6:00 PM
(well, on a samsung device ofc)

Hmm. I'd normally just backup from recovery when I did it.
Is the Clockwork recovery still baked into CM?

this is a point i did not understand: "recovery" is sometimes refered to as some kind of software/boot mode but also as backup, can you explain what that is?
ah is that a backup software? (how can i check that?)

1) Boot into recovery mode (normally some combination of button presses) 2) Should be a backup option (normally to SD if you have one).

ah ok, and what exactly can you backup there?

If you have the SDK tools installed you can plug it into USB and adb reboot recovery also.

6:04 PM
is it like just your personal data, or do you get a complete image of the current state of your phone?

IIRC there is an option for both.
Probably depends on what recovery mod is installed. I'm used to Clockwork recovery.

I am gonna check, (I am sorry for my incompetence, this is my first android device=)

Haha you didn't waste time rooting it then :D

No worries. Like I said, though, it's been a while since I've really done it. I haven't felt the need to root/muck about with my last couple phones.

@BetaDecay please explain?=)
@Geobits I just booted into recovery mode, and when i press 'backup' it sais "Team Win Recovery Project v2.7.1.0"

6:08 PM
git merge http://t.co/PAxRKdkUmf

@flawr Explain rooting? Or the fact that you didn't waste time?

@BetaDecay both, please=)
I think rooting refers to getting root access (the same as in linux?)

I've never worried about recovery, so I have no idea

@flawr Yeah, basically installing CyanogenMod is rooting your phone
And it seems like you've only just got the phone and you're rooting it already :)

6:10 PM
>_>

↑ I fear I've made a mistake
:P

@Geobits thanks for that link!

@Optimizer Shh Martin
$ git rebase origin/master http://t.co/pAHtrPrm84

@MartinBüttner You're most welcome!

do you have twitter accounts?

6:16 PM
I do

plural?

I think Optimizer does too.

@BetaDecay Installing a mod is much more than rooting your phone. I look at the progression as rooting < replacing your bootloader < replacing your whole OS (modding).

So you are required to root your phone in order to switch OS?

@MartinBüttner Added. Thanks!

6:18 PM
@BetaDecay Yes

I thought Ubuntu mobile looked cool, but I fear that I'll brick my phone

I just dumbly followed the instructions I found online, had no idea what I was doing.

^ What I did the first time
After that I decided to learn a bit about it ;)

I just had my last exam for this semester, I am not gonna learn anything now!

Why? Learning stuff outside of school is much more satisfying than learning it in school.

6:19 PM
@flawr The way to become an awesome coder is to live and eat and breathe coding. Fuck exams.
What Geobits said.

@BetaDecay MultiROM lets you install several ROMs at once. I've used it to try Ubuntu on my Nexus 5.

@Dennis Is it worth it?

@Dennis I wish they officially supported Nexus 6, not just Nexus 4.

I've got a Nexus 5 with stock ROM. It's nice as-is IMO.

Ubuntu? Nope.

6:20 PM
@BetaDecay I played with Ubuntu Touch a little back when I had a Nexus 4. Was fun, but it didn't have a way to lock the screen at the time, so I didn't keep it for long.

@ChrisJester-Young Even tough I like programming, I am really bad at writing good code.
A reason for that might be that I am studying math, not cs=)

So write bad code. So long as you're writing code :)

@Geobits specially with material design, stock has become much more better UI than custom ROM

@Geobits I used OmniROM on my Nexus 5. I liked it a lot better than KitKat.

L and Material are better than Kitkat IMO

6:22 PM
KitKat was just a naff escuse to partner with Nestlé

@Geobits Yeah=) I just convinced myself to start learning haskell a few days ago, but as I am still starting out I keep thinking: It is fancy as hell, but I do not see how I will ever gonna do anything productive with this language=)

@flawr But, it's not too far off from OCaml, and it's used in industry (e.g., Jane Street).

I never used Lollipop. My OnePlus One came with CM, which I upgraded to the L-based version just to restore the old one.

@flawr I had the same problem with Haskell. I'll be the first to admit I probably didn't use it long enough to say I gave it an "honest try", though.
@Dennis Lollipop is nice. They ironed out some of the Kitkat issues, especially with launcher responsiveness.

do you guys believe in the singularity?

6:24 PM
Nes

i believe in the plurality

@orlp I think that depends heavily on which singularity we're talking about.

so what is the singularity?

I like this Singularity.

@Geobits My wife has it. It looks nice, but there's no OmniSwitch for Android 5 yet. That's a must-have for me.

6:25 PM
@Geobits You mean people don't just use Google Now launcher everywhere?

The technological singularity is a hypothetical event related to the advent of artificial general intelligence (also known as "strong AI"). Such a computer, computer network, or robot would theoretically be capable of recursive self-improvement (redesigning itself), or of designing and building computers or robots better than itself. Repetitions of this cycle would likely result in a runaway effect — an intelligence explosion — where smart machines design successive generations of increasingly powerful machines, creating intelligence far exceeding human intellectual capacity and control. Because...

@ChrisJester-Young Do you have own the Nexus 6? If it wasn't so darn expensive, I would have bought that one instead of the OnePlus One.

@orlp at least not in the near future (100+yrs)

nexus 6 is not that expensive that 1+1

@Dennis Meh. The Omniswitch looks nice I guess, but it's no dealbreaker to me.

6:27 PM
@flawr that's irrelevant
not the when
but if it exists at all

@Dennis I do. I had no choice, really. A couple of months before the release of Nexus 6, my wife dropped my Nexus 5 (not really her fault, but still a bummer), and I had to use my Nexus 4 for a while. The lack of LTE support in Nexus 4 got old really quickly.

@Geobits I got used to it after using OmniROM for a while. I also use the Apex Launcher, which is much nicer than Google Now IMHO.

In hindsight, it was an awesome decision, because it enabled me to use Project Fi!!!

I wish we had LTE here.

@orlp I imagine it might it does exist, but if we are restricted to computers as we know them today, I think it is not gonna happen.

6:29 PM
I had thought about getting an iPhone 6 Plus as my replacement phone, but when Nexus 6 came out, I just couldn't resist.

Battle of the 666

@Dennis Where's "here"?
@Optimizer What's the third 6? IE6?

I wish LTE here had the coverage it has in Japan. The US sucks outside decent-sized cities.

@ChrisJester-Young Safari 6

Hahahaha.

6:30 PM
@ChrisJester-Young Paraguay. LTE is available in the capital, but I neither live nor work there.

but, I actually meant Galaxy 6

I'm just happy a new Nexus 5 is coming out. I like big phones, but the 6 is just too big for me.

you should be really liking the iPhone 6+

Well, besides it being an iPhone and all....

I prefer the iPhone 6#

6:34 PM
@Dennis :-D

@BetaDecay Puts holes in your pockets though.

and the ground beneath it

@Geobits I have Kevlar clothing...

The only iPhone I ever used had iOS 6, which was pretty terrible. The single-button design is also awful IMHO.

Safari is rather terrible compared to the stock Android browser too

6:39 PM
The single button confuses me every time I'm holding someone's phone.

Of course I dislike the stock Android browser too

Chrome?

stock android browser is Chrome. Not to mention there are many good alternatives too on Android
Firefox

It's only Chrome relatively recently. The older stock default was not as good.

4.0+ had chrome

6:40 PM
Not on mine :/

What was it before? That abomination from the AOSP?

Yes, the one labeled "Browser".

and that is couple of years bacl
so not recently..

It's simply called Internet

When I got my Nexus 5 Chrome wasn't default. That wasn't that long ago.

6:42 PM
nexus 5 came 2 years back only

Yes, that's what I'm saying.

I'm pretty sure my Nexus 5 came with Chrome.
I have a terrible memory though, so pretty sure doesn't mean a thing.

I'm using Samsung Galaxy 4 Active if that helps

Samsung phones don't come with stock Android, so everything is a little different.

Oh well that's your problem right there. It's a Samsung. They don't do anything the Android way ;)

6:47 PM
Hahaha at least it gets the latest OS
My Xperia P was stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich

Does it? I thought they were still lagging a bit.

"it depends"

@Geobits Only by say one or two months
Nothing too major

Ah, that's not so bad then. Much better than it used to be.

How did it used to be?

6:52 PM
Somewhere between six months and never :(
In the Galaxy S/S2 era, you might as well root and install a ROM if you wanted updates.

Galaxy S4 Mega's something like that
*Galaxy Mega

7:20 PM
anyone familiar with OCaml in here?

I don't suppose "I've heard the name before" counts as familiar?

If yes, Then I am!

Is :/ some kind of OCaml syntax you're asking about?
2

I wouldn't know

7:29 PM
OCaml now, OCaml now, I've never heard of i-it

7:51 PM
I know the last two letters stands for machine language

Oh, I thought it meant Optimizer Chats As Martin-Llama.
4

well this is what I've been trying to get OCaml to run for all day... in the end I gave up and used the original interpreter instead.

@MartinBüttner wut

8:08 PM
@MartinBüttner Do you need it?
Because I think you know enough languages to suffice ;)

^ Oh cool. Read the title and was expecting to see some lame marketing gimmick. And while I did see a marketing gimmick, Spheros are pretty cool at least.

Are spheros from the new film? I've never heard of them before

Q: Calculate A(N) / B(N) with C(N) digits

Stewie GriffinConsider three number sequences, A, B and C: A: A Fibonacci sequence, f(n) = f(n-1)+f(n-2), starting with f(1) = 3, f(2) = 4. So, the sequence begins like this: 3 4 7 11 18 29 47 76 ... B: The composite numbers, that is all integers that aren't primes (or 1): 4 6 8 9 10 12 14 15 16 ... C: The d...

Oh god what have I done

That picture looks higher quality than his avatar. Did you find it somewhere else?
Or maybe Martin's head is a vector image

That's the original.

@MartinBüttner what are you trying to run exactly?

8:23 PM
Mods have access to full size profile images

@Geobits Oh, is that why Martin wears that scarf?
How does he hide the ears though?

That's why the trees are there, for distraction/camo.

Got both avatars from the site. (It's not mod access only. :P)

I just tried to go to the site. It clearly said "Mod access required"

I tried making the reverse as well, with the llama head in place of Martin's, but it crashed my image editor. I think the editor was trying to tell me something.

8:25 PM
maybe for testing purposes, you can give your diamond to me?

Okay, here you go: ♦

@orlp is reduce the shortest way to split by a function?

@feersum the 0.1.0 interpreter of Homespring

8:51 PM
@MartinBüttner Have you tried the Perl or Guile interpreter?

@AlexA. I'm tempted to set OptiMartin as my profile picture :D

@Dennis "in the end I gave up and used the original interpreter instead."

@BetaDecay It's against the rules to impersonate another user but I don't know where the rules stand on impersonating a human-llama hybrid abomination (that's probably killer at CJam).

That is, the guile one. The Perl one says it's incomplete and buggy

@AlexA. Hahaha I'll leave you to work that one out

Q: Lookup without conditional statements

carouselambraThis challenge was inspired by programming an Arduino microcontroller. I have 6 LEDs and 6 buttons connected to various pins on the board. In the code, each button and LED is assigned an ID number (1-6). Pin numbers (ranging from 0-13) corresponding to the ID numbers are looked up using a switch ...

My Optimartin came out kind of weird i.imgur.com/ffvkNHN.png

@Rainbolt Where'd you get that picture of Martin?

Good lord D:

@Maltysen split by function?
what do you mean

Lives in London. Same Name. Tutor for Theoretical Computer Science
Smells like Martin

You're too easy to find Martin :D

That's the proverbial nail

@BetaDecay maybe we shouldn't doxx eachother?

@BetaDecay Careful about dropping links to people's real lives. They might not want them around.
2

@ArtOfCode Oh alright I'll keep that in mind
@orlp doxx?

9:15 PM
If his profile name weren't his real name, and his location not prominently displayed on his profile, and his real picture used as his avatar, then I'd be more concerned for his privacy.

That LinkedIn site is the first Google hit for his user name. I'm sure he wouldn't use his real name as user name if he tried to remain anonymous...

Do we have a question about drawing the resulting grid of lattice multiplication? Don't see any but just want to be sure.

@Dennis Depends on how common his real name is. I'm relatively anonymous. There are over a dozen people with the same name who merit Wikipedia articles.
@Calvin'sHobbies Doesn't ring a bell.

@PeterTaylor Not very common. For the same reason, I don't reveal my last name.

9:19 PM
Clearly because your last name is actually TheMenace.

which one is nicer as an escape character? '~' or '_' ?

alright, I was leaning towards ~ too

I'm probably easy to find. After all, how many Rainbolts are there in Texas?

(In case anyone is unfamiliar, I was referring to Dennis the Menace.)

9:21 PM
Well whenever dark clouds appear the sky...

@AlexA. I starred you. I got your hidden reference back bro.

Haha
Thanks bro

Haha et mois
:D

@AlexA. Does anybody not know Dennis The Menace?
That's actually who my dad named me after.

@Dennis slowly raises hand

9:23 PM
@Dennis No way!

I don't know who he is, but I know the name.

@Doorknob See earlier link

Dennis the who?

He's heard by Horton

@Optimizer That's sockpuppeting. Sorry, but I'm going to have to merge your accounts. :P

9:24 PM
@AlexA. Not kidding. My dad was weird that way.

But Dennis the Menace is such a brat!

@Dennis Your dad isn't weird... He's legendary :D

One of his favorite comics. My dad died broke and alone. My inheritance were a few debts and tons of comics. I didn't weigh them, but I think it was literally tons.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad.
The comics must be a nice token of remembrance.

They are. By volume, mostly Donald Duck and Clever & Smart. The ones I like, anyway.

9:31 PM
:)
I have a book of Peanuts comics that was my mom's when she was young. (My mom is still around though)
Do you have siblings named Donald and Clever as well?

Nope. A Robin though, because of Robin Hood.

BTW who is ArtOfCode? I guessed that he/she responds to flags

Wait... that means I got flagged again? Because I didn't see a flag
What did I post that was flagworthy this time?

@BetaDecay Posts on PPCG occasionally (rarely I think).
@Rainbolt If you didn't see it, it was a mod flag, not an offensive flag.

Oh, I see

9:44 PM
ArtOfCode is a mod on another site (Open Source, IIRC)

I didn't notice the second flag option in the little dropdown. I see it now

@AlexA. He has a diamond on PPCG chat strangely

@BetaDecay I think mods show up as mods in chat as mods regardless of what room they're in.

Ohh that's handy
I think

There is no PPCG chat. chat.stackexchange.com is a single thing. I had to switch my main profile from SO to PPCG to get my powers.

9:49 PM
You can switch your main profile?

The one associated with the chat account
Yours is PPCG, Beta.

I have 660 projects loaded in Visual Studio :(

Oh wow, Congrats @AlexA. ! Didn't realize we were getting two moderators :)

@Rainbolt No
@Shebang Thanks! Yes, @Dennis and I both became mods. :)
@Rainbolt I take it back. You should open 6 more. That would be so metal.

Nooooooooo..

9:53 PM
?

@Dennis You changed your avatar!

I was planning to do that for quite some time. Didn't want to change it in the middle of the elections though.

Makes sense

I'm impatient, so quite some time was probably two weeks ago.

You've left the FAP!

@Dennis Do you not like Highlander?

and let people vote

Whether he has to remain a fractal or he's permitted to be his cartoonish namesake?

yeah

Brutal

well, the new avatar is brutal, I'm still recovering from shock

9:59 PM
:P

@AlexA. Nothing against the Highlander, but the phrase is starting to get annoying. :P
@aditsu And delete the option I dislike. Interesting.

@Dennis sigh
@Dennis :D

Who is your avatar?

Me?
I'm Dennis the Menace.

Dennis the Menace is a daily syndicated newspaper comic strip originally created, written, and illustrated by Hank Ketcham. It debuted on March 12, 1951, in 16 newspapers and was originally distributed by Post-Hall Syndicate. It is now written and drawn by Ketcham's former assistants, Marcus Hamilton and Ron Ferdinand, and distributed to at least 1,000 newspapers in 48 countries and in 19 languages by King Features Syndicate. The comic strip usually runs for a single panel on weekdays and a full strip on Sundays. The comic strip became so successful that it was adapted to other popular medi...

feel free to try it and give feedback

10:07 PM
@Dennis That's Dennis the Menace?!

Holy cow my chat was scrolled way up.

That's Dennis the Menace

Uh, no

Uh yeah

@aditsu I wonder if I should write about it on meta :p

10:13 PM
Well, if nothing else, that was pretty meta.

@aditsu so meta
@AlexA. so metal

Right? \m/
Do you listen to metal, @aditsu?

to meta? not really

Who said anything about meta? >.>

@AlexA. you did

10:22 PM
Oh right. Do you listen to metal (not meta) at all?

sometimes.. but not that kind

What kind?

@BetaDecay Who's that impostor? The Denis from the comic books is blond.

stuff like Metallica, Korn, Linkin Park

OK, Unreadable is pretty fun to golf in.
In a masochistic way.

10:25 PM
> Dennis the Menace and Gnasher (previously titled Dennis and Gnasher, and originally titled Dennis the Menace) is a long-running comic strip in the British children's comic The Beano, published by D. C. Thomson & Co., of Dundee, Scotland. The comic stars a boy named Dennis the Menace and his Abyssinian wire-haired tripe hound Gnasher.
Strangely both comics started separately in the same year

@aditsu Ah, okay. That's the kind I don't listen to. :P (Though I used to love Metallica but I haven't actively listened to them in about 10 years.)
@Dennis There are a surprising number of languages in which golfing can be considered masochistic.

also Alice in Chains, Soundgarden (if they count)

Like Java?

and various others

@Dennis Less masochistic and more pointless. :P
@aditsu I don't consider them metal (though some folks do). Good stuff but again haven't listened to them in ages.

10:28 PM
I'm currently at 645 bytes for Hello World. Not that much longer than the Java solution. :P

Both from Seattle though! :D

I used to listen to Carcass when I was younger :p but I don't find it appealing anymore

Vi.
For which pair of languages it is not proved or disproven that you can build a polyglot?

@BetaDecay What baffles me is that the US Dennis is well-known in Germany, yet the British Dennis is not.

@Dennis Because the British Dennis is incorrect. :P
Just like British English
@aditsu I listened to stuff like that as well. And Immortal, the band linked earlier. I don't listen to much metal nowadays though.

10:31 PM
@AlexA. But... but...
British English was first and.... sobs loudly

B)
American English took British English and improved it. Then Southerners took American English and ruined it. :P

Do y'all agree with that?

Agree with what?

still crying

10:36 PM
That Southerners ruined AE.

I agree with it.

629 bytes. I still might beat Java. :P

:D

I'd say they ruined humanity; language is a minor aspect

^

10:44 PM
/me is a Southerner ;(

Not in spirit though, right?

I only live here :P

well, there are good people there too, but not enough
