@DucatiKiller - I've been waiting to upvote your answer so it will count against your totals.

lol....I've been waiting on yours too.
Now I have some refreshing to do.

@DucatiKiller - Is that you doing all that voting on mine?

@J.Musser If the head is warped then it would require machining but before that the heads need cleaned and inspected.

It's the ones I starred. I'm stopping now. that's about the max before serial

LOL, you're silly
@J.Musser - Do you have a relatively new torque wrench?

12:18 AM
@Paulster2 Iwant to see if you agree with my answer. Not pining for votes. I piled onto this question for the heck of it.

Q: How long should I let me car warm up in the winter?

FrantumnI have been reading mixed reviews about how long to let your car warm up before driving in the winter months. Most of the articles say that the best way to warm it up is to let it idle for 1-2 minutes, then drive gently until it reaches its optimal temperature. My concern is the following: When...

If you don't, I'd like to debate if you have time :-)

I don't disagree with you, but when you say "where's your citations" yet you don't have any ... makes your argument look weak.

I have a citation on my piston :-) That was my internal justification
There is soooo much myth regarding car warm up
AND....what about an air cooled bug or MC and then a 1957 Chevy Pickup
but....that's too much

How does an air cooled bug differ?
I often wondered about MCs ... I've seen a lot of riders let their bike run for 10+ minutes before riding it. Seems extreme to me.

They are super loose tolerances because they get so much hotter. The piston needs to expand as does the sleeve
you can here the piston rattling up the bore when it's super cold. Just like an old air cooled two stroke dirt bike. It's crazy.

I know bugs a bugger to drive in the winter time, mainly because the heaters in them absolutely suck.

12:31 AM
10+ minutes is extreme. I would hazard a guess that they used to have air cooled MC's and are a bit older too
OMG....I had a gaggle of friends in HS with bugs in the early 80's. My first car engine rebuild was a bug
top end only

Shouldn't that be "side end only" :-D

Good point. I'm filing that away for use later. lol
Not sure I'll give you credit when I use it

I've not done much work on air cooled bugs ... I know it's about 4 bolts, some wires and a few extras and the engine drops right out.

Yes, very simple.

Ayup.

12:34 AM
It's hard to screw up

I helped a buddy of mine pull his out in HS. Many moons ago.
I'm afraid to give J.Musser a complete write-up on replacing the head gaskets ...
I just don't want to omit something crucial which I'd know instinctively, yet could screw someone up who wouldn't know.

yeah, he needs to get them checked for flatness....

But I guess I give out advice around here like it's peanuts ... why should it be any different for him?

There's real truth in that
He should get the white glove
Just bought this for my kid this christmas. No value for him but it's cool.

I have ripped about 3GB worth of music into my library today.
Brought it from 8.5GB to 11.5GB (about). I'm about 1/2 the way through all of our music. Still lots to go. Some is already ripped, but need to get it all done.

12:42 AM
I did that a couple of years ago. It took me two weeks. 1000 CD's
two computers 3 CD rom drives

We don't have that many, but still quite a few.
cd's, that is

I did it for my girl too.
same exact thing your doing. It was worth it. made her super happy.
and when she's happy....everyone is happy lol

Yes, when the other half is happy, all is well in the world. Happy wife = Happy life ... how true is that.

It's a core truth

I think I'm about done ripping for tonight, though ... but if I'm going to be on the computer I should just continue on, lol.
I've got to write out the bills yet so they can be in the mail tomorrow.

12:48 AM
ripping is a long haul. be devoted or fail my buddy told me while I was slogging through the beginning of week 2
I just realized I broke 100 badges
wow...that doesn't suck

woot
I've got 114 bronze ones ... :D

what's that, like 5% of your total
you have like 5000 badges, right? LOL

Yes, one-ups-man-ship
ROFL, uh, no.
I do have the most badges of anyone on the site ... but I think you are not far behind me.

@DucatiKiller checking now

cool

12:51 AM
156 total

I'm going to investigate and see where I'm at
I think I'm 3rd
that just doesn't seem right
that's crazy...
I do have one unique badge that no one on the site has
Archeologist

I had unique badges by about 4 or 5 of them ... then some whipper-snapper came in and duplicated me.
I think his username is some kind of bike or something .... I wonder who that could be

lol
I'm gold starved though
because....explosions

Great response

You picking up what I'm putting down?

1:07 AM
That was the autonomous landing rocket thingy, right?

yes
Elon...my hero

Whether it failed or not, it's still pretty awesome ... Wasn't the guidance or the rocket power which put it down.
It landed perfectly.

Not sure on that one. They did have a successful terrestrial landing.

The landing was perfect ... just wasn't stable when it got there, lol.
Sucks when one little part, which probably cost a buck 95, failed to work correctly and boom ... that's all she wrote.

It could be because it was on the barge. The camera being mounted on the barge wouldn't show any movement but I suspect that contributed to the result
that's how it works......oh the 50c something or other failed....damn o-rings...

1:15 AM
The commentary on that linked page said it was one of the struts failed to fully lock, which if you look at it, that's what it looks like happened. The landing itself looked spot on.

OMG....brutal. Just like you said. Some serrated locking mechanism.....

People on there were being pretty unforgiving.

Yup, I can see it now.
Haters

Exactly
I hate haters.

Elon Musk did what the US government tried and failed to do for 50 years

1:17 AM
Exactly

then he nails it after a few attempts.

Cannot hate the man for that ... plus he's doing it with private money, right?

yes, private money. He has government contracts for shuttling goods to the ISS
there may be some subsidy too. Since the US is now looking at orbital work as beneath them....but it's cheaper than what the US was spending to do it themselves.
So again. Kudos to Musk

And he's trying to make a rocket which will retrieve itself, IIRC.

I believe that is correct

1:20 AM
Pure Awesomeness

there's always the space SE if we're uncertain :)
I'm trying to go to other beta sites and vote and occasionally ask a question. Ppoggio lost her mind in the Gardening Meta
lol

Yah, those guys are probably just like EE.SE.

They have a lot of trivia/historical event questions too
It's a pretty good site
fun to read
24 new questions for today I think

kewl

I tried to have a very measured response to ppoggio's lost mind....lol
I go over to gardening and vote every day since J.Musser told his story of losing his top users. Brutal position to be in

1:33 AM
Hopefully I just fired them up over at Gardening.SE ... I pegged all three of their mods to make Ppoggio's Meta thread so it will show up on the front page.
I take it Ppoggio is female ... at least that's how I keep thinking of them ... probably wrong.

yes
I think I know her because of the aprilia question but Im not getting any info...We have mischievous females on our big group.

1:57 AM
I'm not happy about this question

Q: How to make a honda not sound like a ricer

user36537I'm buying a honda but one thing I hate is that really lawnmower like sound they all make. How can I either a. Make it quiet to make little to no sound. Or b give it a more masculine sound. Would I need a new exhaust and are there engine tune ups to reduce it.

What's up @BobCross -

I have to say that it makes me a feel a bit weird too. I'm half Japanese and have been dealing with that verbiage ALL MY LIFE...so I'm used to it but admittedly, it's up my ass a bit.

I'm flagging it.

You get that Flag Hammer out and do your thing!

2:03 AM
No one should feel uncomfortable when they come here.

Does that give the author the opportunity to reword the question or rebut the closing?

I spent my youth getting in fights over it and now I just don't want to be the guy flailing and complaining....and drawing attention to myself over it.

How can I have a car not sound like it has a fart can exhaust?

That sounds like a them problem. I left a comment saying focus on your problem.

thank you. I appreciate it. I really do.

2:05 AM
You should show your appreciation, Mister.
;-)

I'm a basic Northern European hybrid. One of the things that they remind me in diversity training is that it's okay to say "hey, that's BS" when it bothers someone else.

@DucatiKiller - I was wondering if you were part Japanese, considering you said you spent some time there as a kid.
I'm your basic Mutt ... hard to throw a stone at a certain group of individuals and not get hit by it.

Yah, it's been weird experience. NorCal is very diverse where I grew up but Phoenix and parts east are brutal. If your not in the majority, you will be reminded of it at least weekly with some remark. You just get used to it.

F that noise

2:08 AM
Get numb to it more like
Yah, I'm not big on it either. I went to Dallas once ... a lot of people there do not like those of the non-Caucasian variety.

yeah, it's dissapointing but you end up flowing to wonderful people as a result and have a higher level of gratitude for the good people show. So, it's a matter of perspective. If you speak up everytime you increase your chances of a physical altercation and Im not into that anymore. I'm 48 now.

Man I'm getting madder and madder

Stop it.

Anyway....TY Bob. I appreciate the thoughtfulness and it's super meaningful.
It's all good. You guys are good.

Chillio, my kind brother.

2:11 AM
You can feel good that you made my day. For real.
:-)

We do need to remember that people with harsh thoughts exist, but the they are in the minority. Those of the silent majority are kind of heart. It's the ones who are not so kind are the ones we hear all the time.

It's a me thing.

It's all good. Appreciate that there are those like you out there.

This guy was just being casually racist. Just sliding it in there. Like we would let it go past.

It's because it's so widely accepted as not racist

2:13 AM
We can only control ourselves, though. Cannot expect to control others.

It's called bias now

This is not the day for casual racism!

You are correct, kind sir.

Indeed!

But, no day should be a day for casual racism.

2:14 AM
All you have to do is think for two seconds "hm, how will this come across to any other person ever?!"

Or racism of any means.

Perhaps it's good reminder that there is still work to do for our society.

I get that. You get that. Ducati gets that. Some people out there just don't have a clue.

... I clearly have not had enough exercise this weekend. ;-)

Anger can't make it better. Thoughtful explanations yield a higher chance of introspection with them.

2:15 AM
ROFL ... I could apply that to the whole month.
Spot on

yes, my last quarter has been an exercise in lethargy.

Okay. Deep breath. Mind like water.

I need to get back on my exercise bandwagon.

Ducati can you read any Japanese characters?
I ask because I have a silly story.

Haha! I had a boss who had to slow me down sometimes ... she'd say, "Deep breath, Paul. Deep breath."

2:17 AM
a little, not much. My mom wanted me to be Americanized and wouldn't speak Japanese to me

Uh-oh, hopefully it doesn't involve a tattoo

She was born in Tokyo in 1927 came here 52 after the war and was worred about....racism so....

@DucatiKiller - That's too bad.

I can recognize enough Korean characters to slowly sound out words (that I can then say but probably not understand).

head and shoulders above me, Bob.

2:18 AM
Korean is phonetic language so a bit different foundation

We were coming back from SK some years back and passed through Tokyo airport.

I have a friend in S. Korea right now ... he's due back in May sometime.

The TVs all were in Japanese (duh) but they also had closed captioning turned on.

Haneda Airport....been there a few times
or did you goto the new one in Tokyo Bay?
Where they built the island for the airport

I was watching the captions go by trying to turn them into Korean without realizing it. They're just close enough that I though I was going insane.
;-)

2:19 AM
ROFL!
I bet you were

LMAO

The Korean road signs were super helpful (in Seoul). English and Hangul on same sign.

Japanese kanji is sooo vast. A symbol for everything. It was the Japanese way to ass out the poor and uneducated. The poor couldn't read the advanced kanji so it was a language for the upper class

I was traveling with guys who didn't even know how to say thank you. Very annoying.
Korean is very different. It's components that fit together. Truly genius for the guy who invented it long ago
I have a single sheet of paper cheat sheet. You can write any word using those pieces.

My Japanese friends that know Korean say it's a better language than Japanese....but they would whisper it in front of their parents....LOL

2:23 AM
Haha ... Yes I understand there is a bit of a divide there.

Heh. I know that I was terrible at haggling in Korea. The prices would drop when I trotted out my caveman Korean talk though.

You betcha....
Korean and Japanese....oil and water

And then I would buy more stuff. What am I going to do, carry a whole bunch of Won home?

@BobCross - I don't have any great stories like that from my foreign travels, lol.

BTW Korean jade really IS better than Chinese jade. ;-)

2:25 AM
I'll take your word for it ... It's all green to me.

@BobCross Yes, the Koreans agree with you...LOL

Korean jade (that I bought anyway) is a much paler green. The Lovely Wife approved.

Interesting.
some geological something or other

Like we were saying earlier: "Happy Wife; Happy Life"

@Paulster2 Indeed! I almost pinned the last one...

2:28 AM
The corollary to that is "don't show fear, they can smell it"

You aren't that far behind me in age, you realize, @DucatiKiller?

I thought you were younger

I don't think I told you guys I had my 51st at the beginning of January
Yes, I'm over that certain hill.

@BobCross It's true, my gal can smell tentativeness.

ROFL!!!!
That's funny

2:29 AM
Fear is like bacon
overwhelming

and I don't like either one.
(fear or bacon)

"Women always figure out the truth. Always." - Han Solo

Noice

LOL
and Han knows women.

<cough> knew <cough>

2:30 AM
Okay. This has been fun. Good night guys.

GN, Bob ... I need to be in bed myself.
4am comes early.

@BobCross Thanks man. Catch you later

@BobCross I knew it. Thanks for removing it! Have a good night sir.

GN all ... have sweet dreams of V8 powered Civic! Woot!

later buddy
happy trails to u

2:37 AM
have a good one man!

dude, that A pillar answer paid some dividends for you.

yeah lol

@JonathanMusso Did you get that drill bit out?

@DucatiKiller Actually...just about, lol. I was able to bore the hole with a bigger bit and smash the majority of the broken bit out. I have maybe...30 more minutes of rinsing and repeating

Oh man. Your smashing it through to the other side?

2:40 AM
Welding was an issue because of the size....there was literally nothing sticking out of the frame..

You will have to write what you did and award yourself the answer
I'm with you in spirit man
sounds tough

sure thing, the welding idea was great but the issue was I could not just get the bit because it was not protruding outwards.

@J.Musser - I'll see if I can write you a comprehensive how-to on the heads for your truck ... it will take me a couple of days, though.

Sharin the knowledge....that's love

Not sure if you got my ping earlier, but, you think Suzuki bikes will be around for a while in NA?

2:46 AM
Yes. They have renewed their efforts and signed some top riders for SuperCross and are back in MotoGP. They did a bankruptcy to reorganize their debt a few years ago and now they are back in N. American racing. Big factory efforts. So all the signs of stability are there.
So I think they will make it. We'll see.

Ok great to know, thanks.
I really love the look of the GXR naked bike. That's why I ask, lol.

Yeah, I'm happy about it. I'm a bit of a fan. If you look in my profile I've owned a ton of them. Even though I was a Honda mechanic
I love that thing too. I think it's supposed to have traction control.
That's my thing now, naked bikes.
so I love it

From the videos I have watched, it gets a decent review, but they all claim the Yamaha FZ-09 is better.
I don't like the look of the Yamaha though, the seat.

FZ09 is a good all around bike. Rode one last week.

sweet
I have never been on a sport bike

2:49 AM
Rips a great wheelie. It's a bit longer so the balance point is really wide.
Really, you need to fix that and check it out
Be sure to take your heart pills first. It will give you a rush like you've never had. Be sure your accelerating onto a freeway and just ....bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....through third gear.
which would probably be a 130mph or so
gotta bail...gal calling me for dinner. be bake later. Good luck w/ that bit.

sounds awesome, when the snow is gone I think I will do just that, lol.
enjoy man!

3:21 AM

Regarding the dry sump question, the M5 has an interesting wet sump setup which take a leaf out of dry sump design
It's a sort of hybrid design

2 hours later…

5:01 AM
Gentlemen I had placed a question in regards to a tractor motor with injectors that seem to have no seals. Please revisit and advise...

5:31 AM
@Paulster2 no
@Paulster2 That would be so awesome

9 hours later…
2:16 PM
@DucatiKiller I deleted the comment that you asked me to. Thanks for the good words! :-)

@Anarach - Exactly my thoughts on the 125cc EFI Scooter, lol.
Does a fuel injected scooter exist?

1 hour later…
3:28 PM
@JPhi1618 Good question!

3:44 PM
Either Community is being controlled by a human or (more likely) is a very, very well trained bot. The edit it did on Ducati's answer is pretty decent!
Next-level, as he would say ;)

Yea, that is a good edit - for a bot.
Next step - Community becomes self aware and starts answering questions on its own.

Community is and oddity. I've seen some nice edits from community on several questions.

I'd like to see IBM's Watson get let loose on one of the SE sites.

Yes, there are EFI scooters.

Example?

3:50 PM
The 'Elite' apparently

A Honda Element?

hehe
sorry
I'll find an actual model for you in a bit

Ha, no problem. It's not a pressing issue. I was just curious how small EFI engines got.
Relevant:

Hondas in Hondas
Their self replicating now. That's actually a mobile Honda scooter factory.

Friend of mine has an element and loves it. it can carry almost anything.

Underpowered, IMO, but it's a big box.

Here's another
The Honda CHF50 is a scooter made by Honda and marketed as the Metropolitan in the United States, the Jazz in Canada, the Scoopy in Australia and Asia, and the Crea Scoopy in Japan. The Metropolitan has typical fuel economy of 80–110 mpg-US (2.9–2.1 L/100 km; 96–132 mpg-imp). Offered in United States from 2002 to 2009, the Metropolitan was reintroduced in 2013 based on the fuel-injected and air-cooled NCH50 instead of the prior CHF50. == Design concept == While the CHF50 is one of several 49 cc scooters offered by Honda since the early 1960s, it is notable for its "classic" Vespa-inspired styling...

Man, 100mpg.

That's a lot of miles

So I had an answer that I didn't spend much time on because I thought the question wasn't going to get anything better... It ended up getting 2 other long answers and making it to HNQ.
I had one person edit my answer to change minor things, then someone today doing an edit to more or less put it back the way I had it to begin with.
And it's the lowest voted answer!
I guess some people just like to participate.

4:04 PM
They may just be trying to get the various badges too. Was it George doing the edit? He's been up into a bunch of questions lately.

No, it was on DIY - two random low-rep people.
Hey, your dry sump answer is on HNQ...

Excellent. Community thinks I deserve more upvotes
I just read the community edit. That's a little too elegant for me.

It's taking your flavor out of the answer?
"I would never phrase something like that"

Where's the humanity in community? It's as if it were a soulless piece of code editing peoples verbiage.

THERE IS NO HUMANITY ON SE!

4:11 PM
What does that make us?

Write binary in your sleep or GTFO!

OMG...The worm has turned?
WE are community......

That's OK - I soulessly edit other peoples code to my formatting rules. It's the only correct way to code.

It's a hall of mirrors...

Q: how often can a guy get a hair perm

curiousmind1995I'm a guy and I got a perm late November. Naturally my hair is a mess and having two cowlicks on the back of my head doesn't help. It literally sticks out all the time. So I went ahead and got a perm. I was pleased with my perm when I got it. It looked really good (about a month) but with time da...

NEVER.
That's the answer.

4:13 PM
OMG dude
I worked with this guy...long hair and a beard...I thought his hair was naturally curly.....until one day he told the whole crew during coffee break that he goes to an African Salon to get his hair done. ......................................

That first sentence just doesn't even compute.
Ha, that's crazy.
I wonder if a dude-perm smells as bad as a real perm.
And @BobCross is trying to understand what he walked in on.

He lost all respect. He had a tongue ring. You can just imagine the comments going on a construction site with that one :D

Indeed.

@JPhi1618 dude this sort of thing barely registers on my nerd scale. Maybe a two to three. ;-)

Yea, I forget you're very seasoned...

4:18 PM
I just gave a phone screen. Last question for my intern candidate was "do you play video games?" "Yes! I'm currently playing words words words excited nerdery!" Bob writes HIRE on the sheet of paper. ;-)

haha awesome

She was already pretty solid. That makes for a good story though.

LOL...Excellent
Howdy @BobCross

In other news, latent sexism in my field? Still strong! :-p
Hey @DucatiKiller

Man, I'd hate to be a chick software developer.
(Am I doin it right?)

4:22 PM
@BobCross Latent sexism is strong everywhere I think.
Being a female in IT would be a brutal life.

I agree. I also do not accept. As I've said before, F that noise.

Agreed

My boss's boss's boss asked me if he thought we had a problem. I asked him if we were 50:50. How about supervisors? He rocked back in his seat. Yeah dude, everywhere.

Do you think that 50:50 is even acheivable?

Yep. Because it's reality.

4:25 PM
I think it'd be super hard to even find that many female applicants, no?

No.
They're out there. Maybe they don't want for position X because they know it's a problem organization.

If you do a lot of gaming the chat rooms can get brutal when a female enters. If a female writes articles about gaming she can get death threats.
We have a long way to go to change that paradigm.

I'm paying some dues right now getting the word out. My last three interns: all great on paper, all great over the summers, all doing great things now, all women.

Do you think that recruiters taking women seriously in IT is a part of the problem? We never seem to get any female leads, and we're small enough that we wouldn't have a reputation.

@JPhi1618 it's everywhere. All aspects have problems. It's worth starting small because any progress is better than none.

4:29 PM
We are a consulting organization in IT infrastructure. About 150 people. We have a female VP of Ops and female project managers but no female engineers or techs.
I will say that I only see female resumes a couple of times a month
@all Time to make the donuts. I'll catch you all later. Say hi to @community for me. I think she likes me.

Ha, will do.

Heh

Does @DucatiKiller work at a Krispy Kreme? Always makin' donuts...

Ancient Dunkin donuts commercial.
From back when we had to watch commercials. Dark times.

Ah, ok. I forgot about commercials... It's funny, my two little girls get confused when we watch TV and see them.
"Where's the show!?!"

5:04 PM
@MaxGoodridge, Thanks for the bounty on the tire naming question! Woot!

thought I would pop in and throw this in here...and then bail :-)

Q: Ford Tractor 5600

DeeThis is a older tractor. My question relates to the fuel system. The older fuel injectors don't have any external seals? All of them seat and 3 don't leak but one does. I was looking for a seal but it didn't have any not even on the tip. So I'm wondering if they have a torque spec or how does i...

later

@JPhi1618 Yeah no problem! No one else answered and I wouldn't like to see it go to waste!

I'm pretty sure of the answer - just hard to find sources on stuff like that.

5:58 PM
@Zaid Thats a good point, but I like the answer that has been posted so should I accept it and ask it as a new question?
