11:55 AM
Good morning.

12:23 PM
For those interested in my thoughts:

A: How much idle chatter do we tolerate in The 2nd Monitor?

nhgrifWhile I agree in principle with what is attempting to be accomplished in The 2nd Monitor, I consider the behavior of those trying to accomplish that goal to be entirely unconscionable and absurd. This is not how you moderate chat rooms--not with an iron fist. A singular person can't just decide...

If at any point in time rolfl is removed as a room owner here, feel free to invite me back here.

12:35 PM
(Hint: It will still be a while before I return either way.)
And anyone is welcome here.

I think I'm done man. I never thought it, but I think I'm done with CR.

I might be too.... but I want to see if they can get the 2nd monitor straightened out.
Like, that was my first most immediate thought was that I was just done with it.
And as soon as I had that thought, that's when I withdrew as a moderator.

Yeah. Exactly. I just did the same.
As soon as I thought it, I withdrew.

I don't understand why this all had to happen right now
Like just before the election
That's what I don't get.
I seem to be the only person who actually agrees with what rolfl is trying to do...
I'm just the most offended because I think that its being done in the worst possible way.
And it wasn't even completely clear what he was doing until he had already done a lot.

Which is ironic. Because even though I don't agree with what he's trying to do, I do agree with the actions he took yesterday.

12:41 PM
If he had just taken the time to encourage the regulars to help him out in this endeavor (say with a meta post that was for a week or so) this could've gone better

It just should have been discussed. On meta.

And he would have either seen that the community at large didn't agree, so he needed to not act against the community
Or that the community at large agreed, and would have helped him out immensely
That's my big problem... the acting unilaterally instead of working with the community.
One person can't dictate what a group of people will talk about. You have to get that group of people to agree to what they'll talk about and where and when.

Yes. I understand mods sometimes need to decide, but...
That ^^

Basically, everything that was in my nomination post needs to be applied...
Sometimes you need to decide, but no one should be asking "why that decision?"

All in all, I just don't need the drama. I feel like I just lost a friend.

12:43 PM
Here's something to consider though
Long term, a single chat room would have never worked. Never.

True enough.

These extra chatrooms would have needed to happen eventually
After the graduation process was complete might have been a better time to start the process...
Or well before it started...

Yes. A natural part of the growing process and... Yes.
Either.

Or actually, now is fine, as long as the community is working with you.
You can't just dictate to a group of people how they'll behave.

And only after it was brought up that^^

12:45 PM
As my meta answer states... 20 years of chatting has taught me that.

I might pop in here from time to time, and I'll still be in the VBA room, but I don't expect that I'll participate much from here on out.
When it stops being fun, stop doing it.

1:31 PM
So what is this room about, the description is quite vague ^^

1:59 PM
It's about programming.

2:55 PM
Someone ever used a good scientific plotting tool before for creating histograms?

3:11 PM
Not I.

2 hours later…
5:28 PM
@nhgrif "NO idle chat is allowed in The 2nd Monitor.* This is for site business only (almost as a less official, more casual version of the Meta). - My thoughts exactly"
You cant have it both ways
Anyway
Monking @all

Monking

whats your favourite Language to code in @DJanssens

Python
Im biased though, since I've been using python for the last 2 years
I also like Java quite a lot.
What about you @CodeX

And what type of things do you code with Python?
I'm a PHP developer.. :/
Im trying to learn Java

uhm in the past 2 years its most of the time writing small scripts
My research internships were written in python, which was most of the time data manipulations etc.
Java is pretty cool since its cross platform and if you know java, you can 'easily' delve into Android programming.
I've worked quite a lot with PHP, but all code I ever wrote was so ugly. :D

5:37 PM
What did the scripts do?
Were they web based or oflfine?
where did that l come from.. :/
I have android studio which is quite intuitive
PHP can look really clean if you get the spacing right
PHP code tends to be quite repetitive though
brb

I agree, but it lacks some coding concepts.
The hardest thing imo about PHP is because everything works in a single page-request.
android studio is indeed pretty good ;)
Uhm the scripts were actually taking Stack Overflow data and preprocessed those and performed queries on them. :D

5:55 PM
I remember helping you out with a query or two.

I guess it were even more ;)
Thank you for that (again).
What are you up to lately @nhgrif?

Working for a new company doing iOS development full time.

@codeX if you plan to create websites in the new language you're gonna check out. Perhaps consider taking a look at the Django framework in python. I started with it a few weeks ago and it's so cool..
Cool. :)
Objective-C or Swift?

Swift pretty much. There's Objective-C stuff in here in some of the libraries.

I've heard great stuff about Swift :)

6:13 PM
Right now doing a lot of work with CoreLocation and MapKit.

sounds like chinese to me :P
I have never touched swift before

CoreLocation and MapKit are just Apple libraries.
for dealing with user location and maps, respectively

ah cool.

6:30 PM
I would love to spend the day with one of you guys just to see what you do

6:50 PM
What do you think we do?

are u a student @CodeX?
It's not like we are doing rocket science. At least not here. It's very basic :D

7:03 PM
So..
I'm going to go and do something that involves alcohol, oxygen and shiny happy people holding hands..

haha
You still didn't tell me what you do for a living

People here are counting today as a Friday (it sort of is), and on Friday, beer starts at 2.
It's 2:11.

Just heading out to ship my machine back to my ex employer and pick some up @nhgrif.

7:22 PM
what holiday is it tomorrow in the USA?

Birthday
On Saturday, observed Friday.
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States...

Birthday is right brother.

We celebrate it by watching that Will Smith movie.

8:30 PM
@nhgrif you a Firefly fan? Keep your eyes open for Jane.
Last time I watched Independence Day was the first time I noticed.

No.
