4:05 PM
It's FRIDAY!!!!!!!

Oh boy, here it comes...... ^^^

And tomorrow is Saturday, with more of the same problems.
Sometimes I wish I had a job - at least that way, I could leave it behind me on the weekends (sometimes).

And here I am, thinking.... Sometimes I wish I was a student, and could goof around all day every day .... ;-)

@rolfl There isn't much goofing around when you are trying to maintain your almost 4.0 average.

So that's what I did wrong :(

4:09 PM
I have 15 A's and 1 A-.

What, no A+?

There isn't an A+.
An A is a 4.0

@Donald.McLean my man!

Got added on facebook by another volunteer that goes to Argentina when I go.
Always fun to be spending a few weeks with Italian models

Alpha Romeo?
Ferrari?

4:17 PM
No, Don Juan.

Ferrarrrrrrrrri

Of course, he won't enjoy the end (I never knew a Don Juan who did, anyway).
Romeo died for his lady love.

Hey, I answered a C# question :D

Don Juan died because he loved the ladies.

Meh, you go "volunteer", the rest of us will fill in no problem.

4:19 PM
When I leave, that means there will be one less answer every 4 weeks

Not suggesting Jeroen will do either, just closer to Don Juan because he has/has had more than one.

I'm not sure if CR can handle the extra workload

"The program works I am simply looking for ways to make it quicker." Well, you should be more lucky on codereview.stackexchange.comNizil 10 secs ago

@Duga Hey, isn't that an actual valid reason to move something to CR? :o
First time I actually see one.

^^^ it happens

4:24 PM
I just fired a CFO.

Did they deserve to be fired?

At least, I did in my weekly accounting discussion.
They were suggesting the company record new raw inventory as a used-up supply.
The company didn't save enough money to pay their taxes, so he was trying to reduce the tax amount due.

So, I take my home network quite seriously......
gigabit cable through the house, 24-port switch, firewall, etc.
Occasionally the internet drops out.... like, for 1 or 2 seconds every day.
I am in the process of upgrading the OS on my main server.... anxious times....

Murphy's law.

I just discovered that I have the ADSL modelm plugged in to the surge-protect, and not the battery-backup side of the UPS.
That could explain so many things........

4:29 PM
@rolfl Shouldn't the computer be able to handle a second or two?

The computer does.
the network switch does...
even the monitor does....
but the ADSL modem.... not if it does not have power.

Oh, the power dies.

I should have about 45 minutes of power......

45 minutes of uptime.

Canada has regular 'flickering' on the power.
@Unihedro - I have just rebooted the server, after 181 days of uptime.

4:48 PM
this.hasPermission = (permissionName: string, param?: string) => {
            if (!_.isString(permissionName))

For sure, this is one approach. But I think it should be possible to handle this in your build system. And that's often preferable. For example, if you do, you can document these tasks in your build.gradle in version control, do code review on them, etc. All of which is impossible if it's embedded in CI configs. — jlevy 18 secs ago

Are those song_hash["..."].split('').count lines just for getting the length of the strings in question? Using song_hash["..."].length seems easier to me. Why not use the printf method for the other two lines also? Just use "" as the fields, no? 9:07 PM
@rolfl I'm reading a science fiction novel set in the far future. Software people there are called "code monkeys". So apparently you're way ahead of your time.

That's what I said tomorrow... yeah.
BTW, I will be very disappointed if, in "the far future", we are still coding programs....
maybe that's the point....
people who still code are "monkeys",
real programmers just think things in to existence.

The author is very hand-wavy with much of the tech stuff, unlike David Weber who has large sections of highly explicit tech-porn throughout his books.

Or..... the oddest one I have seen recently, "Girl with the dragon tattoo" - where apple-check is prominent.
Stieg Larsson?

Could be. I don't read mundane fiction.

Yeah, in those books, there's not just references to apple tech of various sorts, but it is qualified too....
She didn't just have a "Mac", but, a 39cm Mac Air.
or a 32GB iPod ....
(wink wink @nhgrif - the books are a good read even without the Mac references...)
(and, apparently, the books are a better read now that the author is dead).
> Larsson died on 9 November 2004 in Stockholm at the age of 50 of a heart attack after climbing seven flights of stairs to his office because the lift was not working
Swedes..... here in Canada we die shovelling our driveways, because the kids aren't working.

9:17 PM
I'm as much a fan of Apple as the next guy (I've purchased 20 different Apple devices over the years), but there's no need for that level of detail in a book.

@rolfl Swedeeeeeeeen! :)

I'm sorry - 25 Apple devices. I forgot to count the iPads.

^^^ I think you're more of a fan than the next guy....
I have .... none.
My wife has an iPad and iPhone.
I do have an iTunes account, I think.

No, I've just been a fan much longer than most. I used my first Apple device in 1978 and my own first purchase was 1985 - 30 years.

I guess these things add up over time.

9:22 PM
I opened my iTunes account shortly after the iTunes software became available on Windows (that being our family computer at the time). It was the first online music service that had terms-of-service that weren't stupid and/or evil.

Ohhh... those are fighting words.
the iTunes ToS/EULA has never been smart, or not-evil.
Like, I want to buy a song, so I do, but then I can't play it on my device.....

Ok, it was one of the first services that had terms that I could live with. The original Apple music DRM was always easy to get around.

Not "legitimately"....
the ToS did (and probably still does) prohibit it.
But, FWIW, I gave up on iTunes not because of the ToS, but because it was unusable in my environment.

Very confused right now

No

sampleBlock->snippet = malloc(sampleBlock->size);

In general, no. But, the most likely cause of an out of memory situation is improper use of UIImage which results in too many images being held in memory at the same time. Another very likely cause is ref count loops in ViewControllers that ref other view controllers in a way that cause a loop. Trouble is, these problems often only show up in your product after it is released and it is running on end user devices. Only a very careful development process and code reviews can prevent this kind of issue. — MoDJ 1 min ago

My dad's in hospital.... Malaria... but he's on the other side of the world, and, is recovering now .... ;-)

Actually, I've heard that malaria is curable now.

I hope he's entirely recovered by now?

11:16 PM
He's mostly better now, still says it affects him... and he's still putting on lost weight

Before, it would just kind of go into remission, and it would come back periodically.

He'll never know if he's fully cured...

Hope he doesn't get it again. Nasty thing to have.

he may, at any point get sick again.... but, there's a good chance he may not

Meh, that was months ago, and he's mostly better.
It was a tough one at the time, though

I can imagine
He went on a trip to africa/asia? Or can you get malaria in the us too?
Since I believe if you go to africa you take those malaria pills as precaution, not?
just curious

Rolfl is originally from South Africa.
Presumably, his father still lives there.
@rolfl I didn't know @JeroenVannevel was vegetarian.
(For those of you who don't get the reference, I refer you to: americanliterature.com/author/beatrix-potter/short-story/…)

@DJanssens - yeah, I am from South Africa, my folks still live there (but that may change). Malaria is seasonal - a summer thing. My folks travelled to a high-risk area in winter though (august - late winter), and did not take the anti-malarials (as recommended for people who frequent malaria areas regularly, like my parents do).
Apparently this global warming thing is changing the seasonal nature of malaria now too.
Regardless, my parents go to the Kruger National Park regularly, every couple of months or so. They have probably been.... thousands? of times.
I have been a hundred or so times
hmmm, more than 50.
If you live there, you don't take the drugs... it masks the symptoms if/when you get it.

11:43 PM
wow, so it's really just bad luck?
correct me if I'm wrong but you now live in Canada, right?

For him, yes....
yes, I live in ontario now.
I left SA in.... 1998... and have been back to SA about 10 times since then. Each time visiting the KNP (malaria area).
before that, I used to go to the KNP every holiday - sometimes more... about 4 or 5 times a year.
We had friends and later other things which gave us cheap accomodation there.

I've heard that the KNP is one of the most beautiful places on earth :)
