I got gouged pretty bad by student debt as well... CAD $16,000 for a 1 year technical degree in recording and production.

@rolfl is there a SEDE query for # of questions/day? i feel like it's dropped a lot the past month or so, but could well be imagining it

hmmm.... I got parents, and a small scholarship.... I ended debt-free. that was a long time ago, though
data is 3 days old

Of course my naive dumb ass from back then thought I would get so much better education through a private college. That was a lie. And also believed them when they said most of their students managed to get work in the industry. That was also a lie.

@rolfl thanks :)
guess i'm not imagining things. pretty big drop since mid-october

@mjolka Yes, but that's mostly voting, not actual questions

12:14 AM
@rolfl am i misreading it? questions asked in week -- mid-october: 1,959, late nov/early dec 817
oh... i think i got the colours wrong

Go to the 'results' tab instead of the graph

thanks, that's much clearer

The 'last week' on all charts is always overstated.
Posts that are closed with no score, no answers, get deleted after 9 days, and then they do not show up in SEDE.
I should probably just exclude closed questions.... hmmm.
Marked-deleted in real sites, but deleted stuff is not archived to SEDE.
Deleted questions are hard-to-find unless you are a mod.
Even then they are not easy

Oh ok

At least mods can search for deleted content. Other users, with enough rep, can see recently deleted questions here: codereview.stackexchange.com/…

12:21 AM
@rolfl That sounds like it would be a good idea, or at least make is a separate metric with its own line

BTW, I looked at your SQL question and can't find anything, other than your naming aliases. So I may write an answer singing your code's praises ;-)

Why, thanks ;-)
I'll be sure to +1 that ;-)

I aspire to write SQL like that ;-)

Thanks, didn't know about "Software Recommendations SE". I'm not actually asking "how to find", I'm asking "how to choose/pick" rather. — Adrien Be 21 mins ago
Software package selection, basically.

Hey there @Adrien ... unusual name.... I'm about to close your question... can talk about it if you want.

The idea: You have your usual project.
Project Outline, Requirements,... and then the bright idea to use existing software.
You should have already prioritized your requirements.
If you have not done so, do that first.
After having prioritized your requirements, see for each package:
- What requirements they fulfill
- Cost
- Possible risks (like bugs) and countermeasures (like support; is there a forum? A phonenumber you can call?)
say you have 40 packages that could satisfy your requirements (The result of a github search on "javascript library mobile design" or something)
Start by filtering them based on your most important requirements.
like uh, I dunno, "Does it support android 2.3-like devices in terms of performance"
in your case:
License.
"Does it have a license that allows me to use it commercially?"
the ones that don't, move them to a separate pile
those are likely useless, but you want to know you looked at them anyway
to prevent going in circles
Repeat these quick-sort steps until you have a small list of packages/libraries (less than 10)
@AdrienBe any questions/remarks so far?
a general "I'm still reading" answer is good too, lets me know I'm not talking to a void

welp, back to work then, I guess

Emz
Hello @rolfl

So you want me to construct the loop for 1 tick and 4 renders per execution and yield the remaining time to other processes? — Emz 3 mins ago
I think there may be something in the math you are missing (at least I hope it is you, and not me... ;-)

Emz
Hm?

1:47 PM
What you are aiming for at the moment, is something that will render on every loop, and it will tick 50-times per second, and have a 1-second notify too,

0
Q: Text on chat buttons is gone

PimgdThe text from my chat buttons is gone. What happened? Can I fix it somehow? Refreshing doesn't seem to help.

my best-worded bug ever

Emz
Yes, you pointed out that I should yield my time after 200 frames have been rendered.

No, that's not what the code does... it does not yiield after 200 frames, it yields a little bit every frame so that you get 200 frames per second max.

Emz
Which is what I meant with my previous comment.

OK, yes, now I can read it right, yes, have at most 4 renders for each tick.
Note the 'at most' part.

Emz
1:50 PM
Yes. If the game can't keep up it should skip renders and still perform the ticks.

Well, that's not going to happen with either my code, or your code.
if it takes longer than 1/50 of a second to render, then you will start losing ticks.

Emz
I thought so.
I don't just want to copy-paste your code and make it work for my game. I want to understand it and implement.

welp after updating chrome it's fixed
I wonder why it did that

Actually, your code will catch up on ticks..... mine will discard ticks.
My code:
         if (now - nextTick >= 0) {

            update();

            // catch up with as many ticks as needed (skip them if necessary).
            do {
                nextTick += NANOS_PER_TICK;
            } while (now - nextTick >= 0);

        }

Emz
What one want optimally is to not hog the cpu and still play catch-up with the ticks? Sacrificing rendering right?

1:53 PM
If you want to sacrifice rendering instead of ticks, then it's a different problem....

@Emz depends...
in Online games you somewhen have to discard ticks...

Emz
For this game, rendering should not be any problem at all as nothing really changes when the user doesn't do anything. There are very few background animations and such. The user presses buttons and things happen thereafter.
@Vogel612 sure, to make sure that a user is synchronized with the server.

@Emz exactly. but as that's not given here...

Emz
No it is only single-player. So my statement still stands right?

That's a big 'if'. just because nothing much changes does not mean the render is fast.
What you really need to do is try it... I guess.

Emz
1:57 PM
This game would probably do with 1 frame / second. But I thought I'd try to build it a bit more general for learning purposes.

nearly a 100 lines and 10 levels of nesting (12 if you include the function and the class) to do two async requests serially. wtf.

Let's see how your code could break, @Emz .....

@Pimgd could some guard clauses maybe help?

    @Override
    public FutureTask<Boolean> doNudgeMoveLeft(final CameraRequestListener<Boolean> listener)
    {
        final StartStopMovementComponent component = this;
        final FutureTask<Boolean> future = new FutureTask<>(new Callable<Boolean>()
        {

            @Override
            public Boolean call() throws Exception
            {
                final Boolean[] bool = new Boolean[1];
                while (true)
                {
                    try
                    {

If you have a slow-running tick operation that takes longer than 1/50 second, you are screwed.,

Emz
1:58 PM
My code right now isn't very good at all. It has some more holes in it I found.

@Pimgd this looks like a no then :(

it looks like my design exploded somewhere
and yet I don't see where

yesterday, by rolfl
So, what you should do, is implement both API's one a nudge one, the other a start/stop one. Implement each API, and be done with it.
There? ^^^

actually I implemented that nicely
the nudge one
somehow, start stop is harder
I don't get it
all it has to do is fire A then B

@Pimgd why not nudge until stop is called?

2:00 PM
why do I need 100 lines
@Vogel612 that's the start-stop implementation of nudge-movement-cameras

@Pimgd because calling runnables in java < 8 is a PITA?

errr

@Emz If your tick code is assinine, then it needs to discard slow-running ticks otherwise that tick-catchup-loop will become so large that it will seldom escape to do the render/second loop.

Now I need to implement the nudge implementation for start-stop-movement-cameras
which is start, wait till we get a response, stop.

Emz
Yeah, for example that part. I will now try to write it something like this.

do a tick
catch up on ticks as long as <= 1 second occured
render to a max of 4 times
yield remaining time and repeat

2:01 PM
Even if you discard every render, you may still spend your time in catchup.

Emz
I should probably as well force 1 rendering per second.

@Vogel612 I think this is basically it
Runnable and Callable are total ASS in Java 6

Emz
If the user is stuck at 75% ticks they will else never get a new screen.
So something like
render ()
tick ()

while ( < oneSecondPassed && ticks remining) {
tick ()
}

if (there is time)
render to a max of x times

yield remaining time and repeat

Let me write it somewhat differently... hang on... this will be the .

@Pimgd hey sorry for the slow reply, was in a meeting. I mean no disrespect but although you have some interesting point in your answer, quite a few sound a bit strange (i.e. A phonenumber you can call for support, does it support android 2.3-like devices in terms of performance). Probably because you do not come from the "front end world". Also, regarding the license,
"Does it have a license that allows me to use it commercially?", that's why I put "MIT license" (as in free for commercial usage, in one of my expectations in the question. I probably should insist in my question that I want

@AdrienBe phonenumbers for support are actually a cool thing

A: General Game Loop 2.0

rolflYour code is pleasant to read, and easy enough to follow. That's a great start. There are a number of issues, mostly on the mild side, but I am concerned about the timing in the game loop. Good morning

s/morning/monking/

2:19 PM
@Emz - note that for all math using nanoTime you cannot simply do a compare between two times... you know that, right?
For example, I do things like:
now - nextTick >= 0
instead of:
nextTick >= now
The difference is very important.

Emz
Enlighten me.

nanotime is a continuous loop with no start or end point.
you have no idea what the value will be, and it can 'wrap around' from Long.MAX_VALUE to Long.MIN_VALUE.
You cannot assume that some time after nanotimeX is going to be a value that is larger than nanotimeX.

Emz
I don't see how your way of doing it protects from it.

So, since the nanotime can overflow from big, to small, what you do is calculate the difference, which (if there was an overflow), will underflow......

Emz
One could get an overflow while the other one don't?
If they both get an overflow it is fine either way?

2:23 PM
No, the time overflows, and the sibtraction underflows.....
So, yes, the two errors cancel each other out.
It explains the problem (badly) ^^^

Emz
If now and/or nextTick overflows it doesn't matter it the subtraction would underflow, as it won't? if now overflows and is suddently 5 while nextTick is very close to Long.MAX_VALUE. 5 - a very big number < 0. For both cases.

It does not overflow to 5, it overflows to -9xxxxxxxxxx.... and the difference: -9xxxxxxx.. - +9xxxxx..... is to big to store in a long.... and it underflows again to just a small number of nanos.

Emz
Oh right, working with unsigned, forgot.

Right, I have to go.

Emz
Oh right! Now I see how it is working.
A bit slow sorry.
Thanks.
I will study your new code more in depth and get back with a comment and/or an accepted answer!

@rolfl I am sure it would make me feel better about my knowledge one way or another....lol

What's the purpose/intent of the <kbd></kbd> tags? It looks like a [tag:foo] but not quite.

<kbd>F5</kbd> and clear your cookies

@xDaevax not parsed here...

at least that's what I tell a lot of users
;)

@Vogel612 out of curiosity: appart from the horrible javascript/xhtml experience, what's your impression on the framework? stability, maturity, community, browser-support, performance, modularity/extensibility ?

3:23 PM
@AdrienBe quite stable, small community, but engaged developers. (lots of SO questions got answers from their dev-team). Cross-Browser support is fine for current stuff (not good with old IE, and no idea about safari, but eh).
it seems to be quite mature, but the documentation could use a little improvement. It takes quite some time to read up on it, but that could also be because I was a n00b at the time...

@Vogel612 interesting, what about performance & modularity/extensibility ?

no idea.. I didn't get to the point in development where that would become relevant.

@Vogel612 ja, well, poor documentation (lack of examples/explanations) is a common pb

examples are there..
just if you want to do something slightly different from the examples it feels unintuitive coming from the backend..
might be different for JS devs, though.

alright
yeah, maybe...

@Malachi LOL

@Vogel612 or maybe this product is a pain in the ass even for experienced JS devs
:D

@AdrienBe YMMV ;)

In my experience, libraries with small communities, even the one that are fun, do come with a lot of limitations, for obvious reasons
And I mostly have bad experience with commercial stuff

@AdrienBe community as in follower community.. extjs is commercial

yup
developers as in users

Math Answer, CHECK! Code Review Answer, CHECK!

@AdrienBe developers as in maintainers
@Malachi now for the hard part, eh?

now for SO..... Creepy Eyebrow raise

Commercially supported products/frameworks usually praise the community but have, again in my experience, far below community engagement & often super-crappy company-owned-and-locked forums

@rolfl thanks i have now

Thanks, and appreciated.

3:37 PM
@Malachi good luck with that ^^

@ferada you can edit your previous messages by using the keyboard's arrow up ;)

I just realized I haven't had any coffee yet....

@Malachi - see if you can out-do @Phrancis here: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/72246/31503

@Vogel612 ah, thanks again

thought we had mathjax turned on?
@rolfl challenge accepted

3:47 PM
@rolfl I had accidentally submitted with just half a sentence (must have hit a wrong key by accident) but I edited in more stuff ;-)

I'm off. Bye everyone

@AdrienBe Goodbye!

3:59 PM
@Phrancis Good, because i was not sure what to do with it, whether to upvote it, or delete it ;-)
Being a mod can be complicated sometimes ;-) Answer is much better now...
Hmmm... I found a bug.... drat.
I'll wait a few hours.... but, there's a challenge for anyone interested ;-)

In your query?

Yeah, it's under-reporting candidate edits.

well I have some things to do at work that are kind of important, so I will try to stay away long enough to get them done..... lol

Q: Indexes vs. Indices as a function name/property (also, aliasing methods)

DroogansHere's is an open pull request featuring an object property called indexes (which is how I typically describe the pluralized form of index in everyday speech). https://github.com/rackerlabs/encore-ui/pull/673#discussion-diff-21605807 While developing this feature, I remembered that it's also sp...

Q: Using std::array to implement variadic construction of class with list-of-self as subclass

HostileForkI have a situation with a base class for whom a container of itself is a subclass. So a Block of Item has various ways in which it acts like an Item itself. I want to be able to initialize Block as Block {foo, baz, bar...} in a variadic syntax. Here are the twists: When a Block is constructe...

Q: Printing all even and odd numbers with threads

Hui ZhaoThe original question is on careercup. Write a multi threaded C code with one thread printing all even numbers and the other all odd numbers. Q: File System Read Buffer Efficiency

xDaevaxContext I'm working on a new Enterprise Library at my company and I am implementing some code that will be used to read files into memory.
