@Cerberus Boo!

3:30 AM
Is asking a question about what ":3" and ":S" mean on topic? I see it kind of as asking about a slang term, but it's not technically English. Ok to ask or not?

Hi!

@Cerberus Hi!

@John I'm not sure.
Some people are a bit close-happy on this site.

@Cerberus You're almost a 20k! You can't be not sure! :P

You could ask on meta.english.stackexchange whether it is on topic for this site.
@John Hah, you'd think so!
But, alas.
It is all rather arbitrary to me.

3:38 AM
@Cerberus A saddeningly large part of the network is that way.

@John Yeah, you get that feeling too?
It usually doesn't bother me personally, but I sometimes feel bad for new users.
They get scared off by closings.

@Cerberus Actually I was just talking about that over on the bridge with a guy from PSE.

PSE?

@Cerberus I still have bad memories of my first questions on SE. They were both closed rather fast.
@Cerberus Programmers.stackexchange.com :)

Ah!
@John Yeah I can imagine.
Well, the site is what our Makers wanted it to be.
Especially Jeff.
But asking your real question on Meta can be a nice trick to circumvent the system.

3:41 AM
@Cerberus That cannot be emphasized enough. "The community is you" isn't really true. Which I'm ok with, I just wish they would be a bit more consistent.

@John "Progse" ;-P

@Cerberus I was actually thinking about doing that. :P

@John Agreed, but Shog will probably disagree, hehe!
Hi Shog.

'evening, @Cerberus

@Shog9 That sounds funny and it's 3 too many characters. :P
Oh yeah, and hi @Shog9.

3:42 AM
's why I like it...

Sounds like proxy.

@John, check the faq - there's a bullet list of topics that are on-topic for the site. Does your question fit?

@Shog9 It falls under usage. But I'm still a bit worried as it's still not technically English.

And if it makes you feel any better, I've asked five questions on Programmers.SE - all of them have been closed. Four have been deleted...

@Shog9 I can think of three bullet point sit might conceivably fall under, then different people will interpret them differently.
@Shog9 Haha, that does in fact make me feel better!
Nothing personal, of course. You know.

3:46 AM
@John I'm skeptical (sounds more like "'Net / txtspk culture" to me), but my personal philosophy is, make up your own mind and then act accordingly. If others disagree, make your case, try to convince them otherwise, but be prepared to abide by their decision.

I wonder what will happen to the single-word requests.
Haven't been following your thread, but I agreed with most of what you said.

@Cerberus I've straight-up told the progse mods before, "You'll finally have a quality site when a recalc leaves me with 0 rep".

@Shog9 I really, really hope you mean 1 rep, not 0.

@waiwai933 HA! Good catch

@Shog9 Heh. It was that bad, huh.
Hail, Constitutionalist!

3:49 AM
@Cerberus Well... A lot of folks - me included - signed onto the site as a way to sorta do all the stuff we weren't supposed to do on SO. Argue, language-hate, war stories, GTKY, etc.

finds Shog9's MSO profile, glances behind him

;-P

@Shog9 Hmm that sounds...paradoxical, but OK.

@Cerberus Well, the original charter for the site was "Not Programming Related" - named after the off-topic close reason, stuff that cannot and should not be asked on SO. Which is good fun and stuff, but doesn't exactly make for anything useful.

Huh, that was the charter for SO?

3:52 AM
No, for Programmers

Oh!
I see.

Not Programming Relatedprogrammers.stackexchange.com

Launched Q&A site for expert programmers interested in discussions that are only indirectly related to programming.

Then I got the paradox right.

@Shog9 Well ok, I took your advice. We'll see how it goes.

Then what is it for?

3:54 AM
@John Best of luck...

@Shog9 Thanks. I have a feeling I'll need it...

A close vote already?

Right.
So it changes every week?
@John Not mine!
I told you, people are quite close-happy here.

@Cerberus Not quite that bad. It took a hard left back about a year ago, and has been refined several times since.

3:56 AM
Ugh.

The problem is, most of what's on-topic there now has never been off-topic on Stack Overflow - so there's a bit of an identity crisis.

That is confusing.

On the one hand, you're more likely to find people willing to discuss, say, the more abstract points of development methodologies or some funky design pattern than on SO. On the other hand, you're more likely to find more people willing to give you a straight-up answer to any sort of concrete design question on SO.

Okay.
I am not a programmer so I wouldn't appreciate the difference. But I see what you mean.

It's sort of like... SO has a ton of folks who just eat and breathe code and everything that goes with it, while Progse has a larger percentage of users who really don't care to spend their free time coding, but will happily do some armchair quarterbacking on your behalf.

4:09 AM
So the workmen and the Lords each have their own site, huh?

4:44 AM
Interesting way of looking at it... I'll have to throw that in somewhere :-P

6 hours later…
11:11 AM
Hello all

Q: Usage of "And" in the beginning of a sentence

TimSince I first learned English, I have been holding this understanding that "and", as a conj. but unlike "but", can only connect two clauses, not two sentences ended with periods. But recently, I have seen so many prints, either in entertainment or in academia, where "And" is popularly used in t...

Q: Why is it incorrect to start a sentence with "and"?

tooshelI know it's wrong, but I do it all the time or else my sentences would go on forever.

I wonder which to merge into which.
Thoughts?

Q: English Subjunctive

RickayWhy is it that in the English language, the past subjunctive is the same as the past indicative for all verbs except to be? In other languages that I have learned there is no relation between these two tenses, even in languages similar to English.

^ this is a dup of something, but i can't find it right now

12:48 PM
The only suppletion question I can think of right now dealt with go vs went.
There are a couple questions dealing with the subjunctive, but I don't think they specifically address to be.

1:24 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 the longer question is the better question. Get rid of the shorter question.

What's a tactful way to tell my project lead that I will just ignore it if it is always "priority 1" ?
I hid the column, but I don't think he will be able to tell.

hi @Kit :)
You could say "There are so many priority one items that it's difficult to tell them apart. Maybe you should differentiate them by priority"

Hi @Matt!
That could work. And if I say it today at the meeting with the big boss, he might get the idea.

Hehe. Hint hint, nudge nudge

user19161
@MattЭллен Boo!

1:35 PM
hi @JasperLoy :)

user19161
@Kitḫ Boo!

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Boo!

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Boo!

user19161
I am in a boo mood today!

No boo mood in this chat.

Q: What's the origin of the stock phrase "tall, dark, and handsome"?

BillareMost everyone has probably heard the phrase "tall, dark, and handsome" being used to describe the physical qualities of a perfect male romantic match. Where did this phrase come from, and who, if anyone, made it popular?

user19161
My high school girl classmate always used this phrase.

user19161
I thought she made it up, just like I made up ctfd=check the f dictionary, and Reg made up Holy B as an exclamation.

I believe it originated because I was born, but started out as small, blond and gorgeous, and evolved as I grew up.

user19161
Reg told me to google, but googling Holy B did not tell me whether it is a standard exclamation like J C, so I really don't know.

user19161
1:41 PM
@MattЭллен That refers to a female right?

@JasperLoy I am not female

user19161
Urban D also does not list Holy B or my definition of ctfd.

user19161
So I think we can form a team and rewrite the OED together with Barrie.

well, so long as you don't mind most of being made up!

user19161
I mean the OED has so many words we never heard of, why can't we make up our own too!

1:44 PM
the word police might catch us

ears prick up
Is someone breaking grammar rules?

Nothing to see here! sweeps made up words into sack

user19161
Some people in their questions used the word legal. I edited it to legitimate!

user19161
And because Robusto left a comment on the legal, drm re-edited it showing the strikeout, everyone's nuts!

user19161
But I think better not use the Islamic names as exclamations. The Muslims will consider it too offensive said anywhere.

user19161
1:50 PM
I will eat dinner soon: noodles with chicken slices and mushrooms in gravy with much vinegar.

sounds sour!

user19161
I like sour stuff, especially when I feel nauseous from anxiety. Now I know why pregnant women like sour stuff. Try it when you feel like vomiting.

user19161
And I like salty stuff too, like my instant noodles gravy.

user19161
And I also like sweet stuff, like my chocolate.

user19161
So basically I like all stuff. QED

1:52 PM
If I feel like vomiting, I just stick my fingers down my throat ;-)

user19161
I don't know what made me try Mageia, opensuse and fedora again the past few days. Maybe it is the new releases. But I am glad to be back to Debian which I intend to use forever! Yes, I may change now and then but I will come back to it I think. Just like those who lose faith temporarily.

Vinegar neutralizes the acid.

user19161
And it is amazing that fedora does not seem to have the splix drivers in their repositories, I definitely need that for printer.

Ah yes, remember from chemistry, acid + acid = no acid

user19161
I tried to install splix from the splix site but too hard to get it to work.

user19161
1:56 PM
The problem is the different config in all the distros. There's no way to give documentation that works on all.

user19161
So you need to understand how things work at the basic level if you were to try to get anything complicated to work yourself.

user19161
And then sudo nano here and there to edit config files.

user19161
And I also learnt today that we can start with and and but.

user19161
Of course I don't trust what everyone says, but I do have faith in what Barrie says. He's like Gandalf to me.

user19161
@Shog9 Sounds serious!

user19161
2:00 PM
@Cerberus These actually give the most rep.

user19161
Now I have pinged everyone here, I may go to eat!

@MattЭллен Weak acid. Acts as a buffer.

2:58 PM
never mix acids and bases

3:14 PM
Why not?

because you can't have stability in the incomprehensible room?
hi @z7sg :)

hi!
@Kitḫ it's dangerous isn't it?
(i'm not a 'chemistry major' btw)

@z7sgѪ Meh. Depends on which and how much and in what type of container.
Usually results in a vigorous, exothermic reaction.
Far more dangerous to put magnesium in water.

Or throw a lit match into a custard powder factory

Yes. That too. makes notes

3:27 PM
@Kitḫ i know. we used to steal the magnesium ribbon from school and do dangerous things with it

We used to — uh, you know what? Never mind. I don't know a thing about chemistry.

@Kitḫ what were you going to say?
did you try and turn things into gold?
like this guy

I never should have clicked that link.

i don't understand how he caused £3000 damage
@Mahnax sorry man :(

3:41 PM
@z7sgѪ It's okay. My parents scarred me for life more than you ever could.

interesting. I'll put it on my list of possible money making schemes

4:17 PM
@JasperLoy Not as serious as your avatar.

user19161
@Mahnax Really? Because one of mine did.

should this be closed as off topic?

Q: Modern replacement for checking frequency tables?

WAFWhat is the most up-to-date, robust, and reliable way to check verb (or other POS) frequencies in current usage? Is there any hope of an algorithm involving counting Google hits and dividing by some benchmark number (say 1,000,000,000,000) or is that so error-prone as to be out of the question? ...

I ask because people are voting to close this as off topic:

Both should be closed as dupe of #0.

@JasperLoy Seconded.

I hate it when my question gets 0 votes and the answer gets many votes, or the question gets many votes and my answer gets 0 votes.

thems the breaks

user19161
@Mahnax Then I wish you well, and I hope you like my present.

@JasperLoy A present?

user19161
@Mahnax Rep.

4:23 PM
Yaaay.

toodles!

user19161
@Mahnax I noticed. I suspected. Shhh, people are watching!

This is fun.

user19161
:2490000 Hehe, now they will be wondering what were removed!

user19161
@Mahnax Yes, talking to me is fun, ain't it?

4:27 PM
@JasperLoy Sneaky.
@JasperLoy And there's even a unicorn present to make all things wonderful.

user19161
@Mahnax There are several unicorns on SE, but two always hang out in this room: Aedia and z7sg.

@JasperLoy I know. Upon occasion a one @sjohnston joins us as well.
@JasperLoy Ponies/unicorns are a MSO meme.

user19161
@Mahnax I've never been here when he starts talking.

@Mahnax I just like to lurk. I'm usually in the gaming.se chat.

user19161
@Mahnax Unicorns are also an LGBT symbol. Need not be, but could be.

4:29 PM
@JasperLoy Nor have I, but he seems to be here.
@JasperLoy He speaks!

user19161
@sjohnston Speak of the devil.

@sjohnston You're like Shog9, just more lurky.

user19161
@Mahnax I often read things here when not logged in!

@Mahnax A compliment, I guess?

@sjohnston Sure.
@JasperLoy Ah.

4:31 PM
Yeah, I'm at work, so I tend to be doing other stuff with chat going in the background

@sjohnston Glad to see you're being productive.
Then again, I'm one to talk...

user19161
@Mahnax Expect more presents in the days to come, till they are all distributed.

It's okay. I'm compiling, and all the jousting chairs are taken

@JasperLoy Thanks. I might just return the favour upon occasion.

user19161
@sjohnston The computer is compiling, you are slacking.

4:33 PM
@sjohnston Where do you work? I like jousting. Maybe I'll apply someday.

@JasperLoy Well, I was writing code until I started getting all the @replies
:)

user19161
@Mahnax Sure, love does not expect itself to be returned.

@JasperLoy I'm sorry?

Q: Restart does not shutdown first on Debian Squeeze

Jasper LoyI installed Debian Squeeze from the live DVD. Going to System->Shutdown->Restart does not shutdown the computer in the usual way where the BIOS screen is seen before login. Instead it simply restarts without going through shutdown and BIOS. Why is that so? Can we configure restart behaviour to sw...

user19161
I never knew one can restart without shutdown.

user19161
4:37 PM
I wonder if we can do this on Windows...

Windows is evil and must be destroyed.
Especially Vista.

user19161
@Mahnax I see you use Ubuntu. Consider Debian?

user19161
@Mahnax Agreed.

@JasperLoy I do? I was not aware of this ;-P

user19161
Debian stable software is old but stable. Using backports we can get the latest Firefox (Iceweasel) and Libreoffice though.

4:39 PM
I am on Ubuntu.SE but I have not yet obtained the magical Ubuntu.

user19161
@Mahnax But I see you are on Ubuntu SE.

@JasperLoy Is there anything that makes Debian better than Ubuntu?

user19161
@Mahnax Ubuntu is pretty unstable these days with the new Unity shell.

@JasperLoy See above post.

user19161
But Debian is a bit harder to install.

4:40 PM
@JasperLoy Hm. I like unstable. Makes things interesting. Unless I'm trying to be productive.

i wouldn't use the stable version of debian if i were you cos it really is old. like 3 years old
testing is good.

@z7sgѪ My school still uses Windows XP, which is 5 years old (give or take).

user19161
@z7sgѪ I only care about FF and LO, so with backports it's fine. Even better than testing?

@Mahnax i found unity annoying after a while, that's all
@JasperLoy never! ;)

user19161
@Mahnax More like 10 years.

4:41 PM
@JasperLoy Yeah, it's pretty outdated. But it's better than Vista.

user19161
By the way backports has FF10 and LO 3.4.3!!!

@z7sgѪ I see.

user19161
@Mahnax 7 is the best and 8 should be next year.

@JasperLoy Never personally tried 7, but any OS that won't let you change the background image in Starter Edition is just dumb.

user19161
And it just takes 5 min to install FF backports and 10 min to install LO backports on Deb Stable.

4:43 PM
Someone has joined us. I have never seen this person before.

user19161
@Mahnax He always pops in without talking.

@JasperLoy Ah.
Hello @EnergyNumbers!

@Mahnax Hello Mahnax. I rarely comment here - but it has been known, once or twice. Mostly I just lurk to see what's going on.

@EnergyNumbers So many lurkers.
Less than 200 rep til edit privileges.

user19161
@Mahnax Should be there soon.

user19161
4:49 PM
@Mahnax You may wanna try Mint as well. It's a big family: Debian Ubuntu Mint

@JasperLoy Hopefully. If I edit 600 things after reaching 2k, I can still get Copy Editor, right?
@JasperLoy I'll look into them, and pick one.

user19161
@Mahnax That badge is independent of rep, so yes.

@JasperLoy Yay!
@JasperLoy I have twp goals in life: Copy Editor and a Ph.D.
Wow. Two...

user19161
@Mahnax But I never did a dual boot with Windows, just wiped it out. Make sure you don't wipe it out accidentally!

user19161
@Mahnax That's why I predicted you will win the Fields Medal or maybe the Nobel Prize if you are doing physics instead.

4:52 PM
@JasperLoy I have no Windows at home. But I can install Ubuntu to a CD and then run it alongside my current OS.

user19161
@Mahnax OS X?

@JasperLoy Yup, Lion.
@JasperLoy Your predictions flatter me.

user19161
@Mahnax I'm glad you are flattered and not flattened!

@JasperLoy Har har.
You know what I hate? Eclipse.

user19161
@Mahnax The movie or the real thing?

4:54 PM
@JasperLoy Neither. The Java IDE.
@JasperLoy The movie as well, if it has anything to do with Twilight.

user19161
@Mahnax OIC, I love the movie. I am gonna watch Breaking Dawn when it is out soon.

@JasperLoy I am worried about you.

user19161
@Mahnax I am a fan of TL.

@JasperLoy See above statement.
@JasperLoy Actually, that doesn't surprise me.

user19161
@Mahnax Because of my avatars?

4:57 PM
@JasperLoy Yes.

user19161
@Mahnax If you like him you can go to taylorlautnerwow.com for his pictures.

@JasperLoy I think I may have just died.
No, I did not visit this site.

user19161
@Mahnax When I went there I said "wow".

@JasperLoy Are you okay?

user19161
@Mahnax Yes, but not in other ways which I shan't mention here.

5:00 PM
@JasperLoy Are you heterosexual...?

user19161
@Mahnax Yes.

@JasperLoy Noted.

user19161
@Mahnax And male, in case there was any doubt.

@JasperLoy I'm leaving, it's now time for second block. I knew that already.
Second class, I'm not sure if everyone calls them blocks.

user19161
@Mahnax Cya!!!

5:09 PM
Good afternoon elu chat!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Afternoon!

5:31 PM
@Kitḫ How are you these days?

mumbles out of non-numb side of mouth Hi!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh, pretty good, thanks. Yourself?

@aediaλ dental work?

@aediaλ Hi! careful smooch Dentist?

@Kitḫ not bad. Had the santa claus parade here yesterday. But my daughter decided that she really had to go pee just before the end of the parade, so she missed Santa.

5:33 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Well, that's fine really, since Santa doesn't come until after Thanksgiving (American).

scuffs hooves on the ground sadly Yeah, cavities. Even though I swear I've been good.

Poor aedia.
pats unicorn neck

Awwh thanks.

Would it cheer you up if I offered to taste the rainbow?

giggles Yes!

5:36 PM
giggles ;-)

@Kitḫ Well, he usually drops by here first so that he can go down south later, it's on the way, so to speak.

Santa goes south? Interesting. makes notes

@Kitḫ It's the only direction he can go.

scribbles furiously

5:39 PM
I wonder how Mrs. Claus feels about that?
So wanna hear about my meeting today?

Of course!

yes but I am leaving my computer, I'll catch up on the transcript

Let's see how to explain it. I have this issue with a user who wants to be able to view all of the GRP interventions in her unit. The way we have it built, these types of users can see RR, LL, and SGI, but not OI or GRP.
So the meeting was to talk about whether we should create a user role like the RR, LL, and SGI ones for GRP.
In the meeting, my project lead says "Oh, I see the problem now. There was a miscommunication. SGI should have been renamed to GRP, not OSG."
So this was based on the conversation we had in June, where he said "Rename OSG to GRP because we aren't collecting data for any of the other components of OSG."
Obviously, you can see where this would have been a failure of communication.
So I am in the midst of figuring out the extent to which this is an actual, solvable problem.
And I am really pissed off and trying not to be.

So the problem is basically because project lead made the wrong decision about which things users can see?

Well, sort of. He told me that one large component was actually something else.
So now we have two things that are the same.
But because they have different names, our users have entered some of the one thing in the other thing, thinking it was something different.
Hrm.
So OSG is "Other Small Group," a generic category.
SGI and GRP and specific types.

5:49 PM
Ah so now all those OSG and SGI and GRP things are mixed up?

Yes.
And terrifically so.
Because some users would have only had SGI, which is what it was named last year in the prototype, so they would have entered their GRP in the SGI module.

It's hard to follow without knowing what they are but I can see where project lead started the problem and then blithely ignores that it it was his fault.

Well, he did say that it was his fault, but he glossed over the "I didn't notice it at all until it was a huge problem."
I realize it is hard to follow. Sorry. I am just venting.

"And now you have to solve it right away and make us look good. You can do that, right, Kit?"
It must be frustrating.

"Well, the user would like a resolution before the holidays..."
Yeah. I'm sure she would, project lead.
Interestingly, I discovered a problem in my permissions sp that actually solved the problem.
So my boss suggested that we pretend that it is a workaround until we can implement the real solution.

5:53 PM
Keep telling him no matter what it is, whether it's a bug or some pretty coloration he wants for things, that you need his help to prioritize.

The only way that works is if I do it in front of our big boss.
And even then, every new topic is priority 1.
So it ends up being whatever we talked about last.

Play dumb. You're just a programmer. You don't set the priorities. "If the user wants a resolution before the holidays, I really need your help to tell me which of these things I should work on first."

It can't be done before the holidays.

Or "I can do that, but I need to know which of these other tasks is a lesser priority."

I'm off on Wednesday. That leaves tomorrow.
And today, of course.

5:55 PM
Oh, those holidays.
Stoopid lead.

But we need to review all the user role assignments and merge tables and ...
But my boss said to stop thinking of solutions. First, outline the problem.
Nov 17 at 1:15, by z7sg Ѫ
i'd give aedia more power. she seems nice

I'm off only Thanksgiving itself and we're not traveling or anything, with my husband having like twenty bazillion projects to finish for grad school, so I was barely thinking of bird day as holidays.
@Kitḫ :)

@aediaλ Oh yes, that's right. You don't work at an academic institution. It has its perks.
Hey, if you want to relocate, we're looking for another programmer.

The thought of getting out of the DC area is tempting...

I don't think this guy will be the project lead for those either...
