I'd like to report a bug with the website:
It doesn't display correctly in IE5 :(

== English == === Initialism === IMNSHO (Internet) Initialism of In my not-so-humble opinion. ==== Synonyms ==== IMNAAHO ==== Antonyms ==== IMHO === Anagrams === Shimon...
This is ridiculous.
@NathanOsman Ha. Reminds me of trying to use 98SE. And @JourneymanGeek had OS/2 running :P
I had a hell of a time trying to 'upgrade' to IE6, and ended up installing FF 2.

@NathanOsman It doesn't even display correctly in IE8. Commenting will throw the browser into compatibility mode.

I'm not surprised.
Interestingly, Google still works perfectly:

The Google homepage is very simple.

Search results work fine too.
Virtually every other modern site in existence fails though.

2:07 AM
I lied, the source code is basically a critical hit wall of text.
I imagine Google have a team of people that make sure their product works on as many browsers.

@NathanOsman https google won't work, though

Can't have everything :P

Honestly, if there actually was a person trapped in the Sobe factory, do you think the company would admit to it?
Seems like they could have just gotten away with slavery...

2:30 AM
It dosen't work on netscape either.
@Bob I'm tempted to see if I can find OS/2 installer disks and get a fresh install up on KVM
Also SE has a limited number of supported OSes

No, no you are not. :|

@allquixotic: There's a line between temptation and doing it ;p

@Bob For 5 GB, reclen 4, from left to right: 156417, 147648, 368410, 373977, 260505, 74519, 351146, 159293, 289305, 144996, 145918, 406038, 365791.
flash cache is only 1 GB but it may be giving it a boost, even still that's only a 20% hit rate assuming it's an ideal cache, and I have plenty of stuff running on the system at the same time
For 128, it starts out with 48631...

(between the roomie recovering from tick fever, my dad apparently getting grumpy at the vet we got at the last visit, and wanting to change vets again, and my brother moving, I don't have time for stuff like that at the moment ;p

The last number "freread" for 4M is 2289. Yeah, a lot faster
Trying 15GB to see if the cache is really helping that much
15GB 4M = 211, 202, 2144, 2226, the first four... way slower on the writes now, but still faster on reads (more RAM = more ARC, probably)
starting at "random read" (15GB reclen 4M): 2221, 202, 1868, 2583, 2422
So even for something that's way too big to fit into flash cache, the reads are coming out much faster in general, but the writes are about 20% the speed of the SSD for this large of a transfer
Seems like small bursty writes are probably going to be faster on my system as long as they don't write too much data, because of the flash cache on the RAID controller and hardware RAID offload
And reads, regardless of the situation, seem unconditionally faster
just more RAM I guess? or excellent throughput of the hardware RAID5 controller
frewrite was only 4x slower... but still in the same ballpark of slow compared to the SSDs in software

2:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think I might even have Netscape around here somewhere...

oh, NCSA mosaic runs on ubuntu ;p
One of the oldest proper web browsers.

3:06 AM
I bet there's a ridiculously old web browser for X-Windows that runs on Solaris
Solaris has userspace binary compatibility back to 1985 or something crazy
you can fire up Solaris 11, start X, and ./run anything and it'll just work

@allquixotic: I doubt there's anything older than mosaic.

but maybe a very old build of Mosaic for Solaris
back when it was poised to take over the world

Bob
@allquixotic Hm. If you're only testing with 10-15 GB, yea, probably hit the caches.
I was using 100 GB.
You might have to go 150 to avoid all caching.
@allquixotic Interesting that my reads are so much slower than the writes, though o.O
(for random)
Looks like the cache makes up for the HDD speed.
Maybe I should've gone with 3x 2TB :P

My boss has odd taste in music.

3:22 AM
Didn't work so well in Netscape Navigator 3:
Netscape Navigator 4.7 works a bit better:

@NathanOsman Woah, ancient interface :)

I know. It was kinda ugly.

@NathanOsman: exactly as it does on OS/2 ;p

I feel so old when I see the cascading error messages from Navigator 3.

@JourneymanGeek Does he wear a suit and listen to japanese goth punk intended for children?

3:29 AM
no and no.

That brings back memories of doing webpages when I was 12.

Least I don't think this is what it is.

spam alert!

^--- NCSA Mosaic 1.0

@MichaelFrank: devnulled it for you.

3:34 AM
+1

@NathanOsman such perfect rendering.

@JourneymanGeek Dat girl, she lookin finr, dawg.

Does anyone here think this is spam?

Not really enough evidence either way

Answers seem targetted to the question.
I'd keep an eye on it?

That's why I haven't flagged it.
I'd agree with you on monitoring the account for further activity.
Can we do something about this?
It's been getting worse.

Alas, the best option is to keep flagging. Maybe post a MSE post about this. Also, oneboxed spam makes me sad.
(and I need to switch to desktop mode to baleet it, which is a pain)
thank you.

I can't easily circumvent the oneboxing here.

Also, I tend to nuke clear spam flags as soon as I can.
spam: link to question usually gets my attention if I'm on chat

4:26 AM
I can understand why we don't want to do this (it reposts the beginning of the bad content) but it's not easy to avoid without formatting the entire link in Markdown.
I've had trouble with this in the past.

Problem here is we don't want the content to survive. And if I'm on at work, its using mobile chat.
(Thank $deity for dual screens)

@MichaelFrank This (10k only) is the most recent. I'm afraid we might be seeing Bayesian poisoning attempts on the global Stack Exchange spam filter.

@DragonLord: The spam filter system is opaque to mods. However mods are both a way to feed the spam filter more spam, and handle the stuff the automated spam deletion systems miss.

@DragonLord chances are very good that whomever it is they searched for specific RDP questions to put an answer in, on very very old questions. Would a regular user do that? Assume that a regular user had seacehd for . . . something they already knew what to use?
So yes it does look 96% like spam, I like to give the benefite of the doubt :-)

Oh, you were talking about the other user.

4:32 AM
Biggest problem for me ordering stuff online. I'm so damned impatient. ;p
(says the guy who waits for 3 months to buy stuff. Then complains about 3 weeks delivery time ;p)

I want it NOW! (after wating 100 years to have the money for it)

pretty much ;p
Granted, my current display is pretty terribad ;p

Someone upvoted this superuser.com/a/343551/98855 POS answer i put in when i was a newbie. While it does indicate where something is located, it doesnt tell how to actually do anything.

The comments give it a bit more context tho

Now I know i cant upvote my own answer, but there are times i want to downvote them :-)
And it also has the added "be a jerk" I will help you to google this kind of link at the bottom? what a fool.

Q: Spambots promoting personal enhancement products, can we track them down?

DragonLordI'm seeing a disturbing increase in spam posts promoting personal enhancement products such as male enhancement, hair care, dieting, and other similar products. The following list (all links 10k only) were some of the more recent I have identified: http://superuser.com/a/935755 http://superuser...

@DragonLord I assume you get to see the IP ?

They don't trace to any common IP addresses. They're on shared hosts (or so they seem)
Spam NOW!

Do you get to see the IP that the person or bot used when placing the post ?

@JourneymanGeek link
@Psycogeek No, only mods can see that

oh

4:53 AM
With spam, there's little point. If they have a common IP address, they get blocked. If they don't, flagging gets them blocked.

This is happening at a disturbing frequency. I think we need a Community Manager here.

I thought you were community spam manager? :-)

Q: Who are the Community Managers, and what do they do?

jcolebrandWho are the Community Managers? What do they do? What is their relationship to the "Community" user? Return to FAQ index

My video card (amd) decided to step down to 500mhz on the gpu and just stay there :-( even though the load is 100% , first time that has happened.
I need to wack it upside the head, changing the profile back and forth . . . ahh dont make me boot you bastard.

Bob
@DragonLord I honestly think you're overreacting a tad. It's not the end of the world. It's spam. On the internet. It'll go up and down as some company or other (often some shady contracted marketing agency) pops up or dies. This isn't particularly abnormal.

5:05 AM
@Bob I find it more likely to be a cybercriminal botnet.

Bob
@DragonLord And? So? Therefore?

superuser.com/q/935763 and superuser.com/a/935755: Less than 10 posts and one hour away from each other.

Bob
It isn't your job to "track them down". It isn't SE's job to "track them down".
In fact, it may well be illegal to do so depending on jurisdiction.

Git a rope

We need to somehow better defend against these kinds of posts.
@Bob I'm using publicly-available resources.
As a regular, I find these kinds of trends disturbing as they represent a deviation from "normal" background spam activity.
A very obvious one, at that.

@JourneymanGeek Can people sleep at your hackerspace?

@ekaj: No idea

you no longer visit much?

Not really. And I've been insanely busy too.

ah, work and stuffs
1200sq ft seems so small for such a space though =p

5:54 AM
Yeah, its small.

What's the default font size of Title bars ?
I am 18 now ._.

@JourneymanGeek It was size of the title bars xD
btw i'm 2 years older than that :'(

I have a 25x30cm 3mm thick slab of neoprene rubber :P

Mouse pad?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Nah. Needed some rubber for a glass door's hinge.
I don't think it would make a particularly good mouse pad. Too much friction.
And it smells... rubbery :P

11:32 AM
Hey, guys!
Is anyone good with Ad-Hoc networks or plugging ethernet cables into laptops and then being very disappointed at the results?

Bob
11:52 AM
@AlexMitan I know enough about them to utterly despise them.
Heavily recommend buying a $10-$20 wireless access point.

@Bob I know, I knoow, but I really need some help

Bob
!!tell 22544378 meta

@AlexMitan Please don't ask to ask; if you simply ask your actual question, we will help you if we know the answer or can help you find it. This is much faster and simpler than asking if it's OK to ask. As a rule, it is always OK to ask in this channel. Please go ahead.

Bob
That said, I'll be back in a bit.

Q: How can I use Windows 7 Ad-Hoc wireless networks for computer gaming LANs?

Alex MitanWe intend to play Terraria 1.3 without having any routers or modems.. I've been told that we can make an Ad-Hoc Network to play, and so we did, we both connected to one, but it didn't work for us, as my friend wasn't sure what IP to join. We also have an impractically long ethernet cable that we...

here we go

Bob
11:54 AM
@AlexMitan ipconfig /all will list IPs
pick the IP listed for whichever wireless interface
or just try all of them
Don't worry about crossover. Most NICs do auto-MDIX now and it's actually a requirement for gig-e

@Bob I... o..kay..

Bob
Oh, wait. Not a req, but in the spec officially as optional.
Meh.

But thank you very much for the ipconfig /all, I can see a lot more now, we'll try all of them

Bob
in fact, pretty sure that's a dupe of your Q

12:57 PM
I've not seen a gig-e adaptor that hasn't
even crappy realtek ones

3:29 PM
jesus this is hurting my head
I need to validate and confirm if a number is either a MPAN, a MPRN, or neither (it maybe a customer ID, or some other rubbish).

3:45 PM
yeah :(
I found code online for validating the full 21digit mpan, but we don't store that d:

@Hennes Are you thinking of the Root Access room instead?

Bob
@djsmiley2k 21 digits => MPAN, 11 digits => MPRN
easy enough
You can run them through the check algos to make sure

4 mins ago, by djsmiley2k
I found code online for validating the full 21digit mpan, but we don't store that d:
at least I've not seen any 21digit ones :D
and some mprns are shorter
but we also have 'customer id's which ..... yeah
collisions possibly

Bob
@djsmiley2k ...that makes no sense
you have a number
you want to know if it's a MPAN or not
well, if it's 21 digits it probably is. if it's not 21 digits then it's not

13digits
so what is it?

Bob
3:50 PM
@djsmiley2k Not an MPAN.

I KNOW it's a mpan
it's part of the full mpan
but not the full thing, because no customer ever, provided that ±_±

Bob
@djsmiley2k ok then, core is 13 digits
21 => full MPAN, 13 => core MPAN, 11 => MPRN
there, done

ooooo
maybe it's always 13, lets check

Bob
I don't even live in a country where this is relevant!
> An MPAN is commonly separated into two sections: the core and the supplementary data. The core is the final 13 digits and is the unique identifier. The supplementary data gives information about the characteristics of the supply[3] and is the responsibility of the supplier.
Why do you even have all this data smooshed together?!

@Bob lol due to terrible developers and other issues
hell, the database column is called 'mpan_mprn' ffs

Bob
3:55 PM
@djsmiley2k Then there's probably a relationship elsewhere that specifies which it is.

it was a old telephone system product, adapted to power...
@Bob I'd be willing to bet it does strlen

Bob
wouldn't be unheard of, if a bit weird... a customer could have two entries in that table, each one linked to a different account via a foreign key

yup
that threw me (why is every customer returned twice?)
then 'oh' <cries>

4:12 PM
that along with me completely accidently breakign hte code each time i change osmething makes everyhting fun

Wow... just found one of these in my cupboard, didn't even know I still had it!
The Nokia M1122 is a 4-port ADSL router that is known to have been sold in Europe and New Zealand in 2000-2002. In addition to its main task, the M1122 is capable of acting as a 10 Mbit/s hub in a local area network. The M1122 had a sister model, Nokia MW1122, with Wireless LAN capabilities. These two were the last ADSL routers ever to be manufactured by Nokia. In the last half of 2002 the model was discontinued along with the rest of Nokia's ADSL router operations. == Technical specifications == ANSI T1.413 Issue 2 (chipset by Alcatel) can be used either in routed or bridged mode connectors: ADSL...
The last ADSL router ever produced by Nokia.
