Yes....

1. I omit the messages as ideally, they never get shown anyway.
It's much more important to add messages to preconditions, as they may get shown

2. I mean them often as comments. So commenting on them mean commenting better, but my point of laziness is pretty low. Writing
`assert 0 < x && x < modulus;`
as about as good as writing
// x is positive and less than modulus
It gives you already some information.
*You're formulating it as a reason against asserts, but what you want is more verbosity.*

I was wondering why my JOIN wasn't working, but then I noticed the site was down
Back up then
lol sqlfiddle was down there for a sec

I agree that more verbosity is needed. It's just rather orthogonal to asserts. And yes, I've added already some text to some of them.

Probably more than I've capped, too. Your answers really aren't that bad. ;-)

monking!

3:20 AM
G'day everybody!

It appears I've capped 7 times.

we have 8 candidates, 7 hours into the nomination phase... this election is going to be awesome!
hi @Snowhawk04!

hmm, loki hasn't nominated himself yet

@QPaysTaxes Nah, it's okay. I'm not too concerned about capping.
@Snowhawk04 I don't think he's ever been crazy about moderating. He just likes to answer questions.
They're only bad if they're used to gain an advantage, including providing extra votes for others. One user was caught doing that.

mortarboard eludes me

3:25 AM
@QPaysTaxes, I have no necromancers, right, and I pulled a random PHP question for @all to answer to get minimum rep, and the question gets a necro

Q: Can't get my toString to print

user76834I wrote this class StudentDemo to test my code I'm doing for an assignment. When I run it the convertGrade() method works but my print() and toString() methods don't output. public class StudentDemo { public static void main(String[] args) { Undergrad u = new Undergrad((float) 3.8, 100, "...

@QPaysTaxes 1. any assert is better than nothing as it adds docs. 2. adding docs to asserts is ceteris paribus (at most) as good as adding it elsewhere.

@QPaysTaxes One use I've heard of is viewing the site again as a new user and not a high-rep one.

hopefully a harmless questions for mods/mods-to-be... how important is being in the 'right' timezone to being a moderator, in order to work with the rest in providing 'round-the-clock' coverage? i forgot which SE site's elections did i see some nominees mentioning (even briefly) about this point...

3:28 AM
@h.j.k. is there such a thing as a "right" time zone to be in?

e.g. US eastern / western / some asia-based timezone, and then uk/conti europe

@h.j.k. That's a tough one, considering voters can't really judge heavily on that nor can they force a candidate to give such information. It is probably more of a convenience but is not really a requirement.

@Jamal makes sense

I think it's ideal if all mods aren't sleeping at the same time

I'm not sure about the other mods, but I'm in UTC-06:00.

3:31 AM
> For example, users who don't know that you have to use -ea might use them to check the arguments of a method, which would end up introducing bugs.

Then I'd educate or kill them. It depends. :D:D

Even then, "all mods being asleep" may only be a problem if there's some rogue user causing trouble and won't stop.

actually what's ideal is really that all mods do their fair share.. and ^^ that
besides...
2 days ago, by RubberDuck
And we didn't even need a mod.

@QPaysTaxes Actually, I'm adding them like crazy when something doesn't work. The opposite from carefulness, I'd say. But then I mostly have them again, I know.

@Mat'sMug Yep. The less a moderator is needed, the better. That crap wouldn't have warranted destruction anyway.

@Jamal you've seen that user's other posts? he's one user to keep an eye on IMO

3:37 AM
Yes, but he can no longer answer. He might as well ragequit.

@Snowhawk04 Loki declined.

ah, that explains it

Only mods can.

@Jamal I thought answer ban wasn't active on CR

It's actually active everywhere, and question bans have recently been enabled everywhere.

3:38 AM
ah
good to know :)

It makes it easier on mods because we don't have to suspend a user just for that.

@Quill I don't think so man. I haven't been active for a while now. working on an electrical project and not much time for C# :) But I would love to some time

That sucks
If mjolka's not running, that'd also make me the only Aussie candidate, lol

I hope @mjolka runs.

Thus far
And yeah

3:41 AM
I think age is utterly irrelevant

@Hosch250 thank you so much man. We ( at least I) can't catch your dust :)

people skills

@Quill Oh that way. So you're going for the Aussie power :) Our best wishes are with you though :D
@QPaysTaxes cough

@Mehrad There's more deserving candidates for sure, but I'm not losing anything by applying, other than pride
@QPaysTaxes I try not to be
@Mat'sMug What about them?

2 mins ago, by QPaysTaxes
It's not about skill or anything

3:43 AM
@Quill Everybody needs to start from somewhere. Even if you don't get it, it'll still be a good experience

I think I misread that

@QPaysTaxes Sarcasm is different to being an asshole

> But you're, for example, not using them to check that the arguments fit the preconditions of the method.
Sure, that's what `Preconditions.checkArgument` is for. Unless it's a private method, and then assert is fine.

@Mehrad Yeah, for sure :-)
@QPaysTaxes Quite a few >18yr old users here are often sarcastic

@Quill And the best part of it if you get it is that, mods have an access to the translator so you can translate us Aussies to the common English :D So we won't get misunderstood :P

3:46 AM
@QPaysTaxes MEAN doesn't belong on the Stack Exchange Network! *cracks fist*

A: 2015 Community Moderator Election - Nomination Requests

Hosch250I nominate Simon André Forsberg. I, and several users in chat, think he would make a good moderator for the site.

@Quill Not today though. I really like young people trying. That's how it builds up.

@Hosch250 aaw, beat me to it!

And there are some border cases:

Some tests are too expensive and the wrong argument get discovered later anyway. Something like testing that something is a prime might be the case. Pretty uncommon, I guess I did it once or twice in the last 10 years.

A package private method is another border case. If the test is cheap, I use Preconditions. If it's expensive, I use assert.

@QPaysTaxes sigh unfortunately, that it does

Just 5 more answers to the discussion badge on meta.
I have all the votes.

Nope. Go get them yourself.
Do you even have any posts on meta?

I usually do, that was an oversight. Fixed.

I only have 4 votes left.

time to spend them all!

If anyone is interested, though, I'm 4-away from a second silver answer badge.

@QPaysTaxes there's a shiny badge for that

@Snowhawk04 I'll wait til later so I don't get locked out of the queues.

IIRC, yes

@QPaysTaxes It appears someone found it: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/94854/…

A: Tic-Tac-Toe program in about 250 lines

OldCurmudgeonProbably not at all helpful to OP but seems to relate to the title a little. I came across this little TTT game many years ago (2004 if the date on the file is correct) and kept it because it is actually a real implementation of Tic Tac Toe. #define f(X,g,p,N,M)M{return X?a&b?a&b&1<<i&&m(b,a^1<<...

There was a better one below it, so I just flagged.

and I just lost 1 rep
er, earned 19
@QPaysTaxes yup. and flagged as VLQ for being essentially a [golfed] code dump.
thanks @Santas!
@QPaysTaxes also valid IMO

4:17 AM
@Mat'sMug I voted to delete.

I think OP will remove it themselves

for some values of "nice" ;-)

Mine is LOLCODE too.

it's also the top-voted question
I earned 900 from bounties, I think it beats it ;-)

thanks, stalker santa!

BTW, when you have some free time from the election, @Mat'sMug, mind checking out my rename refactoring?
It might need more, it might be enough to close the issue, I don't know exactly what you're looking for.
See you in the RD room tomorrow.

A: Writing data into an image

Ethan Bierlein First off, you seem very confused with your whitespace. In Python, you shouldn't have "padding" around the contents of braces, {[()]}. For example, the line, xrange( 3-len( pixel_data ) ) would become xrange(3 - len(pixelData)). Secondly, you need whitespace between your operators. For example, ...

Yay! A shiny!

It looks like you've figured out a fix - instead of posting a non-answer, I suggest you edit your post with the working code, and reword the question to ask something along the lines of "what could be improved in this implementation?" - these downvotes can easily turn into upvotes and the question can be reopened if you do that :) — Mat's Mug 6 secs ago
