4:55 AM
good morning guys

5:27 AM
Good Morning!

6:01 AM
Good morning

@Freddy how do you do?

wow interesting conversation is going on! :)
@jude I am great. What about you?

fine. I'm writing an email to be sent to my boss. I need it to be reviewed by someone; could you please help me with that?

Sure

@Freddy I never saw how your formal english writing skills. But I know that you are much more better than me as you are native englishman
I have finished typing the email. Before you read it; you need to know few tech terms which I have used in that email.

6:11 AM
@jude I am not native Englishman. I am high school student from India. So I want to just warn you, whatever I say take it as opinion. @dam @snail @cat are the the people who can help you the best.

@Freddy EzYield Fix now item = task (we'll say, task 'A')
LIVE code base = code which is running in our Web Server (Java Code)
my Fix Now Item = Ezyield Fix Now item (which we named as 'A')
some other Fix Now items = some other work (we'll say task 'B','C')
(BONO-7473) = task Identifying number.
Hi Kolin,

This is just to give a small brief on what I have been working on EzYield Fix now item. This has assigned to me on 07-Aug-2015 and before diving into start the development I had to setup the LIVE code base into my machine. This was not a easy task as the proper code was not in an one place. I had to merge lot of files by going through with decompiled jar file and remote machine code.(This had took me almost 2 days)

I have completed the development as per the structure which you have designed and discussed with me.(on 13-Aug-2015). But because of LIVE code conflicts I was struck
@Freddy @DamkerngT. @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M ^^^

One line which does not sound good to me is " This was not a easy task as the proper code was not in an one place"
You can write "This was not a easy task as the proper code was not available at any one particular place"

6:31 AM
@Freddy this is nicer

@JudeNiroshan Have you sent this to Kolin?

"I have completed the development as per the structure which you have designed and discussed with me" can be written as "I have completed the development as per the structure that we had discussed before. "
Ah here he comes. I think @dam can help you better

Hello, guys!

@DamkerngT. Not yet. I'm still doing re-arrangements for this with your(plural) help :D
Hi @DamkerngT. Good Morning!

Good morning!

6:36 AM
@dam Good afternoon

@Freddy I really need some nice; better way than this > This is just to give a small brief on what I have been working on EzYield Fix now item.

There are too many points to address, actually. But on the bright side, I think your letter can communicate what you want.
BTW, how close are Kolin and you?

@DamkerngT. not much. Only in official manner

Hmm... then "Hi" is probably not a good idea.
That's one point. The next point, instead of grammar, I'd like to give you a small tip on writing a progress email to your boss.
The tip is: make your email short, and get to the point as soon as possible.

yeah. much obliged with that
@DamkerngT. which is what I'm in lack of

6:40 AM
You boss should know everything you want to say by reading just the first sentence or two.
Everything after that is additional information.

So, that's why I started with like this > This is just to give a small brief on what I have been working on EzYield Fix now item.

Is that the only point?

You boss knows that you're working on EzYield, right?

@DamkerngT. yes. he knows. But rest of the people don't know. Therefore while i'm sending this email to my boss and i'm going to share with others
he might have forgotten too. Not sure

6:44 AM
I'm not sure, but it seems to me that you want to tell your boss that you have to put EzYield on hold because something else came up.
And you have to finish those items first before you can continue working on EzYield.
Also, you're complaining that working on EzYield is not easy because you had to pull code from several repositories.
Sorry that I may be a little too direct. But this is how a boss would read your email.

@DamkerngT. don't say sorry. It's totally fine. So, those are the exact points which I want to inform
Impressed with your summarizing skill !

I'm a boss too, remember? :-)

@DamkerngT. huh? seriously ?

Yes.

cool. Alright, Sir!

6:50 AM
@Dam what happened yesterday between you and @Stoney?

so, how would you say all these three facts with minimum sentences and proper formal english ? .... (asking for help from you; not testing your skills)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Oh, we were talking about you. We think you would make a good mod. :D

Then why did @Loong delete those messages?

@JudeNiroshan I know. Let me write in my own style, if I were in your position. Give me a moment.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That's a secret
@dam Don't tell him

6:52 AM
ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M We asked Loong to delete the messages.
(Actually, I'm fine with the messages.)

Double ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
And why would I make a good mod?

> Dear Kolin,

I'd like to let your know about the progress of EzYield assigned to me on 7-Aug-2015. Due to some new urgent Fix Now items (BONO-7473, among others), I'll need to finish them first and then continue EzYield as soon as possible (expecting tomorrow).
That would be my first two sentences.

@DamkerngT. ela (friendly way we say great in Sinhala) :D

6:57 AM
Thanks! That one escaped me.
@JudeNiroshan Hehe!

Hehe the word "urgent" amuses me now.

Jude said it was urgent. I think it still is.

I know. I mean a lot of homework dumps on SE say "URGNT HALP NEED TILL TOMORROW EXAM".

*help

Nope.
It's "halp".
Help means assist someone. "Halp" means doing their homework for them.

7:00 AM
After that first paragraph, I may let the boss know how diligent (ahem!) I was. I had to pull several things off (as in your code bases). But don't worry boss. I'm on it. ;-)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Dictionary says it is internet slang for help

I'm joking @Fred.
=____________=

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Really, I think you should run for it.

For it?

nods

7:05 AM
Aww... come on. You know what it is. :D

I think there are more worthy people than me.

I don't see the title as a reward. I see it as responsibility.

I think you are one of that worthy people

@DamkerngT. are you sure does this sounds formal way to address this ?
0.O

@JudeNiroshan You're worrying too much.

7:07 AM
@JudeNiroshan That was what I talked to you, not for you to include in your email! :D
You should phrase it in your own words. I just gave you some hints how you may phrase it.
Keep in mind what your boss wants.
If your boss is happy, you'll be happy, too. ;-)

Hmm, my candidate score would be 12. Worried

I didn't check the score of my own, but I don't think it's very high, because I usually do things behind the scene.
I don't even use the review queues, mostly.

@DamkerngT. Things behind the scenes matter.
@Dam your candidate score is 26.

I know, but the way the system is implemented, they are not counted, I think.
In any case, to me, I don't worry much about your candidate score.

I don't either.
> @Damien candidate score and badges were intended for sites like SO. Other than a human factor, no one can really know who's capable of moderating ELL in the future. For instance, no one has the constituent badge on ELL.
But where's Colleen and @Cat and @Nathan for the election?!

7:14 AM
That worries me a little. I hope they will show up on that page soon.
I'm not sure but I think there is more time to discuss that in public later.

I'm entitled to my opinions, I'm not asking anyone to agree with me.

All candidates have to answer some questions, I think.

But I believe to be a good mod on ELL, you need to know how SE works.
You need to be in the moderation gang of ELL.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That's one of your strong suits!

A zillion answers don't matter if you're not editing.
Oh, @Dam we have a subtle problem that we haven't discussed before.

7:22 AM
What is it?

Or maybe we have, but in other forms.

@DamkerngT. How should this apply to my content ?

@JudeNiroshan Okay, I'll guide you a little. The point was, don't tell your boss you found anything "not easy".

And take into account that ELL is twice the size of chem in almost every aspect of quantity.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M ELL is a bit different. You know my idea about editing questions on ELL.

7:24 AM
Yes, I agree chem questions need more editing; but how much could that be?

Even with that kind of idea, I still edit questions sometimes. To add sources, fix formatting, fix typos, etc.

@DamkerngT. I found a nice idiom which i could use in my email body. I'm burning the candle at both ends

You do. Not many ELLers.
@JudeNiroshan Markdown doesn't work in multiline messages.
ELL doesn't have many editors.

what are multiline messages ?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I've seen some others (some candidates too) fixed formatting sometimes.

7:26 AM
That's its problem.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yes. We could bring that up on the meta site.

@JudeNiroshan When you press shift+enter, you're writing a multiline message.

I mean, make our direction clear what we want the site to look like.

@DamkerngT. Remind me later . . . Meta is hot now, we won't get as much traction.
BTW after Martin got elected things on chem are way easier since he's a mod that visits chat.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yes. Maybe after the election.

7:28 AM
I hope whoever gets elected meets chatrooms more often.

Me too!

Lemme ask something on the election questionnaire.

@JudeNiroshan It's a nice phrase, but I'd recommend trying to avoid it.
Basically, you should avoid repeatedly telling your boss directly how difficult your job is.

Teehee @Dam:

A: 2015 Moderator Election Q&A - Question Collection

inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.MWhat's your viewpoint on chatrooms? Do you wish to participate in them, either for community-meta decisions or English language learning?

Haha!
It's true. More participation in the chat room would be nice.
There are several more points we could add to that list. I may add some later.
For example, a problem that was raised every once in a while in the past was that ELL sometimes looked like a Q&ATA&C instead of a Q&A platform. New ELL users who are native speakers sometimes spotted this very quickly soon after they spent a week or two on ELL.
(Q&ATA&C = Question, Attempt to Answer, Correction)

7:46 AM
BTW only the 5 top questions sorting by votes are gonna be asked from nominees.

nods

@DamkerngT. "What does this mean? "BLAH BLAH BLAH" I think it means blih blooh blah. AMIRITE?" questions?

Not that.
It was like USER1 posted a question. USER2, who is another non-native speaker, posted an answer.
Other users, who are native speakers pointed out that USER2's answer is not correct.

Some USER2 may fight back, insisting that their answer is correct.
Some USER2 may thank for the tip, and keep posting answers, sometimes correct sometimes not, every possible occasion.

7:50 AM
I've been USER2 a lot.

Sometimes USER3 (usually a native speaker) will point out that USER2 shouldn't do this if USER2 doesn't really know the answer.
USER2 may fight back: I don't see any problem with this. This is what SE is for.

And where's all the popcorn?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M It happened every once in a while, but not that kind of drama!
But I remember that one user saw that, and thought it might be fun to turn ELL into an A&Q site sometimes (i.e. a native speaker asks a question first, and let the learners pitch their answers).

SE is where we hate fun.

:D
Oh, here is that question:
10
Q: That which doesn't kill you

JolenealaskaThis is a "Hot Network Question" from another site that I thought would make a great question here. The Joker: "I believe whatever doesn't kill you, simply makes you stranger." (Clip from The Dark Knight for context) I think it's a great line, but what does it mean? And how is it twisted?

7:53 AM
That's really nice on paper, not so nice practically.

J.R. joined the experiment too. You can try searching for "Let's make like a bakery truck and haul buns." :D

Well, there are some problems with these suggestions turning SE to what it's not.

nods

First, the simple fact that something is a question doesn't mean it should or could be asked on SE.

Aww... I kinda miss Jolenealaska.
I remember that she mentioned that she was writing a book.
I told her that I'll buy it (if it's less than $10. :-)
Gotta take a break. See you later.
BTW, give it a real thought about what I said. Hope to see you on that page soon. :-)

7:59 AM
Later!
@DamkerngT. The hardest part is answering those questions.
OK, I'll nominate, but I don't have much hope for this.

8:36 AM
@Dam I nominated.

8:48 AM
@Arau do you want to nominate too?

let me see Dam is in the list or not

@DamkerngT. BTW I think she's active on cooking.SE's chatroom.
@JudeNiroshan He and @snail don't want to nominate for some weird reason.

It's their preference. We shouldn't force them

I know.
Actually if modding ELL would stop them from coming to chat, I wouldn't want them to nominate.

9:06 AM
seriously? Can't mods comes to chat?

They can.
But then they'll have less time to chat.

yeah. That's true

9:47 AM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yay!

@DamkerngT. I don't have much hope in it though. You shouldn't too.
I have the least candidate score.

I haven't checked it thoroughly, but is there any rule or guideline about conflicts of interest between being a mod on SE and running a community elsewhere.

Tell me more about conflicts of interest.

Let's say if someone running their own community besides SE.

No.
Not that I'm aware of.

9:51 AM
Wouldn't you think that he or she might try to pull our users away from our stack to his or her own community at times?

Why would they?
Lemme check with the guys in the Tavern.

Let's say if I run a Google Plus group about chemistry (as a mod), should I run for a mod on Chem.SE?

There are no policies prohibiting this.
I think they think that if you're on chem.SE at the first place, you find something useful about this community.
I think they actually like community building experience.
SE's model is unique, so unless they're attracting people to a scraper, not a problem.
Besides, @Dam:

So, it's okay if I joined Chem.SE, then built my own community elsewhere, and run for a mod on Chem.SE while promoting my own community on Chem.SE at the same time.

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 1 min ago, by PeterJ
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I can't see why there would be. If they tried to pull users away it would be visible to all in comments and moderator access to private e-mail addresses is monitored, so they couldn't really do anything a regular user couldn't do.
Of course, policies don't need to ban something the common sense bans @Dam.
If you jump off a cliff, it's not illegal, but will it do anyone any good?
Is it something you should do?

10:02 AM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Not sure about the metaphor.

Needs investigation. Why did you remove this message?

I just want you to have it. Maybe I should've flagged it, but I overlooked it at that time.

It's much more clear now.
It might call for a meta post?
Dunno.

BTW, it wasn't the only time, but I don't know how to track them.

@DamkerngT. Google gives one result.

10:06 AM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I didn't mean the exact message. I meant similar actions.
But if SE is okay with this, then I won't complain anything.

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 34 secs ago, by S.L. Barth
But I think it would be best to ask this from the mod candidate in the questionnaire or chatroom.
@DamkerngT. Actually, what matters is if you have any problem with this.

Makes sense.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Me? Not personally. But I think it could be a problem for ELL the community itself.

SE bans stuff because its users don't like them.

Eh? That's a weird reason. Perhaps it's clearer when I know what the real case looks like.

Q: Is this user advertising his product acceptable?

seheI noticed quite a number of posts where someone would advertise an alternative serialization library, since I more or less follow the boost-serialization tag. Just now, I got another one: Packing struct in Boost Asio buffer, and decided to have a look. To my surpise, this user http://stackoverf...

Is an example.

10:10 AM
A-ha!

@J.R. I nominated so we'd have six candidates; but I think I'm not quite that strong. ;)
@Dam I shot my comment there. It seems though that some comments are removed, which really baffles me.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Nothing was removed, I think. But I remember that he edited the last message, so after I clicked Send on the reply to his last message I could see that he edited the last message to add the invitation.

BalusCThere are a couple of problems here. Your bean (or "POJO" as you want to call it) doesn't adhere the Javabeans specification as to boolean properties. If you go to his profile and check the questions he asked, most of those are just to focus on teaching something to the world. Because he has already got the answer. But he is still asking that question and himself answer to that question
