@TopinFrassi It still says Tomorrow. Wait at least until it says a number of hours left.

:26354235 If it works, that's what we are here for.
What's the question?

I'll just post a question... I didn't realize you could post the whole program on this SE

OK, @TopinFrassi, it says 23 hours. Just do it before it runs out now.
Yep. Site laws - whole programs welcome.

12:09 AM
@ekaj yeah, some people even post like 60kb of code!

No minimal examples.

Evening :)
@JeroenVannevel any chance you visit FOSDEM 2015?

Depends
is it a brothel?

:D
www.fosdem.org

12:13 AM
That actually looks quite interesting

It is.
I always come home with my bags filled with goodies :D

and at that moment I am just graduated and not yet at work again
I'll keep it in the back of my mind

But there are some interesting talks and they have a track about testing, which I believe is your domain?
+ it's completely free

Yeah I do like testing although now I'm more interested in language design and compilers
Or IoT

I like refactorings and code manipulations.
I'll probably end up as a meta-programmer.

12:15 AM
Seems like there's plenty in there for everyone -- I'll put serious consideration in it

Well I'm mainly gonna go for the Python track and big data track

remind me every now and then if you can

I will.
After building a small-C compiler for a course, I kinda have had it with compilers.

@JeroenVannevel Should I ask @SimonForsbergMcFeely to have @Duga ping you with the link every day?

haha, that must be some overkill :p

Q: Tips on this script to automate a Wordpress install?

ekajI do not have a whole lot to do over winter break, so I wrote this little script to automate a Wordpress install (currently can only install once instance) on a fresh Debian server (tested, working with Wheezy). It may be pretty sloppy because it's the first thing I've actually tried, but it's a ...

I've got this amazing chrome extension
Snooze
You can snooze tabs for a few different amounts of times
and it will wake it up again after that
I set that page to re-appear every saturday at 18:00

That's quite handy.

Try it out -- you too @skiwi -- it's really useful
now I have a lot less tabs hanging around
and I won't lose them due to reboots

I should switch to chrome :/

@DJanssens Try Dragon. It can run Chrome extensions, but is nicer.

12:20 AM
I also need the doge plugin/extension that (I forgot who) lately showed

EthanBierlein showed you
@DJanssens google chrome canary

Right, thanks @Quill-HATMANIAC
@Hosch250 can you link it, googling dragon is not that effective :D

I use their IceDragon browser, which runs FF extensions.

@Quill-HATMANIAC canary seems like the newest browser of Chrome (beta?)

12:23 AM
Developer build, I guess
It's good for web devs because it gets the latest ES* progress
@SirPython my final examplar is currently broken, but the rest stands. I'm scrambling for a fix, should be a few minutes

@Quill-HATMANIAC I understand. Take your time, you still have my vote.

there we go, fixed
also everyone saw the Choose your own swag meta post, yeah?

@DJanssens It's basically their daily build running through some CI and continuous deploy

12:38 AM
yep it pretty much always says update at restart program

Cool. I was not aware of its existence

Is it impolite to remind an OP of the voting feature if they accepted an answer but did not cast a vote?

(sometimes they may not have rep reqs)
and I'd say yes
it'd get naruto'd and end up here anyway

wow, that was cool. Thanks @zak

That thing is a fireball.

well at 6k km/h

Zak
Glad to be of service :)
Moment of truth in 4 minutes. If they re-land it, that's the revolution right there.

they're trying to reland it?

Zak
This is attempt #3 (or 4) I think

1:37 AM
Guys, Tail Recursion in F# is pretty slick.

Zak
Sure, but not quite as cool as ROCKETS!

@EBrown can you give an example :-)

let factorial x =
    // Keep track of both x and an accumulator value (acc)
    let rec tailRecursiveFactorial x acc =
        if x <= 1 then
            acc
        else
            tailRecursiveFactorial (x - 1) (acc * x)
    tailRecursiveFactorial x 1

Zak
This was the previous attempt to re-land the falcon 9:

That's F#, which when compiled and examined turns into the following C#:
public static int tailRecursiveFactorial (int x, int acc)
{
    while (true)
    {
        int num = x;
        if (num <= 1)
        {
            return acc;
        }
        acc *= x;
        x--;
    }
}

Zak
1:39 AM
landing now

Basically, the entire F# is rewritten into a loop body.

They did it.

Zak
FALCON 9 HAS LANDED!

wow that's ... nice..

It's a heavily optimized tail recursion example, but I think it's pretty cool.

1:41 AM
Is SpaceX the first group of people to do this?

Zak
Nobody has ever done this.
It's impossible to overstate how huge it is.
Basically, it costs about the same to build a rocket as to build a Boeing 747
Yet, a 747 will fly thousands of times, so you can buy a ticket for $20
Whereas (until today), a rocket flies just once, so a ticket costs $100 Million
If you can re-use a rocket, and you just have to re-fuel it each time.
Then you can (reasonably) expect to get into space for 1/100th of the cost.

except the top half breaks off
your logic isn't 100%

Zak
The bottom part is the part that landed

That's amazing.

does the top half contain the satellites?

Zak
1:46 AM
Yep.

interesting interesting
should be interesting to see this hit the news in 32~ hours

Zak

lol

Zak
Stage 1 is that *huge* Orange fuel tank / rockets

That just might have been photoshopped

1:47 AM
probably

Zak
Stage 2 is the shuttle.
Shuttle was re-usable. Stage 1 was not.
@HATMAN Maybe, just a little :)

well stage 1 contained the shuttles to be deployed didn't it?

Zak
Stage 1 is a massive fuel tank attached to some number of rocket engines
For the falcon 9, 9 engines
Stage 2 is a (much) smaller fuel tank, with a single engine, and a payload at the very top.
Total mission success :)

yes, quite exciting!

Zak
"the goal is Mars, because *nobody* wants to go back to Jakku" - awesome sign off.

OH WHAT

Zak
@EBrown Did you miss the excitement?

@Zak No, I'm actually on-topic (for once).

Q: Roughly what percentage (by cost) of a Rocket Launch does stage 1 of the Falcon 9 Rocket represent?

ZakAs of a short time ago, SpaceX made history as the first entity *ever* to successfully re-land the initial stage of an orbital rocket. Up until this point, the dominating factor in the cost of Rocket Launches has been that you have to build a new Rocket for every launch (roughly equivalent in co...

Edward, is that an NPN or PNP transistor in your avatar? And why do you have that?
/me just being nosy...

Zak
Truly awe-inspring:
(That's launch and successful landing)

@holroy NPN. Glad too, to see that others are excited about the SpaceX accomplishment.
I'd love to see video of the landing.

Zak
@Edward It's all over youtube.

@Zak Whoa!

Wasn't they second? I vaguely remember some other firm claiming to be the first a few weeks ago

The reason I have an NPN transistor is that, like me, it's old but useful. :)

LOL

Zak
@holroy Timeline goes something like this:

Hmm... I should possibly find something ancient then like a punch card...

Zak
2-3 years ago, SpaceX builds a "small" experimental rocket which goes to edge of space and successfully re-lands several times
couple of Months ago, Blue Origin launches a "small" rocket to just-past the edge of space and hails it as some huge, unprecedented achievement.

2:47 AM
lol
Exactly

Zak
Compared to a fully-fledged orbital rocket, those 2 are playthings.
The name "Grasshopper" sums it up pretty perfectly IMO
@JeffBezos Not quite "rarest". SpaceX Grasshopper rocket did 6 suborbital flights 3 years ago & is still around. https://t.co/6j9ERKCNZl

I'm seriously not trying to start a flame war of sorts, but it could be the Blue Origin I read about. But are you saying that the '"small" experimental rocket' from SpaceX was up several years ago, and that is similar to the Blue Origin thingy?

Zak
Pretty much.

OK... Thanks for the info... I've just read both of them rather quickly...

Zak
Blue origin *technically* went into space, by a fraction, whereas SpaceX technically didn't.
Except SpaceX did it 3 years ago.

2:53 AM
I guess a lot of this is marketing at its best.

Zak
Pretty much.

yeah

Not just marketing. It's a pretty impressive accomplishment.

Zak
Now what happened today, that really *was* huge

But according to the little I've read it seems like the SpaceX Falcon9 is the most useful of them for doing heavy stuff, whilst the Blue Origin seems more like a space tourist venture. Yet again, I've not read that much on this.

2:56 AM
I tend to think that every successful mission to space and back is pretty impressive. But yes, the SpaceX flight launched 11 satellites, so it's kind of the "space truck" that the shuttle never really was.

Zak
@holroy Blue Origin is trying to get there form the ground up (sub-orbital flight --> developing a new rocket engine for the ULA --> who knows?)
Whereas SpaceX is just going straight at it (Build a fully-fledged launch vehicle --> get paid to take stuff to space --> Use said funding to develop a re-usable rocket)
Blue origin is safer. SpaceX (was) much more of a gamble.
After their first 3 launches blew up, they literally had to either have a successful launch, or the company was bankrupt. That was back in 2010.

They've had, what 20+ launches now, right?

Zak
Yep.
I think today was #21 (but don't quote me on that)

Oopss... Just did: Zak says it was #21! :-)

3:01 AM
My recollection is 4 launch disasters, but I'm not sure about that.

This question is probably better suited for: codereview.stackexchange.comSam 59 secs ago

(Googling now...)

Hmm... 23 completed missions...

Zak
At the start: 3 failures followed by succes on #4. Followed by (I think) 18/19 successful missions) Then failure in June, and back to success today.
@holroy There we go, #4-#21 = 18 successful launches

Naturally, Wikipedia has a timeline:
This is a list of missions, historic and planned, for the SpaceX Falcon 9 family of launch vehicles. The four versions of the rocket are the Falcon 9 v1.0 (now retired), currently-operational Falcon 9 v1.1, and the in-development Falcon Heavy and Falcon 9-R. == Notable missions == === Maiden launch === The Falcon 9 maiden launch occurred on June 4, 2010 and was deemed a success, placing the test payload within 1 percent of the intended orbit. The second stage engine performed a short second burn to demonstrate its multiple firing capability. The rocket experienced, "a little bit of rol...

3:04 AM
Wikipedia says that today was no 20: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

Zak
That would be for the Falcon 9

That's just the big rocket launches. They had earlier ones.

Zak
First few launches were an earlier version.
"Falcon 1 made five flights in 2006–2009. On 28 September 2008, the Falcon 1 succeeded in reaching orbit on its fourth attempt, becoming the first privately funded, liquid-fueled rocket to do so."

Pretty good graphic showing the difference:
or not...

Zak
3:07 AM
That's falcon 1 on the far left...

There it is! :)
So can it jump to hyperspace like the Millennium Falcon?
(Just watched the new Star Wars movie this evening)

Thoughts?

Zak
Roughly the same size as GrassHopper and Blue Origin's rocket (I think called New shepherd?)

Yo @DanPantry, you around?

@Edward I hardly doubt it! :-D

Zak
3:10 AM
As you can see. Landing that, and landing the Falcon 9 are 2 *entirely* different levels of achievement

I've got to get to a cinema soon and see the new one...

Zak
@holroy Yes, you do!

It's great fun. I remember seeing the first one 38 years ago.

Zak
@Quill-HATMANIAC IMO, if there were no prequels, I would've thought "This is solidly cool, but nothing extraordinary". Given the comparison to the prequels, and the effects of nostalgia, it felt awesome (Even if the plot became *very* predictable by about a third of the way through)

@Zak That's fair.

3:13 AM
Apparently JJ Abrams isn't doing the next one

Michael Bay is doing the next one.

Zak
@Edward Not sure if good thing or bad thing.

(just kidding. Ow! Stop throwing things at me!)

Zak
Oh, phew!
Still, if they're going to keep making *even bigger* super weapons, they might just need his flair for the overly-excessive
I did like that the characters felt far more fleshed out though.

I wonder if any of the defense contractors said, "You know, we could also build a whole bunch of smaller weapons for half the cost."
@Zak I think that's mostly your memory filling in the blanks.
Not much in that department happened on screen if you think about it.
But don't listen to me -- it's just the popcorn talking

Zak
3:17 AM
Sure, but it was enough for people to actually seem like actual people, rather than a collection of stereotypes.

the climatic scene at the end was pretty risky too

Zak
Like what's his name, Kylo Ren. Actually has a personality. Relationshhip with the overall-master: seems like an actual mentorship.

@Zak Yes, that's true. More true of this one than some of the recent movies and in that regard more like the first two IMHO.

Zak
Plus, I liked stormtroopers having some personality too :)

Just in the poorly run units.
:)

3:21 AM

@Duga for the win!

Zak
Hmmm. Falcon 9 uses Linux as its operating system...

yeah, some of the bigger companies make specialised distros for big projects like that
For example: Large Hadron Collider Memory storage runs on a specialised Linux Distro

Just a simple subroutine call, right? launch and return.

I propose launch && return

3:27 AM
var rocket = new Falcon9();
rocket.launch(function(){
    rocket.onload = function(){
        this.satellites.release();
    }
}, function(){
    this.return();
};

There needs to be a refuel() member function.

Nah... Not javascript... Linux -> Bash! :)

actually just runs on JavaScript
IE8 compliant even

What about whiteSPACE
Is that a viable language?

@Quill-HATMANIAC That's how the first three blew up...

Probably runs on C++, these days everything does
Even jQuery is written in C++

That is kind of sad, even though it most likely is the truth. I'm not extremely fond of C++

I find it quite useful, but have spent a lot of time getting there.
It's easy to shoot yourself in the foot with C++.
(for the record, I recommend against that.)

To me C++ is the ugly bastard son of C. You can do whatever in it, but it'll never look good!

well that's harsh

3:35 AM
@holroy What's your preferred language?

I've seen too much of it... Sorry, if it seems harsh

I'm kind of multi-lingual, so it kind of depends on the task at hand.

You accidently create a dozen instances of yourself and shoot them all in the foot. Providing emergency medical assistance is impossible since you can't tell which are bitwise copies and which are just pointing at others and saying "That's me, over there."

3:36 AM
But I kind of like C#, and recently grown a little fond of Python for some stuff.

@Quill-HATMANIAC good morning
wtf @Zak it's 3am go to bed

@holroy I'm not a Microsoft captive and so haven't really looked much at C#. Python is useful for a lot of things, but neither of those is very good for embedded systems where I spend my time.

Good morning

In the C'ish world, C# is the clear favorite. I haven't touched embedded system in quite a while, but I do believe I would prefer pure C rather than C++, if that had been an option. But I do suspect that most of the libraries are written in C++ so you have to use them.

@Zak I even watched the CRS-4 launches (both scrubbed attempts and then the actual launch)

I'm not a fan of Microsoft either, but they have actually done some good stuff in C#. Cleaned up the language a bit!

@RonBeyer This is not the actual code. I just created an example of the issue I'm running into with my current project. So, I don't think can I post it at code review.. :) — user3587180 16 secs ago

You locate the Gun class, but discover that the Bullet class is abstract, so you extend it and write the missing part of the implementation. Then you implement the ShootAble interface for your foot, and recompile the Foot class. The interface lets the bullet call the doDamage method on the Foot , so the Foot can damage itself in the most effective way. Now you run the program, and call the doShoot method on the instance of the Gun class. First the Gun creates an instance of Bullet , which calls the doFire method on the Gun . The Gun calls the hit(Bullet) method on the Foot , and the i

I used to have fairly long hair. Now I keep it as short as you see in my photo because it 1) suits me 2) makes it easier for people to take me seriously and 3) I can get away with not having a shower some days...

@DanPantry Mine's a little shorter than that, but I make up for it with a mustache and beard.
