Q: Building Blocks

Vinoth KumarHow to print a text as building blocks in java For eg: "This movie is great". should be printed as " This This movie This movie is This movie is great This movie is great" This movie is great".

@CaptainObvious wow (vtc feature req)
Welcome to Code Review, here, we review working code. You're asking for a feature implementation request, those are strictly off-topic here. Try asking your question on Stack Overflow. Good Luck! — Quill 15 secs ago

BoltClock has disappointed me this morning...

what about those who can't?

I posted a question on SO meta asking about a specific question. A Swift question that I felt should be closed as a duplicate of a question asked 4 years ago (before Swift existed)
Because the question isn't about Swift or Objective-C, but rather is about an iOS framework.
Anyway... BoltClock made some comment about multiple languages (human languages) or something and it descended into a debate between him and someone else about the values (or lack thereof) of having multiple languages (versus one language) (programming or otherwise)
none of which had anything to do with my question...
So I self-deleted my question since flagging every comment on my question wasn't having a quick enough effect..
(and because by this point, the asker of that Swift question already agrees with me even)

12:50 PM
stahp wut?

you deleted your MSO question because of a pointless and only marginally relevant discussion in the comments?

If it weren't a moderator, I would've left it.
BoltClock will see my last comment there.
He will wonder why it's deleted.
Not a single comment there has anything to do with my question except my first comment, which was an effort to interpret BoltClock's first comment as somehow relevant.

and if he's a good moderator, he'll clean the comment thead and undelete the question
If he doesn't I hope you flag the question with "other" so another mod can do it

And I'll be fine with it being undeleted after the comments are cleaned up.

12:53 PM
that comment says something very different

Hmm?

it sounds a little like "Oh if you won't play with me then I'll just take my cool things and leave"

Or... "If everyone is too distracted for this meeting, we can have it another time"?

you did not consider flagging those comments as not constructive?

I flagged all of them
And boltclock wasn't slowing down I posting them even after they were all flagged
So I deleted Q

1:04 PM
Hmm deleting the q would clear the flags too

@RMunroe ummmmmmmm what now?
Oh god..... Blinking marquee!

I flagged one after deleting @rolfl
Best course of action? How do I tell Bolt "wtf man?"

if you check the "Require code reviews using pull request", then direct commits will not be allowed. It may be that Project Admins (who have the force push permission by default) are allowed to bypass this policy, I haven't checked. By setting the minimum reviewers to 1 and allowing a person to accept their own request, you're effectively enforcing the build to succeed and allow a person to them commit their own PR. — jessehouwing 31 secs ago

I don't think anyone just has a working visa laying around in their drawer

@JeroenVannevel Then you say "It is in progress" and you get started on it.

2:10 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I don't think there's much to get started on, since all I have to do is schedule a meeting with the US embassy and give them information about my finances, intentions, the company, that stuff
which requires an existing job offer
so I think I can't start until they agree to have me
at least I think
Oh, maybe a sponsor..
First step: "1. You secure employment."

@JeroenVannevel There's a decent enough chance that you might have to educate the employer on what needs to be done here.
Just because an employer is open to hiring a foreigner does not mean that they are aware of the steps involved in making that happen.

Perhaps. It's Xamarin though, wouldn't they have already had foreign interns?

Maybe. Who knows.
Some, also won't want to actually sponsor you, but will hire you if someone else has already sponsored you and got your visa stuff done, etc.

Yeah, I'll probably have to go through a sponsor organisation

@Lyle'sMug Maybe put the first block in a quote?

3:37 PM
But I got an example for you

@SimonAndréForsberg holding on to your #5 spot I see :)

The thing we use in our current codebase to exchange data.

@Quill no because that is code I wrote, right?

it's called DataUnit.
It's basically a Map<String, Object>...
aside from the fact that it doesn't implement Map

@Lyle'sMug Yeah, not too sure what the best approach is there, thats why I had a question mark at the end

3:39 PM
Stubborness ensues:
This is correct for Swift, but the question is asking specifically how to do this with an Objective-C object — Yerk 22 mins ago

and that it's got some other extras

@CaptainObvious and another that would have been prevented with that red popup

and that it's in general crap

That, sounds, awful. Blech.
My definition of annoying is walking up and down a hill for three hours leaning over and trimming plants about a foot high.

okay I think I finally got it..
the funny part is: sometimes that stuff gets actually passed around as a Map...
and all domain Objects actually are Maps on the inside
but they don't implement that Interface either
so there's no single possible method that can handle both domain objects and Data Units..

3:41 PM
Wow, that may be even more annoying than yard work.

because who would need central utilities that could
anyways, Time's out I gotta run to get a good train ;)
if you want me to rant, feel free to ping me on a weekday

    public string Name { get; }
    public string Value { get; }
    public string ModifiedBy { get; }
    public DateTime ModifiedDt { get; }
}
Setting being an abstract class...

because they are not implementing the Abstract class?

...ViewSetting isn't implementing any of it

so what he is proposing, really doesn't make sense....right?
you would add the editing methods to the service layer right?

if that question were asked today, it would be slapped with "broken code" close votes IMO

@Mat'sMug you first...

3:49 PM
if not "hypothetical" / "not yet written"

and that is kind of the point of my answer really.... that what OP is asking doesn't make sense, that you wouldn't want to do that.

@Lyle'sMug I'd just leave it alone, it's old

@Mat'sMug I edited my answer so I don't like too much like an idiot.

Once you have the question answered you can use the code review portion of overflow to have your code peer reviewed to try and optimize it, etc. Fred has been giving suggestions to optimize your code on the way while also correcting several critical issues with it. :) — Sanuel Jackson 7 secs ago

You will notice that I post questions somewhat regularly too, and, without fail, I learn something as well from each answer.

If you can't even spot something that someone might think is suspect and explain why thinking it's suspect is would be wrong, then I'd avoid posting an answer...

@nhgrif wait, I need to read this again. ...and again.... and again.... ...nope.

6:41 PM
Where's my double-negative thing.....

I need a break

@nhgrif Why do you think I asked here in the chat before answering that there were no more improvements?
@rolfl I didn't noticed you post questions regularly.

I'm 100% confused as to what point you're trying to make.
@IsmaelMiguel Are you wanting to post answers that say "This code is perfect." and that's it?

@nhgrif OFC NOT! If it was for that, then I wouldn't even ask.
Why ask just to say that there's nothing wrong?

6:43 PM
I literally can't even begin to understand what you're asking.
What's your question...?

What?

I feel like I'm watching a skit

I asked, a long time ago, what the meta says about saying that a question has nothing to improve
@JeroenVannevel A what?

grabs popcorn

@IsmaelMiguel Okay... what's your question now
Please, someone, anyone, catch me up.
Where am I lost at?
Please.
I'm literally begging.

6:45 PM
Nope, let's all just move on, nothing constructive to happen here.

@nhgrif There's no question now

It's still about me asking if it was fine to answer saying that there's no improvement in a question I asked.

@JeroenVannevel The most important part to protect isn't the screen but the corners.

> Keep your Surface 3 snug, safe, and brand-spanking new
may as well not use it, and have the same result

6:46 PM
@nhgrif If I will have it in my bag, then I certainly need screen protection
Don't want nasty scratches on it

But nice scratches are OK?

@IsmaelMiguel Saying nothing beyond the fact that there's no improvement? On a question you asked? Seems ludicrously arrogant.

I wasn't going to take it with me to Argentina but since my mom brought it up.. It's hard to let go now

@JeroenVannevel Then get a different case. But the most important thing is to make sure the corners are sturdily protected.

Aren't the corners protected in that second one?

6:49 PM
@JeroenVannevel FWIW, I have always loved the simple neoprene sleeve systems.

It has leather with bumper technology

they work, protect things, are cheap, and you can use them as a cushion when you sit on a hard surface.

@JeroenVannevel I don't know. I was more addressing your apparent confusion about unprotected screen.

@nhgrif Before doing something stupid, I asked. That's why I didn't answered it on that way.

@rolfl Not quite sure what I should imagine with that. One of those things that you zip along the sides?
@nhgrif Yeah okay. Still, screen protection is important to me as well since it won't just stand on a table at home

6:51 PM

@JeroenVannevel Yeah. Why not get one of the cases with the built in keyboard, where keyboard folds into screen cover when not in use?

@nhgrif Because those are 160$+

@JeroenVannevel About the link you sent, in American Dollars, it seems to be cheap but functional. It has a flaw, however. There's nothing to keep it closed.

Looks like you're right

Wow. Now I think I just wrote my longest answer.

6:54 PM
That's acceptable though, I can just place it in a way that it won't fall open

But while you are walking, it will be banging everywhere.
Unless you hold it shut

A: A turn based battle simulator (aka Pokemon) in Python 3.4

Ethan BierleinStyle Your style is actually quite nice! I just have a few small nitpicky tips and such. First off, when running main, you need run it under an if __name__ == "__main__": block. See this Stackoverflow answer for more information on this. The comment at the top of your code file should be a doc...

How would you walk with it without holding it shut?

@IsmaelMiguel Hmm yeah?

@JeroenVannevel I can't describe that. It's simply impossible to put it into words.

6:56 PM
okay, found a better one
Belgian store apparently has different accesories than US store
You have to get it out to use but that's okay

@EthanBierlein Nevermind, I spoke 2 seconds before the link showed up. But I've seen a pattern on python answers. Most have saying to run the code under if __name__ == "__main__":

Yup
1120
Q: What does `if __name__ == "__main__":` do?

DevotedWhat does the if __name__ == "__main__": do? # Threading example import time, thread def myfunction(string, sleeptime, lock, *args): while 1: lock.acquire() time.sleep(sleeptime) lock.release() time.sleep(sleeptime) if __name__ == "__main__": lock = threa...

@JeroenVannevel Too expencive. I wouldn't give more than 25€ on that
@EthanBierlein I don't do python

Show me something of 25€ then

@JeroenVannevel From there? I would rather find an invisible man at night
