y ?

Hmm... I thought that would pop the whole list off
I guess I'd have to try

Disclaimer: I don't use or know Stuck. The advice given came from a cursory reading of the esolangs page and a vague understanding of what you want to do.

This is annoying. This method is called in a hundred places, and half of the times it is called using named parameters like foo(arg1: "bar", arg2: "baz");
So if I want to change the name of the parameters, I have to change the name everywhere it got called

This looks like a job for Refactorman!
Or at least "ignore this for the time being and hope it doesn't become a problem later man".

We're late in the cycle for this product, so I can only refactor it in the next version
Which I guess would be fine, but then if someone makes another change to this version, merging forward becomes difficult
I'm all for punishing my coworkers for branching early. Let's do this!
3
J/k. I won't be that guy. But this is the kind of thing I write down and bring up during our Sprint Retrospective, where we identify all of the things we could have done better and then toss them out the window.

2:09 PM
Is there a word for the opposite of refactoring?

Spaghetti code.

"...and then toss them out the window." At least you have the important part figured out :P

Where you charge ahead, adapting to the current code with minimal short-term effort.

If refactoring decreases technical debt, then taking out a technical loan would increase technical debt.

@feersum JIT-coding?

2:11 PM
hmm technical borrowing then?

@feersum Well, refactor implies it was factored. So I guess defactor (or redefactor).

Forward factoring?

here's my MMOKOTH progress so far (it isn't really much) koth-phinotpi.rhcloud.com I've just been messing around with Perl's GCI (Common Gateway Interface) module and css files.

@minxomat Thanks for the suggestion but I think AutoIt might be a bit tricky to fit in, unfortunately. Double quotes aside, ConsoleWrite/ConsoleRead's also pretty expensive
Will keep in mind if something changes and I end up chucking out languages though

If that happens and you need help golfing the actual AutoIt code, just ping me and I do my magic :D

2:14 PM
Hah, I'm not even sure what I can do on the list in < 50 bytes in AutoIt tbh (apart from the really easy print ones)

So y does indeed appear to pop the whole array off.
I'm going to go sift through the source code...
Wish me luck.

Er... that looks even hard to fit in :P
Oh wait hang on... I might have this

Yeah, I noticed that I've deleted that repo anyway ^^

Hmm I think I've got it

@Rainbolt Is everything all right?

2:22 PM
Rainbolt hasn't been seen in twelve minutes. Clearly he's dead.

I'll buy flowers. He always liked the minecraft poppies.

I was saved. Right before I got my shot, a VP (who is a heavier man than I) unbuttoned his shirt and got his shot.

@feersum golf

Very good to hear. A sad Rainbolt makes a sad Sven.

2:38 PM
I will do my best to be happy knowing that you are dependent.
My boss just told me that I was the only developer that got a flu shot. They are giving them for free, at the workplace. Why would a person not take advantage of that?

Autism >_>

I've never gotten a flu shot, but that's mostly because I'm an idiot.

It was a requirement in the military, yet you'd still see people put it of and delay every time. People are weird, that's all.

Q: What is an antonym for "refactoring" with regards to programming?

RainboltConsider this definition of "refactoring" from Martin Fowler's book, Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code: Refactoring is the process of changing a software system in such a way that it does not alter the external behavior of the code yet improves its internal structure. What ...

"How would one describe the process of worsening or deteriorating a software system?" Developing.

2:42 PM
I'm not sure there's a good antonym. Refactoring is an intentional act, and I'm not sure intentionally making the code worse is common enough to have a name.

If stars equal upvotes, you already lost 26 rep by posting in here.

Oh no make it stop

I assumed 2 downvotes

That's reasonable.

I have 32 bytes to work with AutoIt - this sure ain't happening :P

2:47 PM
@Geobits I added your comment to the post

Too bad. Sabotage seemed like a good answer for the intentional aspect :P

I just came up with a really cheesy joke.

I love cheese. Lemme hear.

And you haven't told us yet? Out with it!

Why is Sx afraid of Sven? Because Sven Ight Nne.

2:50 PM
Oh wow.

Geobits hasn't posted in 2 seconds. I think your joke killed him.

Geobits hasn't posted in the last few seconds. Is he still alive?

The rate limiter is really a pain sometimes.

Man. I haven't posted in a couple seconds. Guess I'm dead.
It's difficult to get work done and keep yourself alive at the same time.

2:54 PM
Everyone can use a life-support chat-bot.... It would make this considerably less usable but we would at least have a false sense of people who are alive.

Q: Avoid the steepest descent!

JoannesBackground A few months ago the adventure of your live was just about to start. And now, in this precise moment (yeah, now), after months of suffering and hard work, you and a group of friends are standing on the top of the world. Yes, you are right, you are on the summit of Sagarmāthā. However...

If we can get another message with 3 stars, we might be able to make the starboard have only messages with 3 stars.
2
The 6-star one is the oldest so hopefully it will be pushed off.

I think this is just a plot to get a lot of stars.

> make the starboard have only messages with 3 stars.
We had that multiple times today already.

How many messages is your showing?

5

3:21 PM
I have 10.

I also have 10.
Great now your message as 4 stars.
Ah that's better.

I have 1. :)

Yay!
Took a screenshot.

up to 2 :)

People are trying to ruin it...

3:22 PM
We have traitors in our ranks.

Immortalized:

Good thing I took that screenshot quickly.

Can't undo "the". It's too late

I was gone for five minutes. Did I miss all the star manipulation?
3

Yes.

3:24 PM
Well damn.

But we have photographic evidence that it happened at least.

Why would you take a picture when a screenshot would work as well?

I did.
Ooh, maybe we can try for a 2 star scoreboard...

Huh, apparently I didn't miss all the star shenanigans after all.
3
If you try hard enough, you can get the whole set of seven, then summon the eternal dragon.
2

What if we actually said 10 equally interesting things? Organic starboards are better for you.

3:27 PM
Looks like it's going to be a Geobitsboard.

Ooh.

I dunno. I've heard some shady things about organic labeling, so it's hard to know what to trust.

We've got to push off feersum and sven's messages...

Have mercy

When Peter r̶i̶s̶e̶s̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶d̶e̶a̶d̶ returns, he's going to be really confused by the star feed.

3:31 PM
This is a stupid message so people can star it if they want and be done with the shenanigans. Placating the masses and all.

Ah, now I feel bad.
2
No wait don't do it.
It wasn't worth it!

I'm trying to test something. Can someone post a message in (at least) 5-10 seconds?

Sure.

Gah, stupid Chrome. If I pin this tab, I lose the new message notification because there's no real tab title area.

No you dont.
Chrome flashes pinned tabs when there is a change in DOM.

3:45 PM
I definitely didn't get one for Dennis' message.

Watch for a small light that goes from right to left.

Nothing. Let me check my settings.

I always pin this tab and I can confirm

No flash for Chromium on Linux.

I'm on v45 Win 7 right now. No flash or setting for it that I can see.

3:48 PM

Version 45.0.2454.101 m here

I'm on chromium in arch linux. Flashes for me.

44.0.2403.155
Someone post a message.

done
done2

Firefox just shows the light, chrome animates it.

3:49 PM
No flash.

@minxomat I understand what you're saying, but it doesn't do anything on mine.

Someone try pinging me.

@quartata

@trichoplax It fails for orthallelous.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/mirage.jpg (990x319) as the input image with orthallelous.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/closed.jpg (313x389) as the key image.

The animation on chrome is so insanely subtle.

3:49 PM
Once more please.

@trichoplax It also fails for orthallelous.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/milky_way1.jpg (3008x2000) as the input and orthallelous.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/moon_500mm_crop.jpg (1358x1358) as the key. If saved as pngs it still fails. Using these images as examples because they're online so you can access them. If they work for you then I'll be really confused as I did not edit the code in any way, just copy and paste.

Mm, well whatever. I didn't see a flash in either situation.
I might have missed it for the ping though.

@minxomat OK, I can't even see the "flash" in the screenshot.

There's a bright spot

I'll make a screencast.

3:51 PM
Very strange.

If you can't see the light in the screenshot, then that explains why you can't see the light normally. You probably need glasses.

I can see the light from the tab.

Glasses don't normally help light contrast ;)

@Dennis You need to adjust your contrast and brightness.
Or gamma.

But I didn't get a flash like that at all here on Ubuntu Chrome 44.

3:56 PM
@minxomat That might work, but I won't mess up my entire screen for that.
@Rainbolt I have 20/20 vision. Glasses won't help with this.

@Dennis If you don't see it, then your screen is messed up already.

What's the most starred message on the Nineteenth Byte? Is it this one?

@minxomat My laptop's on battery right now, so brightness is set a little low. I don't think I can change the contrast at all.

That's impossible.

OK. I can confirm that I do not get a flash from the tab, but I can see the flash in that screenshot.
So maybe there's a bug...?
Or maybe it's something you enable.

4:00 PM
There is no setting for this. If you still don't see it you can use firefox, where the pinned tab just lights up. Works for me on ubuntu.

Maybe this is dumb, but everyone who can't see the flash understands that you have to be on another tab when the message is posted to get the flash, right?

Yes.

If you're on the tab, no flash.

Yes, I get that.

It's just not there. I see it in the animation, but even looking very closely on my screen, it's just not there.

4:01 PM
If we're still interested in this after lunch I shall make a gif!

Yes.

@BetaDecay I think it's this one with 20 stars:

@Geobits I thought of that haha

You people choose the oddest things to star.
7

We all know you'd star that if you hadn't posted it yourself

4:04 PM
A quote of an earlier starred message? No, I have some standards :P
It doesn't even show up well on the starboard.

Wait! I have a plug for this!

Q: Allow me to marry text to a onebox in chat

Robert HarveyCurrently, oneboxing requires that the URL be the only thing in a chat message. If additional text is added with the url in the same chat message, oneboxing won't work. If other people are chatting, they can break in and divorce the onebox from the descriptive text: Please fix chat in some w...

So do I

Victory is mine.

Trying to decide whether to try golfing in Scala or Groovy...

@Rainbolt Oh, I thought you were going to plug something that would onebox within the sidebar :(

4:07 PM
Oneboxes in the transcript would be chaotic
Captions that describe those oneboxes would be awesome!
I was going to plug my own post but I forgot it was a dupe

True I guess.
But at least for a chat quote, it could show the quote instead of a bare link.
Still not optimal though.

4:28 PM
Woo! My classes for the rest of the week have been cancelled!
still flooding

I just had that conversation with a new tester that I dread having every single time.
Him: "I found this and it sucks."
Me: "I agree. It sucks. But the requirements are worded such that it is acceptable, so it's not technically a Bug. Make a User Story for it and stick it in the backlog."

@PhiNotPi That's a silver lining I guess. Saying "Woo! still flooding" without the class part would have been awful :P

Q: Leave my Python alone!

kirbyfan64sosSome Linux distros are going to start replacing Python 2 with 3 as the default version. However, you have a heck of a lot of scripts with hashbangs that are Python 2-only (e.g. #/usr/bin/env python). You need to change them all to read python2. The input A Python script. I received the outspoken badge and I would like to thank all of my supporters, those who believed in me, but most of all, those who gave their stars to me. Thanks.

It gives an exact regex to look for and says "add '2' to this". Sounds like a ton of creative and golfy ways to do it...

The questions makes it sound like it's the distri's fault. The real mistake was to allow two major versions of the same language to coexist for such a long time.

Hasn't Java coexisted with it's own previous versions for a long time?

Java is never a good argument for anything :P

Well, C# has also maintained forwards compatibility fairly well. They deprecate functions before they remove them entirely
And by C# I mean .NET. I use those terms interchangeably when I probably shouldn't.

4:51 PM
@minxomat This argument is more like "If even Java can do it, then..." :)

@minxomat If you argued that no language exists that begins with the letter 'J', then I would argue that "Java" begins with the letter 'J'.

I'd use J as an example.

I think they'd actually like you to believe it starts with 'S' as in Sun Java ;)

Q: King of the Hill - Firefighters

SkylerIt is a dry summer in the prairie. The four farmers in the area realize that they can corner the market on corn by burning their neighbors crops. But they need a strategy for doing so; that is where you come in. Your task is to write a bot to tell the farmers what to burn. The goal is to finish ...

I like how certain projects tell you to "install the JRE" or "download Java". Yeah, like I'm going to download an installer that is guaranteed to contain adware...
(speaking about windows of course)

4:57 PM
If you're on recent windows (or certain linux distros...), just installing the OS seems like you're guaranteed to get adware.

OK, NOW I see the flash on the pinned tab.
How strange.

5:13 PM
Does the -f option for sed count towards the byte count?
It's the only way to run a sed script...

5:39 PM
Does anyone know of a useful audio-identification program? I'm trying to identify (and count) a specific dog barking from a live microphone feed. I think I could probably put something together (with enough trial/error), but if there's free software already available, I'll save my time and effort.

Mathematica probably can do it
Or jQuery

Well sure, but I don't know the function name for it. I guess ListenToLineOneAndCountBarks might work, though.
Or maybe $($(microphone).listen(sum($(dog).barks));

Octave could do it.

If you're gonna do it yourself, take a look at BASS. AFAIK it comes with a beat-count example.

@minxomat I've got beat recognition and frequency detection java code from an old project of mine that would probably do it. I just don't feel like figuring out how to get it working together right for this task and training it all, then tweaking it, etc.
Ideally I'd have a program I could just feed a bunch of samples (pos/neg) and have it just run.

5:48 PM
Do you have physical access to the dog?
Or is it like a neighbor's dog?

Yes, it's my dog.
He's apparently been barking quite a bit while I'm at work. I've been working with him at home, but I don't know at all how well that's turning out when I'm not there.

Why don't you just strap a mic to him and listen to it sped up afterwards.
Or take a look at the compressed waveform.

Not automated enough. I mean, sure it could be effective... but it's 2015 dammit. If I can't have a hoverboard, I at least want my computer to help me out a bit :D

So you are lazy, but not *lazy-*lazy :)

OK. Attach a mic to it, then another mic somewhere in the room the dog in question normally resides. Use the cocktail party algorithm (stackoverflow.com/questions/20414667/…) to strip out the background noise, then just write something that detects when the noise levels are above a threshold.

5:52 PM
I don't know why a hoverboard is so hard to make

@minxomat Yes, that's it exactly.

All you need is some propellors stuck into the body of the board

For accuracy you might want several microphones in the room.

@quartata Hmm. That could work I guess, but ideally I don't have a mic strapped to the dog. That would mean transmitting somehow, and I don't have a mic at the moment for that. Plus, then battery life is an issue.

5:54 PM
Alright, fair enough. It would be the way to fully automate it.

Of course you'd need a heavy duty battery

You could just place a computer in the room, have it stream the audio from your house and listen to it in the background while at work. If you hear barks, then you know somethings up.

But that shouldn't affect the performance too much

Not automated, but minimal effort at least.

@BetaDecay I hope you are being sarcastic.

5:56 PM
@quartata I thought of this, but it's not nearly, umm, "cool" enough :P

Tricky, see.
Cocktail party is the coolest because it has the word cocktails and it involves multiple microphones.
We'll have to settle for something in between...
Lemme think here.

It's definitely a cool idea.

@minxomat I'm just rambling about hoverboards

Of course, having my computer talk back to my dog when he's barking is also cool.

I'm great at coming up with cool ideas that require just enough hardware skill to make them impossible for me to execute because I'm terrible with hardware.

5:57 PM
Geoborts

Is your dog trained? Like if you tell him stay will he stop barking or something?

Yea, he's pretty good with that if I'm there. Still a bit rough at 11 months, but overall pretty well behaved.
I'm fairly certain it's the numerous squirrels living above the yard that get him barking more than anything.

OK. Maybe just record yourself saying "stay," and have it trigger if the audio reaches a certain threshold and send you a little warning.
It'll have false positives, but it's not a big deal.
Since you aren't actually doing anything here.

Eat the squirrels. Problem solved.

I tried squirrel once. Not all that great to be honest.

6:00 PM
D:
But squirrels are so cute and fluffy

@quartata This might work...

Not the grey ones, no @BetaDecay

@BetaDecay They're also vastly overpopulated and a nuisance in some areas.

^

@Geobits It's a interesting solution for sure since it is also preventative.
Eventually your dog will learn that barking at squirrels is bad.

6:01 PM
@minxomat Everyone hates grey squirrels, but it's not like they go around the local trees and beat up the red squirrels for fun

Yes, that is pretty much what they do.

@quartata Maybe. He might tune it out after a while instead (there's no real possibility of graduated response), but it's something to try.

Look at that squirrel's face and tell me that they're evil

Eviiiiiiil

6:04 PM
Still cute

Oh I took a picture of a squirrel once, let's paste that in while we're at it:

What's it got in its mouth?

A nut.
I guess.

The brain of a red squirrel.
2

Looked like a brain to me :P

6:05 PM

lol

Isn't that all devices on Earth?

@Geobits Worth trying for sure. You might want to consider a few things like maybe having several different clips with different commands (make it sound less robotic) and give treats to him if he doesn't bark very much on a day.

Q: Self-validating quine

Mason WheelerQuines have been around forever. It's a fun challenge: write a program that, when executed, generates its own source code as output. But how do you know it's actually producing its own source code? Generally, you have to look at it and compare it, but with quines generally being composed of tr...

The number of times people have threatened to flag me...

Maybe Optimizer is swimming in a giant book pit, and encountered a particularly engaging book on the surface, whereas the good ones are typically many meters below.

I'm surprised that I haven't been perma banned :D

Me too :P

the surprise part was to the users watching the event live. They first showed one video and then another

6:16 PM
Woah, why did that just change to Spanish?

I edited the link to show the videos in order.

That hinge looks like its going to break after 5 minutes.

That hinge looks horrible

I wonder how robust that hinge is in reality. It looks like it would be prone to collecting a lot of dust/grime.

And also it looks way too like a chromebook pixel 2

6:18 PM
Yeah no.
Looks more like a whiter Chromebook Pixel 2

so I am assuming no one saw the second video yet..

Like I didn't see that @BetaDecay :P

I do not understand this self-validating quine question at allll....

@quartata Right? How would it ever provide output different from itself?

@Optimizer Which one are you calling the second one? The ad with the dramatic music?

6:20 PM
@minxomat See what?

@Geobits the one which begins with "second : youtube.com/..."

I am not really sure how that was not clear.. :P

Yea, I saw it. What does that have to do with it being a weird hinge?

Microsoft already has a detachable screen though
What's the difference?

6:21 PM
the surface pro?

It's not like "the screen comes off of it" is a remarkably new thing any more.

The surface things are just Microsofts akward attempt to be cool.

yeah, especially since that they are so much worse than ipads, right?

I'm not taking that bait.

6:24 PM
Meh. Beside straight media consumption, I haven't found much use for tablets in general (for personal use at least).
A slim laptop is better in almost every aspect.

^

And why on earth would you want both in the same device?

how is surface pro not a laptop?

No, I'm saying I don't care at all about the "OMG it's also a tablet!" thing. It costs more because of that, though, so I see it as doubly bad.

1499 is not more.

(compare it to a similar spec macbook pro)

$1499? That's far more than I've ever paid for a laptop.

I just got a decent laptop for £169

Why are you constantly comparing things to apple products.

@Geobits Did you ever buy a laptop?

6:28 PM
woo! got Perl to interact with a mysql server-thingy

@minxomat no other tablet comes close, so ipad comparison. And the macnook pro was just for money.
plus, just to oppose "apple products are the best" vibe :D

@flawr The one I have now cost <$400 with an i7 and 4GB RAM. So, yea, paying over triple that doesn't sound good to me.
2

^

I was only asking because in case you've never bought a laptop, your statement would still be true=)

oh, I am also all against costly devices. I personally would go for a ~1200$ GTX 980 device if I want anything in that price range.

6:31 PM
I'd quite like one of the old IBM thinkpads
They look pretty cool

the all black cheap plastic look?

I think they call it "retro" now ;)

Or hipster=)

Haha I like the black cuboidness

I feel that thinkpads are the worst looking and overpriced devices in the market
not to forget bulky and heavy
my company provides thinkpads so I have used 3-4 generations already.

6:33 PM
Oh, when were already talking about that: Does anyone know a not so pricey not so bulky laptop?

just for the troll or a srs question?

@Optimizer They're for corporate to hand out to the cubicle drones. The weight is a constant reminder of the burden that is their life.

Serious, just in case anyone can recommend something=)

How cheap?

Just for general browsing, or what?

6:34 PM
Browsing/programming/uni-stuff.

@Geobits not really, the 450p series is super thin, ofcource compromizing on certain things

I'd say up to 500-600$

For <$400 I recommend the HP 355 series. Comes with 8+GB and either an A6 or Intel equv.

@Optimizer Ah, I haven't really looked at the recent ones. I meant the old bulky ones. They're like something out of a Dilbert strip.

Right now I have a HP EliteBook taht I bought for really cheap. But is quite bulky and heavy.

6:36 PM
@Geobits true true, i own 440p only. didn't upgrade as 440p is more performant
but once you remove optical drive, you can chop of a lot of that width and weight

I can believe that. I honestly don't even know if the opti drive on my laptop works. I don't think I've ever tried using it.

I have samsung 550p, weight is optimal, not too heavy not too light, specs were super nice at the time of launch, but now its 3 yrs old .
