Q: handle drag and drop operations

WerlangI've come up with the following code to handle drag and drop operation. It's composed of a constructor function that returns an objects with methods to attach to event handlers. Notes about this solution: It's client responsibility to attach methods to event handlers; specific CSS classes shou...

Q: Calculating the checksum digit with the Luhn-algorithm

André SamuelssonI'm doing some exercises in Python and this one is about using the Luhn-algorithm to calculate the checksum digit in Swedish personal identification numbers. The description is the same as this question: Given a string of 9 digits, abcdefghi compute: array = [a*2, b, c*2, d, e*2, f, g*2, h,...

@Hosch250 If you find anything here or here worth upvoting, I'd like to get to 1k
And thanks for that tip, I'll keep it in mind.
Anyone here familiar with JUnit? I have a few questions.

@Legato yup, what do you need to know?

Done.
And gone.
I favorited one of your questions for a mass upvote tomorrow.

10:15 PM
Gratitude @Hosch250 I'll pay it forward.

Would you think Pythagoras, Aquinas, or Augustine would be easiest to write about?

@Legato when using JUnit, I'd recommend using Maven or Gradle as a build system. Putting stuff in your build path is tedious work.

That's what I thought*

@Hosch250 Who's Aquinas? Is it Thomas of Aquinas?

Looking up both of those right now.

10:17 PM
Yes, St. Thomas Aquinas.
Augustine of Hippo.
and Pythagoras the mathematician.
A philosophy paper.

Quite interesting mix there... two Church-people and Pythagoras?

Yeah, what is this for?

(or do I remember St. Thomas and Augustine incorrectly?)

No, they are catholic saints.

Pythagoras too?

10:19 PM
Those are the people I know the most about in the list.

I think Augustine might be my choice.

I've heard of Kant, Muhammad, Rousseau, and a couple others, but I know the most about these.

@Hosch250 whoa, really mixing all the time periods here, huh?

Yeah.

Muhammad as in the Islamic Prophet?

10:20 PM
Here is the full list:
Pythagoras			Kant
Heraclitus			Hegel
Protagoras			Schleiermacher
Zeno (of Elea) Zeno (of Citium)
Epictetus			Hume
Augustine       		Kierkegaard
Muhammad			Sartre
Aquinas		         	Nietzche
Confucius    			Rousseau

no Descartes? disappointed

I believe so.
Yeah, I've heard of Descartes too.

I'd go with Pythagoras or Augustine, of those three options you gave.

I was thinking Pythagoras, but I'll need to do a bit of basic research before I finalize my decision.

of all the 18 options, I'd go with Muhammad, Hume, Sartre, Pythagoras, or Augustine.

10:23 PM
His famous theory might kind of block the more important philosophy resources I would need.

It might be hard to find info on Pythagoras, as he lived the most long ago of those options (I believe)

It's funny since I was going to say, from the three you mentioned, Aquinas, since I had no previous familiarity with him unlike the two, and according to what I've read you would have a lot of material to base your research on. Apparently big guy in Theology, had a school of philosophy founded after him.

Yeah, Aquinas is still in the game.

never heard of the Zeno's btw, or Epictetus or Heraclitus. Or Schleiermacher (although he sounds German)

I just heard of Heraclitus in class.

10:25 PM
@Legato yup, Aquinas is likely to be a good option as well

If your code works, post it to codereview.stackexchange.com and have it reviewed there. — Alex K 2 mins ago

@Duga YOU WORK!

Yeah, @Duga!!

@SimonAndréForsberg It's supposed to trigger codereview mentions on SO? :)

Go, @Duga!!
Augustine. 354-430 (AD) Roman Christian Church Father influenced by Plato
Mohammed 571-632 Founder of Islam (622- year one for Muslims)
Aquinas, Thomas 1225-1274 Roman Christian Church Father influence by Aristotle
Was trying to post some of the information about these guys, but wasn't working good.

Make sure that you provide sufficient explanation of what the code does when you post it to code review. Just be sure that Code Review is not for understanding why it takes 24 seconds with Gevents. I'd recommend just going with the threading solution, as you know that is faster. (Although I personally have never heard of Gevents) — Simon André Forsberg 1 min ago

Heraclitus 470 “ “Can’t step in same river twice”

@SimonAndréForsberg since I'm not familiar with either, which do you recommend Maven or Gradle?

@Legato I know I'm not @Simon, but...

@skiwi yup, it checks for comments containing Code Review once every 3-5 minutes.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated @skiwi

10:30 PM
I'd advice Gradle as it's really better than Maven in my opinion, but you will need good IDE support with any build system, and so far it seems that only IntelliJ IDEA can live with Gradle somewhat

@Legato it seems like there's a trend of Maven users migrating to Gradle these days. I'd recommend going with Gradle if you don't know neither.
I agree with @skiwi there, IntelliJ + Gradle is a good combination. If you're using Netbeans or Eclipse, either switch or use Maven.

You guys rock. Thanks a lot.

@Hosch250 that sounds like an interesting quote...

@Legato - ....

now @rolfl will say that Maven sucks and that you should use Ant.

10:32 PM
I'm going to be the dissenter here... that ^^^ but let me explain
If you are learning Java, you should actually learn how Java compiles and builds a jar file.
I see too many 'new people' who know how to code, and then, as soon as things go iffy with the build, they have no idea of how to proceed.
So, you should learn javac from the commandline...
then, step it up to ant, which allows you some close-to-the-compiler automation.

@rolfl that is true, although I don't think you need to learn that deep about how Java works behind the screens IMO.

if you need to take it further, then go the fully automatic route.
Meh, I think people should know how to put windshield-washer fluid in their car, and check their tire pressure.

What's most important is to learn how to learn, so that you can deal with the problems as they come. Because trust me, no matter how much you know, there's always things that can go wrong.

I think - when learning Java - it is in first step more important to know the language and the standard libraries than to know how to build it at all

@rolfl yes, but they don't need to know how the engine works in order to drive the car.

10:36 PM
That's the thing, are you going to be a passenger in the car, or the driver?

although knowing how to use javac from commandline is definitely also a plus

Maven is taking public transit, and letting the bus drop you where you need to be, but the route you take is pre-determined and runs on a schedule.

@rolfl the driver. I have a driving license and I have not much of an idea how car engines work under the hood.

javac is walking there.
ant is having your own car.

I love these analogies.
Not sure I agree with them completely, but I love them.

10:38 PM
Thanks, I am pleased with them

Incoming question.
I'm faster than the Captain today.

@Hosch250 - you are the captain today

@rolfl And in Maven you are going to be in a very crowded bus/tram/train, while with Gradle there won't be that many annoying people around you ;-)

@Hosch250 s/today/every day/ - doesn't take that much.

Apparently, Aquinas was heavily inspired by Augustine.
Aquinas was more Aristotelian, while Augustine was more of a Platonist.
I like Aristotle better.

10:41 PM
@Hosch250 Does that mean you will also like Aquinas better?

No.

s/No./Not necessarily./

No, I will judge them on their own merits.
I don't agree with either of their beliefs on several things.

Heh @rolfl, your car to software anologies will be getting real!

it's hard to agree with anything 100%

I wonder how much battery it will take to download/install the software - especially over a slow connection?
Hopefully it will be plugged in.

Q: Disjoint-set Data Structure in python3

AttilioInspired by this question, I decided to implement a Disjoint-set data structure in Python 3. I mainly followed this description for understanding the algorithm (but did not do the optimizations for path compression, union by rank etc. -- so mine is a "naive" implementation). Here is the Wikipedia...

Monking!

@Duga We already knew you were here.

@Hosch250 just restarted!

10:49 PM
Oh.

@Duga Why didn't you say bye? :(

I was running the comment detection only on my development environment, now it is live on the real @Duga.

Does/Should it also run on meta.SO?

@skiwi Because the Tomcat server is killed in a hard way, I guess. Or because something is wrong with the way @Duga shuts down.
@skiwi We already scan the questions for tag. I think that's enough.
for now at least.

@SimonAndréForsberg Who is we?

10:51 PM
When you used the debugger, and executed each line one at a time (and looked at the variables' contents), which line is giving the issue? BTW, using a debugger is a lot faster than asking for a code review from StackOverflowThomas Matthews 2 mins ago

Ah ok, makes sense

@Duga what does that have to do with anything?
oh, than asking for a code review from StackOverflow

Hah, false positive
I'm wondering... would it be needed to make it a bit more obvious that it got triggered because of it mentioning code review?
Right now @Duga just randomly says something, it seems
You are using autoboxing for the comment link there though... so anything would consist of two lines, which is somewhat ugly

right now, @Duga just posts the link to the comment. I was considering adding "YOU ARE BEING WATCHED!" or something right before the comment, but that seems unnecessary.
@skiwi yes, I do like the auto-boxing.
it annoys me a bit that the comment mentioned "asking for a code review", because it seems like we have a bit of differing opinion about what that means...

10:57 PM
Yeah... oh well, let's hope @Duga doesn't make a big fuzz tomorrow before you're awake ;-)

I doubt it :)
I think it's under control.

R.E.D. Great movie, which I am about to go watch... bbl

if you haven't watched it, how do you know it's great?

Q: Populate ItemList

Hosch250In my app, I have an ObservableCollection of MenuItems: public ObservableCollection<MenuItem> ItemList { get; set; } When an item in it is selected (either programatically or by the user), this method is run: public void SelectionChangedWS() { if (!NavButtonUsed) { Back.Insert(0, Curren...

11:09 PM
hmm, only one more question for me I think until I get that silver badge.
Then just 70 more questions and I get the golden one

I have all but one of the bronze question badges.
I don't particularly want that one.
I have all the bronze answer badges.

@Hosch250 Tumbleweed?

Yup.

This question is better suited for codereview.stackexchange.com, you'd be better off posting there — Suseika 1 min ago

Oops, wrong.
It could be turning into an on-topic question, though, and we would report any bugs found.

11:17 PM
@Suseika is wrong. Speaking as a Code Review regular, explain code is off-topic for Code Review. That being said, once you do understand your code, I think you will find Code Review helpful. — Simon André Forsberg 1 min ago

@Hosch250 it seems to be explaining someone else's code. That's not on-topic.
@Duga Damn you just got a lot more useful!

Yup.
Kind of missed that.
I agree - the OP must have written the code on CR for multiple reasons. — Hosch250 13 secs ago

@rolfl You'll be pleased to know that so far I've only programming using the command line. I use a text editor, no IDE. I just get a lot of recommendations here to use JUnit, so I was interested in how I should go about using it (I've never used an external resource).

@Legato wow, you don't even use an IDE? Then I think you should consider starting using one.

I used NetBeans.

11:23 PM
I agree - the OP must have written the code on CR for multiple reasons. — Hosch250 1 min ago

I would try Eclipse before I put NetBeans in again.

@Hosch250 isn't that the wrong link?

Fixed.
I keep making mistakes.
Better stop doing so many things at once.

@Hosch250 yes, I'd recommend Eclipse more than I'd recommend using NetBeans.

I have IntelliJ on an external hard drive but have never used it. So far all of my programming has been done just using Sublime Text. I thought it would be helpful to try and figure things out that way, instead of relying on the IDE (I dunno, it's something my first programming professor said students tend to do).

11:25 PM
I've used an IDE based on Eclipse that I liked.
It was not for code, but for gates and wires and that kind of stuff - logic.
Hi, @HenrikBohlin

HOOOOOO!

Another question with a Best Of title in the works?

@Legato that is true.

not at the moment trying to learn how to use javaFX

@rolfl so, then I should just put the jar file in my java path?

11:28 PM
@Hosch250 oh? What's that IDE? Sounds interesting for me.

Something from Qualtrics.
Altera, or something.

@HenrikBohlin How's that going? I've been meaning to do that myself. I spent last summer learning Swing to find out it was deprecated, haha.

@Legato you can use a command line option for javac to specify your "build path", which jar files you depend on and such.

Oh! That makes sense, then I could just add import statements in my files and they'd work?

11:31 PM
@Hosch250 please specify that "or something" a bit more if you are able to. "Altera" finds nothing that looks relevant.
@Legato should be possible, yes.

I gave the link.

@Legato its going ok. Ritght now im trying to figur out how to create a component dynamically

@Hosch250 oh, I am blind

Oh dear, that's too bad.

11:32 PM
Gratitude, @SimonAndréForsberg.
@HenrikBohlin What resource are you using to learn?

will soon be able to help simon andre with some of hiss stuff :)

Gratitude, @SimonAndréForsberg.
@HenrikBohlin What resource are you using to learn?

simon and google :P
coding in intellij

@Hosch250 are you able to "run" things in that?

Sort of.
You need either ModelSim or a hardware device thing.
My U had us get a device thing, and we connected our computers to it and compiled the stuff in there, then loaded it on the device to test it.

11:38 PM
hmm... sounds more complicated than I expected..

Thanks, unknown voter.
You just gave me another Nice Question badge.

Should be 2. :P

Yup.
Thanks.
One more and I bump Kleinfreund.
