I think this room needs some content :-)

Testing... :-)
Possibly. I have no idea what kind of content you have in mind, though.
We could try to decide something about that promotion of the site. No idea where to start about that either, however :-)

I guess a message saying that the room needs some content counts as content, in a way ;-)
but mostly I figured we could kick off a discussion about publicity

Okay, kick away then. I posted about the site on facebook but I am not sure anyone noticed.

same here. I've actually tried posting links to questions every once in a while, hoping that some of them might catch people's interest more than just a link to the site

I might consider sending an explicit email to some physicists at my school and friends interested in physics but I don't want to be spamming. So I'll have to think about it some more.
Yeah, that's probably a good idea. I think I'll do that from time to time on particularly nice questions.

9:06 PM
I also had an email sent out to the general mailing list at my physics department, that might have gotten a couple of people in. I suppose you could try that. (I did clear it with the assistant dept. chair first)

Problem is, we don't have a mailing list at our department (or at least I am not aware of it). So I'd have to collect emails manually. But yeah, I'll try talking about whether it'd be okay with someone from the department. That way at least I'll have some cover :-)

Ah, ok... well good luck
Perhaps some of the higher-ups will know about ways to get in touch with a lot of people at once, too.

Yeah, that might be possible.
By the way, under Onsager's solution you wrote that it's out of your area of expertise. What is your area then? Incidentally, I noticed that you blogged about something from string theory. Is that it?

9:25 PM
I'm actually concentrating in high-energy particle phenomenology right now
but I've worked a bit with string theory in the past and hope to do so again in the future
how about you?

dealing with standard model or something more fancy like SUSY exclusion?

right now just the standard model, mainly QCD

mainly statistical physics. right now massless field on a lattice with strange (non-convex) potential for two-point interaction
in other words, nothing to do with nature (at least to my knowledge), just some model. although it might turn out that it's useful somewhere

hey, it could be more practical than string theory ;-)
...I actually have to leave for a meeting now, but I'll be back around later

hehe
mkay. see you later then

2 hours later…

11:13 PM
27 messages moved from Physics
Room problem fixed.

11:28 PM
@mbq thanks for straightening that out!

@mbq yeah. Not sure what the difference is though :-)
I mean between this room and the other. But I guess it doesn't matter. At least if we won't be moving again :-)

mbq
This room is binded to the site as an "official room".
Or at least should be...

Makes sense to me, I guess we'll just have to keep it active enough not to get deleted again

mbq
There is an idea of making "chat events" weekly or so, so many people will come and talk about something.

It works nice with photo.SE, they're making a photo commenting sessions.
We could make a journal club.
Or something.

yeah, that makes sense. I was wondering why this room was better before and David couldn't think of a reason (if I remember correctly) and so I assumed there is no particular reason
and +1 for the chat events

11:45 PM
@Marek You can express +1 on chat with starring a post -- there is a small black star on the right of a post when you hold your mouse over it.

@mbq thanks

mbq
It is even a badge for one star and 10 chat posts.

Heh. And to what SE account does the badge go to? All of them? Just physics.SE? Somewhere else?

mbq
Each chat room can have a host site -- if it is set, its logo appears next to new message box. Then a badge is given on a site X if you have 10 posts and one starred accumulated over all rooms with host=X.
