so is something that isn't what people who are not me would say a badpn'tismn't

@badp I stopped reading at "something"

I'm sorry my choice of word was insufficiently hip

You need a hip replacement

Your choice of words was lacking so much hip, you will need a GODDAMMIT @TWOBUGS

I have plenty of GODDAMMITs for @twobugs
I'm saving them for a rainy day
since I'm in the Netherlands, that'll be a while

5:03 PM
Thankfully you have an unlimited supply of "back", cultivated by playing LoL

Those five matches have me a lifetime supply of back
It's part of a true pro much core gamer recommended word diet

apparently i got a pundit badge.

There's nothing better than a nice side of word salad for your true pro much core gamerhood

Word salad, topped with a little salt and 'bro' pepper.

Q: Strange lag in Mirror's edge

YaddyVirusI was trying to play Mirror's Edge on my new Win 10 Laptop with 1. i5 6200 2.3 GHz 2. 4 GB GeForce 940M 3. 8 GB RAM The game was running on highest settings, res 1366x768. The game runs just fine, until there is a chase, and then the game goes extremely choppy, its like tearing between the fram...

5:09 PM
> bro, ult that fucking ganker's back ward

@Sterno How is it?

the worst part is... search for "this.JOKES="

@Evilardaozkal what does it do?

@djsmiley2k the website is a dad joke dispenser

5:10 PM
@Evilardaozkal chrome will automatically prettify JS now

and all the jokes are hardcoded
like HARDCODED
that is more evil than me and @Wipqozn
combined!

so what? it's self contained

I can think of many issues.
Caching being the first.
Why not contain the jokes in a separate xml/json and make it have a shorter cache time?
if the website is not cached, then that is another problem.

thats never a good sign

build lost
build found behind couch
build cleaned up with dish towel
build mistakenly used as serving plate.

5:17 PM
> 1 fail built

build now includes lego and some megabloks

> 1 build gained sentience

> 1 civilization failed

@Wipqozn CONFUSING
But I only played for 10 minutes
Now I have to go back to work

@Sterno work is overrated. I need to become better at video games, so I can get paid to play them

5:22 PM
That's not how it works

you get paid to play worse?

Sure let's go with that

@djsmiley2k if I get good enough, people will pay me to play worse so that they have a chance to win

Pretending to be productive when you have nothing to work on is almost as hard as actually working.

5:26 PM
it's horrivble isn't it :/

horriVBle is now my favourite reverse backronym for visual basic
@Evilardaozkal that's a non-issue if he's not planning to update it a lot

I guess I can just look through all these records of why people were fired. That should be interesting.

@Dragonrage you can also learn to be bad enough

@badp Oh, so I should get bad enough at the game, that people pay me not to play so I won't be on their team?

I was rather thinking youtube clip compilations, but sure, let's go with Team Switching as a Service

5:32 PM
@Sterno Hard to teach an old dog new tricks

@Wipqozn you don't have to call yourself a dog just because you're having git trouble
soon you'll find that Git is Perfect and Does All The Things
and that I never remember what words are exempt from title case

Q: In-game console output

Matthew BarnardI am trying to create a personal project based on the /loc command in the H1Z1 console. Is there anyway to request the /loc while running the game and get the return in the command prompt of windows? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am expecting something like below:

5:50 PM
Can I get answer banned for posting bad movies to Bridge Movie Night? By bad I mean not liked movies, they got quite a bit of downvotes: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/users/87186/…

Moral Quandary.

All Star, no question

@LessPop_MoreFizz right
@twobugs baka gaijin~~

"All-Star" and then close your eyes and pretend you're watching Shrek

@Evilardaozkal Terrible taste isn't a crime. It only should be.

5:53 PM
@Sterno so you are a criminal?
BUUUUURN cc @Wipqozn
(regarding friday and bad rats, that is)
and whats under your blanket and galactic hitman

just always post hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, it contains the answer to life, the universe, and everything

@Dragonrage do it.
I'd upvote that

@Evilardaozkal If I were a criminal, I'd be a Smooth Criminal

Q: Terarria what happens with Crimson Seeds?

PietroI recently spawned and killed the Eye of Cthulu, I got 2 crimson seeds, I planted them and it now says (when I ask my dryad) "Central City (my world) is now 7% Crimson! You are so close." What does this mean? Have I destroyed my world? What is happening? I am terrified.

@Sterno GET REKT

5:54 PM
Also, I'm pretty sure that "I know you are but what am I" doesn't meet even @Wipqozn's low burn requirements

I never got the obsession with Hitchhikers Guide. It's a near series but it's already running out of steam in the first book. It carries on for 3 more.

@LessPop_MoreFizz not much of one

(I should hide some of my extensions, I dont even need to see half of them)

6:00 PM
@badp I agree, the choice is obvious
All Star is guaranteed high quality music. There are so many anime songs you will probably get a bad one.

@twobugs EXCEPT THAT ALL ARE GOOD

whatever you do, if you don't like it, you can just scream.
in fact, you are already screaming.
it dawns on you that you have been screaming all along.
screams are all that you can hear either way.
it helps that the other guys who are about to be subjected to your arbitrary choice of music from the stationary boombox are also screaming.
you pull the lever to the right. Screams come out from the boombox.
it's screams all the way through.
soon your ears get used to it, and everything becomes silent. Forever...
the stationary trolley eventuallly is pushed back as a result of the vibrations.
screaming-induced silence is replaced eventually by true silence.
it's a very beautiful moment.
everyone is happy.
you did it!
well done.

animes have crazy stuff all the time. anime songs might save them.
idk, naruto screaming sasuke and the trolley exploding etc

there's no need for that. everyone was the hero that wrecked @LessPop_MoreFizz's day.

6:09 PM
if they are lucky soundtrack of nekopara will play and chocola will save the people about to die.
I don't know any more anime. sorry.
FWIW many anime stuff can save them, and I'm thinking of one that I don't even want to think about. Thinking about something else, shrek might save them too.

see you're trying to use japanese tropes to solve a 'merican thought experiement. you need a 'merican power fantasy to overpower your powerlessness with the sheer manliness of your maximum overlungs.

@Evilardaozkal does that just say "I don't know" a bunch of times?

it looks like it

6:14 PM
@Dragonrage yes

@murgatroid99 I'm still not used to see ur name in bleu

rub some bacon on it

@badp haram
@Dragonrage same

the good news is you can now modabuse his typos to smithereens and make him feel awful about it

@murgatroid99 while you are here, do you keep getting job invites to your github mail too? I'm getting bored of it.

6:16 PM
I've gotten a few, but not so many that it's really annoying

I get one like, monthly. I have my work mail on github, and I get crazy notifications of mails that drop on that address. (have it on all my devices, my primary has notifications off but this doesn't)

Q: How does Infection Bio War calculate infection spreading (infecting)?

Rudolf JelínekI was playing Infection Bio War, but it certainly has a different way of calculating how the infection expands than other games in the genre. When you open the stats tab while all states are infected, the game shows you like 10x more states with over 90% or under 10% infected people then the othe...

(the Discussion section is almost readable)
> Washings carried out by a veterinarian took approximately 60 seconds and decreased airborne allergen levels by an average of 44%

The worst part is that I wouldn't even get the job. I never worked with ASP or such, my only C# experience with web is... a fake youtube link to troll bridge people that opens friday when clicked, however I keep getting jobs about mostly ASP.net
+ I'm on HS

tell them. It is possible that they don't care what you already know or not.
even likely

6:21 PM
They just bot.

is there a way i can see my comments that got me the pundit badge?

Many agencies assume VB.NET / C# skills are interchangeable and if you know one of the two, they want to know if you have web experience, which usually leads to ASP.NET. The part they don't tell you is they're probably still on the 2.0 or 3.5 framework.

@Dragonrage there used to be a data.se one

are people still writing in VB.net?
I thought it was totally dead.

6:26 PM
it is.
github.com/… 230k users that specialize in C#, I'm sure I'm not in the first 100 pages, so I wonder how they find me :/

VISUAL BASIC 6 VISUALEST BASIC

I think it's dead to all civilized people

Real men write in VB6 nothing. Nothing at all. Ever. No way.

VB6 is where the horrible COM object era stuff.
I had to do some of that when I got started.
And the university I used to work for has extensive code in VB.NET.

yup, I remember trying to load the timer COM object library thingadongdong into Excel and VBA
Excel crashed within seconds.

6:28 PM
@badp TIL Cat necks are ick!

I changed a bunch of code one day in VB.NET to make use of the OracleConnection handler, specifically intended for Oracle DBs.

I just wanted to let my spreadsheet autorefresh so I didn't have to tape F9 down :(

Two weeks later, "OracleConnection will be phased out after .NET 4.0. Please use ODBC connections."

I got a pretty big dilemma about my computer right now

@MadMAxJr at which point you naturally issued a git revert
and everything was fine again
right? right? right? that's how it works, right?

6:30 PM
My boss at the time: What's a repo? We don't need one of those, it sounds expensive.

you probably just ignored it. After all what's a .net 5.0?

@badp Git? in those days?

@NateKerkhofs .net 4.0 was released in 2010.
git 1.0 was released in 2005.

Also my boss at the time: "I don't care if my code doesn't run in the IDE, it runs on the server and that's all that matters." <-- Guy who spliced PHP calls in all the page headers because 'It's better that way'

wince

6:32 PM
Anyway, I just read a /r/PCMasterRace post about people who forgot to remove the plastic film from their computer hardware, and now I kinda want to check if I forgot to do that myself
However, with the wonky state of my power button, I'd rather not power down my computer, and doing that while the computer is on is impossible

I can't find information about the process that led Linux to use git

Sounds like you have at least one other issue

like, the actual year when that happened and they officially abandoned whatever other thing they were using

....
git history? ;)

huh.
> The development of Git began on 3 April 2005.[18] Torvalds announced the project on 6 April;[19] it became self-hosting as of 7 April.[18] The first merge of multiple branches took place on 18 April.[20] Torvalds achieved his performance goals; on 29 April, the nascent Git was benchmarked recording patches to the Linux kernel tree at the rate of 6.7 per second.[21] On 16 June Git managed the kernel 2.6.12 release.[22]
that
that's about 100× faster than I expected

6:36 PM
ihavedonenothingproductive.gif

@MBraedley Could have been worse. You could have regressed

@Dragonrage That's the one

@badp wow.

Q: Are there any hints on the times of events in Undertale?

D. TanyaThis is not exactly a question on how I can pass through something, however I would like to find out if there's any hints throughout the gameplay, albeit pacifist or genocide, which tell us specifically about when certain events happened before Frisk fell down. I know that the game is set in the ...

6:40 PM
@badp wat

@fredley I'd expected it to take at least one year to complete the migration
I guess two weeks is merely ~25× faster
but that's like half an order of magnitude off

@badp That's utterly insane though
I mean wat
'Hey, I've got an idea for better source control'
Two weeks later

Soo I'm not in any of the top lists (or the bottom lists FWIW), I wonder how they found me

@fredley oh, so you're also surprised that it took a couple of weeks.

@badp As in that is a short amount of time
Very short

6:44 PM
oh okay.

Argh my more experienced coworker is out with pneumonia and I'm the only one working on a lot of this stuff and it's driving me crazy

When was mercurial first released? Or another DVCS that Linus might have taken inspiration from?

@Evilardaozkal how who found you?

babby git does babby merge

6:44 PM
@NateKerkhofs I get job invites to my github mail usually. Once a month to once a week.
well, if the time between job invites changes I guess it is not that "usual"

@Evilardaozkal They have bots that go through lists and try to correlate that info with other places to see if you have a job or not.

3 mins ago, by Evil ardaozkal
Soo I'm not in any of the top lists (or the bottom lists FWIW), I wonder how they found me

@Evilardaozkal That's why they have bots.

M   M1   M2

AB
 |`-------v     M2 clones M
aB AB file A is change in mainline
 |`---v AB' file B is changed in M2
 |   aB / |     M1 clones M
 |   ab/  |     M1 changes B
 |   ab'  |     M1 merges from M2, changes to B conflict
 |    |  A'B'   M2 changes A
  `---+--.|
      | a'B' M2 merges from mainline, changes to A conflict
      `--.|
         ??? depending on which ancestor we choose, we will have to redo A hand-merge, B hand-merge, or both but if we look at the files independently, everything is fine
aaaaand that's why I don't follow git mailing lists and the such

they basically brute force as github.com/allsortastuffhere ? or maybe just google?

6:47 PM
Yeah, essentially. "Bot, generate me a list of possible candidates that meet these requirements."

People using bots for job listings is actually pretty common

No human "found" you, they just saw your name on a list.

@MBraedley more likely "bot find me all the email addresses on github so i can spam them with job listings"

It's not unheard of to reply to one of those bot generated email and get a human response that says "You aren't qualified"
Despite the fact that THEY sent out the email

@GodEmperorDune insert "that are associated with this tag"

6:50 PM
given that i get job listings for "senior dev" in languages i have never dealt with

That's why I ignore 90% of the mails I get sent for job offers

@twobugs all mails I get are "send ur CV", pmuch normal

Most of them are generated by bots and just not relevant for me

replyu that they aren't qualified to find qualified people for a role, but they seem to be doing it ;)

my favorite are the ones that spell my name wrong (or in BOLD ALL CAPS)

6:51 PM
I should set up my own mail server for stuff and giggles.

and at the bottom "plz forward to anyone who may be qualified" ... wait, as a recruiter, isn't your job to umm, recruit?

For literally to laugh at the spam gmail/hotmail doesn't even allow in spam folder.

I know I shouldn't be so picky, but the fact of the matter is that in my situation, I'm better off finding a job that fits me than finding a job fast, since finding a job fast for me probably leads to being unemployed again slightly slower

I still get CV/Resume requests for "You used VB.NET 9 years ago in the 2.0 framework, can you come maintain our 4.5 project? Also can you convert it all to C# for us?"

@MadMAxJr yeah i regret that an old resume of mine has a few months of PHP work in it... i get so many terrible things from that

6:53 PM
I did MS Dynamics CRM development for 1.5 years. about 1 in 3 people who contacted me after that wanted me to do Dynamics Development even though I didn't like it

I still get a bunch of emails from recruiting companies even though I unsubscribed and deleted, or hid my resume on all the sites

@Dragonrage its too late, you are in their "database"

We defeated the recruiters today, but tomorrow they will be back in even greater numbers.

especially since most Dynamics CRM development in Belgium is for consultancy, which is not a good option for me

@GodEmperorDune i mean i just flag them as spam, and never see them again

6:55 PM
@MadMAxJr Their listings will blot out the sun...

@twobugs then we will work in the shade!

Remember when I posted that passive-aggressive email about dead tree correspondence? That was in response to mail order catalogues I get every 3 months, ever since I bought a winter coat in Germany a month after the world cup in 2014.

although i prefer getting spammed with job listings than being in a non-tech field and having a horrible time trying to find open positions

@twobugs Is this the part where Xerxes slinks around and offers me a lucrative helpdesk position in exchange for referrals to get people placed on programming jobs?

6:57 PM
What I don't like is reading posts on Workplace where people scoff at the notion of having switched jobs a few times in a few years. "I'd throw this resume out, they show no dedication"

Yeah, I've switched jobs roughly every 3 years. I can't say, "My previous employer did not understand developers are human beings and not wizards."

It's this frustration notion that employees have to really care deeply about their companies even when, in my experience, the majority of companies are willing to try and just wring you dry then discard you

@twobugs it depends on what else is going on and the field

And my boss before that threw out the line, "If I tell you to mow my lawn it's part of the job. So if I tell you that you now need to generate graphics for the UI, that is part of your job."

@twobugs 90% of the companies view their personnel more as resources than as human
It's the remaining 10% that you need to find

6:59 PM
if someone is a consultant, they are going to bounce around annually and that's just how it is
