1:01 PM
You made my day sir!

@Quill d!!@

wat

wait, only one comment? damnit, too short

I should probably try to find some really old code and chuck it at Quill :P

I can't really do esolangs @somebody ;-;

1:05 PM
in a lua (horrific) style: g=string["gsub"]g(table.concat(string,"%"),"%a",function(c)print(c)end)

wtf @Katenkyo are you using a string as a variable

Actually, I was trying to write a prime checker, but by the time I hit 50 chars I realised the code was all wrong
:P

string is the object string :3

/me vomits

It is actually a valid lua program !

1:07 PM
@Quill Do you know Haskell?

nope!

Darn :(

void o(){O();}void O{o();o();}void main(){o()}
It could use some #define or __MACRO__ to uglify it a little bit more ^^

nice recursion

Actually, I'm wondering - is it possible to write some non-trivial piece of code such that Quill is guaranteed to have no problems with it? I always get the feeling that with code review, someone's bound to have a problem with something :P

1:11 PM
`#define 0 "()"`
`void o0{O0;}void O0{o0;o0;}void main0{o0;}`

@Sp3000 I'm not that good :p

:( lies

I've had a few questions that take forever to get reviewed

Oh, I found a nice one!
eval(arg[1]+"+"+(arg[2]))
Trivial, but ugly <3

What's arg? D:

1:15 PM
if that was javascript, I'd suggest using template strings

The argument array/table

@Sp3000 Nope

could be argv in C
@Quill I'm not a big fan of Javascript, so never heard of template strings, gonna check what it is ^^

@Katenkyo `foo${interpolated}bar`
const interpolated = 5
> foo5bar
That's a template string

I'm guessing the intended response was: 1) Needs more whitespace, 2) Why the parens on the second half? 3) Oh god eval D:

1:17 PM
@DanPantry Thanks!

Though there's something to be said for @Quill reviewing golfed code :D

grc
@Quill I commented on your comments

I can't do that. Not yet, at least

Actually, I think there's still an art to reviewing golfed code

@Sp3000 More like "3) Oh god, eval for a sum D:"
@Sp3000 i'll check if one of my lua golf would fit :D

1:18 PM
For example, L| in CJam (setwise union with empty list) is better than _& (intersection with self)
For deduplicating a list

@Quill i=1e300;for(;;i-->0){while(i&&alert('foo'));}

> That's an essential part of my algorithm.

> Or is it..?

@grc nice review !

Well played.

grc
1:21 PM
@Katenkyo division by zero
otherwise the program doesn't terminate

> Does this even fucking compile?
Comment-comment should have been "kiddy voice what's compile?"

@grc I commented on your comments on my comments

@grc dividing by 0 is love :)
@Quill you said you love ternaries ? :D
b[j]=0<a[j]and a[j]or(a[j-1] or 0)>(a[j+1] or 0) and a[j-1] or(a[j+1]or 0)

Try writing that in a python ternary ;)

It wouldn't work in python ternaries :)

1:26 PM
everything works in python ternaries :-)

it uses the fact that in a structure (cond)?(value1):(value2), if value1 is false, then return value 2

wat, what syntax is that

otherwise, it would be trivial to write down ^^
ternaries built on and&or operator ^^

@Katenkyo write it with arrays instead of and+or

1:32 PM
@Quill in a python like syntax : b[j]=0<a[j]?(a[j-1]!=false?a[j-1]:0)>(a[j+1]!=false?a[j+1]:0)?a[j-1]:(a[j+1]!=f‌alse?a[j+1]:0)

python is backwards

@somebody with arrays?

python doesn't have cond?a:b

> value1 if cond else value2

arf, assumed it was like in C
correcting myself right now

grc
1:34 PM
@Quill I commented on your comments on my comments on your comments

@Quill for(let D=0;;D-->0)alert('foo')

@Quill b[j]=a[j] if 0<a[j] else a[j-1] if (a[j-1] if a[j-1]!=false else 0)>(a[j+1] if a[j+1]!=false else 0) else (a[j+1] if a[j+1]!=false else 0)

@Katenkyo python array ternary (not recommended) is (val1, val2)[cond-1]

@somebody doesn't work in the language I made this in :)
It's a language that don't even allow you to do i+=1or i++
@somebody oh, for the python form ^^

Hello everyone
I have a question about Python answers. Are modules like sympy which don't come with the standard library allowed?

grc
1:42 PM
I've used numpy before

Alright, thanks!

Q: Find the optimal sliding door width

Stewie GriffinSliding doors have varying prices based on the width of the doors. The different prices are as follows: 60 - 80 cm: ¤150 81 - 100 cm: ¤200 101 - 120 cm: ¤220 When bying a closet you would obviously want to minimize the cost, so your task is to find the width of the doors that minimizes the...

When did they add the "business" link under "help" on the top bar?

@PhiNotPi Same time as the "Job" feature I think

When was that?
A while back? I guess I just haven't noticed until now.
Apparently one of their programs is to "sponsor a tag" where a business gets to put their logo and sponsored links on the tag pages.
Which I don't think I've ever seen before (I turned my adblocker off to check.)

I think it was some months ago
My adblocker is off too, and I feel like I'm never seeing ads anyway...

This site has ads?

2:09 PM
@TimmyD Yes
A part of them vanish when you hit 500+ rep
And otherwise, it's still sneaky

Huh. I'm not sure if it's good because I didn't/don't notice them (and so they're not obtrusive), or bad because I didn't/don't notice them (and so they're not effective).

Regarding SO/E's policy, it means they are good

Power has been out for an hour and my entire company is still programming.

@Rainbolt except you ^^

Our generator is awesome!
Hey, it's been 15 minutes and I have already assigned myself a task to work on
That's a lot of effort for one morning

2:15 PM
Haha, forgot some of us arrived at work right now ^^

2:31 PM
Hah! Our antivirus software is preventing some of our code from compiling successfully, so they disabled it for just our team for now. I turned on ReSharper to see if it would work again, and it seems to be working fine.

I don't know what's worse...
That your antivirus thinks your legit piece of code is a malware, or that your company turned it off...

I've been wanting it off ever since they put it on
antivirus software is for people who can't control what they click on
2

For personal use, sure. In a corporate environment, it's not my clicking that I have to worry about, but my idiot coworkers' clicking. AV doesn't prevent my computer from being directly infected, it prevents their computer from infecting mine.
3

TimmyD as a good point here...

And believe me, there's a lot of idiots in corporate America ...

2:39 PM
Also, lots of people casually use their USB devices for both home and office. Lots of viruses can penetrate into your network this way
s/America/World

'morning folks ^^
Yeah, you basically have to trust everyone on your network not to mess up. At home, you can make sure everyone has good internet hygiene and you're pretty well off. In a corporation of hundreds where I'm not in any position to teach people how to internet... I'd rather have some AV lower the risk. =P
Even if everyone is tech-savvy, it only takes a rogue download to mess up your day. And as the number of users grow, the chances of an error like that occurring by accident grow as well.
Plus, the cost can get pretty big as well - CryptoLocker on your home network will be a bad experience for a few days, depending on how you do your backups. Shut everything down and build them back up one by one.
CryptoLocker on your corporate network is going to be a whole other can of beans =P

@Roujo It could get even worse when you an other company manages your servers and can't possibly be there in some hours...

@Katenkyo Pretty much, yeah. In any case, it's out of my hands - I'll let corporate IT manage their network, since I'm not going to be the one cleaning up if it ever goes bad. =P

2:55 PM
@Roujo The various Crypto variants, I think, have been a good wake-up call to people that data you don't backup is data you don't care about. It's kinda sad that it takes something as drastic as Crypto to get people to realize that, though.

@Roujo Sadly, in my actual position, I might have to deal with the trouble until I can get in touch with this out-site company ^^
@TimmyD Anyway, if your sysadmin doesn't have a good automated backup solution, he should be fired.

@Katenkyo At my previous job, I have literally had a client say "What do we need backups for? It's on the SAN!"

@TimmyD That literally froze my brain...

3:22 PM
@TimmyD That's the same kind of customer that would complain about system slowness when you restore a snapshot from the SAN because they refused to properly back up the data

Well, they were running ~2500 mailboxes on a single Exchange 2003 server with, I think, 8GB RAM at the time, so they were pretty used to "slow."

@TimmyD Their sysadmin should be fired... And by that, I mean burnt to death.

And by that, I mean by the sun.

^

Hehehe, yeah. He was ... special ... to work with.

3:30 PM
He was eating the ram as Chrome would do?

Thankfully, that was many years and several jobs ago, so I don't have to worry about it anymore.

They added stuff to the Help dropdown o_O

Q: Block-diagonal matrix from columns

Luis MendoInspired by Copied from this question at Stack Overflow. Given a matrix A, create a matrix B such that the columns of A are arranged in a block-diagonal fashion. For example, given 1 2 3 4 5 6 the output would be 1 0 0 4 0 0 0 2 0 0 5 0 0 0 3 0 0 6 Rules Input and output may be in the for...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Thanks.

Have you guys heard of the Beta function? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_function

3:42 PM
I'm not a math lover, so I can't say I heard of it ^^

It's a little like the gamma function, in that it's defined by an integral, but this function has two parameters instead of one. I figured I could have one or two questions on it: one based on the beta function B(x, y)when both x and y are integers, and one when x and y can be any number, including complex numbers

4:03 PM
Man. It makes me sick to my stomach that so many birds run into our window

@AlexA. needs glasses?

@Sherlock9 Sure! When you say "questions", do you mean PPCG challenges?

Ah! Yes, that is what I meant

Sounds good!

4:27 PM
Lol. The new Conspiracy set for MTG says "This set is designed for eight-player drafts followed by free-for-all games of three to five players each." How many ways can you achieve 3-5 player games using 8 players?

@Dennis Convert to base 2 in J is #: right?

#: or #.. I never remember which is which.

8 choose (3, 4, or 5) ... hmm

@Rainbolt My guess is that there will be a conspiracy that lets you move a player to a different game before they start

@KevinW. That would be interesting

4:36 PM
That feeling when you've got a working algorithm for a challenge but it's almost 300 bytes ...

There's no J built-in for overlapping slices? Hrmph.

4:55 PM
working on my generic KoTH controller: can you guys think of any obscure scoring methods that have been used in the past?
I'm averaging scores, summing them, max score, min score, mode score (who knows)

@Doorknob !!!!

@Doorknob \\o//

@LuisMendo was so excited he grew another pair of arms :P

Feels weird not seeing the beta label...

4:57 PM
I'm a constable. \o/

Ha-ha, A51 hasn't updated yet...
@Dennis Oh that's right all the pro-tems get Constable

It doesn't seem to be actually "featured" for me in the sidebar, though.

@Doorknob ...

February is "very close" to the new year?

6 to 8 weeks came early this year.

5:01 PM
@TimmyD What? That's two things.
@Dennis 6 to 8 weeks is a very, very fluid period of time

Grace NoteIt's a big day, and I know you folks have been waiting a reeeaaal long while. Double waiting, you might even say, since unfortunately we made you wait even longer after initial news. But, let's make it official! You've been cleared for graduation by the Stack Exchange Community Team! Programming ...

I didn't want to tamper with that one. It's historic.

5:08 PM
Can we get downstars added to the list of things we want to change now that we're graduated? :P

I feel like I'm in a nursery

Yep. Graduated PPCG has just been born.

It's a... site!

We've finally moved on to the next stage of StackEgg.

now time to take down all of the other sites

@PhiNotPi I almost said the "r" word but I don't want to be suspended.

Is it just me, or did the actual graduation break the graduation user-script? =P

Just misspell it to get past the auto-ban filters: Rade

Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks

oh snap, does that mean I just lost a bunch of privileges?

5:12 PM
@NathanMerrill That doesn't happen until design.

Not yet.

Well damn. Now I can't make graduation jokes any more. What will I do with all my free time?

Make design date jokes.

@Geobits Make design date jokes
ninja'd

Or maybe just leave here forever and find a new beta site to harass.

5:14 PM
Goodbye Geobits

I'll probably wait to do that until the design comes out in March, though.

I was going to type "design date jokes", but got ninja'd, then was going to type ninja'd, but then got ninja'd on that too

@Geobits RIP

Go join ProgrammerDan in the list of people I wish still participated on this site but don't anymore.

@Geobits I hear Open Source SE could use some harassment

@Geobits Exactly.
@GraceNote So what exactly happened with the graduation flagging script bug?

> We're... still kinda looking into why that happened, but your good news shouldn't have to wait!

OK.
Oops didn't notice that :P

@AquaTart they included a if (! name.startsWith("codegolf")) :P

Q: Picture of an old friend in ASCII art

Luis MendoI hope this picture looks familiar to you. It's one of Pacman's ghosts in his "vulnerable" state, after Pacman has eaten a power pill. The challenge Picture our ghost in a little frame, using ASCII art. At normal scale (more about this later), each square in the above image should correspond...

@AquaTart Thanks.

Marky has developed a taste for goat-flesh.

Looks like November 1st came early this year.

@AlexA. hahaha
Anyways I hope you're enjoying your Constable badge

I am indeed!
And I assume @Dennis is as well.

And I hope to see you with a Sheriff badge before too long ;)

So does that mean Marky can't count on your vote? :o

@Geobits You get three votes.
Marky will get one too don't worry

Ok. I'll let him know.

We seem to be missing something!

I don't read the transcript in here. It's too long.

Well congrats! :D

@AlexA. then who is supposed to moderate chat?

@AlexA. Haha is that an angry duck?

5:34 PM
@NathanMerrill The mods are active at different times and as a whole cover we cover the entire day.

@AlexA. Yes, we graduated.

I was joking :)

Oh, okay :P
@zyabin101 Oh really? I hadn't heard.

@LuisMendo I'm actually not sure what it is, but angry duck is accurate enough I suppose. :P

I have Firefox instead of Chrome. :(

@Geobits That was one of the most forced jokes I've heard. :P

5:43 PM
For whatever reason I have Safari, Firefox, and Chrome all installed. But I'm using Safari.

@Doorknob You must not have hung around with @Geobits often, then.

@Doorknob Well you'd be the expert on forced entry, now wouldn't you? :P

I'm using IE because I'm working on an IE bug.
The typical "The page you just made works in every browser except for IE."

HTML5 then? :P

Hey, not to worry. Soon it won't work on IE and Edge.
