Anyone know why my bash command grep -R '.code' --include=*.sv is not including the .? It's as if it's not there

@Stacey did you intend to search for a file that contains the 5-character string .code ? Then use either grep -FR .code … or fgrep -R .code … or grep -R '\.code' …. In a regular expression, . means “any character”, so your command returns lines containing code anywhere except at the very beginning.

2:28 PM
@Gilles yes, I intended to search with the full stop in front. So the regular expression still applies to single quotes?

@Stacey Yes. The single quotes prevent shell expansion, so for example \.code would pass .code to grep (because the shell expands \. to .), whereas '\.code' passes \.code to grep. Using .code or '.code' passes .code to grep, and . is a regexp metacharacter.
I know we have answers about this on the site. Look for questions tagged .

@Gilles great, thanks

@Gilles @Stacey "whereas '\.code' passes .code to grep" should be that it passes \.code to grep. It may have taken him thousands of posts, but finally he's made a typo.

@derobert <whistle> typo? What typo?

@Gilles Even mod hour-ago post editing skillz leave a revision history :-P

@derobert I know
I just wanted to fix the typo so as not to leave a confusing message

but it appears you can't link to old versions, or at least they don't box correctly.

you can link to the history, but not to individual revisions

4:03 PM
Each history entry has the link icon show up for it, but it seems to be the same link.
That seems like a bug. Probably only the current version (up top on the history page) should have a link icon.

@derobert Gilles made a typo??!!

@FaheemMitha Indeed. I expect it to be on the 11 o'clock news.

@Braiam voted to reopen
@derobert shock horror
@derobert outstanding reopen request by @Braiam

@FaheemMitha already voted to reopen
one more needed

@derobert ok
That multiple site reason should include the other site link(s).
@derobert what do you think of cmake?

4:14 PM
@FaheemMitha haven't used it enough to have an opinion on it

@derobert oh. trying it for a project. so far, quite impressed.
Not really a fan of DSLs in general, but I guess they do have their uses.

/me grumbles about getting chat flags in Russian

They should take it to a Russian site.

Well, for all I know, someone posted something offensive in an English chat.se room. Just in Russian. Could be a troll. No idea.
How can someone begin to believe this is answerable question:

Q: Fedora 21 internet is very slow

Jose DanielI installed Fedora in a computer, everything works fine except the internet. The internet is very very slow in my computer using Fedora, in the same place there are computers using Windows, IOS and Android and they work perfectly, just the one with Fedora. The same computer was using Windows and...

Wow, a Cmake developer actually fixed my cmake bug. The one I filed yesterday. I'm impressed. And it only took me 2 hours to file.

4:39 PM
@derobert it can be anything, from the server being slow to the unicorn chewing cables...

I hate it when the unicorns chew through the Ethernet cables.
They're second only to backhoes as a threat to connectivity.

It might be Gremlins.
@derobert It might be an answerable question. I once has a computer that was running a DSN cache service which was misbehaving. I was completely unaware that service was running. Intermittent DNS failures. Yay. Amazingly, someone managed to diagnose it over the net.
I can't remember what that DNS cache service was called, but it is all archived in my email.

@FaheemMitha Sure, it might be doable with some details. But there are absolutely none in the question.

@derobert The kind of people who ask these questions are absolutely terrible at providing details. And when they finally get around to it, they do it in blurry screenshots.

Yeah. And from " have read several post talking about disabling IPv6, issues with the wireless card, etc." you'd think OP would know those details are important.

Incidentally, that was my second Linux installation, and the first I did (mostly) solo. I was very proud at the time. SuSE it was. 1999.

Just one more vote needed to put it on hold.

5:57 PM
Shall I adminster the coup de grace?
@derobert Not including you, apparently.

@FaheemMitha Oops, I thought I had...

6:33 PM
I think there should be a little ditty - perhaps starting "Do you really want to be, With Python 3?" lwn.net/Articles/641582
