it's late afternoon to the point of being called evening
well, it's only 3:30
yeah, evenings start after 6 pm for me.
Exactly
maybe it's evening for Bob.
Hmm. "According to Indian culture,here in India,we say" good afternoon" to any person when the time in clock is 12.00 p.m. till 3.00p.m. and "'good evening" when the sun is going to set (approximately 5.00pm. onwards till 7.00pm."

I don't know about that.
So what do you say between 3PM and 5PM?
Maybe I should stick to this culture that you speak of.

You were looking for this a while ago IIRC
After a largely bright start, Tuesday will see some very warm sunshine. Showers will develop though and these will be heavy in places with possible torrential downpours, hail and thunder. It will feel humid into the evening too. Maximum Temperature 25 °C.

It's the permissions that are applied for whoever created it, but they're never updated.
...ugh, I can't explain
Ok. Say you set some CREATOR OWNER permissions on a folder, that applies to files inside it, yea?
When someone creates a file, it whoever creates it gets those permissions, assigned under their user account.
CREATOR OWNER only adds those upon creation; they're not really inherited live
It's like a umask in *nix
Essentially its the files that are created under a specific users context?
Yup yup?

Q: What does the "Fi" in "Wi-Fi" mean?

Strict workplace?
oh
@JourneymanGeek My workplace is anything but strict. Sometime I come to work in sandals and short pants ;p
14:07
@ThatBrazilianGuy Local issues?
@bwDraco meh, his reason is good enough
Missed it. It's private information.
yeah. I needed to ask, I did, I understand the reason, Its handled.
This is why I can't be trusted to be a mod. If only...
Also: Is there something I can do with my lack of a sense of humor? In some situations (including dispute resolution), I could come across as very cold for this reason (even if I can fully avoid making incorrect moderation decisions due to emotion or otherwise).
This alone may be a contributor to the issues I'm having here.

Damn, I just spotted a typo of mine
@bwDraco a sense of humour, and the ability to decide when to de-escalate is pretty hard to learn
> Sometime I come to work
@JourneymanGeek Guidelines?
I've never really had someone teach me the skills I use as a mod here
14:17
Me workplace tarzan. Me sometime come to work.
I don't think it's unlearnable...
@bwDraco its tacit knowledge
Can you teach anything about it?
Examples, guidelines, role-play?
I can't really define these things
@JourneymanGeek I think it's hard to learn as in being formally teachable, but can be developed by exercising.
14:17
only when someone punches you for being an arse
Perhaps we can do some role-play here for training purposes...
( Í¡° ͜ʖ Í¡°)
@Burgi I think moderation's closer to aikedo, than a bar fight
That might require too much effort on your part and even if done would belong in a new room as it would potentially disrupt the main chat.
@bwDraco Are you sure you have no sense of humor? ;p
14:19
You're basically trying to redirect the 'negative' things
there's a few situations where you need to use force but that's rare
@JourneymanGeek the diplomacy skills are transferable though
@Burgi how does someone define diplomacy as I do it though?
Being negative helps no one. I have this tendency to prefer completeness over quickly resolving disputes.
I act according to the situation.
This will be changing.
@bwDraco thing with quickly solving a dispute is, one moves on
(actually, the term I use mentally, is 'tai chi' in the "lazy person avoiding work" sense)
@ThatBrazilianGuy yoda would have made a shit moderator
Obi-wan on the other hand...
The issues with my behavior and how I attempt to moderate are deeply rooted in my personality and changing that would require an extraordinary amount of time and effort with no guarantee of success. Perhaps as you said a while ago, this is nature and not nurture...
@JourneymanGeek Say that, why do you? hmmmmmmmmm
@ThatBrazilianGuy yoda's too indirect?
Works for some mods
@JourneymanGeek i probably mean empathy
14:22
but I prefer a more direct approach
@Burgi that's nature, isn't it
can one learn empathy?
@JourneymanGeek Could be worse...
@JourneymanGeek It's something that requires a personality change. Not impossible, but extremely difficult and time-consuming.
@ThatBrazilianGuy JAR JAR FOR MOD!
i used to be like @bwDraco, i like to think i have learnt empathy and tact (both are required by diplomacy)
14:23
@Burgi I've not learnt either.
;p
Oddly enough, I didn't find that funny.
Which is why I find it so hard to explain the underlying skills
@JourneymanGeek your trolling me now
;)
This might be why I'm not going to be a good community builder. I'm too impersonal.
@Burgi they're implicit things
I've always been somewhat empathic. To the point where I tone it down a little
tact... I donno, I tend to think of myself as super direct
14:25
I have terrible interpersonal skills.
Even more so when dealing face-to-face
I've spent the better part of a decade trying to understand these issues and I feel that with you around I've learned some big lessons, but absent a major breakthrough, I have serious doubts that I can deliver the changes I promised in that open letter within any reasonable timespan, if at all.
I do think one handy skill is simplifying problems
break it down, throw out the stuff you don't need
That's easy to explain
@bwDraco i honestly think you should go watch how the staff in department stores deal with people
I have to say thank you for all the effort you've put in to help me become a better person. It's gotten me very far.
I guess there's no substitute for experience but I can try to behave in that manner...
or a bar on a friday
14:28
I can at least try to do this even with no recent experience as I do understand the requirements even though I have not seen it first-hand in a while or paid attention to it.
@Burgi my social skills IRL are not that good, outside my 'element'
i certainly couldn't work in a bar, i'm too shy and quiet
Ah well. Might be a lost cause that I should just give up on. The job requires a different personality than mine, and general consensus is that personality changes don't happen under normal circumstances.
i did work in a customer services call centre for 6 years which helped massively
@Burgi Did it take you six years to make the bulk of your improvements, or just a few weeks or months on the job?
14:30
I'd also point out, I don't typically want to be a mod
probably about 2 years
Odd as it might sound
Wow. I guess there's still a long road ahead of me, especially because I'm not presently employed to do anything like this and hence not under any pressure to make these changes.
> those who seek out power are exactly the wrong type of people for the job
@Burgi pretty much
14:33
@Burgi My heart and soul lies in the bettering of the community and I have expressed fears in the past that if given power, I would abuse it.
@bwDraco you wouldn't last long if you did.

I keep forgetting the role of moderators as "human exception handlers", and I fear I might commit abuse as a mod.
> Quis custodiet ipsos custodes
14:34
@bwDraco You shouldn't expect the changes to happen, and then place yourself on a position where these traits are important: You should be placed where the skills are necessary, then it will force you to develop it.
Pretty much as a person in a foreign country learn the language waaay faster.
Mar 30 '15 at 7:25, by DragonLord
I'm worried that my recent conduct and attitude can ultimately lead me to commit this sort of abuse if and when I get the diamond.
@bwDraco well, being able to let go/forget the stuff you did after you did it, unless its important
> Who will guard the guards themselves?
I'd go nuts if I remembered every single thing I've done as a mod

I always forget the human on the other side. Thanks.
Definitely worth pinning.
14:38
hence my comments to go work in a shop/bar for a bit
I do feel for the folks who are constantly sitting on the streets, begging for money.
you cannot avoid the humans
@Burgi The guy who really wanted to be the building manager for the place where I live, turns out not only he skipped 6 months of paying taxes, he also collected the money from his roommates and told them he was paying everything just fine.
I've seen a texting conversation where he said he was not paying so he could throw me out and become the next building manager.
I wonder why... /s
14:40
The real issue is that I'm just too combative and impatient. Both of these can be addressed with adequate self-control, but again, this would take several years more effort on my end.
@bwDraco its worth remembering you can lost a battle and win a war
Meanwhile, I hate being the building manager and have been trying to "fix all the holes" so I can step out with everything in great shape.
Nine years of work towards improving my behavior, and it seems I'm just getting started.
@bwDraco try yoga or a self defense martial art
how old are you @bwDraco?

during one of my class assignments, my group mates and I had a disagreement on presentation styles. theirs was terrible. I told em I'd handle my own slides. They changed it, and swapped me out. I told them I disagreed, that I'm not going to interfere in that since my opinion wasn't really needed, but I'm obviously glad to do anything else.
@Burgi I advised both of those 6 months ago :/ Along with meditation ...
@Burgi Early 20s (just finished a MS in Computer Science)
I coulda argued, and the presentation was shit. I still got my grades, and got a generally positive outcome.
@bwDraco go work in a bar!
The ability to let go is handy
14:43
you'll learn when people are pissed off
So the consensus is that while these skills are clearly improvable, I need to do something specific that demands these skills to improve them. It seems I can't just learn them on my own time.
plus its a good way to meet girls...
Oh well. I'll see what I can do about it.
I'll be in talks with my parents and counselors on this matter and hope to see some improvements over the coming months.
@bwDraco That's how I see it (well, maybe not "can't be learned on your own time", just it's harder that way). Although I suppose meditation and yoga could help. Not a practitioner myself, but I've heard good things about both.
Mar 1 at 17:04, by DavidPostill
@bwDraco One last piece of advice. Please read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. "The book is intended to be a self-help guide for day-to-day living and stresses the importance of living in the present moment and avoiding thoughts of the past or future."
Jan 21 at 9:22, by DavidPostill
@bwDraco You clearly know what you think you have to do - now go and do it ;)
14:46
I'll be designing some new behavioral goals to this end and will explicitly try to make some improvements in day-to-day activities.
I guess I've been approaching the problem wrong the whole time.
@bwDraco as per the fermi problem solving technique...
I think the 'root' issue you have is overthinking or underthinking.
i think you are going wrong by treating this as a computing project
You overthink long term things
then underthink when you take action
Mar 1 at 16:13, by DavidPostill
@bwDraco My intuition says that the biggest issue you need to address is your "expectations" of yourself (and whether you are imposing them on yourself or whether they are imposed on you).
@Bob I meant it is hardly NSFW in my opinion.

I don't have a clue what's going on here
.-.
Too much time away from this place
Learn to think about the other person. It's not exactly hard to do but it can take some time to form a habit.
That's empathy and I will likely realign behavioral goals to this end.
Self-control (as promised in the open letter) is a natural requirement of this and will improve naturally as I work on empathy.
Are we talking about how power corrupts and makes @Bob delete messages he sends me?

If you're here often, you may be aware that I have a history of emotional instability resulting in multiple instances of disruptive behavior that ultimately led to a suspension. I took this opportunity to better understand the nature of this issue and it turns out I've been making this much more difficult than this needed to be.

For historical reasons, I had defined my behavioral goals in terms of being a gentleman. Among other things, this meant staying calm and never losing control of myself no matter the circumstances. This ambitious
