5:10 PM
@DavidZ Sorry. I had to go. I need to sleep. Thank you because of your attention and time. Good luck.

@BernardMeurer did you check quest? I'd do it now.

@3075 Czecking
We have received your application, but no decision has been made yet.
RIP

hmm
don't worry like I said it's because you applied late.
and they said 7 weeks processing time for international admissions.
should be less than that though.

The tension though
I'd be so happy to get into Waterloo
my life would be so much easier :p

lol, you'll get in dw.
i'm still waiting for uoft.

5:20 PM
@3075 ::hugs::
@DanielSank I NEED YOUR HELP
I have that interview monday
and I think I'm getting sick
what do I do?
What do I eat?

@BernardMeurer Next time you all-caps me, I'm mailing you a slap to the face.
<3
First of all, don't panic. Get some chicken and rice and sleep a lot.
2
If you can, get some zinc tablets. They supposedly actually help get over common viruses faster.

@DanielSank Sorry :p
Alright I think I have chicken and rice
And I've been getting almost no sleep so I'll fix that

@BernardMeurer Dude. Ok, please listen to me very carefully.
At this stage in your life, when you're about to go to college, you have one major enemy... one thing that can make or ruin you: sleep.
You will be tempted again, and again to give up sleep in the name of getting some assignment done, or going to some social interaction.
In isolation, missing sleep isn't all that terrible, but it tends to turn into a habit, and then you are totally, utterly fucked.
In fact, going short by an hour or two of sleep even once will reduce your ability to think and act well by a lot more than you might think.
...and you get sick.

It's a habit to me, I get about 6 hours of sleep a night :/

@BernardMeurer If there's one thing you can do to make yourself get more stuff done in your life and be happier, it's to sleep enough.
I know that I need 9 hours. If I get 8, I'm ok, but definitely not on the top of my game.
Some people need way less. Everyone's different.
Another thing that happens is when you're tired your brain tells you to give it sugar, so you crave junk food. This has obvious bad consequences.

5:29 PM
I swear I try to go sleep at around midnight
but then I open a page about a bug at IBM in 1983

Yeah, this is a common problem.

and yeah, three hours later I'm getting linux installed on a potato to check on something I read there
and it's the end of sleeping early

1. Set an absolute time to get in bed. Do not negotiate with yourself.
2. Do *not* bring a phone/tablet/whatever into bed. If you can, don't have a TV or computer in your bedroom.
3. Stop working an hour before bed, and read a book or something else like that.
^ Good advice
2
@BernardMeurer Believe it or not, those hours at night spent installing Linux on a potato actually make you get less done overall because you don't perform as well the rest of the time.
At least, not if you have to get up to go to classes, etc.

Alright, I'll try and get my sleep schedule back on track. And the junk food thing is true now that I think of it
when I get little sleep I eat so much crap
which is everyday
then I feel bad and bike more
and get more tired and eat more crap
I'm living in an ackermann function halp

@BernardMeurer university interview?

5:35 PM
I wasn't kidding at all. In college time management, and sleep management in particular, is a huge factor in success.

@3075 TL;DR: College is expensive; Brazilian billionaire has a foundation that gives scholarships for Brazilian students going abroad; ultra super competitive; 6-phase selection process; I got to phase 5 which is a panel Monday at São Paulo (I live in Rio); Life changing opportunity, very nervous, very worried

oh I see lol
gl :D

@DanielSank "One potato with linux over bed time could be two potatos with linux in the morning" is my new motto

@BernardMeurer Good luck.

@3075 @dmckee Thanks!

5:39 PM
All the things the DS says about sleep are true. And while you can force your way through a week on very little if you have to it takes it's toll. It will eat into your fitness, degrade you focus and memory until you get caught up, and tends to cause unhealthy weight gain.
It gets harder to force through it as you reach middle age and the consequence hit sooner and harder.
So establish the right habits while you are young.

@dmckee the DS

@dmckee I believe it, it's just so hard to stop and go sleep once you are knees deep into that bug you've been working on for hours now
@3075 lol

I sleep for 13 hours a day.

@3075 Holy crap, how?

my first class is in period 3 which is at 12, and I sleep at 11 normally.

5:44 PM
I just instantly wake up at 9AM
Idk what happens
My brain is just like "NOPE"

my alarm is for 7, so I wake up and brush my teeth and sleep again for a few hours.

Wat hahaha
why do you do that?

because I don't have anything better to do with my life for now.

@3075 Have you considered installing linux on your shoe?

@BernardMeurer how does that work?

5:49 PM
@3075 get a raspberry pi zero, get linux on it, implant it on your shoe with a battery and a bluetooth module, get some sensors in and idk
do something with that :v
I'm fairly positive you can make a potato-powered potato running linux

"First quantization is a mystery, but second quantization is a functor"
heheheh

@Slereah What's a functor?

It's a function between categories

Categories?

user116211
@BernardMeurer yeh.... it's damn taking too much time ;/

6:00 PM
it's a group-like algebraic structure i think @BernardMeurer

@MAFIA36790 I know :/
@Obliv Ah, I see

I'm learning groups now. I have to do 30 more exercises to move onto the next section. Sometimes I wonder if it's even worth doing all the exercises qq

user116211
@Obliv o-O

user116211
Why don't you deem it worthy?

well some people say working through every exercise in a text is time not spent efficiently. I think that I learn something new in almost every exercise though so I'm going to keep doing them @mafia
until it becomes repetitive/i'm not learning anything useful/new then I'll keep doing them I guess

6:04 PM
@BernardMeurer Good motto.
@MAFIA36790 o/

user116211
\o/

First quantization is stupid. Second quantization makes sense.
FTFY

Second quantization is just a fancy word for "Fourier transform"

user116211
I witness Ron is also banned in Quora :(

@Slereah Nooooooooooooooooooooo
That's not true!
Ok well sort of.
But not really.
@MAFIA36790 Yes. You'd think smart people would make the decision to behave in a way that doesn't get them banned. Getting banned means you can't share what you know as much, which is less good. Unfortunately, not all smart people think this way, or they don't prioritize being able to participate as much as they prioritize standing on principles.
This is extra-unfortunate, because by participating you can help improve the rules of the community.
By getting banned one achieves nothing.

6:12 PM
Hello

6:26 PM
wow @0celo7 is back :D
did you enjoy your extended 'break'

1 hour later…
7:30 PM
help me out with this:

Q: help: in applying calculus in physics

ramsayI am new to calculus and during my mathematics class my sir defined $\dfrac{dx}{dt}$ as $$dx/dt=\lim_{t\to t_1}\dfrac{f(t)-f(t_1)}{t-t_1}$$ and my sir made a clear statement that $\dfrac{dx}{dt}$ is not a fraction it only behaves like a fraction! (it means $\dfrac{dx}{dt}$ is just a notati...

8:24 PM
@ramsay "Like, you shouldn't feel bad about thinking of these things as infinitesimals. That's the idea. But the reason people say not to think of dy/dx as a fraction is twofold. 1) Mathematically, that's not literally what it is. It's a limit etc etc. 2) Sometimes, if you are too uncareful with treating these terms as variables, you can come to a result that's just actually wrong. I don't have an example off the top of my head, but when I was teaching calculus, I saw this happen now and then.
On the other hand, I don't have a problem with people reading this as "infinitesimal change of y o

9:14 PM
so it's summer and I start graduate school (physics PhD) next semester
normally I did research over the summer so I have an oddly free summer :o
I've been considering buying the first several volumes of landau and lifshitz and going through that over the summer

10:14 PM
> the cuFFT library are very similar to the API of the library known as “The Fastest Fourier Transform in the West”
Lol
