You can modify the Vector3 and thus modify position, normally you would make a defensive copy, but for performance reasons it's better to not do it in this case, how would you approach it?

If getPosition() is not called frequently, then it might be worth it to make a defensive copy.

@skiwi It's all situation dependent I'd say. Sometimes public fields are bad, sometimes they're not that bad.
However, making them public fields makes it look more like they're meant to be modified from the outside.

If you don't want users to change the position vector they get from the getPosition() vector, then give them no reason to do so. Make sure the class has all the functionality it needs to have to adjust its position in other ways.

Some coders are evil and will change the vector directly, but then they will be the ones getting the headache and wondering why things don't work ;)
Also, document the method. Use javadoc to make it clear that no defensive copy is made.

You are converting an O(1) memory algorithm in to a larger O(1) memory algorithm, in order to save log-n performance.
log n performance for anything after about 128 input values, is essentially O(1).
 
Fair nuff, I didn't say his algorithm is bad. I just thought it could be optimized for large inputs.

1 to 2 will double
2 to 8 will double.
8 - 64 will doube.
64 to 4096 will double

well, yeah, so, the question is, is the cost of setting up (and destroying) two arrays of 128 ints cheaper than an extra logn of work?
There will be a cross-over point at some input scale... I don't know where that point is, but, for smaller scale inputs, the current solution will be faster ;-)

This is actually a pretty nice trick for development environments, but unfortunately I am not going to be allowed to deploy code comments inside SQL to my production server.
