maybe someone followed one of your links and answered a question from outside the network?

Interesting idea!

That sounds a little farfetched @Malachi

I am going to be sharing all the posts I can. like I normally do, lol

new hat... http://stackoverflow.com/users/2685998/aureliano-far-suau?tab=summary#winter-bas‌h

Didn't even know that hat existed.

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 3 mins ago, by Ilmari Karonen
@hichris123 Cool! Based on the image, I'm assuming it's a reference to the Royal Navy officer, and not to the serial killer.
Anyway, I guess Amazing Grace could be something like "downvote, edit, upvote"

you reckon?
still seems way too easy

Maybe date-based? Because two occurrences today, and we haven't seen it before

So is getting the Edward Edwards hat as simple as winning a bounty? Perhaps it has to be the first bounty you earn of the site.

9:41 PM
@Doorknob冰 Wasn't there a hat like that last year?

Oh, maybe

@Eran what's the Edward Edwards hat?

@BalarkaSen It's a new secret hat that was recently given.

wow, didn't know about that
looks like secret hats aren't short in supply

@BalarkaSen Nope.
Plenty to go around.
Plenty of people with no idea how they got em as well.

9:47 PM
indeed
I have answered a qn with no comments on answer or question with +3. wonder if I can make it to +4 and get a 007. hopefully no one is going to ruin it by posting a comment.

@BalarkaSen +4 now :)

A: Winter Bash 2015 Secret Hats

Quill - HAT MANIACAmazing Grace It looks like there's only a few users to get it so far, and we don't have a cause yet. Suspicions lay with adding and removing down/up votes.

... if an answer meets the 007 criteria, but someone comments before I get the hat, do I still get it? >_<

yes
(I'd assume)
@Pops: if you meet the criteria for a hat, but before it lands in your inbox the criteria is invalidated, do you still get the hat?

10:01 PM
Generally, yes. Slightly longer answer here.

@Doorknob冰 ^

@Pops I don't see anything there that address what happens if you would have gotten the hat, but you no longer meet the criteria when the cron job for awarding the hat runs

Oh, I didn't see Doorknob's original question. I get what you're asking about now.
I think the system "re-enacts history," so to speak, so it would see the seven votes and award you the hat before seeing the comment, but I can't be 100% sure.

if someone wants to try the bounties thing, I've got enough CR rep to try it

@Quill-HATMANIAC But Mast neither received nor offered a bounty

10:08 PM
for Edward Edwards

@Barry Nop.

@Quill-HATMANIAC Well I haven't earned a bounty yet on CR... only offered

May have something to do with this question:

Q: Hat counter has lost track

MastI just noticed the following on the Code Review Winterbash leaderboard: Now, if my math is correct, TopinFrassi has 5 hats and rolfl has 4 hats. Why doesn't the leaderboard agree with me here, is Hairboat's Revenge not counted while shown? My fellow Code Reviewers blame caching, but we alway...

Not sure.

Edward Edwards was a serial killer tho

Is the score count 11/-1 on that by chance?
Perhaps it's about relatively well scoring posts while having at least one downvote.

10:11 PM
@Barry it's about the sailor
That would make sense, considering I got one recently for something @Mast

Perhaps Pops gave it away:

Downvoted, then swapped to upvoting

Zak
Hi

@Mast I did what?

A downvote being turned into an upvote after an edit?

@Pops It appears all those who won the Amazing Grace hat posted a bug report on Meta SE, and the status was handled in some way (declined, handled, planned)

10:14 PM
Just thinking out-loud.

except the one that won it on SO

@Barry Throwing another theory right out of the window.

@Barry who won it on SO?

Q: What are the requirements to get the "Weed Eater" hat?

DavidThe hat's description says answer a question qualifying for the Tumbleweed badge that gets accepted During the winter bash, I answered a question that is a tumbleweed, and it got accepted; yet I did not get the hat. However this guy answer here and did get the hat. (What was the difference?...

10:14 PM
@Pops Does not appear that this is true, unless there's some major caching going on. Oh well.

> Always blame caching.

@Eran You said that so matter-of-factly you almost convinced me. But... newp.

Among others.

Seems that hats load, but don't necessarily go away...

@barry that user also posted a bug report, only on Meta SO, and it was handled as status-by-design.

10:16 PM

@FlagAsSpam Make it a bug report and see if you get Amazing Grace in the process.

That happened with me too.

But I think it has something to do with votes, not with bugs.

@Eran mine was a day later
I hope it was okay to quote you @Pops:

A: What are the requirements to get the "Weed Eater" hat?

Quill - HAT MANIACComing from Pops, when I enquired about a question that was previously a Tumbleweed: You need to answer a question that is currently a Tumbleweed. The question you linked as an example earned its author a Tumbleweed badge at some point in the past, but was since visited more and upvoted a bun...

Aww. You stole my potential 007!

@Quill-HATMANIAC I should of read the transcript before asking!

@Mast Posted - I didn't really have much to say, though...

I'll take Amazing Grace is claimed for Archimedes then

Just kinda: "Yeah, so, this happens."

I'm back to top of network leaderboard!

Q: Hats Load on Pages, but don't always go away

FlagAsSpamI had an interesting problem with hats loading oddly this afternoon: When I changed the hats on a separate tab, the hats loaded in, but never left, which was awkward for all of us.

I'm back!

I got Sun Wukong on SO for the 'how to stop mischief' post

Yay!

Zak
@Quill-HATMANIAC Of course. I posted a meme about her just the other day. damn.

I know, I was there

10:22 PM
Y'know, time was, multiple people could win Eureka for the same hat.... if they e-mailed us before announcing it publicly, or if it was a mod pinging us in the mod chat (where regular users wouldn't be able to see it). Theoretically still possible but people are posting to the main Meta SE question so quickly now that I doubt it would happen.

well you're here, and in tavern, so that might be true

@Pops hmm

Maybe we shouldn't have a dedicated "secret hats" meta question / chatroom next year...

@Pops Therefore, mods who want to discuss hats -> to a secret room.

can you not pls
some of us don't have blue privs

10:23 PM
@Pops I tried that last year, never head anything back. :(

@Pops Good point - now that I've got my Eureka, I'll just post all my theories as soon as I have them :)

:P

@David Hrm. In that case we just screwed up and I'm sorry.

@MikeMiller lol

Great
What hats have been confirmed?

10:24 PM
@Pops I got over it, after 6ish months. :)

lol

(Or you were so wildly mistaken that we thought you were joking... but probably that first thing, where we screwed up.)

@HATMAN Read MSE, it's all there.

Do they say which ones are confirmed?

so @pops, can you comment on:
5 mins ago, by Quill - HAT MANIAC
I'll take Amazing Grace is claimed for Archimedes then

10:25 PM
Not as far as I know.

@Pops it was about the camaleon (and I was right)

Zak
@Pops How specific does one have to be to get archimedes?

huh, I had thought Bluefeet's comment was pretty much saying 'yep, that's right'

Zak
Do you have to account for all edge cases?

> 1996: USS Hopper (DDG-70) was launched. Nicknamed Amazing Grace, it is on a very short list of U.S. military vessels named after women.

10:26 PM
The way I've been doing it, everything you say must be entirely correct and not include anything wrong. I've been a bit lenient about whether you have to get all the smallest details right.

Did we boat something?

@Mast Uh. I didn't.

Er, that's redundant. Rather, you have to hit all the main triggers, and not include any triggers that don't actually apply.

ok, all main true triggers and no false triggers

tpu and no fps

10:28 PM
How about 'Users who post bug reports that end up actual bugs and not by design, or rejected'

@Quill-HATMANIAC She was just explaining the meaning of the hat name.

ah, okay

Zak
Is there any way to search users by a specific hat?

ps when did these two new hats surface?

So I need 007, Archimedes, and Amazing Grace
@David What is the other one?

10:29 PM
@Zak Does SEDE do hats?

is archimedes for Edward Edwards claimed yet?

^^

jeez, slow down

@MikeMiller nah, you already have more hats then us.

A: How can I spot the Winterbash related mischief going on?

Quill - HAT MANIACHats are fun! But low quality posts, and off-topic mischief are not. Here's a list of the common hats that may cause mischief and how to spot it: You can take a look at the full list here of (non secret)hats here. Timey Wimey: this hat is received by editing old posts, so you may find users ...

I love it
They gave me Sun Wukong, for it, and commented it

@Pops Edward Edwards is certainly related to bounties, but I think it is for successfully collecting a bounty. See this: "Admiral Edward Edwards (1742–1815) was a British naval officer best known as the captain of HMS Pandora,[1] the frigate which the Admiralty sent to the South Pacific in pursuit of the Bounty mutineers."

that's hilarious

Am I on the right track?

Why don't we work it ourselves instead of asking for hints or answers?

@HATMAN too, easy.

10:33 PM
6 hours ago, by Pops
I was gonna say, when we get a bit further in, you might get hints, but it's only day two, people.

Maybe Edward Edwards is about applying successful bounties to questions which didn't have already had them

lol, ok

Otherwise we'll just have to give Pops the rest of the Archimedes hats.

true

@Pops: You should get balpha to let you sit in multiple bathtubs.

10:34 PM
whats he gonna do with so many bathtubs?

Hey, yeah... I am pretty sure I know what all the secret hat triggers are. Bee arr bee, awarding myself 59 2 Archimedeses.

Can someone link me the Edwards dude's profile?

@Quill-HATMANIAC I doubt it, a ton of people tried posting bounties
@Pops XD

@Pops nice troll

@Pops so there are 59 hidden hats! :)

10:35 PM
So how do you get Amazing Grace?

@David Dangit!

@FlagAsSpam get gud

@FlagAsSpam Randomly go about your business on an SE site?

@Quill-HATMANIAC I think you mean:
git gud

have ninja eyes and spot bugs everywhere

10:36 PM
Oh, wait, don't forget to git rekt first.

basically just use the SE platform with no mercy
git butthurt

Huh

@Mast have you done anything on the data explorer today?

Amazing Grace: for finding a successful bug that gets fixed/rolled it and receiving nice question in the process

Ohhh. So, alright.
Kewl, I guess.

I can't help it, I'm juts addicted to hats. -__-. Can I get SE to pay for my rehab visits after Winterbash is over? — Quill - HAT MANIAC 6 secs ago

@Quill-HATMANIAC no. The user on SO had a post marked [status-bydesign].

@pops what do you think: can I get paid rehab visits after this?

Yes. But you're responsible for finding a clinic that accepts Unicorn Dollars.

one user didnt have a post on Meta

it hasn't been verified, and I haven't got archimedes, so I can assume failure

@Quill-HATMANIAC that is not it

Perhaps it has something to do with the [meta-tag:status-bydesign]

I don't have a question tagged by design
I have a completed one

It seems exceedingly unlikely that there are hats which are almost tautologically only available on Meta.SE.

10:50 PM
I added something to your answer @Quill-HATMANIAC

We haven't verified it yet @Malachi

Daaaayum.
Do I get a hat for being the 1500th upvoter of the FAQ?
(removed?)

I thought you said "did I get a hat for..."?
Mis-read.

@FlagAsSpam Whoa!

Oh.
As @El'endiaStarman pointed out, I'm actually the 1510th, but I upvoted to make it 1500.
I was likely the first to vote it to that point.
in The Nineteenth Byte, 1 min ago, by El'endia Starman
There's a Chrome extension that lets you see the vote-breakdown.
Is this supposed to be a thing? ^

Yeah, I saw the code a little while ago

11:29 PM
@FlagAsSpam how does it do that?

I'm guessing some form of SQL is involved. o.o But that's kinda stupid how there's a workaround for a mod thingy.
To be fair, it's a pointless restriction.
But still.

um no, it's a javascript thing

@Quill-HATMANIAC How it do?

@FlagAsSpam that is not a mod thing. any high rep user can see vote counts

@David With the number of mods we have these days, I don't know how "private" that really is, but sure.

@Pops ok will do

Q: Names can be hidden under hats in chat

MastIf a user types a couple of lines right after each other in chat, the avatar grows to it's maximum size. So does the hat. Because of the size of the mask and the short length of the name, the name gets hidden by the hat. This can't possibly be by design.

@Mast was it that question or your one yesterday that got you the hat?

@David Heck should I know ^^
It's a secret hat, they forgot to tell me how I got it.
Ask @Quill-HATMANIAC

11:50 PM
@MikeMiller I'm a magical JS dev, so I'm rewriting this atm for every post on the page

well, you would know at what time you got it, compared to this question and your last and their vote counts.

Mine was yesterday and was the one on my profile about the hats staying in the same spot on iOS
