Q: How to Recover Lost Files

lindanmRecently I deleted all my files on my cell phone by mistake. There are many important photos on it. I want to recover them back. When searching on the Internet and find a web page which introduces WiseRecovery(http://www.wiserecovery.com/articles/How-to-Retrieve-Lost-SD-Card-Files-in-an-Easy-Way ...

First to flag.

Someone approved a stupid edit
can a Mod rollback to revision 1?

11:26 AM
@Vader last edit was by the op, so no

Well 7 mintues ago it wasn't by OP

also, no one approved that edit
ya. I was playing one of the oddest games ever

12:24 PM
mutters "stupid stupid stupid"
Do not cut peppers without gloves.
I assumed these would be mild since they grew during the winter and lacked sunlight. They were not.

._.
We do this all the time.

My finger tops (which I used to tear out the seeds, which I will dry and replant) hurt.

Either our 'normal' chillis are much milder or....

12:40 PM
Just brewed a nice rich cup of pour-over coffee
We're just repurposing our percolator to do pour-over rather than percolating
I think this is the best cup I've gotten out of the Martinson ground coffee we currently use

A: How does BIOS display a character? (Trying to repair a faulty GPU)

Bronko KuliczkaWell I know this Problem very well I had it with my 6850 aswell. Though mabye a bit surprising the solution is rather easy. 1)Sell the Card for 120 Bucks as working without giving a guarantee. 2)Buy yourself a pack of smokes and a bottle of Whiskey. 3)Chillout Works every time! Hope this he...

@JourneymanGeek ...uh?

Heya @Ramhound
@Bob: I had a ping that insta-vanished

Bob
...I'mconfused

never mind ;p

12:58 PM
People are offended by bold font?

@Ramhound: well, you did come across as being a bit harsh :/
and we get a ton of complaints about your comments
Its not just the bold fonts, its also, to an extent, the tone

been actively trying to say things differently since we last talked, but I can't understand how bold font is offensive
Alright; point taken

nodnods
I'm not sure what precisely I can suggest to do things better

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, the only ping in this room since you last posted is just above your message :P

I use bold only to make things stand out, and while I might think at times people are "farting around" and while I might after 3 times of asking for information to answer the question ( case in point the guy asking about those 6 empty drives ) I have only a handful of times in the past ( not since the 1st ) actually said something to that effect. So it's frustrating that people feel that way because most often the case it's not the case (99.98%)

1:15 PM
Was checking @Ramhound's profile, was surprised he got suspended :/
I thought this could be worked out with at most a mod warning
The suspension came to me as "WTF?"

Can somebody please provide this guy a correct answer?

Q: where to get a fully updated iso for windows 8.1 pro

dmsheraziI have Key for windows 8.1 pro, I want an updated ISO so that when I need to install from scratch It wont take days to install all those updates every time. Where can I get an ISO that is up to date with all updates for windows 8.1 pro

2 people saying its not possible is frustrating :4

I think there's a canonical question on this and it probably needs to be updated

If I knew which comment I made that somebody raised their eyevbrow it wsould be easier to accept.
I have been actively saying things in a different way the last couole days,

Canonical question is for Windows 7, not Windows 8.1

Hm. Is it possible?

1:25 PM
Yes?
Google ->"Windows 8.1 .iso"

Does that include updates?

It includes Update 1, but no new .iso has been released even on MSDN

Precisely

But he wants a installation disk
Oh I see

Closest thing to that would be slipstreaming or an offline update pack

1:28 PM
He would have to streamline the updates himself thenb
but that's always been the case, so there is a solution, the ocmments give the wrong idea

Bob
@DragonLord O_O
@JourneymanGeek That's interesting. CDM has run on everything I've thrown at it.

@Bob Perhaps try Anvil's Storage Utilities?
That's what I've been using as my standard storage benchmark.

Bob
@DragonLord That would be advice for @JourneymanGeek.
I'm currently happy with CDM.
It's also nice and light.
Not that Anvil necessarily isn't.

1:47 PM
Lol. I'll give it a shot. I'm getting about 7 Mbps on my network benchmark (which works on local drives)
Granted a vhd on a samba share is hardly local

@Ramhound Get the esd and convert into an iso
check Mydigitallife forums
The esd is from the store download and it includes all the updates

2:50 PM
I like MS sources

Just did some research on the upcoming fifth-generation Core (Broadwell) processors for desktop and it looks like enthusiasts will finally get Iris Pro Graphics (with eDRAM) in a socketed part
Yes, you read that right—i7-5770K will have Iris Pro built in
I think AMD is scrambling to get to some good low-power parts on the market
They are horrendously short on cash and focusing on mobile to drive profits and bring things back under control

@DragonLord: and consoles

@JourneymanGeek Yes, the latest consoles are powered by AMD APUs and that should prevent AMD from going under, but they can't keep this up much longer
I think they'll make it through this dark period but will continue to lag behind Intel by half a generation

@DragonLord: If they're lucky

AMD will probably recapture the price/performance lead with the Zen chips in 2016
Definitely not performance per watt, though.
I feel like I want to invest in AMD, but it's behaving like a penny stock
Everyone is saying Sell
(Never invested in stocks before)
...but I digress.

3:19 PM
@DragonLord woohoo
@DragonLord I doubt they'll ever recapture any kind of lead in the CPU market, but at the same time, I want them to at least produce CPUs so that if Intel decides to rest on their laurels, they'll get overtaken within a few years by AMD... they need that threat of competition to motivate them
AMD is like the slow-burning fire in the mine tunnel that keeps their feet moving towards the exit :P

AMD still has a bit of an edge over Intel with iGPUs but this last advantage is disappearing fast
This does mean cheap $500 gaming desktops with decent graphics are possible, but if the Iris Pro 5770K rumor holds true (and it probably will), AMD may not have a chance to survive.
AMD is presently 1-1/2 generations behind Intel.
I am bloody scared that Intel's only desktop CPU competitor may die a horrible death

Bob
IIRC Intel themselves don't really want that.
Being legally considered a monopoly isn't good for them.
Though I'm not sure how ARM CPUs will affect that, and whether they fall under the same category.

3:34 PM
@Bob This is AMD's own doing.
Their last chance at survival right now is heterogeneous computing, which AMD saw coming and successfully capitalized upon
The desktop AMD APUs have always been great value for money.

Bob
@DragonLord It's been a common topic (speculation, of course) for years.
Hm. Can't find the relevant links right now.
Last saw it sometime ~2011 though.

$160 for a chip that can play BF4 on 1080p medium without a discrete GPU is really hard to beat. (It helps they have Mantle.)
This is AMD's last hope and they need to refresh their desktop APUs as soon as they can

Bob
@DragonLord If Intel really wanted to, they could more-or-less kill AMD in x86.

AMD needs something to hold down the fort as they work on their next-generation 16nm Zen architecture, and APUs are their last line of defense

Bob
On Intel's part, it's more a lack of desire than a lack of ability at this point.

3:47 PM
The A10-7850K has been a top seller for enthusiasts on a budget and they must stay competitive on this front

Bob
(e.g. they could match AMD pricing pretty easily)

Intel hasn't figured out how to make high-performance iGPUs price-competitive right now and this is why AMD still leads on this front
AMD has far more resources in GPUs at this point and they are playing this to their advantage.
However, Intel is almost there and AMD must stay competitive to avoid losing this last hope.

4:06 PM
I think AMD will pull it off
One last refresh of the Kaveri APUs should be enough
28nm should be mature by now and they can make these chips very cost-effectively
AMD will remain the value choice for one more year and start to bring profits up

Q: Please make the multiple comment timer less annoying (non-resetting etc.)

jdmAs a little feature to prevent comment spam, you can only enter one comment every 15 seconds. That's a very reasonable limitation, since you very rarely have a good reason to write comments that quickly. I've only seen it twice at all, I think, but both times it was extremely annoying. Only 1...

oh boy
Why am I doing this?
I have to think about this: First and foremost, have there been actual abuse scenarios that were been stopped by the resetting timer?
If there is abuse, an autoflag to bring it up to moderator attention would address it.
An autoflag for more than 12 comments within 5 minutes should do the trick.
@Mokubai: can you throw out the "I absolutely cannot agree..." and "Yes, it interferes..." messages?

5:09 PM
@DragonLord You want me to delete comments on meta.SE? Not got the power there I'm afraid.
They've got their own mods

Not on Meta, but here in chat

2 messages moved to Trashcan

Thanks. Sorry for the inconvenience.

No worries, was just confused for a moment :)

I think the solution to this problem is an autoflag for potentially abusive commenting, not a resetting timer. Keep the rate limit at 15 seconds, and have Community ♦ raise a flag if a user posts more than, say, 12 comments in 5 minutes. — DragonLord the Fiery 1 min ago

A: Please make the multiple comment timer less annoying (non-resetting etc.)

DragonLord the FieryReplace the timer reset with an automatic flag for too many comments in too short a period of time. The resetting timer is an annoyance. Yes, Jeff is right when he said that we must design for abuse, but there is a better solution. Instead of resetting the timer on a violation, have Community ♦...

Jeff is too concerned about moderator workload and thinks that automated solutions are best
Truth is, there is no substitute for human intervention. I've argued this time and time again.
Now that Jeff no longer works at Stack Exchange, the team is free to move in that direction.

5:34 PM
AMD has a rare chance to get out of x86 space of they want to they can just do Arm/GPU and make a ton of money

6:00 PM
@Ramhound I don't think this is a good idea.
They are already working on new x86 products as well as products that leverage the company's Heterogeneous System Architecture.
HSA is the heart of AMD's business these days. Abandoning x86 would mean abandoning HSA.
HSA is key to the PS4 and XB1. The PS4, in particular, uses 8 GB of GDDR5 shared between the CPU and GPU. I don't see how they can do this without HSA.
AMD made precisely the right move when they acquired ATI.

pcengines.ch/apu1d4.htm <-- most consumers only need that much processing power. That machine unfortunately doesn't have a video output, otherwise, it would be perfect for many.

There is very little reason to believe that AMD would exist in its present form absent this acquisition.
The PS4 and XB1 would not exist in their current form and would not be as cost-effective without AMD APUs and their HSA technology.

Blending CPU and GPU into a single processor makes some good sense if properly supported with memory, cache, and other.
The purpose of a CPU and GPU can be dramatically different, since a CPU is like a bull charging at the solution, maybe 2-4 bulls charging at slightly different targets with a 2-4 core processor, and a GPU is more like a swarm of bees doing lots of little things rapidly, possibly in parallel even.

I was just think about this: The Xbox 360 Controller is the industry standard gamepad these days.
How will the new Xbox One Controller fare in this light?
To what extent is it compatible with PC games that are designed for the Xbox 360 Controller?
This is the sort of challenge one runs into when a product becomes deeply entrenched in the market and a successor is released.

10:26 PM
@DragonLord Playstation 1/2 controllers always seemed so "reasonable" physically when compared against the bloated and ugly Xbox controllers. Has MS done anything to try to reign in the bloated-ness of its controllers? From a HW/SW side, I'm sure there's little difference other than interface.
Trying to use an Xbox controller literally hacked to have a USB interface did not once appeal to me. Figuring out how to use a Playstation2 controller with a computer on the other hand was something I had an interest in, but I never followed up on.

There's a PS2-like USB controller from logitech
I'll see if I can dig up a link

Even the super-minimal NES controller, made bluetooth such that Android/other can use it beats the pants off of Xbox bloated/ugly controllers.

And I agree 100% about Xbox controllers being too bulky. I always preferred the PlayStation style. Maybe because I've only had PlayStations

@Kristian I think I may actually have one of those. The Sony people didn't drop the ball when making their controllers. The MS people totally did.
If I wanted to use a laptop to control a game, I would have found games that need a laptop to control. Don't give me a pizza-pie-sized controller and expect me to not-react to it.

I even have a PS3 in this very room. But I pretty much only use it for media sharing and playing CDs/DVDs

10:41 PM
@Kristian I won't get started on how I feel about Playstation 3 and xbox greater than original as clients or servers. One NAS channel I support has gotten more than enough earfulls of what I think about game consoles for anything but games.
UPnP in particular gets some nuclear-grade hate.
If some person was situated to simultaneously open magma boreholes under each and every person that developed, designed, and marketed UPnP, and I was offered the option to say, "don't do it", and it wouldn't happen, I'm not sure that I could summon enough energy to save those people from flaming death. But, I'm passive-aggressive like that. Each and every one has done (moderately) irreparable damage to humanity.

@killermist I wouldn't even have the thing if not for the fact that I pulled it out of the trash, repaired it (by replacing a defective DVD drive) and then traded with a friend of mine for a controller.
I do agree. It's not doing a very good job of serving as a DLNA client. The throughput of the WiFi card is horrible, even though it's something like ~2m from my WiFi router

For games, it's probably great. Sony makes great game consoles.
As a media player, game consoles suck. Period.
I use real, capable, wired media players that can do SMB for playing media.

well, in my case it's having a PS3 or having nothing. So I chose having the PS3
SMB ?

SMB. That protocol that MS OSes speak natively and other systems emulate pretty well.

In computer networking, Server Message Block (SMB), one version of which was also known as Common Internet File System (CIFS, /ˈsɪfs/), operates as an application-layer network protocol mainly used for providing shared access to files, printers, serial ports, and miscellaneous communications between nodes on a network. It also provides an authenticated inter-process communication mechanism. Most usage of SMB involves computers running Microsoft Windows, where it was known as "Microsoft Windows Network" before the subsequent introduction of Active Directory. Corresponding Windows services are LAN...

10:57 PM
My NASes use SMB as the primary vector for passing media to media players.
Devices that don't speak SMB ... are not humored.
UPnP is flawed on its face. Worse, some instances of UPnP demand that the server waste CPU time transcoding things such that the target device is humored.
Better to take a hardline stance against UPnP in total.
Feature creep is ... creepy.
Encode once, problem solved. Easy.

That's one of my main issues with the PS3 for serving media. Most thinks dont play natively on it, so I'm forced into transcoding, which makes the PS3's WiFi very stressed

There's a number of competent media players that can be easily humored.
I use mostly Seagate GoFlexTV players.
There are some few caveats. Going from one .mp4 file to another may cause audio to "cut out", requiring a stop and restart. Meh. Some .mkv files pay audio but don't show video, and all that is necessary is to use mkvmerge to rewrap the file to fix the damaged wrapper. Annoying, maybe, but not a problem.
On-the-fly transcoding? Not a chance. WILL NOT EVER occur on my NAS.
Incompetence, especially on a protocol level, is something I do not humor.

11:18 PM
Dont have a NAS :) I use my desktop PC to serve the media when required. But it doesn't get much use, honestly
I might get an AirTame at some point, however

The AirTame looks similar to chromecast and FirePlug devices. What (if anything) makes it better?

Morning!

Fireplug looks to beat the pants off Chromecast in that it is far easier to tweak it.

AirTame is better in the sense that Chromecast only works with Chrome Tabs.
I havent heard about FirePlug before now

If I needed a media center box, I'd probably end up using an x86 nuc class box ;p

11:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek Morning JGeek.
bit funny to me, as it's 12:25 AM here :)

(tho, the odroid equivilent of the raspi looks shiny)
half past 7 here ;p

isn't it sunday where you are ?

If I didn't have my Seagate GoFlexTV units, I would likely have built XBMC machines to do playback.
Fortunately, I wasn't forced to do that.

When UPnP becomes mandatory, I'll start jettisoning hardware because I'll be damned if I use that turd.

11:28 PM
(course I have nothing displaywise that does HDMI...)

So, that begs the question. WHAT are you doing awake at half past 7 on a sunday. I hope you have small children, or there's no excuse :P

I have am dog ;p

My three Seagate GoFlexTV units can do HDMI. One is only using component output, but that's beside the point.

I have a TV with HDMI! But only device I have with HDMI output is a desktop PC in the other room

and well, 7.30 is usual pre work walky times.

11:30 PM
my laptop only has DP
I should prolly get a DP->HDMI converter

@Kristian: Lets see, older plasma TV has VGA. TV has composite for HD. Monitors are all dvi other than my little 10 incher, and the monitor on the shared box
planning on getting a newer dell P series once the 4K model is out

I got myself a U2414H not long ago
I love it!
actually the box is still here :S

Yeah, just started on a new job so I can actually afford stuff that's nice now ;p

neat, when did you start ?

(Also, interesting work benefit. I can buy movie crew swag ;p)

11:37 PM
"Newly minted tech support wauzer at a leading VFX company" I stalked you in your profile. Sorry.

no worries ;p
(I work for double negative singapore)

I have some old movie swag. Mostly I have some old movie mylars that were displayed in the box office.

now, I am tempted to ask: what's a wauzer ?

@Kristian: snauzer westie cross.
<--- is one ;p
We think

so it's a dog!
<-- afraid of dogs.

11:40 PM
I don't bite

I like friendly critters. We have two friendly critters. They're cats,

In short, they will kill you in your sleep

I actually like dogs, it's my avatar that doesn't.

and ignore you. And want to buy a boat.

I dont want to buy a boat!

11:43 PM
Ahh, but you do not deny the other things ;p

I'd settle for a less banged up bike. or car!
I will kill you in your sleep, yes.
as in: kill -9 10165

-bash: kill: journemangeek: arguments must be process or job IDs
;p
You'd want to use pkill there ;p

yea yea. I fixed it!
had to dig out your profile ID first :p

-bash: kill: (17559) - Operation not permitted

sudo kill -9 10165 !

11:46 PM
