@Cerberus What? Of course my husband is on it!
Oh. You didn't mean that, did you?

@Kitḫ Wait...you are Michelle??
Nice hair.
No, wait, I've seen pictures of you, and you look slightly different.

No, Obama's not on it. Although there is a phone call contingency, so it's possible I could make that happen.

A what contingency?

A phone call contingency. The list is only for the ones I don't need to call about.
Others have to be reviewed individually.
I don't think we've talked about Obama, so he's not on the list.
But if he propositioned me, I can call and ask for an emergency review session.
Top priority.

might we know who is on the list? maybe anyone off EL&U?

2:04 AM
No.
Sorry.

@Kitḫ Ahh! Interesting.
What does one have to do to gain a position in the list?

I think only Tom Brady and Johnny Depp are currently on the list. I was disappointed that I couldn't include Wes Welker, but hey.

I can imagine.

@Cerberus Well, I have to find them attractive enough to want to engage in sexual relations with them.

user19161
There are currently no women on my list of those I had sexual relations with.

2:06 AM
Hmm.

@Cerberus ROFL. No. But he does have a nice look.

user19161
And there are no men on my list too, in case you are wondering...

Then I have to ask my husband what he thinks.

your husband has women on his list too right?

2:07 AM
@z7sgѪ Not really.

user19161
And also no non-humans on my list, in case you further wonder...

user19161
In short, I have no list...

My husband doesn't need a list, but he insists on reminding me that Halle Berry is on the top of his list every time we see her.

user19161
WTF! I mean the question.

2:08 AM
@Kitḫ And what does she say?
And why doesn't he need a list?

@Cerberus We don't actually know her personally. I mean, in movies.

user19161
Gen ref.

@Cerberus I leave it to his discretion.

user19161
@waiwai quick close it.

Ah, I see.

2:10 AM
I have a feeling cerb's list is very long.

I don't think Cerb has an SO.
So he wouldn't need a list.

user19161
@Kitḫ SO?

Correct.

@JasperLoy Significant Other

user19161
I mean the list of those he had sexual relations with, oops.

2:13 AM
Well, in that case, I bet I have him beat.

user19161
Well now I am confused exactly what this list is.

Of course, I am also 7 years older and a slutty American.

user19161
I beat all of you hands down because my lists are 0,0,0,0,...

Jasper, it is not polite to call someone a slut, even in veiled terms. I know you don't mean it like that, but better not say such things.

user19161
@Cerberus Huh, where did I say it?

I have a feeling cerb's list is very long.

i am a slut. like most men are i guess. well actually i am more like a frustrated monogamist.

@Cerberus I think he meant to imply prowess.

He probably meant to be nice. I just told him that I'm not a huge fan of such talk.

@z7sgѪ I'm confused by the cigars then. You want to be monogamist or not?

user19161
@Cerberus Er OK. I am beginning to understand you more.

2:18 AM
OK.

@Kitḫ hell no i don't but where are all the easy ladies? :(

Sometimes I wonder, if not for my problems, would I be married by now?

@z7sgѪ I love being a parent! But life sure is different.

user19161
I think I definitely don't want to have kids now.

I am not sure what I will tell my boys if they ever ask me about my special relationship with Auntie.

2:23 AM
oh it's way past bedtime. goodnight ppl!

Good night!

give my regards to auntie!

user19161
Firstly I won't have the energy to have kids, and secondly maybe my genes are flawed.

@z7sgѪ I'll give her a big kiss for you.
Damn. I should go to bed too.

So ironically it seems that it is better for so-called high-rep users to answer.

Q: What's the difference between classical and classic?

ComputistWhat's the difference between classical and classic? For example, is it more or less appropriate to say "classic content in text books" than "classical content in text books"?

user19161
This is a great question, feel free to answer it.

Q: "Key thob" and "key fob"

glowcoderI've been receiving emails at work inquiring about registering our key fobs. This is slightly disturbing to me as I've always called it a key thob. ^ i agree with Martha and the OP that this should be reopened. we have 4 reopen votes already -- only one more!
and if the Q is reopened then I intend to write a nice linguisticky answer for it

Knock yourself out, then.
Also, how did you get to the "pedantic" tag? I followed the link from meta, and got an empty list. So I figured, it had been cleaned up already.

@RegDwightѬſ道 because i cleaned it up
the list is empty, because i emptied it

You emptied it eleven minutes ago.
I checked like five hours ago.
I suppose I have some weird default set somewhere, again.

the s, they hide from you

Oh, haha, my default is "unanswered". For whatever reason.

A: "Key thob" and "key fob"

JSBᾶngsAs discussed above, this is clearly an error. However, it is an interesting error, which is driven by several different things: The word fob is very rare, and is essentially unused outside of this expression and the idiomatic verb to fob off. Therefore it's not surprising that some people mis-a...

"and tt is not" -> "and it is not", I guess.
Oh damn, you ninja'd me.

so, apparently f.o.b. is almost as popular as pedantic - books.google.com/ngrams/…
but fob probably isn't

@Matt gets the "irrelevant use of Google n-grams" badge

it was relevant to your premise that fob isn't very much used.
but you are right
I'll still take the badge

"Fob" sure sounds like a word Mr Bean invented.

1:59 PM
also "fob off" really sounds like it should mean something dirty, but it doesn't

It probably does mean something dirty to Mr Bean.

he is an unpredictable and strange man

@RegDwightѬſ道 hey! mr Bean is no perv >:(

he used to date a librarian

2:01 PM
@z7sgѪ At no point did I claim he were. Also, how would you know?

I used to have a copy of his diary. Most illuminating

Mr Bean has a different threshold of "dirty" than the rest of us

@MattЭллен Now that is something a perv would do. Making copies of people's diaries.

also, is anyone else sad that the changed the truth and beauty quarks to top and bottom? every time i read an article about quantum dynamics i cry a little

@RegDwightѬſ道 I don't know who copied it! I just bought it...

2:02 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 you implied it! he is childishly innocent imo

@MattЭллен So you are ready to pay actual monies to satisfy your perv needs. I see.
@z7sgѪ I'd have to read his diary to be sure.

it's only a penny!

what's in it then? any pervy stuff?

I don't remember exactly - I was 12 when I read it. just things abut the librarian and his teddy bear

2:06 PM
£0.01 sounds fishy. Everyone knows that everything in the UK comes with a price tag of at least £50.

it's why we're all so rich!

Or poor.

we never buy anything

That's the Scots.

oh, yeah.
then I guess we're all poor
I blame the Scots for never buying any of our stuff

blah blah bla very british blah blah blah TARTAN

I like how they capitalized british.

interesting that germans think the scots are cheapskates

I dislike how they didn't

who do we americans think are cheapskates? jews, maybe?

2:10 PM
Braveheart is a nice illustration of how everything people think about Scots is historically accurate.

based entirely on empirical evidence.

Empirical and historical have letters in common. Coincidence? I think not!

empirical evidence is evidence collected during the reign of Queen Victoria

i'm trying to figure out if judenpreis is a word. it appears to be, although it's not on leo.org

@z7sgѪ Everything is a word in German.

2:21 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 sort of the inverse of Dutch

Judenpreis is just as valid a word as Preisjude.
@MattЭллен They do overlap at Ananas.

how would you create a german dictionary?
would need a lot of paper
@RegDwightѬſ道 I don't think Preisjude is as valid as Judenpreis. certainly doesn't look like anyone has used it yet.

@z7sgѪ Easy. Just list the two and a half roots German has, and let the reader construct the rest themselves.

what are the roots? you could make a dictionary right here!

@z7sgѪ It is as valid in that it would be just as easily understood. I have never heard either, but I understand both.

A: "Free bacteria!" on mineral water bottles

Jasper LoyIn this case, there is a different meaning just because free is used in two distinct ways: at no cost and without, with the latter used in the suffix in bacteria-free. For example, you can also say a stress-free life does not come for free.

user19161
Please elaborate on what's wrong with this answer.

@RegDwightѬſ道 what does it mean? 'prize jew'? it's just a compound noun i suppose but you do need context to understand it

@z7sgѪ prize jew or price jew. Several possible meanings without context, but that is true of pretty much every word in every language ever.

user19161
I don't understand the two downvotes, so pray tell.

my vote was an up vote, so I can't help you.

Q: Why don't Americans write "devor" instead of "devour"?

Otto HarjuWhy don't Americans write devor instead of devour to be consistent with the pervasiveness of using variations such as color and armor?

HOT question!
:|

user19161
Unexpectedly.

user19161
Oh I looked at my rep record and realised that the 12 consecutive upvotes from mystery person were indeed removed automatically. That's why I could not divine it.

2:54 PM
@z7sgѪ I'm not sure rhyming is the best way to explain it.

@RegDwightѬſ道 actually, i think it's a perfectly good explanation. the words which are respelled from -our to -or all have an unstressed vowel, while the words which aren't respelled have a stressed diphthong. which boils down to exactly what the top answer said

@JSBᾶngs My point exactly. It's stress. Not rhyme.

Best way to understand it is to understand the spelling changes. Then you wouldn't need to ask the question.

@RegDwightѬſ道 stress and rhyme are inseparable. a stressed syllable cannot rhyme with an unstressed syllable.

If the "our" in devour were pronounced as the "our" in colour or armour, it still wouldn't rhyme with them.

2:59 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 okay, that is a good point

@JSBᾶngs Again, my point exactly.

but the community disagrees with you @RegDwight

It doesn't.

i have modified the top-voted answer. i'll let Peter Taylor keep the reps rather than adding another answer myself

@JSBᾶngs Good. That's all I was aiming at.

I disagree!

@Cerberus You will forget.

On it. Or them.
Hah! I can't forget what I never knew.

@Cerberus You can.

3:02 PM

@Cerberus You have forgotten more than you have forgotten.

I suppose I do forget the same thing several times, sometimes.

@z7sgѪ I haven't checked, but by the looks of it, the question got multicollidered. So it's not even the community. Just random passersby.

OK, the wider stack exchange community not EL&U community. And they're probably not stupid, just ignorant and trigger happy.
