!! s/cloud/remote servers on the internet/

@ThatBrazilianGuy naw, they'd just use mind control rays in the remote servers on the internet (source)

something called the australian sex party?

@ThatBrazilianGuy s/cloud/but^2
I've heard of them
oddly enough
they're an actual political part of some sort

yeah so i discovered when i nervously entered the url....

Thank you so much for your help. I'll be looking into the solutions you've brought up in this discussion and I really appreciate your feedback and suggestions.

3:01 PM
sfw unless you have a badly coded web filter en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Sex_Party

sexparty.org.au Front page at least is SFW

@DavidPostill That's a link I'm not clicking at work, thanks

@ThatBrazilianGuy i had to!
its safe

@ThatBrazilianGuy Like I said "Front page at least is SFW"

in my early professional career i had to work on porn/prostitute websites
they are seriously grim

3:04 PM
@DavidPostill Still, not a nice address to show up on access logs ;p

clear the logs

I don't have access to the logs for the web browsing of the entire 50k+ personnel.
I don't even know where they are stored...
There are many, many IT sub-branches here.

@bwDraco I'll say it again "It's not something you research. That is distancing yourself. It is something you do. Take actions."

@DavidPostill Some of the solutions described in the earlier chat require substantial commitments.

@Burgi supposedly those are good money

3:08 PM
@bwDraco my suggestions let you get PAID for learning!

Burgi suggested taking on a customer service job.

yup
tech support isn't bad
teaches you patience

@JourneymanGeek ...which requires self-control.

@bwDraco chicken and egg

you'll learn that on the job

3:10 PM
yup

I'm hoping to implement something that doesn't require any major commitments such as a job outside my compsci field (beyond a bit of time and effort needed to do the work)

especially if you tell the CEO to f-off
well you need a job..... so....

I'll see if I can practice these skills in day-to-day activities such as housekeeping tasks and shopping trips.
I don't want this to derail my career plans.

are you actually sheldon cooper? ;)

@bwDraco I just wrote a message for you but apparently it's too long to send... wait, I'll split it

3:13 PM
@Rahul2001 Try multiple lines (Shift+Enter).

@bwDraco doing a tech support/customer service job won't impact you for very long

!!caat

@qwertyuiop, please keep it on topic.

if anything it will enhance your career
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

3:15 PM
@Burgi I'll bring it up with my career counselor, thanks.

you can get bar work in the evenings for pocket money

!!caaaat

@qwertyuiop That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: caat, caaaat, caaaaat
3

!!caaaaat

3:17 PM
Need to remember the order, it's 2-4-6

@qwertyuiop, seriously, you're derailing the discussion.
@qwertyuiop 2-4-5.

And dog is 8 and meercat is 10. I think

@Burgi did you work in a bar?

Someone corrupted Bob?

!!baroo

@bwDraco You can learn a martial art by dedicating just 3 hours a week. Find something less important in your life to give up.

@JourneymanGeek no i worked in KFC for 9 months then worked in a local shop for 12 months while studying
then i got the call centre job

@bwDraco I know that I'm really young and all that, but I'll tell you what I think anyways... not so long ago, I used to be a really awkward person- i used to take all the wrong decisions, not be empathetic when I should've, and used I not understand other people.
I used to worry too much about things that didn't matter and too less about things which did. How the condition improved is actually very interesting... this may come off as cheesy, but I swear it's the truth. last year, I started watching this particular TV show, and was awestruck by the protagonist - he was everything I wanted t

Not into martial arts, but can certainly dedicate as much as an hour a day towards my goals.

ahh
close enough

3:21 PM
I know a hot girl who works in a McDonalds, that's close enough to KFC right?

you wouldn't believe how grumpy people get when their fried chicken takes ages

I also know a hot girl who works in a bar and one who works in a Costa coffee but not KFC

Even the simplest things in life can make a big difference...

@Burgi Yeah and most of the time the server they're yelling at isn't the useless cook whose fault it is the chicken isn't ready

3:22 PM
@bwDraco its not the martial arts itself. Its the surrounding practices

@bwDraco Then learn Tai Chi. And most Yoga classes only last 1 hour.

@bwDraco no, actually limitless (tvmaze.com/shows/2473/limitless )

Ah.

Season 2 got cancelled unfortunately :(

based off a movie

3:26 PM
yep

@DavidPostill tai chi sounds like a good idea to me ;p

Oh I like NZT

:P

NZT is awesome
Does he show you how to make it?

@qwertyuiop They do show you a glimpse of the formula... I tried it and blew up my school's chemistry lab :/

3:33 PM
@Rahul2001 Noob. Everybody knows you don't make drugs in school

@qwertyuiop that image isn't loading... (unless it's the image of a loader)

@Rahul2001 Are you sure? Have you tried refreshing?
It's showing fine for me!

yeah

Sure it isn't loading or sure it's the image of a loader?

Sure it isn't loading unless it is the image of a loader, in which case I hate you

3:42 PM
:D

Bob
@allquixotic @JourneymanGeek just played a small game as advent... those strike craft/drone hosts are strong. they just... wipe out everything in the gravity well.

!!iddqd

@qwertyuiop That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

Bob
3:44 PM
but it's hard to build up to it without the trading spam TEC can do

@Bob how have you never gamed with me :-(

Bob
I wonder... if we had one TEC player who focuses on credits and gives it all to an advent player to build a giant drone fleet :D
@qwertyuiop time zones? haven't known you that long yet? idk

@Bob We've known each other for years!

Bob
0.6 years, to be exact :P

Oh
@Bob @Bob We've known each other for tenths of years!

Bob
3:47 PM
lol

@Bob you remember when you first chatted?

Bob
vaguely
might've been during the '12 win8 challenge

@Bob I meant when you first chatted with @qwertyuiop

Bob
oh. uh.
I remember a rather weird argument

the client visiting us is cute....

3:49 PM
@Burgi Pics or it didn't happen

;p

thats not professional ;)

Talking about the attractiveness of your clients on a public internet chat room isn't either

Hi ! I am absolute Linux beginner, and have a short question.
I have installed Open R on my machine (statistical analysis software), it is Running fedora.

https://mran.microsoft.com/documents/rro/installation/#tab-71ZvQby6Z-1

However, after install and trying to run it, I am getting the following error:

/usr/lib64/MRO-3.2.5/R-3.2.5/lib64/R/bin/exec/R: error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so.50: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Would appreciate if someone could give me a hand

So now that we've cleared that hurdle, pics, or it didn't happen

3:53 PM
@newprint hey...

Bob
@newprint try asking on Super User, and double-check you didn't skip a step. You're following CentOS/RHEL instructions, make sure you actually have the correct OS (and supported version) installed.

@Rahul2001 Fedora is upstream Redhat which is basically upstream CentOS

Bob
Oh, missed the bit where he mentioned Fedora. *shrug*

Or more succinctly, Fedora is Red Hat Beta and CentOS is Red Hat Free Edition

hm...
Microsoft stuff doesn't work on linux... big surprise

3:57 PM
@Rahul2001 I was more surprised when they made Windows come with built-in Linux

@qwertyuiop this is acceptable
as long as i don't say it outloud

So mute your shutter sound then

fedora is pre-redhat, and centos is post-redhead

Bob
@Rahul2001 I'm sure it works fine when installed on an actually supported version, y'know.

@Rahul2001 I have followed all the directions carefully (For Fedora/CentOS)
Installation seems to be fine (had no errors during install)

[root@localhost /]# sudo find ./ | grep libicuuc.so
./usr/lib64/libicuuc.so.54
./usr/lib64/libicuuc.so.54.1

4:00 PM
bye guys...
gotta go and study

!!Does Rahul2001 gotta go study

@qwertyuiop All signs point to yes

@newprint Please ask a question on the main site.

Bob
@newprint You need .50, you have .54

Huh. Alrighty-then.

4:01 PM
@Rahul2001 Yeah don't let the internet hinder your studies

Bob
Either install the correct version or use an OS that has the correct version.

I feel like such a dirty Apple fanboy with my iPhone connected to my Macbook Pro with a lightning to USB cable

@ThatBrazilianGuy Wrong response :)

Bob
!!foxno

@allquixotic are you in starbucks as well?

4:05 PM
@Burgi I wish

!!foxyes

not fan boy enough then

@DavidPostill I don't know what you are talking about... ;p

FWIW I've found immense use in my Macbook Pro as a means of doing proof-of-concept work on a cross-platform thingy at work
even though it's a personal Macbook Pro, I can now say "X is possible" with authority because I've tested it

4:06 PM
@allquixotic I pictured you as a PC and Android person

instead of being another useless guy who goes "I don't know...."

@ThatBrazilianGuy You added the same sequence as I did ... before you sneakily changed it ...

@allquixotic aaaaah

@ThatBrazilianGuy Let's see: I have a server running SmartOS with a Windows VM and an emulated Linux container (LX branded zone); I have an iPhone and an Android KitKat cheapo phone (though I mostly use the iPhone); I have a Windows 10 Micro ATX desktop that dual-boots Ubuntu; I have a Macbook Pro; a Windows tablet that's broken; an outdated Windows laptop that dual boots Windows 10 and Ubuntu; a FireOS Amazon tablet; and my work machines run Windows 7.
so that's Solaris-based OS, Windows Server, Windows client, Linux on the server, Linux on the desktop, iOS, Mac OS X, and Android - am I missing anything?
I guess I don't run BSD anywhere, but meh

Bob
Depends whether you want to count OS X as a BSD...

4:09 PM
I'm not a fanboy; I run everything
except GNU Hurd - I haven't installed that or tried it in almost a decade
oh and equipment I originally purchased for myself that has been handed down to family and still in use: a Windows 10 Surface Pro "1", and a second-generation Nexus 7.

Bob
@allquixotic Don't know if you look at past pings -- I tried out advent, it was interesting :P
Very different playstyle from TEC

@Bob yeah, they're basically the culture faction
though their mobile starbases gives them an interesting advantage in defense

Bob
@allquixotic Even ignoring culture, they have a lot more attack power
their bombers are especially devastating
@allquixotic Mobile starbase is vasari

also I think some of their capital ship abilities are OP - it might be the Discord-class battleship/dreadnought that has some kind of ridiculous shield buff
I've learned to focus fire Discord ships first

Bob
Advent is basically very very strong strike craft

4:13 PM
that's why I never fire at titans first in a battle against the Advent... I always fire at the Advent capital ships
their abilities are very powerful and they're fragile and easy to kill with a few dozen kodiaks, a titan and a few capital ships of my own

Bob
20-30 drone hosts will wipe out a fairly heavily defended gravity well without intervention

heh, I imagine the vasari mobile starbase is very powerful drone host counter... just move to where the drone hosts are and shoot them

Bob
wile staying completely out of range of any static defences, TEC starbases included
Oh, Advent has a lot of multi-target ships too...

also, gravity wells come in different sizes; really small gravity wells can literally be coated in point defense, gauss cannon and starbase firing arcs where you can't move your drone hosts anywhere to escape the static defenses

Bob
Illuminator and Solanus, fly them right into the middle of the enemy fleet/defences respectively and they'll spew fire in all directions

4:15 PM
big gravity wells are harder to defend because you'll inevitably have holes
I hate the Solanus - granted, its individual projectiles are WAY weaker than Ogrov torpedoes, but it can take out many smaller defensive structures at the same time
Solanus is a counter to my strategy of 3 repair platforms backing 2 starbases
because they can fire on the starbases and the repair platforms at once

Bob
@allquixotic It smashes up gauss platforms pretty well. Ogrovs (or drone hosts) are better against starbases

when the AI hit me with Solanus I had to bring my fleet back to shoot them down
yeah, Ogrovs are the best anti-starbase ship in the game obviously
but probably weaker against gauss spam, or at least it'd take them a lot longer to kill 20 gauss platforms than solanus adjudicators

Bob
Actually, Solanus has a really hard time taking out a fully upgraded starbase backed by hangers
Need a lot and lose a lot of them
Drone hosts work better there

yeah, bombers are probably the correct counter against solanus if you don't have a fleet there
obviously if you have a fleet you roll heavy cruisers and pop them easily
or Marzas

Bob
Speaking of, the Advent starbase is pretty amazing for culture spread but not much good for planetary defence :P

4:18 PM
Advent starbase? yeah

Bob
I do like the auto names though
Purity, Divinity, Sanctuary, Vindication

TEC have the best starbases in terms of sheer stats and durability (and income); Advent have the best culture starbases; and Vasari can move

Bob
@allquixotic I need to figure out a good counter to those strike craft when playing as TEC
Gardas don't cut it
lol. Vasari: "we can move!"

@Bob you might want to try the Dunov's magnetize ability; it will literally crash multiple squads of strike craft into an enemy frigate/structure/cruiser/capship/titan and deal damage to both, mostly hurting the strike craft
you can outright destroy a frigate with its shields down with Magnetize if a lot of bombers hit it
but it only tickles titans and starbases
you can't use Magnetize if the enemy has no targetable non-strike-craft units in the gravity well, though -- and it can't target planets
it can only target actual ships and structures

@allquixotic Macs are really overpriced, which is the only reason I don't buy one

4:22 PM
They're not quite as bad anymore

@Rahul2001 I hear that a lot, but it's not very true

Bob
@allquixotic o.o
I generally don't use abilities much because they aren't much good unless you micro them
But I might have to look into that

obviously they cost more than it'd cost if you went to Shenzhen, China and bought the raw components and soldered them and glued them together manually

they are VERY expensive for laptops but the build quality is excellent

but the premium is only like, $100 on the low end, and $200 - $250 on the high end

4:22 PM
@allquixotic in India, they cost like 3 times an HP with the same specs

@Rahul2001 I don't think HP has the same specs as a Macbook Pro anymore, because of the PCIe SSD... will have to check on that though

Bob
@Rahul2001 Depends if you're looking for raw specs or for the build as well.

last I checked the latest MBP SSD is the king of speed in the laptop arena, short of multi-thousand-dollar PCIe add-in cards

Bob
Macs are still more expensive, though. There are many non-Mac laptops with similar build quality for cheaper.

I benched ~1400 MB/s

4:24 PM
There are many non-Mac laptops with similar or worse build quality and cost more

@Bob actually, I only care about the battery, display, and performance while coding

you want to know what's a ripoff? fucking Alienware

Bob
Macs cost a bit more, are almost never on sale, but have very low depreciation. They can be resold for a good chunk of the purchase price many years later.

@qwertyuiop fair enough

@allquixotic Nah

Bob
4:24 PM
Oh god I'm defending Apple products...

@qwertyuiop Ya, it does go both ways.

go away Apple

btw, my GTX 1080 is coming \o/
as far as software goes, though, purely going on what's actually available and not paying any mind to things that aren't available on the platform, I FAR prefer OS X over Windows... it just looks so much nicer... and it's extremely fast and never have to worry about drivers
the only reason I ever use Windows is that (1) OS X doesn't run on high-end PC hardware (or at all, legally), and (2) it runs a lot of software that will not run on OS X

@qwertyuiop me want too

Bob
shrug I've not had to worry about drivers on Windows for ... quite a while
Though, the custom drivers tend to include additional controls that aren't always built-in.
It always comes back to the GPU and printers.

@Bob when I got my new motherboard I had to manually update the Skylake Z170 chipset drivers to get USB fully working, and SMbios for temperature monitoring was a custom gigabyte.com download

Bob
But there's decent generic printer drivers as of... Win8?

4:30 PM
@qwertyuiop not available in India 👿👿👿👹

Bob
@allquixotic Odd :\

@Rahul2001 Or the UK

I didn't change out the GPU though so thankfully it booted right up and basically worked out of the box, even though the OS was a block level copy from an Ivy Bridge box

Bob
I literally just installed Windows (7|10) and off I go. Except Win7 didn't have USB 3.0 support at all.

I had to reboot like 3 times to get Windows to activate and stay activated on the new CPU though :P
now my new CPU is registered as a Windows 10 licensee, yay
should make it easy to upgrade if and when they go to a subscription based model or some shit
I'm sure Microsoft is just salivating at the prospect of getting $9.99/month out of every Windows 11 Pro PC and $7.99/month out of every Windows 11 Home PC
or, if Windows literally becomes freeware in the future, then your personal data and habits becomes your payment method

Bob
4:33 PM
*shrug* I'll worry more about that if it actually happens.
Meanwhile Google is already actively and openly using private data to serve personalised ads.

they should just have a menu when you install...
Please select your payment method:
Mandatory spying on everything you do ($0.00/month)
Some data collection but not intrusive, plus license fee ($3.99/month)
We won't phone home at all, ever ($12.99/month)

Bob
But Google is also big enough to be basically unavoidable, and honestly the effort of moving off gmail turns out to be rather high.
Then there's those Facebook et al. 'share buttons' that include tracking. Joy.

@Bob I stopped using Gmail

!! s/share/spy/

4:35 PM
No big deal

@allquixotic Then there's those Facebook et al. 'spy buttons' that include tracking. Joy. (source)

@Rahul2001 What are you using instead?

Bob
@Rahul2001 Good for you.

vmail ;p

Bob
You also probably don't have about a hundred (probably more!) accounts and subscriptions linked up to it... yea...

4:36 PM
@DavidPostill my own domain with webmail

that's MY problem lol
disconnecting my life from Google's SMTP server is basically a no-go

Took some determination but I managed to switch :p

@Rahul2001 you're also, like, 6
we're grown adults with EVERYTHING connected to our emails in one tangly spaghetti spider-web of never-ending suck
(I was kidding btw, I know you're like 15 - so much older wow)

👻💀💀💀

Bob
I've had proper hosting under a private domain for a while now, but every time I look at shifting more I'm reminded I get 20+ emails a day from various senders :S

4:38 PM
I guess I'm lucky I did it early then

I think it would take me like a full month of dedicated effort to switch everything off of sending emails to my @gmail.com address

Bob
Heck, I don't even like my gmail address and I've had one under my actual name for half a decade but even switching to that was too hard!

Lol

Bob
@allquixotic You'll never achieve 100% switchover either... there'll always be the odd person/service that still has the old address :\
So permanent redirect it is!
Also, if you've ever 'logged in' with Google (oauth, etc.), you're screwed.

how so?
oh right
I've done that dozens of times

Bob
4:40 PM
Funnily enough, I think SE's the only place I've done that, and it might be the only site that lets me associate alternative login methods.
@allquixotic You can't add other login methods on most sites, so it's either keep the Google login or make a new account
Or argue for weeks with their support, I suppose

true
and if it's Microsoft support you just don't bother lol

Bob
oh god !!no
@allquixotic Good luck even finding the support contact.

@Bob I let the less important stuff/guys use the old one... they have to wait like a week for a response

Bob
Though, I think MS subscription / account support is getting better. Maybe. Thanks to @Sathya's alter ego :P

@Bob I've seen sites that don't even let you change your email address. At all.

4:43 PM

Bob
@Rahul2001 Heh, even you have that problem. Now imagine if you've used that gmail account for several years longer, plus as an adult (lots more subscription services)...

"Between my hands are all the tech support people I'm going to hire to make our support awesome!"

@allquixotic Charles Xavier?

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Yeaaaaaa... Nexon was one of them

@ThatBrazilianGuy No @Sathya Nadella ;p
we joke that @Sathya is the CEO of Microsoft

4:44 PM
Well, Sathya is the CEO of Microsoft...

Bob
2007, I created a MapleStory account w/ a bugmenot email address. ~2009, they implemented email verification and I discovered bugmenot email was discontinued. ~2011 they finally implemented email changing, but you needed access to the old address (of course). This was after I spent the last two years asking them every few months. ~2012 I finally got them to let me change the email address.
Nexon support had response times measured in months. Seasons, even.
Send a message, wait 6 months.

@Bob Oh, they outsource to the Brazilian legal courts. I see.

Lol

Nexon... they made that awesome game Sugar Rush that got discontinued before it made it out of beta :(

Nexon sounds like a transnational Captain Planet villain oil company

not Sugar Rush by Disney
and WTF ever happened to Hellgate: London, anyway? that was such a fiasco.
my dad was tempted to buy the "cereal box edition" - not literally called that, but there was a collector's edition that came in what looked like a cereal box sized... well, box.

@allquixotic Ooh, those old boxed games.
I think I still have a Myst box somewhere.

@Bob AAAARRGHH!!! STOP STALKING ME!!

"old boxed games" it's crazy to think I haven't purchased a physical copy of a game in like 5 years

Bob
@allquixotic Heh, even then they haven't had those boxes for at least a good decade. 5 years ago would've been the slim DVD cases, yea?
O_O Homeworld is downloading a 5 GB update?!
I haven't even played the thing
2.0? :S

@Bob MOAR PIXELS edition?

4:52 PM
@allquixotic I don't think I ever bought a physical copy of a game (does those CDs sold in magazines count?)
