:D

@maniat1k if you have a question, just ask it. Many of us keep an eye on the chat even if nobody happens to be talking at the moment. Just ask your question and if anyone can help, they will.

12:45 PM
Should I delete this one: unix.stackexchange.com/a/200620/38906
Just getting downvoted without any reason :(

@cuonglm Never delete unless you receive at least 3 downvotes...
(you never know who's going to vote up)
@cuonglm You're a 36K user now! You must be getting used to @$$holes voting down for no reason... :P

1:36 PM
@Fabby: I dont care about the rep
Just one to know the reason

@cuonglm Maybe they don't like your username. Perhaps they didn't understand your answer. Maybe they are having a bad day. Or they thought they were clicking a different post. They might have done it by accident. They might have thought you were someone else. They might always downvote users whose name starts with a c. Who knows? It's never worth it to worry about downvotes unless there is something wrong with your answer.

@terdon: thanks

Seriously, don't bother about random downvotes. I don't think any of the regulars would downvote one of your answers with no explanation. This means that the downvote was almost certainly by some random user who will, again, almost certainly never see your "Why the downvote?" comment. Just shrug and move on.

Hi @terdon
Hey @cuonglm
@terdon We ought to stick that comment somewhere prominent on the site... :-)
Oh, I see I complemented you that all the way back in December 2014. <Sigh>. Those were the days.
So if I make an LVM snapshot, can I back that up without it changing on me?
Damn, not enough space on the VG.

3:51 PM
@FaheemMitha: I'm here

@cuonglm Hi, how's it going?
It's funny that @terdon recycled his comment from last year for you. :-)
You shouldn't worry about downvotes.
If someone has an issue with your answer (or question) he would presumably comment.

@FaheemMitha: Yes, I got that.

Trying to figure out how to back up /home without making my computer unusable for the next day. Sigh.
Maybe I'll just run a rsync.
It seems snapshots have to be made in the same VG. Is that correct?

4:09 PM
Oh, actually the snapshot volume does not need to be the same size as the original volume, so I should be Ok. Hopefully. Can anyone confirm?

4:23 PM
@FaheemMitha :)

4:34 PM
@FaheemMitha I think so. How out of space are you on the VG?
@FaheemMitha Yeah, it only needs to be as large as the amount of data that'll change while the snapshot exists
You can monitor how much of its space has been used and extend it as needed, too.

@derobert 46 GB or so left.
debian 1 9 0 wz--n- 465.76g 47.12g
47.

@FaheemMitha That should be plenty, as long as you're not going to change 46 GB of data while holding that snapshot.

I guess I'll go with 10GB that should be enough I think.
@derobert Hopefully not. But I might go mad and try to download all of Cheers before tomorrow morning. Who knows.

yeah, once you create it, lvs will show how much of the snapshot space has been used—keep an eye on it, you can always lvextend the snapshot

@derobert I'll bear that in mind, thanks.
Last backup before the upgrade.

4:42 PM
@FaheemMitha Could be worse. You could try to download all of the Daily Show. Or Saturday Night Live. Or NOVA.

@derobert The first two don't particularly appeal. And I don't really know the third one.

What about all 57 years of CBS's Guiding Light? (I don't think I've seen a single episode...) That'd eat plenty of disk.

@derobert Yuck. That assumes someone has actually bothered to record that. 57 years? Wonder who watches all that stuff.

Who knows. It aired in the middle of the day. It was probably cheap to make.

Apparently there are a number of daytime shows, which, if they were people, would be senior citizens.
At least in the US. In Japan they probably have long-running manga/anime shows.
@derobert I did vcreate -L10G -s -n homebackup /dev/debian/home. Is that Ok?

4:46 PM
@FaheemMitha Yes. Sazae-san is famous for that.

@derobert I don't know that one either.
@derobert Apparently Anna fixed your issue. With Sound Recording or whatever it was. Maybe you saw her answer.

@FaheemMitha If it ran, that's fine
@FaheemMitha yep, saw it

@derobert yes, it ran.

So apparently you can put the full path to the device there. I've always just used vgname/lvname

LV VG Attr LSize Pool Origin Data% Move Log Copy% Convert
jessie data -wi-ao-- 20.00g
local_src data -wi-ao-- 80.00g
videobuild data -wi-ao-- 20.00g
wheezy data -wi-a--- 20.00g
wheezy32 data -wi-ao-- 20.00g

home debian owi-aos- 93.13g
homebackup debian swi-a-s- 10.00g home 0.11

4:49 PM
so that 0.11% is the one to keep an eye on

the 0.11 appears to be under Data%. Wonder what that means.

that's the portion used

Oh, that's the percent of the snapshot currently in use?
@derobert ok

so when that hits 100% bad things (as in "writes fail") happen

@derobert well, let's hope I can control my urge to watch daytime soaps.

4:50 PM
Apparently someone watched those long shows, gets a long enough Wikipedia article... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guiding_Light

@derobert Cancelled after 57 years. Wonder what it took to make them pull the plug.

No one watching. That's the only thing that can kill a TV show that old.

@derobert I guess. Or someone just got impatient. Ever watched a show called Early Edition?

@FaheemMitha I've seen a few of those. A while ago, when it was originally airing.

@derobert Of Early Edition? Good show. Ran for 4 years.
Had its ups and downs.
Very authentic location work. I lived in Chicago for a bit. Left around the time that show started.

5:01 PM
@FaheemMitha Yeah. I guess that was back in the 90s. So been a while.
Probably now lives on Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu.

1996-2000 were the broadcast dates.
You can also get it on DVD. Though only the first two seasons I think.

7:01 PM
@cuonglm Some people are just jerks all of the time???

3 hours later…
9:33 PM
Hey everyone, what's up? Just wanted to let you all know that AWS is hiring for cloud support engineer positions in Dallas. If anyone interested, hit me up. I will let you know the details :)

10:21 PM
Hey all, is anyone around please? I'm stuggling with CoreOS password hashing, or have been for a couple days now. Must be making a schoolboy error.

10:32 PM
Hi @Ramesh. How are things? Long time no see.
@RussTaylor Ask a question on the site.
Is it just me, or are Kali users even less clueful than the average?

10:48 PM
@FaheemMitha no, it not just you

11:10 PM
@FaheemMitha things are going good. How about you? Yeah, am not able to actively participate as before. I am following the questions on the site though :)

@Ramesh I'm doing Ok. So, they are keeping you busy? :-)
And how is Amazon treating you? Interesting work?
