the graphics card. I'm gonna try something once i finish my smoke, see if that helps. If not, I'll just continue tomorrow
Yup, got it ! let me update the gist
Try it now , brightness shouldn't go down

hahaha

why +1 lol

Thats a genius workaround

Q: install OpenBSC

user175670I am installing OpenBSC.I just following http://openbsc.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/Building_OpenBSC (I am just Building libosmocore, Building libosmo-abis, Building libosmo-netif, Building OpenBSC and install library.) But when I tried to run OpenBSC,I encounter with this error(problem). user12@ubu...

But you still don't know what its decreasing ;-)
do you ?

6:43 AM
Well . . . on my Toshiba satellite the brightness isn't tuned exactly. If i say set to 90, it will set to 85. Anything from 86 to 90 will set it to 85
But 85 sets it to next lowest
which is 71
problem is that now this works for my old Toshiba satellite
New one is still not working properly :/
OHHHH, because i am using old script on the new machine hold on
i am such a dumdum

that's like the hardest bug ever
forgetting to use the debugged script ;)

well, Zach did say my brain was full of bugs . . . especially now, when my shoulder hurts and i am sleepy
What i don't understand is why such odd behavior - if I tell both machines set brighness to X, they will go to X-1
should i report this as a bug to the developers ? if only I knew for what package to report it for

@Serg does qdbus org.gnome.SettingsDaemon /org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen.SetPercentage "$1" and
your method mentioned here work as same ?
here :
Consider using /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness instead of trying to hard-code acpi_video0 into the script. It will allow for generalizing the path to file, which can be different - i for example have intel_backlight, not acpi_video0. That's what I've used in my script hereSerg Mar 9 at 19:41

@jokerdino should we keep this answer?
It was posted by the user that was deleted.
It isn't a very helpful answer anyway.

6:58 AM
but @Edity-deleted- has accepted it

@Vishwa Essentially, they work the same, however /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness file sets brightness value that is understood by the graphics card or backlight driver ( whatever reads that file ). For example, on my new machine the max value is 1490 with very fine steps , but on my old machine the max value is 7 . The qdbus method doesn't care - it uses percentage and it's all being calculated by the OS behind the scenes, so i don't need to write extra code if i use qdbus
@Vishwa OP and the deleted account are the same person :) there's a bit of fraud going on basically

Oops !
I tried "xbacklight -set 40" . But is not having any effect @Serg

I don't know a lot about xbacklight, but it's probably a bit outdated

There's also xrandr , you can do xrandr --output $SOME_MONITOR_ID --brightness $PERCENTAGE but it's not really doing anything on hardware level, it's just changing color of the screen so it appears less bright

7:03 AM
Uff... I tired that. Its ... changing the contrast
or sth like that

Yeah. And because it's software type of thing, it doesnt help save battery

I was afraid that sth is gonna happen to my Screen after seeing what it did

@NathanOsman done

Well, I probably should give OP the draft of my script to play with, see what they say

;D
@jokerdino can we close an answer ans "wrong answer, might do harm to OPs network card " ?

7:11 AM
how do I close an answer?

That probably fits into "rude or abusive" flag

Because in this , he is telling OP to install Realtek Drivers for Broadcam Network cards

or "in need of moderator attention"
