The most recent answer was clearly after the comments, and I don't see an issue with flagging there.
But I do see a potential issue with the flagging of earlier answers that were posted before the comment (and AFAICT were flagged not even 10 mins after the comment was added), since the answerer wasn't given any opportunity to correct them.

Looking at an epson, they have this really nice CISS system
03:19
@JourneymanGeek Didn't I mention EcoTank before?
These printers sold remarkably well in EMEA regions, to the point where Epson decided to bring them to the States.
Biggest drawback is print permanence. Don't expect prints to last more than a few years.
2
A: Why does my Canon PIXMA iX6520 use so much black ink?

bwDracoInitial cartridges generally have lower yields than normal, and ink is often wasted on maintaining the printed especially if you don't print often. As others have noted, if this is a new printer, it likely came with initial or starter cartridges which have lower yields than normal. In addition,...

Of all the things i would ever flag in the chat , that big stretched out pile would qualify.
@JourneymanGeek I use CISS systems (in epson) cheap as heck, minor modification to the printer that isnt even worth concidering, ink prices like 1/10th or less even. ink clogs easier, no matter how precision i do it i will have ink on me :-) before i am done assembling or re-filling. If printing is a constant , it is awesome. if your only print a bit here and there and would pause printing over a month, then print anyways :-)
03:37
@Psycogeek precisely
@Bob @bwDraco permanance is not an issue
We use a canon printer we refill naturally manually, good enough other than we seem to have more ink than we can use (especially my dad misplaced the ink), and refilling is messy.
The ecotanks seem perfect for how we use printers
Colors are off by a bit, but IMO after all the work they have done in colors, I am always adjusting anyways to get the desired acceptable look.
ya, but we do still have an 'oldschool' photo guy for when we want better quality printouts. this is just basic home use
03:49
Epson EcoTank printers are essentially printers with an OEM CISS. They're expensive but come with loads of ink and will easily pay for themselves given enough usage.
yup
I'm seeing 230 sgd on the low end AIW, and 330 for the higher end, wifi capable model
so roughly 100 dollar premium but that would pay for itself with one set of inks

If anyone is familiar with ARM processor design, is there an argument for running Cortex-A57 cores at very low clocks (e.g. 1.0 GHz or less) instead of using Cortex-A53 at higher clocks (1.4-1.6 GHz)?
...or is A57 so much more power-hungry or so much larger (in terms of die space required) that such a configuration would not make any sense?
There must be a reason SoC designers aren't doing this.
08:19
@bwDraco I'm certainly no expert, but my 2c - I was under the impression the A57 was somewhat more expensive. Additionally, I'm not sure if you've seen this photo: i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/articles/177342-image/01.jpg - if the image can be trusted, it appears the A53 has a significantly lower power to GHz ratio, to the point crippling an A57 wouldn't actually be beneficial compared to a full speed A53.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq @DavidPostill ^
It's VID_046D&PID_C537&REV_3400 though. So not the unifying type. Hm.
It does expose a keyboard, so there's a minor potential for a vuln there depending on how the dongle is implemented.
Okay, that makes sense now.
150 mW/GHz vs. 535 mW/GHz means that there's no benefit or reason to run A57s at very low clocks, even if undervolted so heavily as to bump into the minimum voltage limits of the semiconductor process.
256% more power to gain 56% more performance. Ouch.
@bwDraco Like I say, if that image is to be trusted. That said, it looks like a pretty nasty tradeoff.
Small gallery here that may be of interest if you haven't seen it already - phonearena.com/…
No wonder the A57 cores on my phone run so insanely hot for the performance they deliver...
...as in one A57 core consumes more power and generates noticeably more heat than two A53 cores under load!
@Bob damned near HID is... everything
08:29
(I have root and can enable or disable cores at will.)
@bwDraco And an interesting article re the fate of the A57 - fudzilla.com/news/processors/… - not sure how much research you've already done, but it seems it never truly got off the ground in comparison to the A53
@Jonno erf. Arm is confusing ;p
I always thought ARM SoCs were more efficient than any Intel Core part under the sun...
@bwDraco not really true
I guess that depends on your metrics for efficiency :)
08:32
No wonder why the Snapdragon 810 is notorious for overheating.
Those bloody A57s run hot as hell.
also, don't forget laptop and desktop chips have very different thermal constraints to what arm builds
My phone has a Snapdragon 808 but thermal throttling is still an issue.
@JourneymanGeek: x86 tax, they call it. So much legacy baggage and so much complexity that it's pretty much impossible to match ARM performance per watt on the same process.
@bwDraco not really
'x86' functionality is actually a very small part of the processor
the x86 parts are part of the core
Decoding x86 instructions is not free, and it's a heck of a lot more difficult to parse x86 instructions than it is to parse ARM code.
Its not terribly expensive either
08:38
That alone means that x86 will always be behind ARM in performance per watt (assuming the same process, once again)
Look at the mess with all these vector extensions that x86 has.
VEX encoding is so horrifically inelegant.
!!/wiki VEX prefix
@bwDraco The Wikipedia contains no knowledge of such a thing
and don't forget
vector extensions are faster at certain things
and Arm has them too
The VEX prefix (from "vector extensions") and VEX coding scheme are comprising an extension to the x86 and x86-64 instruction set architecture for microprocessors from Intel, AMD and others. == Features == The VEX coding scheme allows the definition of new instructions and the extension or modification of previously existing instruction codes. This serves the following purposes: The opcode map is extended to make space for future instructions. It allows instruction codes to have up to five operands, where the original scheme allows only two operands (in rare cases three operands). It allows the...
08:43
Basically intel's had to design chips that would run in the thermal constraints of a mobile phone on a clean sheet
Yes, but ARM has just VFP and NEON instructions. x86 has seen more than half a dozen different vector instruction set extensions.
x86-64 has well over a thousand different opcodes.
That's amusing
The Intel Atom is Intel's line of low-power, low-cost and low-performance x86 and x86-64 microprocessors. Atom, with codenames of Silverthorne and Diamondville, was first announced on March 2, 2008. For Nettop and Netbook Atom Microprocessors after Diamondville, the memory and graphics controller are moved from the northbridge to the CPU. This explains the drastically increased transistor count for post-Diamondville Atom microprocessors. == Nettop processors (small desktop) == === Single-core Nettop processors === ==== "Diamondville" (45 nm) ==== All models support: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SS...
Check out what the GPU is
08:58
@Jonno So it seems the core is too big and too hot to perform well on 28nm...
I suppose A57 is asking too much of the 28nm process...
But why are there thermal issues with the A57 on the 20nm process as used in the Snapdragon 808 and 810?
34 mins ago, by bwDraco
256% more power to gain 56% more performance. Ouch.
There can't be any other reason. Cortex-A57 was a server-oriented design that was optimized for performance over efficiency, and that makes it ill-suited for mobile unlike the new Cortex-A72 core.
Alright, see ya later.
36 mins ago, by bwDraco
...as in one A57 core consumes more power and generates noticeably more heat than two A53 cores under load!
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco And yet, real-world chips say otherwise.
Decoding x86 instructions is a very very minor task compared to the rest of the core.
The RISC vs CISC argument has been rehashed for decades.
Note that the chips they used there are now half a decade old.
Sandy Bridge. Pineview Atom N450 (2nd gen). Cortex-A8, Cortex-A9.
Since then, ARM has come out with far more powerful (and more efficient?) cores. Intel has made massive strides in efficiency (and processing power).
I'd expect them to be somewhat equal now. I wouldn't be particularly surprised if Intel pulls ahead sometimes, depending on which particular cores you're comparing.
09:24
@Bob which is what I said
Bob
Bob
"about the same size as Cortex-A57" is especially interesting, since they also say "Apple’s Cyclone+ and Nvidia’s Denver are much larger than Cortex-A57".
So basically here you have x86 cores of similar efficiency to ARM cores (of similar vintage), yet physically smaller than other ARM cores (with somewhat lower performance)
I know Cyclone et al. are huge cores. 9-wide issue!
Denver is 7-wide, and uses a completely different design. It's internally a VLIW core.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco Yes, it's not a fair comparison this way either.
But these matters are far more complex than "RISC vs CISC"
and x86 procs are 'RISC' ish anyway
to the point where AMD and maybe via were talking about using essentially the same core, or convertable cores that would do arm or x86
Feb 11 at 2:26, by bwDraco
The problem is that the Apple cores take up much more die space than any of the ARM Cortex cores which means they can only put two (at most three as with the A8X) cores on a chip.
Bob
Bob
09:33
I wonder just how much die area is used for the decoder.
And power.
Probably negligible.
You'd see a bigger impact from the longer instructions taking up cache, but that might be offset by ARM having more instructions.
Morning
In any case, ARM completely dropped the ball with the Cortex-A57. I can tell you from first-hand experience that running just one A57 core and one A53 core at full load makes the phone get hotter than pegging three A53 cores.
This is the only reason the SD810 suffers from all these thermal problems.

At the other extreme, it's much too verbose: superuser.com/revisions/248525/14

Funny how how in commercials they paint picture in black and white when showing someone using something not good for the job, getting angry maybe and tired but as suddenly change it to full color when advertising their product like everything is nice and dandy.

I bet 98% of SuperUsers haven't noticed this... I too did not until I stopped drinking fluoride, Coke, eat burgers and chips and gained mental clarity and became of subliminal messaging. I am no longer mindless recipient of broadcast. I am aware...
I'm pretty sure everyone over the age of 10 has figured out by now that commercials and advertisements are deliberately exaggerated and unrealistic.
@qasdfdsaq And with a very few rare exceptions completely not worth watching. I miss my STB inbuilt DVR :/
Hmm. According to stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/broadcasting/broadcast-codes/… "The rules which apply in the UK set limits for the commercial public service broadcasters (PSBs) Channel 3, Channel 4, S4C and Channel 5 - and all other commercial broadcasters. For example, there is a limit on the average number of minutes per hour of advertising across the day of 7 minutes an hour (off peak) for PSBs and 9 minutes an hour for all other broadcasters ."
I'm sure we get more ads than 9 minutes / hour.
Heh. The poor Americans can get over 20 minutes of advertising per hour.
@DavidPostill I'm guessing that doesn't apply to things like 4od - I'm pretty sure I get more ad's than content on there...
"the amount of airtime allowed by the UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom for advertising is an overall average of 7 minutes per hour, with limits of 12 minutes for any particular clock hour."
14:25
So that's the average over the course of a whole day, no more than 12 in one actual hour?
It appears so. I wonder where all the < 7 minutes / hour get scheduled? Probably when the channels are off-air ;)
A study last year by Arris showed that 84% of respondents wanted to fast forward through the ads they watch, while 60% of them download or record shows so they can skip commercials. Even Super Bowl ads have lost their effectiveness: a 2014 study showed that 80% of them do not increase sales for the companies running them.

The increased use of smartphones and tablets also detracts from TV commercials’ relevance. Last month, researchers found that viewers who focused just on the TV screen were able to recall 2.43 out of every three brands mentioned, while smartphone and tablet users only man
Yeah, like 12am - 6am or something, probably only a handful of adverts then
With 42-minute American exports to Britain, such as Lost, being given a one-hour slot, nearly one third of the slot is taken up by adverts or trailers for other programs.
So if you watch a US export program it's 18 minutes of ads/trailers.
No wonder Netflix original shows are so popular...
14:32
What happens to the business model if nobody wants to pay to have channels broadcast their ads anymore? Subscriptions...? Higher TV licence fees? I can't imagine Five surviving anyway.
@qasdfdsaq they're pretty good ;p
@Jonno licence fees only pay for public broadcasts
theoratically higher prices
Practically, it depends
BBC in the case of the UK, but even then there are talks of scrapping it
But the BBC has the benefit of no ads due to that

BBC does have some profitable ventures tho, BBC worldwide and news I suppose
@Jonno Beeb 3 is iplayer only no tv broadcast. Beeb 4 is off air during the day (evenings only) ...
I'd imagine Channel 4 are doing okay - I imagine a lot of their content is streamed from 4oD now and that seems to enforce adverts incredibly well - the faintest whiff of an adblocker and you're out.
14:44
@Jonno No figures for last year yet, but they only broke even in 2014
@DavidPostill Is television even profitable anymore? Yeesh, what about ITV? They have what, Emmerdale, I'm a Celebrity, TOWIE?

They make a lot of money on the voting for X-factor etc. It's a complete brainwash.
Ahhh yes.. Xfactor and I'm a celebrity voting must bring in a fair bit...

Millions.
Figures show 13 million viewers call reality TV hotlines every month and the nation blows £900million a year on numbers staring with 084, 087, 09 and 118.
During the most recent season of ITV’s “The X Factor,” 40 million votes were cast, including 10 million in the show’s finale.
Wow...
I wonder - do ITV make money off the live ticket sales also?
(X-Factor that is)
callers are in danger of being hit by bill shock - for example, a Three customer calling the Strictly voting line from November 3 face a total charge of 60p a minute, instead of 40p previously.
The price hikes follow an Ofcom ruling that fees payable to the phone firm and TV company must be shown separately.

And phone companies have taken the opportunity to hike rates, with Three’s fees rising 80% from 25p a minute to 45p, which O2 and Vodafone charge.
@Jonno £21.45 - £60.50 The X Factor Live Tour 2016
I'm sure ITV get a nice cut ;)
Along with Simon Whatshisface
@DavidPostill I suppose they have to pay for the venue and judges
I think I need a bigger LART.
@DavidPostill And they're twats. The phone companies' access charge should be inclusive, that's the whole point of it -_-

I'm going through some old issues of The Wall Street Journal right now. It's really unusual for a young college student to be reading this, but I'm doing this to be more literate.
Unless they're studying economics...
The ads are quite different than what I typically find in more mainstream newspapers. They're distinctly aimed towards wealthy businessmen.
Guess I should be working harder to move up...
Perhaps you should read instagram feeds if you want to understand the literacy young college kids tend to use these days...
I'm not one to let myself suffer from the falling baseline that is modern society. I try to do things the old-fashioned way: meticulous and austere.
When the rest of society is moving away from the strict standards of personal conduct we used to have, I try to follow the standards that once existed in the 18th and 19th century.
That falling baseline happen to be the sons and daughters of those wealthy businessmen targeted by your WSJ :-P

I'm serious about rising above the field. That's why I do this.
It's this meticulous approach that underpins every line of code I write and every word that goes into my answers here on Stack Exchange.
You could say I have some noble blood in me...
Dragon's blood is a bright red resin that is obtained from different species of a number of distinct plant genera: Croton, Dracaena, Daemonorops, Calamus rotang and Pterocarpus. The red resin has been in continuous use since ancient times as varnish, medicine, incense, and dye. == Name and source == A great degree of confusion existed for the ancients in regard to the source and identity of dragon's blood. Some medieval encyclopedias claimed its source as the literal blood of elephants and dragons who had perished in mortal combat. The resin of Dracaena species, "true" dragon's blood, and the...
