Thanks @Paulster2
I actually discovered this forum by accident. I was on the electrical engineering stack exchange and stumbled across a migrated question.

@vini_i How's it going? Congrats

Not bad, you?

@Paulster2 Almost tied for the week
doing well
You got to 5k pretty fast

@vini_i - Haha! That wasn't hard to find a migrated question from EE.SE, lol!
I'm glad you're here though ... keep up the great answers :D
Please ensure you're voting, though :D

I didn't get a bit of real work done today. I screwed off in here.

12:39 AM
The life of a supervisor

I work from home

Slacker...
:D

:-)
Yes@!

@Paulster2 A good answer will always get a +1 from me. Questions though I'm more stringent on.

I'm a bit liberal on new users. When you see they 6 rep or something...and the question is at least moderate.
I'l throw em a bone so they get some validation and maybe come back.

12:44 AM
@vini_i - I know and do what you feel is right. I just try and encourage all to vote ... this isn't EE. SE, so those rules don't apply here ;-)

Does anyone else feel like there are lots of questions on OBD communication?
Like development questions, more than repair questions.

I've been seeing a lot lately ... but you could say the same about any other subsystem as well.

It seems there are phases

I don't know ... this user called Max keeps putting out all this low hanging fruit.

There is a particular user that ask Dev only OBDII questions
I'll find one

Q: Wheel alignment from OBD parameters

Soumya SenCan I calculate wheel alignment from OBD parameters. Car is Hyundai i10, and it doesn't give any Steering Alignment/ Steering Position data. The only method to check the alignment is to let the car move as you keep your hands off the steering wheel and watch it drift to one side. But, can this be...

This guy

12:49 AM
Yup that's the one.

I didn't check but I would hazard a guess all of his questions are OBD Dev
Doesn't seem fitting but does. The dual homed people in here Dev/Mech seem to flow to those

Dee
Well at least they know where it connects to.

This guy seems pretty smart. He's trying to figure things out. Asking questions

The questions seem poorly researched.

Indeed.
His stumbling along....
he is....

12:53 AM
Or he feels that OBD is much more than it actually is.

You may have nailed it. Which would map back to poor research.

FYI @DucatiKiller I fixed a bug in that extension that you must've noticed... Should get an update from the chrome store to version "1.0.1" within the hour. Or, if you used the packed extension from github you will need to manually update.

@DavidFreitag awesome. I'll use it

Stupid javascript messing with me on release day :b

of course
I had a bug dump an entire vmware farm right at the start of entire application layer migration last week.
That's how it works lol
@vini_i I like zaid's OBDII upgrade question. I dug around and couldn't find a thing.

12:59 AM
What question is that? I haven't seen anything.

I'll get it

@DucatiKiller if you go to chrome://extensions/ check "Developer mode" and click "Update extensions" it should force the extension to update now.

@DavidFreitag Awesome! you should put link to that and the Mathjax in meta
or you can past them in here and I'll post it

@DucatiKiller Which meta site?

This one
for mechs
or hell.....maybe even the root meta site

Q: Are there any plans to update OBD-II?

ZaidOBD-II is ancient It predates the Porsche 911 GT1, Windows 95 and implementation of the Schengen Agreement. I would have thought that SAE would be working to add more diagnostic coverage for features that are virtually essential to most passenger vehicles today, such as ABS, airbags and tract...

1:01 AM
Heh, I didn't know mechanics used typesetting engines frequently :b

@vini_i This one
The ones that know how. If you look at profiles of users there are a TON of IT people here
or engineers

Well, feel free to post if you would like. The relevant StackApps posts are here, and here

From Googling...California is getting involved in the regulatory definitions with processes that involve phone home features that notify the state of senor failures related to emissions. They want to automate violations and ticketing.
@DavidFreitag right on! thanks for sharing the wealth

@DucatiKiller If you can think of something else you might like added to chat I can add it to my list

I'll definitely think about it. Since I'm an infrastructure guy I like diagramming but in chat probably not.
Wish I could with the answers though and do good tables

Q: What is a sprag unit and what does it do?

Paulster2I know a sprag unit is used in the transmission. What is it and how does it work? Is it used anywhere else or is it strictly a thing used in transmissions? Are there different kinds of sprags?

Low hanging fruit.

mmmm...gold
LOL

ROFL ... for whomever answers it.
I'm sure.
Get 'er done!

I've reaped the bounty off of those kinds of questions lately.

And you're on here instead of answering it?

I'm going to let someone else bath in the rep

1:08 AM
I'm ashamed of you ...
;-)

If someone doesn't snatch it half an hour I will
I'm a giver

That's why I'm asking and not asking/answering.

I've had some really good questions and I've had some miserable failures

LOL! Don't feel lonely ... we cannot all be @MaxGoodridge

I need some MC questions. I'm losing my mind surrounded by you car guys.
and your crappy power to weight ratios!
:-)

1:10 AM
Okay, I'll make my next question an MC question ... just ... for ... you
We all cannot own a Tomahawk, now, can we.

No, we can't

Now there's some p2w ratio, lol.

yeah that things outrageous. They made that over a decade ago didn't they?
I remember when it was on the cover of all the MC rags

I think so. Oh, I'm not a Dodge guy and I was drooling.
I love the fact that it's not actually a motorcycle in the strict sense.

Wow...they made 9 of them. I thought it was a true one off

1:13 AM
It does have 4-wheel independent suspension.

The Dodge Tomahawk was a non–street legal concept vehicle introduced by Dodge at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The Art Deco-inspired design was the work of Chrysler staff designer Mark Walters and featured the 500 hp (370 kW) 8.3-litre (510 cu in) V10 SRT10 engine from the Dodge Viper. Hand-built replicas of the Tomahawk were offered for sale through the Neiman Marcus catalog at a price of US$ 555,000, and up to nine of them might have sold. Dodge emphasized that the bikes were "rolling sculptures" not intended to be ridden. == Design and fabrication == The...
Agreed. It's not a motorcycle
It just resembles one

Not an MC but a Monster

It's an homage to a motorcycle at best

The 9 which were sold were replicas, not even the real things.
It's a beast.

It is
I'm a function guy though so I need to usability
need to see usability
It's interesting that you call it a sprag unit, unless I have it wrong
I call it a sprag clutch
is that a locality thing?

1:17 AM
The unit is a clutch
The sprag unit is a one way clutch.

yes, I call it a sprag clutch
you call it a sprag unit
is that a regional thing or am i calling it the wrong name? In MC's....sprag clutch

You wouldn't say: The sprag clutch is a one way clutch ... that's redundant ;-)
No, I believe it can be called either.

No, I wouldn't say that but I would say. That's a sprag clutch.

I've heard it called both.
Potato/tomato
same/same

gotcha, always trying to sift through nomenclature between cars and MC's

1:19 AM
I's all good.

@vini_i I"m interested to see the answers to zaid's obdII next version question
@Paulster2 wound up googling all manner of obdII today while I 'worked'

1:43 AM
laugh
@Paulster2 See comment :)

@DucatiKiller I just posted it, let me know what you think.

2:03 AM
@LynnCrumbling - You nailed that one ;-)

It's all about delivery.
Two mechanics walk into a bar...

Ayup
One says to the other ...
That bolt sure torqued me off today.
The other says back
Don't let it bother you
The first says
Why not?
The second says
...
<cough> I've got nothing <cough>
...

<ponder>

ROFL
The second one says,
Well at least you weren't home with the wife!

laugh
Hrmmm.

2:07 AM
Two mechanics walk into a bar and sit down to eat their lunches. Then the bartender says, ''Sorry, but you can't eat your own food in here.'' So the two mechanics look at each other and swap lunches.

My problem is that every ending that I'm coming up with is NSF(C)

Whatever works for you ... I'm headed to beddy by. You all have a great evening ... go out and fix something!

Was angling to play on wife/bolt/screw and all that.
No good can come of this.
Hey, thanks for the answer today.
(Chart and all)
Yeah, I need to work on the Wheel Horse.

2:10 AM
No worries.
Laters.

I mounted the snowblower last night.
Now I need to wd-40 the chain
and try to unseize it.
'night!

@vini_i Nice answer

3 hours later…
5:55 AM
@Paulster2 yes, I saw that video before retiring last night
I can't wait to see the LS 350 vs Mopar 350 showdown :)

5 hours later…
11:24 AM
Feels so weird... A two-stroke that's just as efficient as a four-stroke? I'm impressed

1 hour later…
12:48 PM
He is not talking numbers ! , Obviously they are better than carb 2 stroke but I am pretty confident they are not more efficient than a similar 4 stroke engine
Its common sense, in two stroke you pour in twice the amount of fuel than the 4 stroke , what this article should say is comparison between carb 4 stroke & EFI 2 stoke
Basically these dudes installed EFI to a 2 stroke engine , not very revolutionary, just like apple always DO..

1:13 PM
@Anarach this isn't just EFI. It's GDI
The air and fuel don't enter the cylinder premixed
And there is minimal unburnt fuel in the exhaust because it is injected when the piston is above the exhaust port
I asked the two-stroke question because I had a certain understanding about the concepts of fuel efficiency between the two. Direct-injection has changed the picture dramatically
A two-stroke engine with port injection is no different from one with carbs, I agree

1:30 PM
@Zaid That Singer video was amazing. Thanks for sharing.

When you say MPG is not the best method to compare I got confused

@JonathanMusso it's a dream car to own :)
@Anarach I want to limit the discussion to the engine tech here. BSFC is the right measure for fuel efficiency

@Anarach :D Just curious. Do you know why they make clay mols of the panels?
Er, that was meant for @Zaid :D

1:45 PM
@JonathanMusso no

I think they use that clay as their buck for manufacturing panels but I haven't seen it done like that before. In traditional metalworking you take the car/panel and then weld a skeleton around it, remove it, and build a wooden/foam buck based on those dimensions.
Interesting process with the clay, I want to learn more about it.

2:06 PM
@Zaid Well, if you put it that way then I respect that , the vehicle which i was talking about are basically based on same platform and have relatively similar gearing, they are all commuters where the gearing is almost always designed for maximum fuel efficiency, Just my 2 cents

1 hour later…
3:27 PM
@DucatiKiller, Sounds like he has the fix - he just needs more random pieces of wire touching his starter.

@JPhi1618 that's a good one. I don't even know the whole story and I love the image I have I my head. Bzzt zap! Yeah, it's supposed to do that!

@JPhi1618 LOL yes, the bzzt sound @BobCross

Q: OBDII ELM 327 Bluetooth adapter - is it reliable?

Sartheris StormhammerI got myself such a bluetooth adapter for my car, because the display on the radio stopped working, and I wanted to see if it will show up any errors. There are even apps for Android that work with said bluetooth adapter. My question is, are the Android apps reliable, meaning, would they show as...

All the cool kids are here today

How is the OP going to use an OBD-II reader to tell him what's wrong with his stereo?
I'm only on for a minute.

3:37 PM
with magic...duh.
:-)

That doesn't sound like his only problem...

Well, I can set certain parameters on my radio with a VAG-COM cable... (on my VW)

really? well then.

That's not OBDII tho, it's CAN.

Gross. It's PAL. NTSC 4eva!

3:40 PM
That said, I really don't think the radio is ever going to throw a trouble code.
VW or not...

That would be awesome. "Why did the CEL come on?" "Because your taste in music is ass."

Lol.
All of the CELs would be on.

lmao....that would be a GREAT answer

This question is sad...

Q: Paycheck Keeps Bouncing

von MisesA friend of mine works at a small company, maybe around 50 employees. She gets paid eventually, but obviously this is a pretty big inconvenience. Once th...

Sounds like an excellent Apr 1 question.

Oh FitBit, your merciless eye is ... Without mercy. And stuff.

3:51 PM
Come on @LynnCrumbling, that would be a C or U error code. P is for powertrain related codes. Geeze...

But the engine plays a tune

Not buying that.

@JPhi1618 Mea culpa... sad, when I can't even make a technical joke because of lack of knowledge of the code prefixes...

3:55 PM
@DucatiKiller that's hilarious :)

Hrmmm.. wonder if that would make a good question...

You and the Ferrari 250 GT again ... Geesh

There's another one where the Renault does the 'Top Gun'

it's probably documented on wikipedia, or at least in the ODBII spec

3:56 PM
Ferrari 250 GT = lots of awesome

Hey, look at that!
@JPhi1618 That's beautiful.

@DucatiKiller awesome!!

How have I never seen this before?

Wow. Can we put that in a question somewhere?
That's a serious reference.

No.
Not gunna happen.
I'll put my close hammer down upon its head.
Wait ... I don't have a close hammer.
It's all good.
:D

4:00 PM
Don't make me use the "divide rep by two" mod power on you.
2

@JPhi1618 Awesome link

Theoretically, I could use it an infinite number of times without ever getting you down to zero rep.

If you cut the distance in half an infinite number of times that I am walking towards you I will never reach you

Is that a real power?

@JPhi1618 It's a mod secret. He'll never reveal the truth.

4:02 PM
Ah, ok.
RSH rep;

Want to find out? meaningful glare

It's the fear that keeps us in line

@LynnCrumbling, looks like we have another heated debate...

A: How can it be dangerous to feed a water heater from two separate panels?

Tester101Assuming that both panels are fed by the same 120/240V single split-phase distribution transformer. The wiring would look something like this. How is it to my liking? ___ You've completely ignored my comments under my original answer! ___ Where'd you get Transformers, Lamps, Removing Grounds & Back-Feeds from? ___ Why aren't you displaying 2 Big Boxes with a Small Box between with a Black, White & Green wire-set & then a single Subpanel (that's Breakered & not just a Junction) wire-set of a dedicated Black, Red, White & Green to the Water Heater?!!! ___ Be honest, not deceptive! ___ Otherwise, be responsible & remove both questions entirely if it's so offensive & can't possibly be done safely & legally. — Iggy 19 mins ago

THAT'S NOT A-T A-L-L WHAT I SAID! AND, THAT'S NOT A-T A-L-L HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE! But, thanks for going out of your way to show your lack of understanding & completely bastardizing the ENTIRE situation. I know...

And that's directed at a mod!
HAHAHAAHA

Tester101 can be a bit blunt at times, but he's not a bad guy at all.
He gets very black and white when it comes to safety issues.

Wow.. Iggy's answer to the other question got bashed.

A: splitting a water heater bill

IggyOh, I see what you're doing. Now THAT'S clever! If you can find an electrician or plumber to do it. Then, YES. Very Generally, you just need a hot, neutral & ground of the right size & amperage to handle the full load, from each box & that'll split perfectly. Run it to a Sub-panel, preferably ri...

4:25 PM
Yea, just read that.

@JPhi1618 Rightly so...

It is wrong and dangerous.
I posted my comment on the followup without reading his original answer.

If the site is to be regarded as a semi-authoritative source of knowledge...

It looks like what I was talking about is exactly what he is thinking.

You don't want to have wrong, much less dangerous information on there.

4:26 PM
Yea, Tester comes down hard on that stuff.

Good :)

I've had him "will" me into updating an answer - but he was right!
BMitch I think is also a mod that commented on the original answer.
So it's not like a mod going rogue.
@LynnCrumbling, that shot to HNQ quick... To bad to put that kind of stuff on public display.
@BobCross is there a way for a mod to "opt out" a question from HNQ?
I'm guessing not...

It made HNQ?

Yep.
It doesn't take a lot of views on DIY to make it.
It has over 80 views in an hour, and that is a lot for DIY

@DucatiKiller yes indeed
Explaining what this site is about to the missus

Excellent. don't let me stand in your way. I'll circle back later. Good day.

@Zaid, are you really in Qatar?

@JPhi1618 why yes

6:45 PM
Interesting. What brought you there?

I've lived here all my life

Heh, good answer.
What is the most popular car brand there?

Toyota
But it's quite varied nowadays

I expected something more regional.

I think we have the highest number of Cayennes per capita
What brands are local to this region? I don't know of any that are well-established

6:52 PM
Ha, really? Has the Macan made it there?

Of course

I need to know. do they sell beer in Qatar?

Or Cheeseburgers?

Cheeseburgers and beer. Two of the four essential food groups in the US. Nice add-on.

Cheeseburgers yes. The latter you will struggle to source :)
19.1 QPD... I can scarcely believe my eyes 👀

7:07 PM
@JPhi1618 Never got to Qatar. Closest would be Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi
@Zaid now lets see where the average is once the wee peak has settled
my hope is that the graph is now a lot steeper

@RoryAlsop it's climbing... I don't see a "spike" per se

@Zaid ooh - which data link are you watching?

/site-analytics

@RoryAlsop It's been a steady rise. I've been manually counting daily since the metrics are delayed. On Sunday, I think, we had 24. So it seems that the Area 51 QPD is an average and as the aging days are dropping out the average is following in an upward climb

@RoryAlsop, I saw your music.SE profile. Cool!

7:17 PM
@DucatiKiller I think you'll beat me to 20k

@Zaid Maybe. Work is a bit slow and it's beginning to ramp in. As it does my time here will be reduced which effect my ability to get rep. So my rep climb is only temporary.
I might catch up but I don't think I remain tied. you'll pull away.

Hey, that argument is just as applicable here.

my ability to string together letters to make words is challenged today
We just picked up two new big manufacturing clients today. I see me free time dwindling rapidly. Two data center moves. Time hole.

@JPhi1618 thanks :-)

I wondered where the crazy mask avatar came from, but never clicked over to your profile.

to quote the famous @JPhi1618 "great execution of the humble brag"
Actually, that statement doesn't qualify.
would that be a hubris brag?

Dunno - the term could change completely in Scotland.
Might be a humbleloch or something.

@RoryAlsop Is there a big Scotland/Ireland rivalry?
