Is it on-topic to ask about ECC here, or does that not fall under cryptography since it's not really about security?

@Stacey Do you mean Error Correcting Codes or Elliptic Curve Cryptography?

It depends on the specifics of the question. Error correcting codes are used in the field of cryptography. If your question doesn't directly relate to cryptography, I'd suggest posting on Math.SE, which has a coding-theory tag.
You can always post here or there and if the community thinks it would be better on a different site, a moderator can migrate the question.

The question is about using a 128b HSIAO decoder to decode a 64b data width
I think it may be more relevant on Math.SE

@Stacey Sounds like a good plan. Good luck. Hope you get some good answers.

Computer Science might be another alternative, it has a coding-theory and an error-correcting-codes tag

Q: Can I somehow advertise the BIU winter school on cryptography?

Yehuda LindellI organize a winter school on cryptography at Bar-Ilan University in Israel every year (this is the 6th year running; see here). The school studies topics in depth and is meant for people with significant crypto background. It occurred to me that there are people here that may be interested (espe...

Q: Can I use a 128b HSIAO Decoder to decode a 64b word?

StaceyI have implemented a 128b HASIO decoder on an FPGA. This decoder checks a 9b ECC for each 128b of data received. In order to save on resources, I am time-sharing this decoder between multiple datapaths since I don't need to perform a decode particularly often. There is also one case where I am...

Q: Thinking ahead: Choosing random string proposals for a Crypto.SE design

SEJPMI think we're all well aware that we have formally graduated and that there will be a site-specific design in the future. As Crypto involves many random and pseudo-random strings I many designs need such strings. However a core principle of Crypto is transparancy, so arbitrarily chosen random st...
