That's a bust.
Sat down to get backups setup on the shared PC so I can update it to win 10.
Monitor drops dead

no magic blue smoke escaping either.

Q: Trying to install rpmfusion...what am I doing wrong?

lthI'm trying to install rpmfusion, but this is what the terminal replies. What am I doing wrong? I'm in as the root user. sh-3.2# yum install --nogpgcheck http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rp...

This user has a much more serious problem than it would initial appear.
Seems like there's a serious problem with your system. Your system may not even have gotten past the initrd. In other words, the kernel seems to be unable to mount the root filesystem and is stuck in the initial RAM disk normally used to initialize the system. — DragonLord 12 mins ago

GDI. The iPhone charger doesn't come with an extra lightning cable. So I'm home with no means to charge my phone late at night. Gonna have to power it off and go to a store when they open at 9 am. Amazing that the apple wall charger doesn't actually let you charge your phone if you left your original lightning cable somewhere else. Infuriating. I left it at work thinking I had another cable in the unopened charger box. Not the case!
Major disadvantage of iPhone. Custom exclusive charger. Gonna need a million lightning to USB cables now

So this is my new work laptop...
It weighs 6 lbs :'(

Should I get a business laptop in the future after I build my desktop?

Bob
@DragonLord Depends? :P
I'd personally go for something more portable.
Your typical business-grade tends to be designed for desk use.
(There are portable business-grade, of course.)

Not necessarily a ruggedized model like the Dell ATG laptop @nhinkle mentioned.

Bob
@DragonLord Ruggedised typically is pretty portable - but I was more referring to something light.
Personally, I'd probably not go for anything >2kg these days.

Thinkpad X1 Carbon?

Bob
Important thing to keep in mind is that you're getting this for yourself.
Don't see it as getting a laptop to use at some job.

5:26 AM
It's not a company-issued laptop, I know.

Bob
Any halfway-decent job will provide the equipment for you.

Manageability isn't exactly a requirement.

Bob
So, are you going to use it at home? On the move? That kind of thing. You can pretty much ignore using it at work.
I'm actually keeping a little convertible tablet in my bag - I use it sometimes on the train.
Light enough that I never really notice it. But it's a bit annoying to use, too.

Primary personal laptop for everyday use.
2-3 years into the future, when the Dragon is retired and Alastor is online.
Should I be planning this far ahead?
Is there a distinct advantage to getting a business laptop for personal use?

Bob
Probably not.
I keep an eye on what's new, but I wouldn't seriously start considering models or even brands unless there's some chance of purchase within the next year.
The landscape just changes too quickly.
@DragonLord Better support. But it costs more and they're typically not suitable for gaming.
The line for "business-grade" is also kinda blurry now.
Traditionally they were docked beasts.
Now? There are some lightweight models that are marketed as "business-grade".

5:32 AM
My main laptop is a high-end gaming system purchased in January 2014. However, with a gaming desktop built, there might not be a good reason to use a big gaming laptop and a business system may be preferable.
I tend to expect long service lives out of laptops and may have a good reason to choose a business laptop over a consumer laptop.
My old HP laptop lasted 3-1/2 years before it was retired.

@nhinkle: On the bright side, that thing is probably bullet proof.
@DragonLord: Unless you have specific needs, that thing is likely overkill
Something lightweight often makes sense
@Bob: same thing I use my stream for ;p

The reason I have a big gaming laptop is that I don't currently have the money to put together a separate desktop/laptop setup.

Bob
back in a bit

I haven't even settled on what hardware the planned Alastor gaming desktop will use due to budgetary constraints.
I don't want to get a GTX 960 only to replace it with a GTX 980, wasting money in the process.
Nor do I want to start with an i5-6400 and replace it with an i7-6700K.
It's a tough dilemma.

6:06 AM
sigh
The brix dropped dead
Need to find the reciept for it, its probably still under warranty

@JourneymanGeek Why would a PC fail without warning?

No idea
Power supply seems fine (it has a 12V 3.5W PSU)

Sounds like a motherboard failure.

Its supposed to have a 3 year warranty so...
I'll see if I can find the reciept, I'll find the place that does service, and get it swapped

Bob
6:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek A Stream might've been a better choice for me, actually.
But I wanted to try out the tablet form factor.

6:50 AM
anyway, I've got not much else on, so I'll go look for the receipt, and go try see if I can get it replaced on monday.
So that makes one monitor and a pc in a day

Bob
7:36 AM
o.O

@Bob: My old monitor went down this morning.
Then my brix stopped booting

Bob
o.O
Sure you aren't having power surges?

That NEVER happens in singapore...
and other stuff on the same powerstips seem healthy

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Never until it does :P

8:29 AM
Power supply on the brix seems happy

@djsmiley2k Folks that I know quit their day jobs and started own home based business after arriving home late and working their butts until late midnight. Now add to that they have families too. That's incredible discipline and willpower and folks that possess those I envy. How do they still manage to work after being sucked dry out of their creative juices and energy because of their day job?
@marcusdoesstuff You can't review sentences you typed along the way on keyboard! That's what monitor is for and I am looking for mini monitor that would only show keyboard output! Arrgh!

Q: Merging two tables in Hive with data validation

HackToHellI have two tables with some similar columns. Say, Table X has id,first_name last_name. Table Y has id,email_id, first_name. However both these tables are imperfect, so I need to fill in the null values in both the tables from the data in the other table(using some key(id in the eg)) and push it...

Too bad they're so hard to find.

Bob

ya. My RSS feeds would explode if that happened, and they haven't ;p

11:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek Probably based on this press release http://ir.amd.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=74093&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=2086554
"AMD Forms Radeon Technologies Group to Enhance Focus on Graphics and Immersive Computing Under the Leadership of Raja Koduri" and http://fortune.com/2015/09/09/amd-graphics-chip-split/ "AMD has effectively split its graphics chip unit into a separate business internally called Radeon Technology Group on Wednesday, nine years after it bought its way into the graphics processor business with the purchase of ATI in 2006. The move has no impact on its financials."

I figured out that I have to use union with a condition, but have no idea how to do the swap in values of select based on the condition
This is simple ._.
I know what book i'll be picking up tomorrow ~_~

12:09 PM
@DavidPostill: Ahh, I can safely call the person in question an idiot, since he's not from around here ;p

I don't think a union will work, union ignores key feilds for matching
Join does that but it ignores same column names
I need to use them both i suppose

Pointers anyone ? ;p

Curious about TSX-NI availability? It's in Skylake but you'll need a Core i5 or i7. The feature is disabled in Core i3 and lower processors.
!!/wiki Transactional Synchronization Extensions

Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX) is an extension to the x86 instruction set architecture (ISA) that adds hardware transactional memory support, speeding up execution of multi-threaded software through lock elision. According to different benchmarks, TSX can provide around 40% faster applications execution in specific workloads, and 4–5 times more database transactions per second (TPS). TSX was documented by Intel in February 2012, and debuted in June 2013 on selected Intel microprocessors based on the Haswell microarchitecture. Haswell processors below 45xx as well as R-series and...

Should I get a business laptop in the future after I build my desktop?

@DragonLord I haven't owned a "non-business" laptop (that is, a laptop marketed directly to consumers, primarily) in a long, long time.
Well, there's that one, but that was more of a throwaway system, not a primary system in any way.
The laptops I sink significant money into are either ThinkPads or the MS Surface Pro, both of which are really targeted at businesses moreso than individuals (though they'll take your money just the same).
I don't believe in the viability of the "consumer laptop". In general, build quality is far, far too low.

I'm evaluating future replacements for my current gaming laptop (which is fully functional but starting to get unwieldy) and I'm looking into getting a ThinkPad or other business laptop.

wibble

ThinkPad GPUs aren't the greatest, so if it's for gaming, maybe look at another manufacturer

No plans to game on the laptop, since I'll have a gaming desktop at that point.
I'm spending a lot less time gaming on my laptop than I used to.
On an unlimited budget, I'd consider something like an HP ZBook mobile workstation.

8:35 PM
ah, a ThinkPad T or W series would be great for non-gaming productivity

It's more likely I'll select a ThinkPad or EliteBook, though.

I have a Ivy Bridge T-series
great coding box

Bob

There's nothing inherently wrong with laptops targeted towards consumers.
As long as you don't go for the cheapest you can find.

There's this part of me that wants to build up to LPC performance with an unlimited budget, potentially exceeding $10,000
Time to build?
(Base configuration, $5722, uses i7-6700K and a pair of GTX 980 Ti cards in SLI.)
The Aventum 3 is as good as it gets for a prebuilt system.
The same people behind the LPC.
