@JourneymanGeek About to go, but how do you find this much spam? Mod tools?

3:53 AM
Just caught a spammer ring.
DownloadAVideo.net and Screenshot.net
APowerSoft.com is related to this.
Five users caught.
More.
apowersoft.com, screenshot.net, downloadavideo.net. 33 flags, 8 users, three major domains. BUSTED.
The longest spam flagging spree I've ever gone on.
Gotta go, ping me with any feedback.

@DragonLord: 'new answers' 'late answers'

4:08 AM
I happened to find this in the 10k new answers to old questions queue.
One errant post uncovered a massive spammer ring.
Must have been scary to see 33 flags in the mod queue.

I haven't looked yet XD, at work ;p

You could just flag one post per spam account, and then add a follow up flag to "check out their other answers", though the mods usually do that anyway. No need to spam flag each and every one of them. Certainly don't need to bump those spam answers that would have been silently wiped

A while back, nhinkle was freaked out seeing 20 spam flags a while back:
in Ask a Super User Moderator, Jan 7 at 2:29, by nhinkle
Good lord, that was an assload of spam flags.

@JourneymanGeek I mean, you could compromise an RNG by returning predictable data (though if it's too predictable it's easy to detect).
But compromising the execution of arbitrary code?
... ... ... you can brick it
that's about it
You can't make arbitrary code actually do what you want.

@Bob: The two possible compromises he mentioned had nothing to do with microcode ;p

Bob
Because there's literally no way for a CPU to look at the big picture.
Not unless it solves the halting problem.
@JourneymanGeek That too.
It's complex enough to get it working, let alone optimal... add subtle backdoors that don't break it? If you can do that, hell, why even bother fighting against it?

@HackToHell ^^
@Bob: precisely.

11:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek Windows 8 already runs on the Edison
Hopefully I'll get 10 too :D

@HackToHell how stripped down is windows on Edison?

@JourneymanGeek Very
It's for the Galileo not the Edison
And the galileo is way slower than the Edison
It took quite some time to boot

Ahh. Damn it. I corrected myself elsewhere :p

I'm looking at getting a 4K monitor in a few months
any idea how I'd work out how powerful a GPU I'd need to power such a beast? ;p
I might stick to gaming on my old monitor temporarily (I doubt my 660 could handle smooth 4K gaming), but could something like a 970 or (@allquixotic ! a R280) do?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.O

@JourneymanGeek I don't think you have to run the games at the native resolution of the display ;)

2:10 PM
@Bob: they've gotten up to 60 hz. I can actually afford to blow 800 quid on a monitor that would actually last me a few years (and I'll likely pay less than that)
@OliverSalzburg: What's the point then? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Well, there's more to computing than gaming

@OliverSalzburg: True, but my current card could probably handle regular 4K
Hell, I think a IB/SB onboard GPU might

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I've personally never really been a fan of excessively high pixel densities :P
If I have to lean in to see individual pixels, then the density is high enough for me.

Heck, my home monitor isn't even IPS.

I've wanted a better monitor for ages, work has SERIOUSLY sweet stuff if you're a artist, and I have slight monitor envy

Oh, found it.

@JourneymanGeek ^ That is so exaggerated.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Probably?
No way is the one on the right merely twice the res (assuming same zoom level) as the left one -_-
It's approx 5 times :P

@Bob: I'm not going by that ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Now I wonder how that's different to the UP2414Q, which is over $900.

Is it for SEO, or is it to escape reviewers?

This is what I almost always see with spam.

(which is funny, work uses ultrasharp and dosen't caliberate them. We use another super pricy brand called eizo for colour critical work)
@DragonLord: the idea being to hide the fact that its spam ;p

@JourneymanGeek They claim to be the same in that regard.

@JourneymanGeek UP2414Q is 700 USD.

4:34 PM
Hi, all.
I am running Windows 7 x64 on HDD with 20GB RAM. Would it help anything to add a small SDD to put my pagefile on?
My machine has an i5-2500, and I'm looking for a performance boost.
System Explorer says the swap is at 34%

20GB of RAM is a lot, so I wouldn't suggest it. If you want to boost performance, try using that SSD for Intel Smart Response Technology instead.
The SSD will act as a large cache, accelerating most I/O operations and producing a tangible increase in performance.
Note that your motherboard needs to be in RAID mode to do this, and you must enable the RAID driver for this to work.
Jan 17 at 1:06, by DragonLord
To enable the RAID driver, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorA, set Start to 0x3 to disable the Intel RST AHCI driver; in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorAV, delete the StartOverride key to enable the Intel RST Matrix RAID driver.
Do this immediately before you reboot to BIOS/UEFI settings to change the mode, or you'll get BSODs.
(If you meant 2 GB, you definitely need to add more RAM. In that case, I would upgrade to at least 8 GB of memory.)

BGM
No, I meant 20GB.
I've never heard of Intel Smart Response Technology.
Can I do that to my system that I'm already using?

Are you using Intel Rapid Storage Technology?

BGM
You mean RAID?
No.

If your system supports Intel motherboard RAID, you can do this.

BGM
4:48 PM
I have two internal HDDs with partitions in each. But they are not RAIDed together.

Enabling RAID mode does not mean you have to create RAID volumes, even though it enables this functionality.

BGM
My motherboard is an Asus P8Z77-V LX

Also, make sure you're using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver, or it won't work.

BGM
DragonLord is that something I have to check in BIOS or can I check from within Windows?

Chances are, you're using the stock MSAHCI driver

BGM
4:54 PM
Well, I have a control panel for it...

I'd suggest updating to version 12.9—I've had too much trouble with 13.2.

BGM
Apparently I have version 13.1.0.1058

I'd keep that if you haven't had any trouble.
As a reminder, be sure to change storage drivers immediately before you go to the BIOS/UEFI settings to change the SATA mode.
Jan 17 at 1:06, by DragonLord

BGM
I was just reading where you said that above...

@BGM Does your Intel RST control panel provide options for creating RAID volumes? If so, this is not necessary and you are free to install an SSD and enable Smart Response Technology.
If not, you need to enable RAID mode as above.

BGM
4:58 PM
Well, I just ordered a 128GB SSD from ebay so I can try this out.
I'm looking. I've never done anything with IRST before
I have an option to create a volume
I see this under "optimizing the storage system":
■ Intel® Smart Response Technology
■ Accelerate the storage system: Configure solid-state drive to be used as a non-volatile intelligent caching for a disk or volume present in the storage system.
■ DC cache policies: Configure the DC cache policy to reduce power consumption and increase longevity of the disk.

> Accelerate the storage system: Configure solid-state drive to be used as a non-volatile intelligent caching for a disk or volume present in the storage system.
This is precisely what you want.

BGM
yes

Maximum is 64 GB.
Any extra space will be unused.

BGM
The SSD is only 128GB anyway; I only gave $35 for it.
Have you ever done this before?

When you're setting it up, be sure to have it accelerate the system drive.

BGM
5:02 PM
Right.

I've never done this, I migrated my whole system to an SSD a while back
I have experimented with switching from AHCI to RAID mode and back, though.

BGM
on a live system?

Yes, my main laptop no less.
I have backups, though.

BGM
My workstation is like the master of the whole network. I manage everything from here.

Didn't lose data, just took some trial and error

BGM
5:05 PM
Okay, so when the SSD arrives, I'm going to attach it inside my computer.
Then I'll enable IRST in BIOS/UEFI?

It's already set up.

BGM
Then I'll configure it in IRST in Windows.

You're already in RAID mode.

BGM
oh - good. Actually, I though I remembered it saying I was in RAID mode.
even though I haven't configured any RAID manually.

If you have options to create a RAID volume in the IRST control panel, you are in RAID mode.

BGM
5:06 PM
I suppose it thinks its RAIDing a single HDD.
So if I do this, it will limit my pagefile to 64GB.

Never mind
I'd suggest using the remaining space on the SSD for the pagefile

BGM
Sorry - I forgot that IRST was different than pagefile.

That will free up the cache for data files and should give you optimal performance.

BGM
So I'll make the IRST cache use half the SSD and the other half for pagefile.

I assume you're running virtual machines?

BGM
5:11 PM
yes
And photoshop
and VS
and InDesign
all at the same time

@BGM I'd use the maximum 64GB for IRST and the rest for pagefile.

BGM
I have three monitors and my eyes are cockeyed....
SSD for IRST and pagefile - sounds like fun.

128GB is shown as less on the computer because of the binary/decimal difference.

BGM
Okay, now what do I use for the min/max for the pagefile?
system explorer says swap usage is 37%

On the hard drive: The smallest that would allow Windows to save crash dumps for both minimum and maximum.
On the SSD: 4 GB minimum, fill the volume (probably around 50 GB) for maximum.

BGM
5:14 PM
Currently my pagefile size is set to 25MB; 8520 is in use
and its on C:\pagefile.sys

8520MB out of 25GB.

BGM
37%

128 GB is about 119 GiB (the value shown on the computer).

BGM
Right - I expect Windows to steal some.

Use 64 GB for the SRT cache, 55 GB for the pagefile.

BGM
5:17 PM
okay! This is going to be great! What kind of improvement should I expect?

Create a 64 GB SRT caching volume in the Intel RST control panel first. Then create a partition using the remaining space and set up the pagefile on it.
What kind of SSD is this?

BGM
hold on...

I'm concerned about wearing it out too quickly, so you might want to monitor it using the appropriate tools.

BGM
samsung PM810

That's a good choice.

BGM
5:18 PM
it's used, though
But this is an expiriment anyway - just $37.

It's relatively old and cannot function at SATA 6 Gb/s speeds.
I'd get an SSD 850 PRO instead. Pricy, but far more durable.

BGM
pricy is the catch.
So, can I use that SSD?
that I bought?
for this?

Is $120 okay?
Yes, but keep an eye on the condition of the disk.

BGM
ah; it's a bit much for an experiment.
if the experiment works out, I'll get a better drive.

Samsung Magician won't work because this is an OEM model (equivalent to the Samsung SSD 470)

BGM
5:21 PM
I have Crystal already installed.

Do note that you can edit your chat messages for two minutes after you send them here.

BGM
ah right - I've been in IRC recently.

Yeah, IRC doesn't support that.

BGM
So I would monitor the disk with Crystal. What do I look for?

Have CrystalDiskInfo in the background, it'll alert you if there's a problem
Watch the Health Status readout.
I suspect this was a scrap part from some old computer, erased and resold.

BGM
5:25 PM
yes, I think so.

There's probably a lot of life left on it, but you should monitor the disk especially for heavy workloads of this sort.

BGM
Thanks for all your help.

You don't need to keep the CDI window open all the time, but you might want to check the Total Host Writes field periodically (if provided) to see how much writing the drive is getting.

BGM
If its using IRST AND pagefile, it should get a bunch, no?

Yeah
3000 P/E cycles is what this drive is specced for, so I'm not sure if this drive will last very long under the kind of workload you're putting it under

BGM
5:28 PM
If the drive was new, what kind of life expectancy would there be for it?
oh you just said 3000 cycles

The SSD 850 PRO is good for at least twice that (SMART data says 6,000 cycles), and likely more
(3D V-NAND is said to be good for 35,000 cycles)

BGM
I'm completely new to SSDs, so this is helpful to consider.

You might want to replace the drive once it starts reallocating sectors (although unlike hard drives, sector reallocation does not indicate imminent failure as SSDs are designed to do this to extend usable life)
My laptop uses a 512 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO and it has about 6.6 TB of writes on it

BGM
wow
I think

It's warranted for 10 years or 150 TB, but I'm certain it'll handle 600+ TB of writes

BGM
5:35 PM
You said the SSD I bought would not work with SATA 6 speeds...

3,000 P/E cycles on a 128GB drive is about 375 TB of writes, but I would consider it good for about 150 TB (or even 100 TB) of writes before I'd consider replacing it
I'd leave some wiggle room as the older technology means more write amplification and less effective wear leveling

BGM
What kind of boost should I expect?

@BGM It's an older model that does not support SATA 6 Gb/s. You're going to be limited to SATA 3 Gb/s, which will limit sequential I/O performance, but random I/O is still going to be very fast.
You should still get a substantial performance gain, but not as much as with a more modern SSD.

BGM
So, when I go to swap it for a newer one, I would move my pagefile back to C: and disable the IRST?

Yes, then remove the old SSD, install the new one, and set it up as before.

BGM
5:44 PM
Great! This is fun.

You meant disable Intel SRT.
But I suppose you'll get some substantial performance gains.

BGM
ISRT - yes
or, not disable it - just remove it from the SSD allocation.

Intel Smart Response Technology will monitor the data you access often and cache it. You can adjust how aggressively it caches new data to optimize for performance or longevity.

BGM
It would probably even help if I enabled it on a section of my HDD?

Not sure about that

BGM
5:55 PM
I have a 10GB partition that I created as FAT.

It would only accelerate that part.
I'd probably apply it to the whole disk if possible. I'm not really familiar with this.

BGM
I mean to use that disk for ISRT

You need at least 18.6 GB. It'll be dedicated space—the SRT partition is specially formatted and does not use FAT.

BGM
ah. I don't see an option for accelerating using HDD anyway

The whole point is that SSDs are much faster than HDDs.

BGM
6:03 PM
right; I get that part
okay - I have another problem I was hoping someone would know about. :)
For some reason when we play youtube videos in firefox we have to move our mouses around to keep the video from stalling. Ever heard of that?
It happens on several different computers

6:15 PM
Not sure what might be going on here, sorry.

7:02 PM
I'm worried. Windows Update has been trying to finish this Windows Live Essentials update (already had the main screen) for the last 4 hours.
Is that normal?

No idea how long windows essentials can take, but for normal windows updates: Yes.
That can easily take a day if you need a lot of updates on an older computer.

@Hennes there aren't that many updates, actually. I mean, it is a factory reset (old laptop I'm reconfiguring for my mother), but it only had 5 updates waiting. WLE was the last one and it's been hanging on that for the past 4 hours now, and 30 minutes on an attempt at canceling the install since it's finished

7:17 PM
In that case it is sadly not unusual.

so I should just let it continue?

When that happens I mostly leave it for the night, and if it has not failed/timedour by morning I just reboot.
Might not be a neat solution, but I have long since accepted that as the windows way.

just sounds silly. anyway, slightly related question: it's a laptop from 2010, so 5 years old with Windows 7. is it worth installing the free Windows 10 update once it releases? the user is quite computer illiterate

uhm, it depends on the user.
My mother is barely computer literate. She started on XP and her current windows 7 install (on a laptop from 2005) mimics the XP/98 setup.
I would not install windows 10 for her because it looks *different*

8:10 PM
This seems like a dumb question... but I'm trying to use a Dragon Dictation app on an Ipad
and I want to take audio coming out of my laptop and put it into the Dragon app
can I do that with a 3.5mm cable between device headphone jacks? does the iPad allow me to do that?

8:28 PM
I don't think the iPad supports that. You'll need to hook up a mike or connect the 3.5mm line into an audio interface attached through the Thunderbolt connector, possibly through an adapter.
...er, Lightning
