this is a point i did not understand: "recovery" is sometimes refered to as some kind of software/boot mode but also as backup, can you explain what that is?

1) Boot into recovery mode (normally some combination of button presses) 2) Should be a backup option (normally to SD if you have one).

If you have the SDK tools installed you can plug it into USB and adb reboot recovery also.

IIRC there is an option for both.

Probably depends on what recovery mod is installed. I'm used to Clockwork recovery.

@BetaDecay Installing a mod is much more than rooting your phone. I look at the progression as rooting < replacing your bootloader < replacing your whole OS (modding).

@BetaDecay I played with Ubuntu Touch a little back when I had a Nexus 4. Was fun, but it didn't have a way to lock the screen at the time, so I didn't keep it for long.

I never used Lollipop. My OnePlus One came with CM, which I upgraded to the L-based version just to restore the old one.

@flawr I had the same problem with Haskell. I'll be the first to admit I probably didn't use it long enough to say I gave it an "honest try", though.

@Dennis Lollipop is nice. They ironed out some of the Kitkat issues, especially with launcher responsiveness.

@Dennis I do. I had no choice, really. A couple of months before the release of Nexus 6, my wife dropped my Nexus 5 (not really her fault, but still a bummer), and I had to use my Nexus 4 for a while. The lack of LTE support in Nexus 4 got old really quickly.

@Geobits I got used to it after using OmniROM for a while. I also use the Apex Launcher, which is much nicer than Google Now IMHO.
