Ah, a binary emulation layer for Linux.
Now, if only Linux had a stable binary ABI.

great comment
> Whew, I'll finally be able to run WINE on windows! :)

@swasheck It will run some older Win32 applications better than modern versions of windows.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that was the followup to that comment
i hate ubuntu and aptitude so much that i'm not really excited about this.

also ... we still run win7 here and probably will for a long time

There's a fine line between genius and insanity.

@swasheck One of the main reasons commercial software vendors don't like supporting Linux is that the kernel and glibc folks flatly refuse to commit to a stable ABI so it's difficult to ship binary-only software.
One nice thing about Solaris is that you can run binaries back to SunOS 4.1.

8:05 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that's exactly what I was about to say

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells i didnt know that

It's more of an issue with glibc than the kernel.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that and the oracle licensing ...
wait
@PaulWhite to what are you referring?

@swasheck Which side of the line Microsoft are.

@swasheck Well, that will pretty much dominate your platform costs no matter what you run it on.
@PaulWhite A Linux userspace that runs software from at least one major distro as binaries is probably quite useful.

8:07 PM
@swasheck about guys that have genius like knowledge about SQL Server, but stay awake to 4 am and wake up at 6 am

I've had cygwin, SFU, Uwin or MinGW32 running on Windows for nearly two decades now. I don't often build a development machine without it.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Perhaps. I really don't know how to evaluate that, and what priority it would be. Hence genius/insanity question.

i mean with a bash shell in native windows i can now manage my mongo servers

@PaulWhite If it was to be useful they would have to support it for production deployment like SFU.

@Lamak I've been sleeping a lot the past few days. Getting over a cold.

8:10 PM
@PaulWhite how self-centered, I wasn't talking about you ;-)

@Lamak Oh! :-)

Most OSS of any consequence tends to get a MinGW32 port at some point, but the support can be hit and miss. If MS and Canonical were actually to team up and make a supported version of this then it could be a useful product.

Hey, could it be just an April Fools joke? served 2 days early?

I just don't know how we'll spot Microsoft's April 1 joke this year.
And @ypercubeᵀᴹ just ruined that.
Humph.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ It's plausible. Emulating the GNU/glibc userspace is pretty easy on most kernels, including Windows. This just adds binary level emulation.

8:11 PM
@PaulWhite SQL Server release date

@swasheck That would seem a bit lame by comparison. Perhaps announcing SQL Server for Toasters?

@PaulWhite SQL Server Raspberry Pi Edition would get my attention
3

8:46 PM
Or Raspeberry Pi for my toaster.
