Ofc. One can never have enough 'RAIS IS NOT BACKUP' answers. :)

2
A: Windows 7 software raid 1 performance questions?

qasdfdsaq RAID is not a substitute for a backup. What you want is a backup Yes, your HDD will hold back your SSD. Like all RAID-1's you can only write at the speed of the slowest device. Windows' can balance reads across both, but is pretty primitive at doing it. [Edit] Some clarification: As per 1 an...

Been there, done that.
@Bob My name isn't big enough for you then huh? :-(

it is all lower caps. That might not be big enough. :)

Bob
@qasdfdsaq You have a name? I must've missed it in that jumble of cat-typed characters :P

Fuck you, fox face.

Bob
:(

5:15 PM
At least normal people accept cats into their house!

What's a good way to create some kind of web form based calculator-y thing?

You don't hear songs written about "What does the cat say?" cause people know what cats say.
@jokerdino For simple calculations? Javascript would do.

@qasdfdsaq HTML + JS?

Pretty much, yeah.

How do I publish such a thing?
Clippy..

Bob
5:17 PM
More like the only way, if you don't want a page load every request.
Though it's up to you if you want to go raw HTML+JS+CSS or use some framework.
@jokerdino Get webserver and domain name, put on webserver, done.

I want to rewrite this thing --> clashingtools.com/lootcalc.php
I wrote a Windows Form app but I want a web one.

Bob
Eh. Up to you how you do it. This is pretty trivial stuff.
With dozens of acceptable solutions.

Spill some newbie ways.

Bob
If you wanted, you could do it in ASP.NET webforms, or MVC, but that's not really the simple way and that would be complete overkill.
@jokerdino Already told ya, HTML+JS(+CSS)
Just chuck controls on the screen, read from them, do calcs, write output to an element somewhere.

So, that's the way? Thanks!

5:21 PM
@jokerdino That's not entirely simple looking, but does look to be mostly client-side JS+HTML
You could start by copying the code off that site :-P

Bob
That's not even something I'd bother with an IDE for, but a framework might be easier than raw html

I have most of the logic working.

Bob
...Though there's a learning curve there too

Is there some kind of a HTML designer? ;p

Bob
I'm familiar with extjs. React and angular seem to be popular
But this is simple enough for raw js to handle pretty easily
@jokerdino Highly not recommended
wysiwyg editors tend to be crap
not good for much more than writing blog posts, if even that

5:23 PM
So, I have to write all those HTML tags by myself?

Bob
definitely not good for writing js
@jokerdino no, you generate them via js

O_O
I know what I will be doing tomorrow.

js frameworks make it fairly easy. Like "Document.forms.append(number-box,style,blah)"
Some are even just like "$.AddTextBox"

Bob
You can insert the tags without frameworks but then it devolves into efectively an extremely verbose templating language :P

I add tags using PHP print() statements >_>

5:26 PM
I should be looking at a sample project so I can get the idea behind this.

Bob
@jokerdino angularjs looks good if you want mvc
Dojo looks decent if you want a more traditional way of doing things
jquery is a nice abstraction over raw js will keeping fairly close to it

Windows Form seemed a lot easier. :(

Just cause you're used to it. JS frameworks are just as easy if you use them all the time.

Bob
@jokerdino only because you used a visual designer without really understanding the concepts behind it -_-
if you look at the code-behind it's not allllll that different from html+js

I used Glade for GTK designing. Haven't wrote any controls by code.

Bob
5:32 PM
and wpf is even closer
IMO the hardest part of js frameworks is figuring out where your code starts executing :P
have a shot at writing something to the screen first
then figure out how to add controls

OK. How do I write this code and where do I run them?

Bob
then figure out how to read from them
@jokerdino You write in .html and .js files. You run it in a web browser.

I probably would finish it if I know where to start.

@Bob ++++

Bob
5:35 PM
It's a bit beefy but the first stage gets you into executing some JS

I have written JS lol.

Bob
You can skim over sections if you want :P

from codeacademy I think.
probably even compiled some using npm.

Bob
@jokerdino Actually you might find it easier to start here: developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Learn/Getting_started_with_the_web/…
The last one might be best. Gives you an intro on HTML, so you can figure out how to link your JS in.
It's also fairly brief.
And it recommends some tools.
> A computer.
lol

lol

5:38 PM
lol

Bob
If you're on Windows I'd recommend VSCode. Or Atom. Or Brackets. Or Sublime. One of those.
I think they all work on Linux too...
Notepad++ is outdated now.

I am using N++ on Windows 10.
Oh crap.

Bob
lol

:-(
I still love Notepad++

Bob
It works as a basic text editor but doesn't really provide things like context-sensitive symbol completion.

5:40 PM
Let me download atom, brackets and ST3.

That's why it's called Notepad++ not Eclipse--

Bob
@jokerdino btw, VSCode is different from VS.

Gotta have them all for someone who doesn't know shit about coding.

Bob
And I'd really recommend just going with one.
I use VSCode. Atom is pretty good.
Brackets was buggy the last time I tried.

I think I had both brackets and ST installed in fedora.

Bob
5:40 PM
Sublime is closer to Notepad++ than the others.
In that it's more a glorified text editor than a lightweight IDE.

I liked brackets because it seemed better integrated into git.

Bob
They all have git integration.

yeah, but brackets' git was easier to use
OK Stop. Let me download Brackets.

Bob
lol

wait, I already have it

Bob
5:42 PM
It's up to you, but I've told you my recommendations above.
Personally, I think VSCode's code completion works the best. Otherwise they're all somewhat similar.

Is VSCode free?

Remember the old Verizon Droid "iDon't, DROID Does" commercial?
@jokerdino Yes, and it is in fact open-source—code.visualstudio.com

Bob
@bwDraco Nope.
Might have something to do with me not being American. Maybe.
Atom is by GitHub btw.

VSCode is not a MS product?

Bob
Brackets was Adobe then they kinda released it open-source -- dunno if they're still the maintainers.

5:44 PM
Wut.

Bob
@jokerdino It is.
It's a "new MS" product.
Open source and works on all OSes :P
Bit of a departure from "old MS", hm?

There is no MS written anywhere.
Ah, it's at the rock bottom.

Bob
@jokerdino Well... is it really relevant?
VS itself doesn't really mention MS on its page.

Most of their products come with a big MS branding.
IDK, let me get back to JS scraping.

Bob
@jokerdino Not even Office does!

5:47 PM
Even though iPhone may have been the launchpad for cutting-edge technologies—Retina display, 64-bit processor, fingerprint sensor—it has been leapfrogged time and again by Android devices. The Verizon Droid devices were an early example of this.

@Bob "Microsoft Office" lol

Bob
@jokerdino Unless you mean the page title that I never look at? :P

lmao
I suddenly have 34 tabs open.

Bob
@jokerdino Pssh. Amateur.
325 right now :P

It was 3 when I first started this conversation.

Bob
5:49 PM
@jokerdino Anyway. This looks like a very good guide, and I'd recommend going through the CSS section too since those selectors are useful in JS. developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Learn/Getting_started_with_the_web
Just go through it top to bottom :P

Which of those things in that link are selectors?

Bob
Each section is pretty short too. Good primer without cramming too much crap down your throat.

@Bob Well at least I feel less like a tab junkie now, think I got up to 125 at one point

Bob
@Mokubai My record was a bit over 2000...

I see combobox, textbox and a command button.

5:50 PM
@Bob Porn?

Bob
@Mokubai Nup.

Without an adblocker?

@Mokubai Why do you need so many tabs of that?

Bob
@jokerdino ?

@Bob what do you refer to as a selector in that php form?

Bob
5:51 PM
@jokerdino Just go through the linked guide.
A CSS selector is not something visible on-screen.

maybe I don't know what I am talking about.

@bwDraco Apple has and always will be about the "bragging rights", Android devices were always headed in those directions but Apple always needed to be able to say they were there first even when they weren't

Bob
It's a way to locate an element via code.

ah, that.

Bob
This is all explained in the very concisely-written, well-set-out guide I'm trying to get you to read first :P
Ignore the links before that one. Just the most recent.

5:53 PM
They are all open somewhere.

Bob
It also seems to teach by example, rather than block o' text
4 mins ago, by Bob
@jokerdino Anyway. This looks like a very good guide, and I'd recommend going through the CSS section too since those selectors are useful in JS. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Learn/Getting_started_with_the_web

> iDon't have a real keyboard.
iDon't run simultaneous apps.

iDon't customize.
iDon't run widgets.
iDon't allow open development.
iDon't take pictures in the dark.
iDon't have interchangeable batteries.
Everything iDon't... DROID Does

Bob
Ignore the other links I gave you - those were things I found while looking for the really good one :P

So much has changed since.

@Bob You keep sending me to first page lol.

Bob
5:54 PM
@jokerdino Yea, I'm saying follow the links within in order.
The other links were about 10 mins ago :P

Android devices no longer have hardware keyboards and interchangeable batteries are disappearing (although LG has been an exception and it is a key selling point of the upcoming LG G5).

@bwDraco Yep, my Android doesn't have interchangeable batteries either
But heck it is shiney

Multitasking was added to the iPhone some time later and camera performance has dramatically improved on both sides since.

Bob
@bwDraco They had it in the G3. And G4.
Anyway, I'm out. 'night.

Customization, widgets, and open development are still not possible on iPhone, and this is not changing anytime soon.
...but these are pretty much defining aspects of the iOS platform. For power users, this has been and will always be an advantage of Android.

This spam calling from people in India saying your computer is infected - is this particular to particular regions? And is it recent? I've never received such a call, ever. Of course, I live in India, so coals, Newcastle.
I was just looking at an article about it, and it does look like a major problem. I suppose the telephone companies can't do anything about it?

Bangalore /bæŋɡəˈlɔːr/, officially known as Bengaluru ([ˈbeŋɡəɭuːɾu]), is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. It has a population of about 8.42 million and a metropolitan population of about 8.52 million, making it the third most populous city and fifth most populous urban agglomeration in India. Located in southern India on the Deccan Plateau, at a height of over 900 m (3,000 ft) above sea level, Bangalore is known for its pleasant climate throughout the year. Its elevation is the highest among the major large cities of India. A succession of South Indian dynasties, the Western Gangas...
People always overlook India as a booming center of technology...
Google search suggestions do not lie:
> [mobile device] price in india

@FaheemMitha If the callers present fake caller ID it is difficult (but not impossible) for telecom providers to block them.

@bwDraco If by technology you mean mobile phones, then, sure, India has 'em.

Not just mobile phones, but all sorts of high-tech devices.

@DavidPostill I see. Sounds like they are quite a pest, though.
@bwDraco Mostly just mobile phones, I'd say.

6:45 PM
> canon 70d pr[ice in india]

They love those things. They're practically conversation pieces.

This is the second suggestion for this input.

I just saw this:
Scammers Prescreen Victims for Tech Support Scams via Twitter and Phone https://zeltser.com/prescreening-tech-support-scam/

Most Indians have a very sketchy grasp of technology. This often includes computer professionals. They just love the shiny.

Pakistan is getting very, very big as well. It's the next suggestion for a lot of price queries.

6:47 PM
" I observed multiple Twitter bots responding to Twitter users with invitations to call several phone numbers, all of which seem to lead to the same automated system. (See screenshot below.) The objective of such interactions is to save scammers time and, therefore, money, by using automation to profile victims and helping avoid dealing with people who are not worth the scammers’ time. It’s an interesting twist on the classic tech support scam."

For example, most people here run Android phones, though they have no idea what Android is.

@DavidPostill I'd just block and report such accounts.
Twitter still has a spam problem.

@DavidPostill Is this a major issue in the UK?
The computer spam thing?
@bwDraco I don't know if I'd take Google suggestions that seriously. Google isn't the Delphic Oracle.

@FaheemMitha Spam is a problem everywhere. And has been since the first spam sent in 1978 templetons.com/brad/spamreact.html

> seagate hard drive pr[ice in india]

6:50 PM
@DavidPostill Well, sure. But I was talking about this particular variant. People calling up to say your computer is infected.

> wd hard drive pr[ice in pakistan]

A technical support scam (often abbreviated tech support scam) refers to telephone fraud that claims to be a legitimate technical support service. It can either begin by a cold call, usually claiming to be associated with a legitimate-sounding third-party, with a name like "Microsoft" or "Windows Technical Support" or it could begin with an unsuspecting user searching for commercial technical support via a popular search engine such as Bing or Google. Remote desktop software is used to connect to the victim's computer, and the scammer then uses a variety of confidence tricks that employ various...
In English-speaking countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, such cold call scams have occurred as early as 2008 and primarily originate from call centres in India.

@DavidPostill 2008 is relatively recent. I wonder which scoundrel's bright idea this was.

@FaheemMitha So we've had 8 year of this telephone spam crap :/

@DavidPostill Have you personally experienced it for 8 years?
And is it getting worse?
Hmm, when I was first using email in the early 90s, spam wasn't an issue at all. I guess these things get worse over time.

6:55 PM
@FaheemMitha Personally for the last year. When I was living in Holland I didn't get such calls. Yes it seems to be getting worse. Like I said before I got the same idiot calling 3 days running (a couple of weeks ago).

Your mom what?

@DavidPostill My sympathies. I get a fair amount of telephone spam here. But currently it is recorded spam. A machine calls up and plays music at you, then some gibberish. I usually hang up at the music part.
And it's relatively recent - started in the last few months.
I'd like to find whoever is responsible and hang him up by his testicles.

I get more calls trying to offer me new windows, replacement boilers, solar panels, compensation for a car accident I never had, compensation for bank loan insurance I never had, etc, etc. At least one call per day sometimes 4-5 :/

Eek, a paperclip! Am I hallucinating?

6:59 PM
At least I can play with the Tech Support scam calls, winding them up and wasting their money.

@bwDraco Christ, I nearly had a heart attack.

@FaheemMitha meet @Clippy

Hello, @Clippy.
@DavidPostill Makes one yearn for the time before telephones.
Reminds me of the bit in "To Say Nothing of the Dog", when Ned time-travels back to Victorian England, and muses about how quiet and peaceful it is. Of course, the Victorian age had some disadvantages.
Calls offering A/C support are quite common here, for some reason. I get one or two a month.

7:34 PM
hello anyone knows how can i fix an audio problem on windows 8.2
8.1

8:00 PM
Uhm, plug the speakers in?
Seriously though: without extrta information I doubt it.
As for me. I skipped windows 8 and 8+1

8:28 PM
I skipped Windows 9

> [...] SunPower Maxeon cells [...] My older Anker Astro3 power bank was able to pull the full 1.5A continuously under mostly bright sunlight (slightly reduced by clouds), with a tiny bit left to spare. After accounting for losses at the voltage regulator, that's about 9-10 watts of power from the panels. The fact that this is possible with three panels is nothing short of amazing, and I'd expect even higher output in full, unobstructed sunlight.
It's absolutely incredible how far solar power technology has come.
