C# reviewers could contribute about C# best practices; VBA reviewers about VBA's, Java reviewers about.. well you get the idea. Also the scope of the site isn't necessarily the scope of the blog - the two are intertwined and related, but not the same thing; we could go meta-meta and post about the act of reviewing code on CR, things we learn, not just things we teach. We could blog about the projects this site has inspired (VSD, Duga, Rubberduck, CardShifter, etc.) - I don't see an end to what we could blog about. — Mat's Mug ♦ 33 secs ago

@Quill Maybe we are looking at this the wrong way. Rather than seeing 2000 as "oh no; we're not reviewing fast enough", we could look at it as "oh goody; our site is growing". But, I don't know the stats so I'm not sure.

Since this question is more of a code review than a specific question, I recommend moving it to programmers.seMatthew Herbst just now
@DougSmith I see. The scope of this question turned out quite a bit more than the first looks of it: seems like a "legacy-to-current Swift translation project" like this is possibly more suitable for stack exchange code review (post you attempt at translating the code), or as separate technical questions here at SO. Or possibly someone can put an effort into it in this thread, and help you out all the way. I need to go to bed myself, however. Good luck! — dfri 43 secs ago

maybe not, but if I say "well, I'd like to revoke your right to publish my code" then unless there's a contract that says "you can't do that" then you can't just reinstate or share the code like this

Q: How to optimize this javascript code

KxxI think this code(below) is not optimized, I would like to optimize it so first, here's the code: Please help me, Thanks in advance. function changeSalesStage(value){ var $form = $( getProductsForm() ); if( typeof(value) == 'undefined' ) value = $("#sales_stage", $form).val(); ...

well, I guess if he transfers ownership and lets that user put it back into NPM then I don't know what the point is
... at least it ought to teach developers to only use libraries with unrevokable licenses

@Pimgd NPM transferred ownership

9:56 AM
npm transferred ownership.
Though the author does outline in his Medium post that he was happy with transferring ownership of projects

> if you volunteer to take ownership of any module in my Github, I’ll happily transfer the ownership.
That's what I'm talking about

The main controversy here is that npm forcibly un-unpublished an unpublished codebase - without consulting the original author
And also allowed a republish of software to a version that was already "in the wild" - normally you cannot do that

as for that, I know not to use that platform now

....Why?

can't do anything about it for the company

9:58 AM
I'm not defending the author, though... npm were perfectly in their legal rights and ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law
just because the OP "didn't know kik didn't exist" doesn't mean that he is therefore protected from trademark lawsuits
> kik's legal goes after the post author
he says "fuck off"
kik escalates to npm
npm says "hey, this is a serious issue, could you rename your package"
he says "fuck off"
npm removed the entire kik package.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

which is fine

i'm not quite sure why kik thought it was such a pressing issue though

maybe it had better seo than the app

the part where npm decides whether your code is published or not means you seem to waive any rights to it aside from the part where you get to say "I made this"
attribution required? nope
restrictions on usage? apparently not, given that npm can distribute at will
@Quill first four pages of google are about the app
so I don't think so

it was a joke

10:04 AM
@Pimgd ya know that the code was published under WTFPL
which lets npm do anything. including not attribute the original author

that fixes all my points and reduces it down to forceful transfer of ownership then

I especially like the "ones", they are more "one" than what you normally would see in other cables. Very cheap cables tend to run out of zeros after you have been using them for too loud audio or video with a lot of blue in them. Not this cable, it has an abundance of zeros in reserve. It will keep feeding those zeros to your TV or Receiver like it's no tomorrow!

@PinCrash for VBA comments
oh wait, that's "single quote"
nevermind

> "Is it indicating possession?" USE

@PinCrash English.

i.e. when it's possessed

> "Are you indicating possession?" DONT
... right

unless if is plural and indicating possesssion, then don't.
unless it is already plural (like children) and it is, then use it.
and if the moon is in a certain position in the sky, don't.

lol, you think English has funky rules, try French

@Pimgd and the answer gets 0 more upvotes :)

the real problem with english on the internet is that there are too many and too few grammar nazis
too many in that they seem to be everywhere bothering people
too few in that they're not pointing out my mistakes all the time, making me fall into bad habits

@Pimgd s/they're/there are/ # ps: not a contraction

yes well I was distracted
the original version was worse, it had "too many too too little grammar nazis"

too many too's too
reminds me of "Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo"

2:48 PM
That's what I intended
wait no
I wrote it bad like that; I needed to use "and", but fingers typed "too" instead
because viva la revolution

Q: Data Driven (ability) system

Menno GouwI am making a data drive system for creatures, abilities, items, etc. Considering my ability objects I need to create "templates" from the these since parsing them in real time is too slow. I am trying to find a way to just reference these on my creatures instead of a copy of the reference for ea...

@Kaz wait is that Trumpspeak?

@Mat'sMug Make Fish and Chips great again!

@Mat'sMug Not really, Trump is more of a parataxis guy.

Q: Comparing two approximate string matching algorithms in Java

coderoddeGiven a text \$T[1..n]\$, a pattern \$P[1..m]\$, and a nonnegative integer \$k\$, report all positions \$j \in [1..m]\$ such that \$ed(P, T(j - l..j]) \leq k\$ for some \$l \geq 0\$, where \$ed\$ is the Levenshtein distance between two input strings. TIL VBA doesn't care about access modifiers within a module, even when accessing a private member "from the outside"
even IntelliSense gets confused ffs ... @Kaz ^^ ever encountered this? issue #1234, the last known resolver bug

Q: Java class that parses Shoutcast stats XML

Sega dudeI have written a Java class that parses Shoutcast 2 stats XML. It uses JDOM to parse the XML. I have only basic knowledge of Java and I wrote this class in about 3 hours. It works, but I don't know if I've done everything right, or how efficient it is. I intend to use this class in an Android app...

If you want someone to review your code; go to codereview.stackexchange.com; if you want your question re-opened here, we need a title and problem statement that other people would search for if they had your problem. No one would search for "is there any simpler and shorter way to do this"; tell us the problem you have; with words that you'd you'd use to search for to solve this problem. — George Stocker ♦ just now

@Duga mod abuse of close vote powers?

Eh, seems justified, it's a crappy question for SO as presented

3:29 PM
^ what he said. also on Code Review because every single question is literally asking for a shorter and neater way to do this, they'll want a title that tells potential reviewers what your code is doing. — Mat's Mug 36 secs ago

lol

and a few minor edits make it on-topic for SO.

Kaz
@Mat'sMug I don't name things that abominably anymore

lol
still, if I want Rubberduck to handle all the crap VBA can take, I need my resolver to actually work with these cases - and if such nasty code doesn't break the resolver, nothing will!
besides, there's nothing like a user to come up with new ways of breaking things
bool beginsWithVowel = "AEIOU".Contains(char.ToUpper(strUser[0]));
ToUpper better than ignoreCase?
Oh, and to those ignorant of languages outside English... calling ToUpper() does not magically make it a case insensitive check. — Nyerguds 13 secs ago
got my answer
lol

What should I do if a question got edited, I answered the question, then realized that the question had previous edits which changed it in response to answers (and now good chunks of those answers don't make sense)? My answer has parts that don't make sense if I make the rollback...

Q: Swing GUI in Java

learningJava123I'm learning Java at the moment and I'm currently trying to make a GUI using Swing. I've done some reading and people usually prefer and advice to use composition instead of inheritance of e.g. JFrames. I'm trying to code the GUI by hand instead of using the GUI builders, since they all generate...

What
@SimonForsberg edits make no sense
but I wouldn't expect his edits to make no sense, so I get the feeling something ELSE happened

Maybe has to do with the fact that it was migrated from SO?

Kaz
3:39 PM
Please do not update the code in your question to incorporate feedback from answers, doing so goes against the Question + Answer style of Stack Exchange. I have rolled back your edit to allow more answers to answer the original question. If you want to improve your code further, consider asking a follow-up question. Additionally, your question was migrated here from Stack Overflow because this question is considered "too broad" on Stack Overflow. — Simon Forsberg ♦ yesterday

quite possibly... doesn't look like he's online atm though

Looks like we need to rollback to be point of first answer

@Kaz yet there's no rollback in the edit history... did he manually roll back?

Kaz
Sounds like it was (maybe) edited before migration?

Which would require roll-back by hand.

I'm pretty sure @SimonForsberg knew what he was doing
ugh what a mess

Should I open a meta question for this?

so rev.4 shouldn't have happened

Kaz
This whole question is a mess from start to finish.

3:42 PM
@Pimgd and that makes Justin's answer based on ...clouds

That's a sad thing,

I don't want to delete my answer because I did spend some time writing it, but if it's best, I'm okay doing so.

but fact is the question was already invalid starting from revision 1 on CR
it got corrupted from revision 3 onward @ SO

Kaz
I gave it another shot. Could you look at the main post? I've edited it. Regarding SwingWorker, I don't think my application requires it. Is it fine to use invokeLater with Runnable for now? Or can I leave that out too? — learningJava123 2 days ago

I'm looking at the timeline atm

Kaz
3:44 PM
Yeah, looks like rollback to Rev. 2 is what *should* be done. Lot of mess to clear up in the meantime.

ok so it was asked on SO, answered on SO by David, then there's a comment saying it was edited, but no edit in the edit history - that's what's making it hard to fix now... we don't have the full picture

what do you mean?

then it was answered by Vince, and then migrated
> 2 days ago comment added learningJava123 @VinceEmigh Can you check the main post now? I've edited it.
^^ there's no corresponding edit in the post history
so it was migrated and immediately edited by Simon

no, I'm just looking at the CR timeline - the edit history didn't migrate apparently

3:49 PM
it should get rollbacked to rev 2 of SO

that's Simon's edit

yet they were posted before the post was migrated to CR
ugh and the answer timeline has a trail of comments ending up into a chatroom

@Harry should also use .ToList() not so often. So yea, go to code review stack exchange harry — Mafii 1 min ago

so what's the problem with rolling back to the rev2 I linked

However, the "Recently Closed" option will only show you code reviews up to a certain date in the past. I'm not sure how far exactly, for me it seems to be about a month. So if you are looking for anything from a year back or something you are likely not going to find it this way. — mattherman just now

@Pimgd that "rev2" isn't on the CR timeline, can you confirm that our "rev1" is SO's "rev2"?
